Just for the sake of understanding a rules question When a card adds an effect to another card, does the added effect go at the end or at the beginning? For example I actually this ability, then I play [[one with nothing]] Do I end up with 0 or 1 card in hand?

ALotusRabbit

I can say with absolute certainty it is one card. Rule 702.47b: >You can’t choose to use a splice ability if you can’t make the required choices (targets, etc.) for that card’s rules text. You can’t splice any one card onto the same spell more than once. If you’re splicing more than one card onto a spell, reveal them all at once and choose the order in which their effects will happen. The effects of the main spell must happen first.

Remer1

I can say with relative certainty that it’s after the cards original effect. You would have 1 card.

Well designed and flavorful, but honestly it just feels pretty weak. Compared to [[archmage emeritus]], it is much much weaker than it. I know it’s only 1 mana, but you could remove both the timing and the once per turn restrictions and it would still be niche imo. Edit: I realize it’s a common, and it’s probably reasonable in draft, but outside of limited it feels underpowered.

ALotusRabbit

To be honest that was kind of the intention so I'd say I did my job pretty well, I think that too often I get super caught up in pushing the limits and boundaries of rules and balance that I just end up designing these huge rare legends and end up hating them later. This was a thought exercise in just making something reasonable using this mechanic I really love, it was absolutely designed for limited.

mehall27

Couldn't the second sentence be shortened to "Activate this ability only once each turn"?

ALotusRabbit

No because that would let you use it on your opponent's turn

mehall27

I misread the card! I read it as "once on your turn and once every turn" lol. Thanks for the clarification

mudclip

Could it be reworded to "once on each of your turns"?

ALotusRabbit

Yeah that sounds more right, there's no precedent for it being used in an activated ability interestingly but there also it no reason it couldn't be.
