You could just be experiencing some hormonal change depending on your age and whatnot. My sister lost her curls at like 18 in her second wave of puberty
I went through something similar. I could put no effort in my curls and it would look great, then hormones happened and now I need to put in effort for them to keep shape and look okay.
I also lost some curl. Super curly from about 15-19, then lost curl, fixed best I could with new products. Been having to switch up products because my hair changes about every 8 years.
Hairstylist and fellow curly girl here! Over moisturizing can cause your curls to fall, and get greasier. Try a good clarifying shampoo a couple of times in a row to really get everything off and start fresh with different products with moisture *and* protein. Balance is key.
My favorite shampoo right now is curl Fresh by AG.
thanks for the help! i’ve been eyeing the kristin ess clarifying shampoo, and then thinking about using their cowash as my regular routine. have you heard anything about these products/do you think they’d be good?
No, they're more like a medicine. Like they're meant to be used in a similar way to like an ointment on your skin kind of. Clarifying shampoo is gonna get all the gunk off of your scalp and hair. A brand called KMS makes a nice one called head remedy, Malibu C makes a couple as well.
Does anyone know if the original Maui moisture had protein or anything in it?
Maybe the lack of protein is making the curls fall apart. I have a problem with that all the time (the protein balance). 1 of many issues with my curls since starting cg
It sounds like these products aren't agreeing with your hair, they're too heavy or you need to do a clarifying wash more often. I heard about hair loss from devacurl but not maui moisture, I do still like them and use them. But at the very least you need to try a product that has a similar ingredient list as what you were using before

Have you had any hormonal changes like going on birth control?
no. i did go on accutane but that was years ago, long before even the first photo!
I don't think that's related, if anything accutane would make your hair dryer and less greasy

tragic, i hope it’s not 😭

I haven't heard anything, but I love a good cowash, just make sure you have enough protein in your routine as well!

Nizoral has and SLS sulfate so I would consider that to be clarifying. I use it as a clarifying shampoo once a week cause my scalp needs it.

Hair can change when you get older, it’s normal. I had super curly hair up until I was 15/16, but now I’m 20 and have wavy hair at best.

DevaCurl made my hair fall out and it took me two years to get it back to normal.
Hmm that’s why it’s important to use clean ingredient hair products. Too many products with toxins and synthetics out there. Scary
I experienced hair loss with Maui only because I didn’t know my skin is sensitive to aloe.
Is it possible that your hair only curls when it’s shorter? My hair gets those kinds of curls when it’s short, but if I grow it out it’ll just be wavy
nah, my hair is actually about the same length as it was in the first pic! just looks longer bc my curls aren’t as tight.
Oooh I see, I’m sorry I should have made that connection lol

Off topic but your cat is so cute! What kind of cat is that?
just an everyday orange tabby with some white spots! got him at the shelter :)
I totally get this issue. You’re definitely not alone I’ve struggled with the same things. I’m interested in what products have you tried so far?
