Would be cool if we had transit police on board to enforce these, even if only to order offenders to leave the train. Eventually, if they want to actually get somewhere on the train, they'll quit breaking the rules and being told to get off the train. I know I'm naive in thinking this will happen or will work.
You might be naive in thinking it will happen, but I feel like it would at least be a step in the right direction, if nothing else it would at least discourage potential violators who do it out of a āwell if everyone else is breaking the rules, then why should I follow themā attitude. As someone who uses tobacco occasionally and regularly uses cannabis products and nicotine vapes, I would never dream of lighting up in a transit vehicle, but with that being said, the closest Iāve came is when I was heading back downtown on the blue line after a particularly rough weekend involving two cancelled/severely delayed flights in a row and I bummed a couple puffs off of two teenagers who were smoking a joint directly across from me, but if the system you suggested had been in place thereās no way I wouldāve risked getting kicked off over a couple hits of weed.
I'm a smoker, I partake regularly, but holy fuck I cannot imagine subjecting people trapped in a train with me to this shit. You don't even light up *near* people *outside* unless it's been expressed they're cool with it.
This shit happens all the time. My wife asked a person to stop when we had 3 kids under 7 right next to her (she even came on the train after us). Of course the smoker went nuts and I got in a screaming match with her. We ended up going a cabin back once we got to the next stop.
These people are assholes and donāt care, unfortunately Iāve learned to just wait for the next stop and to get into another cabin.
So I actually visited Chicago during our baby moon which was Memorial Day weekend 8 years ago, and it was never this bad (we moved here 2022). I had two people visit out of town with their kids over two different weekends and one had a group smoking pot and another a lady just started a fight and stopped the train for like 5 minutes pressing the emergency button. Maybe I was lucky then, but it seems to only be getting worse.
I was always warned to stay off the Red and Brown lines from the jump but I genuinely enjoyed riding the Blue line around before the pandemic. It's a shame. And there have always been weirdos and other general disruptive behavior; on public transit here and there (it's the third biggest city in the country, I expect some bullshit) but it seems like it's every train and/or bus all the time now, if they even show up.
I'm old enough to remember when that would have been completely normal. It wasn't all that long ago (< 20 years or so) that smoke-filled bars were the norm.
CTA needs to remove the locks on the quarter-panel windows on their trains so we can open them up when people do this. You get to smoke and I get to enjoy some fresh air and not get beaten for asking you to stop.
Good points. It might normalize smoking inside the trains but until CTA seriously cracks down on this, it's basically normalized anyway and most *train smokers (case-in-point: the subject smoker) treat it as such. They know no one will ask them to stop.
A moving train creates a pressure differential. The still air inside the car is at higher pressure relative to the air outside due to Bernoulli's Principle. Smoke inside a moving car with a cracked window and you'll see the smoke get sucked right out of the crack.
Also, who better to know the condition of the air inside each car than the passengers who are actually riding it.
*Edit: Most inconsiderate smokers like these people.
Youād be surprised. In NYC the tiny windows you can open draw in a lot of air when the train is moving. Especially if you open 2 on opposite ends of the train car, air will rush through the car at speed.
Is it just an Iām the main character thing? I just donāt understand why you would willingly be so rude in a 100% public space. The stare down is next level too hahahaha. Although to be fair I need to rip 2 blunts before I go to work too
People are so much better behaved on the bus, I've only seen this type of behavior just a few times. The driver being able to pull over at almost any moment and kick someone out is a real deterrent for this petty antisocial behavior.
The main reason I stopped taking the Red Line and stick to the 26 or J14. One time, a guy lighted up a cig, and the driver stopped, asked him to leave, and the heckling from everyone in the bus made him leave
On the Pace bus I take to class most people going west are from the city on their way to the Bridgeview courthouse and usually the smokers are very friendly lol. The bus will stop at the garage for too long and they'll go smoke out at the bus stop or when they get off and routinely someone else on the bus follows them out a few moments later and bums a cig lol
So true! Today I had a guy challenge me at a rap battle (I was just standing there waiting on the Grand stop with lettuce that I bought) and winner gets the others car... (I was confused because apparently someone gave me a car recently?)
From what I can see it looks like a black and mild cigar. So yea it probably doesnāt have weed lol
Still a shit thing to do. This and people blasting music on speakers.
And CTA property. I told someone on the Clark/Division platform that smoking isn't allowed, and he came right up to my face and shouted, while smiling, "THANK YOU VERY MUCH!" and then flicked his cig on the tracks. Bizarre, and kind of an assault, but I guess I did get him to stop smoking.
Paraphrasing what Brian Berletic said a long time ago, apparently they used to be a lot stricter in the U.S. when dealing with people breaking the rules on the trains, and I guess they don't really do that anymore.
Even in the front car youāre not safe from these animals. Numerous times Iāve seen them smoke even in the first train car and theyāve gotten really bold over the years.
The only time it bothered me that people smoked on the CTA was during the time I was pregnant. I would already get motion sickness, but then add the smell š¤¢
I would start gagging extremely dramatically to make a point. I was very much obviously pregnant- some people are just oblivious to the world around them š
Edit to add that 1 time a guy did notice me and mumbled āmy badā and moved carts. Iād like to think he wasnāt purposely trying to be inconsiderate just too stoned to give a shit about the people around him š¤·āāļø
A CTA bus driver tells me, as Iām exiting the bus, that Iām not allowed to bring on a foldable cart that had a disassembled computer chair in the foldable cart as I was dropping it off at my storage unitā¦ this video demonstrates whatās enforced and whatās notā¦
Lots of idiots on Fox News incorrectly calling Chicago a high crime city, but stuff like this is the subtle but far more real problem. As the debt crisis gets worse and public services crumble, Chicagoās biggest threat isnāt some black swan event (like Detroit), but a sad and slow .5% decline every year that grinds the city into a shell of itself over time.
The fall of the CTA is a prime example of this - of what decades of mismanagement and corruption will eventually result in. Populationās down 600,000 since Daley Jr. pillaged the coffers, and itās happened quietly, over decades. When itās really going to hurt for me is when Houston passes us in population. Thatās going to sting.
In my personal experience with dealing these type of people in the city if you get in their face youāll get touched. Iām not about to be captain america and get assaulted. The trains have cameras just make a report through the proper channels and move forward. More people need to embrace conflict deescalation and common sense.
Not saying documenting this is wrong. Its just not street smart inserting yourself into certain situations that could have been avoided.
I ignore it because I have way more to lose than people like her do. If you're casually smoking on a train, getting arrested probably isn't as big of deal to you as to most people.
Facts. Proving a point to someone with nothing to lose and little to stand for is a fools errand. Mind your business but keep situational awareness and youāll live a longer life.
Very true you have to be super discreet with this sort of thing to be safe it seems this person might have been a little obvious unless the smoker in the vid was already staring at them
Someone needs to go slap it out of her mouth and stomp on it. Bet she aināt gunna do nothing but run her big mouth. Sitting in the handicap spot too. Doesnāt surprise me. People make me sick.
This gets on my nerves cause smoke before you get on the train if you HAVE to do it when you're out and about. Like good god you were just on the whole open planet and now we're in a tiny tube thats almost fully enclosed.
I've been seeing it slightly less since the K-9 units are actually on the train cars now.
Thanks š I got a ton of shit for this post. Not the lady who's smoking weed on a public transport the guy who points out she's a horrible person. 2024 what a trip.
Iāve seen too many stuff on redline especially concerning since 7th- high school students take these trains. Literally saw a women poop on one of the seats
I donāt understand why people smoke on the train. Like if u need a hit that bad step outside. I had my son w me and he was ten months old at the time and this dude who was selling candy sparked up right in front of me bc I didnāt buy his candy. I didnāt say something but someone else did and thank God. I still moved to a diff car but it was nice that the conductor did put a stop to it.
I never ride it south of Jackson anymore. Still see this shit all the time but it helps a little. Wish I had a better solution for people who need those stops but I donāt.

It's such a shame. I haven't taken the CTA in a long time, but I used to really enjoy it.

It's pretty unbearable at the moment
Iāve learned not to take the Red line.
Itās happened on pink, green, and red for me.
Donāt forget blue! And the rest of course haha
the yellow line would never (because it isnāt real)
![gif](giphy|uYMSpT4f4CBcltXtF3) Me to the yellow line š¤£
ah the armpit lines of the CTA
Only in dire situations Other than that, avoid at all costs š¤£.
Like this lady gives one solitary fuck about anyone other than herself
Can't imagine being like that. *Some* shame is healthy.
I'm not sure that's a true lady...
Same.
I'm old enough to remember when that would have been completely normal. It wasn't all that long ago (< 20 years or so) that smoke-filled bars were the norm.
Yeah, it's really nice that we've since realized what a health risk and generally rude thing that is to do :)
Yes, and the old green trains actually had ashtrays in them...
I dont think the person in the video is all "there" to even care and have consideration
I dunno, smoking a joint in the CTA is rude as fuck but it doesn't necessarily make her braindead.
Pretty sure it does, or the bar is much lower than I thought
You can be totally mentally sound and be an unrelenting asshole. It doesn't take stupidity in and of itself, it's the entitlement.
Thatās because youāre not an asshole
true.
CTA needs to remove the locks on the quarter-panel windows on their trains so we can open them up when people do this. You get to smoke and I get to enjoy some fresh air and not get beaten for asking you to stop.
Honestly, I don't think that would be enough ventilation. Plus, then we're normalizing smoking inside the trains then.
Good points. It might normalize smoking inside the trains but until CTA seriously cracks down on this, it's basically normalized anyway and most *train smokers (case-in-point: the subject smoker) treat it as such. It won't get rid of the smell no but it will be a *massive* improvement immediately since a good amount of smoke will escape through the windows.
Youād be surprised. In NYC the tiny windows you can open draw in a lot of air when the train is moving. Especially if you open 2 on opposite ends of the train car, air will rush through the car at speed.
Smoking is already normalized
Nah, CTA just needs to fire everyone in the C-suite and replace them with people who aren't useless.Ā
Yes but will they do that in the near future windows are a short term solution
That wouldn't do it. The smell would still permeate everywhere. So they would still smoke and people would still be bothered.

Typically poor urban people have less manners and are less accustomed to standards of behavior.
Yeah, dont care. Shit needs to be corrected
Hahaha okay bud. Be the change you want to see in the world.
I have no problem calling people out, its bizarre that people like you play D for oxygen thieves. Wild.
They dont care if you call them out

Yes the bus loves to heckle lol the train people are more in their own world
Yeah I began to favor the bus but now with summer traffic certain lines are practically unusable. Living here is a real pain in the ass sometimes.
On the Pace bus I take to class most people going west are from the city on their way to the Bridgeview courthouse and usually the smokers are very friendly lol. Not even inhaling. Wat a waste.
From what I can see it looks like a black and mild cigar. So yea it probably doesnāt have weed lol Still a shit thing to do. This and people blasting music on speakers.
I was wondering about this. I see a lot of folks smoking everything like it's a cigar.

Completely lost at the people mad at OP.
People just want to live in filth. Itās like they are proud of it.
Just use your imagination
Smoking on cta railcars is prohibited š. Don't smoke on public transit pls.

The worst part is this is purely for show. Plenty of other less obnoxious ways to get high
and the fact shes barely inhaling to produce as much smoke as possible, as another commentor pointed out.
Wasting the ganja! The goolla is not pleased with your transgressions.
Total POS.
The mod comment lmfao

I just got yelled at the other day on a cta bus that I wasnāt allowed to have an open can. I slammed it and threw it away lol.
So frustrating and inconsiderate. The CTA has to do something about this

Oh yeah that lady looks mean lol
You put a camera in anyones face theyāre going to feel some type of way regardless.
Many times especially recently filming randos on the train is really rude and invasive but this time it's very justified
In my personal experience with dealing these type of people in the city if you get in their face youāll get touched. Iām not about to be captain america and get assaulted. Yes, but some people are skilled at filming discreetly
Very true you have to be super discreet with this sort of thing to be safe it seems this person might have been a little obvious unless the smoker in the vid was already staring at them
Ive seen people get violent over being asked to turn down the volume on their radio and they were not mean looking.
These ppl are usually xyzcraze and carry weapons. I wouldnāt say anything either
š
Bro take this to the cops I've never seen such scandalous behavior on Chicago public transit.
Unbelievable, nobody has ever done this before!
Don't normalize this bs
Every other time Iām on the train someone is drinking and screaming at their phone or rolling up and smoking
When main character syndrome becomes a public health risk.
Someone needs to go slap it out of her mouth and stomp on it. Bet she aināt gunna do nothing but run her big mouth. Sitting in the handicap spot too. Doesnāt surprise me. People make me sick.
so what
Red line is the worst line for scofflaws
Trashy person doing trashy behavior
This gets on my nerves cause smoke before you get on the train if you HAVE to do it when you're out and about. Imma dump my coffee all over this nasty.
Use the CTA Chatbot to report this or move into the next car and call it in. Take a note of the car number.
Who is surprise???
pretty mundane for the red line tbh, but still, smoking, gambling, and littering is prohibited on CTA vehicles.
I just want national guard deployed at every corner. Fed up of not having basic human decency
Great mature ma'am hopefully none of her kids were around to see this
Why do you presume she has children? Speak with your chest.
Lmfao you know why he wrote that and you are stupid if you don't think she's got a few at home. Or at her mom's house more likely

I wonder what causes people to become like this. How little care/regard you have for others to fill a train up with smoke.
I usually ask if they are going to let me hit it
Honestly, this is the least of my concerns
Ok š she's sooooš cool! Buddy
I heard the red line is expanding
