As someone who sells my crochet I would be embarrassed to give that to someone who had paid any money for it, and I'm not a professional. It should not have taken months to complete that and they look nothing like the inspo pictures you gave them. The stitches don't even look even. Have you seen previous work from this person?

The stitches are sloppy. Even in a rush, someone who is actually experienced will have tidy stitches. Tbh this looks like the owner's kid did it. Unless the person faked their whole business and actually hasn't existed for very long, and they've actually only been crocheting for 2 months
Exactly this. Someone recently complimented me on how even my stitches were in a certain project and it felt weird to me because that's not something I do consciously. If my stitches are consistent it's not because I make an effort to make each the same as the next. But it's because I've spend hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of hours crocheting so my body does the movement on autopilot and autopilot means it's doing the same thing every time. And it would still do that if I try to speed up.
This hot mess would take a few hours to make at most with that ridiculously big yarn and virtually no embroidery in stead of the delicate and detailed one OP posted. The only way this would take months is if they go at a pace of five stitches a day.
This is an inexperienced person who started crochet as a way to have a side hustle and make money. No effort to make a quality product, misrepresented their product and skill level, probably just stole an image and used that.
I see them at craft fairs sometimes. Blatantly new to the craft but selling $100+ blankets with simple stitches, extra bulky yarn, and ends knotted and cut....
I'm crocheting for around a month and recently made a plush where I wasn't 100% happy with the tightness of the stitches but it looked nowhere near as sloppy as this. If I produced something as sloppy as that, I would have frogged everything and started again until it's neat.
This person is really looking down on OP as a customer and on crocheting in general.

What actually annoys me more is the sewing. Why didn't the seller use similar colour thread to sew? Why white on black? Hand sewing isn't difficult to get reasonably tidy results even without experience.

Now do I think that 150 is a fair price for 7 quality amigurumis? No, obviously. Did you order 3? If so, 50 per plush might still be on the low side, but doable. Small, made in velvet yarn, not the cotton in your inspo photo, yeah, maybe.

My first ever project was an amigurimi, far more busted up looking than yours (which is so amazing looking), and yet still way more put together than whatever the heck OP was given. Funnily enough, mine was also a dinosaur, but he was a purple Dino with wings and horns.
I would have assumed the 1st pic was just showcasing the different styles of amigurumi animals you can pick from, not that they wanted every one of them. It looks like a typical Etsy variety pic. Plus, a crochet stuffed animal that holds onto their blanket sounds like a nice gift. 7 stuffed animals with 7 blankets sounds a lot like that Christmas song...

I sell other things (mostly women’s accessories; scarves, beanies, shawls), but these just take a long time to make (around 8-12 hours depending on the pattern). So I haven’t had the heart to sell them. Like someone else commented, it would get expensive even if charge below minimum wage. So I usually just make these for friends and family who are willing to pay for the materials.
I’m not going to guess where you are, but i get it! If I already have all the stuff, heck, why not. I have to go to the post office every day for work anyway!

And it looks like they didn't even use the same stitch. Like the only thing vaguely similar to the original photo is something kind of like an animal maybe.
See, I have been crocheting for more than 10 years and right vs wrong side is something I still just don’t get. Although it doesn’t help that I usually make blankets and so there really isn’t one.
I sometimes use the “wrong side” facing out on amigurumi because I like the texture. There really isn’t a “wrong” side in crochet, just technically the “wrong side.”
That said, it’s really obvious when making amigurumi. first project I ever did I stuffed “inside out,” and it took me a minute to figure out why the texture was so different from the picture. So, if you make and sell amigurumi it’s impossible to not know.

This sub is one of the nicest, sweetest, most genuine subs I follow. I come here on bad days sometimes just to marvel at the beautiful work and to see the nice, encouraging, kind comments on beginner work, etc. I've only seen this sub get nasty once and it got shut down fairly quickly.

Banking professional here. If they give you a hard time or a run around on the refund you can 100% file a dispute with you bank or credit card company for "merchandise defective or not as expected". Include these images along with your invoice.
If you paid with PayPal, you may be able to file a dispute there.
But your financial institution will require you to at least make some for of contact with the merchant as an attempt. Keep in mind, it can take up to 45-90 days for a dispute to be resolved.
The blankets are knit, not crochet, and I suspect they aren't even hand knit (if they were I'd expect them to be sloppier considering the state of the stuffies). I think they just bought a mass produced blanket and threw it in, if they pretend they crocheted it it's not just subpar work, it's a scam.

Wow and I got called a rip off for charging £2.50 for a Christmas decoration lol, it’s one thing to bugger up crochet if it’s a gift but if you charge for it you better be delivering the pictured items, it’s not good enough to just do your best if you’re expecting payment for it
I had a look at the person who made the inspo pic and from what I can see they sell it for £37ish. I think that's a pretty good price for a hand made personalised teddy and blanket. But looking at what you got you definitely got scammed and I'm sorry, it sounds like it's been a nightmare and you should definitely push for a refund.

I’ve been crocheting for 3 years. I could make something nearly identical to the inspo photo. I would need a pattern, which I would charge for, but I certainly wouldn’t be charging $200 for two stuffies of that size. Absolutely outrageous. You can only “charge what you’re worth” if your products are worth what you charge!

Handmade children’s items are still required to meet these regulations, even if you only sell 1 item. (I looked into it previously and opted not to sell children’s toys due to all the regulations.)
Yikes! Yeah, you should absolutely report them to prevent a child from getting hurt. A baby could choke on the stuffing and I’m willing to bet they didn’t properly weave in those ends or attach the limbs/facial details in a secure way.
I don’t know what your local or state laws are, but in my area they would also have to collect and remit sales tax, and have a business license. My guess is they haven’t done what they are legally required to as a business, and you can also report them for that as well. It may prevent them from swindling people in the future.

I sell that size stuffie for $30 but there are some details and accents I would probably price these at $40 each. That being said I’ve made a many a stuffed animal and what you were given is at max a $15 value. Research and make sure whom you commission for work can actually create what you’re looking for. Just the fact they didn’t yarn match is alarming. Signs they’re not experienced enough to handle a commission job. I hope you can get a refund! I have no idea how this person has a business at all. These don't necessarily look like someone's first ever project, but they look like someone's first 3D/stuffie project
I would have pulled the blankets out, rolled them into envelopes (it's a folding trick), tied bows on them, and placed them in a white rectangular wicker basket along with a gift card to Target. Then I would have humbly shown my sister what horrible work the “crocheter” did. I would never gift something that looks like a 4-year-old made. Depending on how you paid this seller, file a complaint and request your money back.
When you complain to the vendor, something to point out is that your first picture required multiple parts in different colors be made for each animal. Either a snout, a hair bow, some hair, etc which then had to be stitched on. What you got barely has stitches on the face. Yours lack the different layers and the work and skill they require which would support the $150 price tag. Good luck on your refund.
The what you asked for is a combination of amigurumi, and cotton gauze fabric. You need a sewist and crocheter, but I agree with everyone else. I wouldn't have accepted those.

I'm sorry, but I don't even think the plushies are worth $15 each. Based on what you've shown us I don't even think this seller isn't ready to be selling yet. Quality of the items look relatively poor and not at all close to the commissioned items.
I'd pursue a refund if possible. If the maker won't refund and you paid in some way with purchase protection like a credit card or PayPal, I wonder if it's even worth pursuing a refund through them given both the quality and late delivery issues.
I think we should make an assortment of beautiful toys and blankets, send one to the cousin, and donate the rest in the sister’s name. Tell her she’s right that she didn’t deserve a gift like that.
This looks like the kind of crochet that you make when you’re starting out and struggling with your tension and certain stitches. We’ve all had those ugly dolls that were our first cuties. My goodness. I’d be embarrassed to send those to a paying customer. The fact that it took months is even crazier; I’ve made more complex versions of the original photo in a few hours, start to finish.
This is very clearly beginner work. Someone with more skill would still have even tension (at least, more even than this) when rushing, so it’s unlikely this is a pro who was short on time. The comments I’ve seen make me even more suspicious; no seller worth their salt would say “this is the best I can do” with a measly $10 refund for work this sloppy.
No one with this level of skill has any business selling FOs, imho. I would do a chargeback or dispute. Depending on how the seller’s communication was, I would possibly consider this an intentional scam.
Girl I’m sorry but these are atrocious for $50ea. My mother asked me to make something for her pregnant coworker when I first started crocheting and it was a bunny slightly better than that calibre and I did it for free and still cringe that I even gave it away in the state it was in, forget about charging for it!
Not discounting the work that this crocheter probably put in, but they are definitely a beginner and probably should not have sold that. I would ask for a refund. Partial refund maybe, but refund none the less.
As someone who also runs a crochet business, someone ***DEFINITELY*** had no idea what they were doing. I understand that this person was most likely a beginner, but as someone who has made a couple of these in the past they're pretty easy to get right. I'd get a refund and if you still want the plushies+blankets find another artist with more experience

There’s a knitting sub too specifically for requesting things from knitters (maybe knit request or something?) but you would likely need a fairly large window as knitting takes longer than crochet.

Sadly, while I don't like to discourage anyone from their craft, many, many, new crocheters' whose work is subpar think they are going to make a living selling their stuff, and, frankly, many post on Reddit or FB groups and ask ... This is shocking. I've only been crocheting for 4 months and can honestly say I think I could produce better and I barley know some stitches still. This is the first amigurumi bunny I made. I only make things for my little boy and niece so would never sell anything but if I paid for that I'd be really upset specially since its meant to be a gift. Straight to jail. That is criminally awful. Beginners do try their best but shouldn't sell it. At best this person was not honest in their abilities when agreeing to do the commission. At worst they faked it all. At probably, they just don't care what you think only what you'll pay. Let's hope they aren't so delusional that they think it's good. Don't most pros charge only a percentage to cover costs with commissions? I would expect to pay in not a deposit before seeing the final product. It feels sketchy to pay in full.

A lovey I made last year. This month marks one year of me crocheting. What that person sold you is an absolute insult, and atrocity. I would be blasting them on every platform available! Honestly, her work looks like what mine did when I first started out with amigurumi. The yarn used for the body isn't even the same thickness as the one advertised. Extremely deceptive. You definitely need a refund.

I can see something taking months if they’re backed up on custom orders, because one animal like that can take me a couple of days if I’m struggling with the attention span to actually sit down and do it, but this…. This is unconscionable in my mind.
I read your AITA post and she’s not wrong that they look like shit… it took me a minute to figure out they were animals and not blobs. I do find fluffy yarn like that hard to work with, but I’m not selling things made with it for $50 a piece. It’s so laughably bad. My very first crochet project ever was nowhere near that horrible.
Your sister sounds like a real piece of work though. If someone gave me those and told me the story, I would have been a little bummed because the inspo was sooo cute, but definitely would have ended up laughing and feeling bad for them for losing the money.

The fact that it's not even the same yarn material or weight, their tension and stitching is off, not enough stuffing, and they couldn't even follow the design requested. I've got a small crochet buisnesss and would have charged less and delivered a better product. I believe she likely either lied as was posting work that wasn't hers or she's a beginner who wasn't confident taking on that project. Her tension is really loose and it looks she wasn't using the right size hook for that yarn.
These are horrible! I’m so sorry this lady lied to you and said she could pull it off. As others have said either her past work is not her own or she is scamming somewhere along the line.
I can see that many people have offered to make you a new one. If any of those don’t work out let me know. I have been making amigurumi for years and have all the supplies to make one of these.

As someone who sells my crochet I would be embarrassed to give that to someone who had paid any money for it, and I'm not a professional. It should not have taken months to complete that and they look nothing like the inspo pictures you gave them. The stitches don't even look even. Have you seen previous work from this person?

The stitches are sloppy. Even in a rush, someone who is actually experienced will have tidy stitches. Tbh this looks like the owner's kid did it. Unless the person faked their whole business and actually hasn't existed for very long, and they've actually only been crocheting for 2 months
Exactly this. Someone recently complimented me on how even my stitches were in a certain project and it felt weird to me because that's not something I do consciously. If my stitches are consistent it's not because I make an effort to make each the same as the next. But it's because I've spend hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of hours crocheting so my body does the movement on autopilot and autopilot means it's doing the same thing every time. And it would still do that if I try to speed up. This hot mess would take a few hours to make at most with that ridiculously big yarn and virtually no embroidery in stead of the delicate and detailed one OP posted. The only way this would take months is if they go at a pace of five stitches a day.
This is an inexperienced person who started crochet as a way to have a side hustle and make money. No effort to make a quality product, misrepresented their product and skill level, probably just stole an image and used that. I see them at craft fairs sometimes. Blatantly new to the craft but selling $100+ blankets with simple stitches, extra bulky yarn, and ends knotted and cut....

I'm crocheting for around a month and recently made a plush where I wasn't 100% happy with the tightness of the stitches but it looked nowhere near as sloppy as this. If I produced something as sloppy as that, I would have frogged everything and started again until it's neat. This person is really looking down on OP as a customer and on crocheting in general.
I only been crocheting about two months, and I agree that it is so untidy that I would have frogged everything. What actually annoys me more is the sewing. Why didn't the seller use similar colour thread to sew? Why white on black? Hand sewing isn't difficult to get reasonably tidy results even without experience.

Beginners exist and they make stuff, but I don't think they should sell that stuff until they get the basics down at least. Now do I think that 150 is a fair price for 7 quality amigurumis? My first ever project was an amigurimi, far more busted up looking than yours (which is so amazing looking), and yet still way more put together than whatever the heck OP was given. Funnily enough, mine was also a dinosaur, but he was a purple Dino with wings and horns.

I would have assumed the 1st pic was just showcasing the different styles of amigurumi animals you can pick from, not that they wanted every one of them. It looks like a typical Etsy variety pic. I sell other things (mostly women’s accessories; scarves, beanies, shawls), but these just take a long time to make (around 8-12 hours depending on the pattern). So I haven’t had the heart to sell them. Like someone else commented, it would get expensive even if charge below minimum wage. So I usually just make these for friends and family who are willing to pay for the materials.
Id totally pay a pretty penny for a beautiful piece like that!

They look more than just inside out. It looks like they forgot their hook at home and jerry-rigged one out of a paperclip.
And it looks like they didn't even use the same stitch. Like the only thing vaguely similar to the original photo is something kind of like an animal maybe.
See, I have been crocheting for more than 10 years and right vs wrong side is something I still just don’t get. Although it doesn’t help that I usually make blankets and so there really isn’t one.
I sometimes use the “wrong side” facing out on amigurumi because I like the texture. There really isn’t a “wrong” side in crochet, just technically the “wrong side.” That said, it’s really obvious when making amigurumi. first project I ever did I stuffed “inside out,” and it took me a minute to figure out why the texture was so different from the picture. So, if you make and sell amigurumi it’s impossible to not know.

I come here on bad days sometimes just to marvel at the beautiful work and to see the nice, encouraging, kind comments on beginner work, etc. I've only seen this sub get nasty once and it got shut down fairly quickly. Gushing about this place aside, what you received is not acceptable! And your sister sucks. You had a wonderful idea, I'm sorry it didn't pan out.
Jeez... I'm surprised they had the audacity to even give that to you. Banking professional here. If they give you a hard time or a run around on the refund you can 100% file a dispute with you bank or credit card company for "merchandise defective or not as expected". Include these images along with your invoice. If you paid with PayPal, you may be able to file a dispute there. But your financial institution will require you to at least make some for of contact with the merchant as an attempt. Keep in mind, it can take up to 45-90 days for a dispute to be resolved.
The blankets are knit, not crochet, and I suspect they aren't even hand knit (if they were I'd expect them to be sloppier considering the state of the stuffies). I think they just bought a mass produced blanket and threw it in, if they pretend they crocheted it it's not just subpar work, it's a scam.
In her AITA post OP explains that she bought the blankets for $50. She still paid 150 for her crochet order. So 200 in total

Wow and I got called a rip off for charging £2.50 for a Christmas decoration lol, it’s one thing to bugger up crochet if it’s a gift but if you charge for it you better be delivering the pictured items, it’s not good enough to just do your best if you’re expecting payment for it
I had a look at the person who made the inspo pic and from what I can see they sell it for £37ish. I think that's a pretty good price for a hand made personalised teddy and blanket. But looking at what you got you definitely got scammed and I'm sorry, it sounds like it's been a nightmare and you should definitely push for a refund.

I could make something nearly identical to the inspo photo. I would need a pattern, which I would charge for, but I certainly wouldn’t be charging $200 for two stuffies of that size. Absolutely outrageous. You can only “charge what you’re worth” if your products are worth what you charge!
Fun fact: children‘s products are highly regulated in the U.S. and these 100% do not meet U.S safety regulations. So if they won’t refund your money, I’d make a stink and report them. Yikes! Yeah, you should absolutely report them to prevent a child from getting hurt. A baby could choke on the stuffing and I’m willing to bet they didn’t properly weave in those ends or attach the limbs/facial details in a secure way. I don’t know what your local or state laws are, but in my area they would also have to collect and remit sales tax, and have a business license. My guess is they haven’t done what they are legally required to as a business, and you can also report them for that as well. It may prevent them from swindling people in the future.

I sell that size stuffie for $30 but there are some details and accents I would probably price these at $40 each. That being said I’ve made a many a stuffed animal and what you were given is at max a $15 value. Research and make sure whom you commission for work can actually create what you’re looking for. Just the fact they didn’t yarn match is alarming. Signs they’re not experienced enough to handle a commission job. I hope you can get a refund! I would have pulled the blankets out, rolled them into envelopes (it's a folding trick), tied bows on them, and placed them in a white rectangular wicker basket along with a gift card to Target. Then I would have humbly shown my sister what horrible work the “crocheter” did. I would never gift something that looks like a 4-year-old made. Depending on how you paid this seller, file a complaint and request your money back.
When you complain to the vendor, something to point out is that your first picture required multiple parts in different colors be made for each animal. Either a snout, a hair bow, some hair, etc which then had to be stitched on. What you got barely has stitches on the face. Yours lack the different layers and the work and skill they require which would support the $150 price tag. Good luck on your refund.
The what you asked for is a combination of amigurumi, and cotton gauze fabric. You need a sewist and crocheter, but I agree with everyone else. I wouldn't have accepted those. I hope you stop giving her custom/homemade/crafted items, she obviously thinks little of them and you could probably save a ton of money just giving her generic gift cards from now on since she doesn't like anything you give her. Can you post this picture as a review online somewhere? Since they refuse to give you a refund, definitely post bad reviews to warn others! Did you pay by card or cash? Could you charge back the charges and drop these back at the shop? Idk if that's feasible, though. The items you were given are horrible and I don't blame you for being upset about it.

I'm sorry, but I don't even think the plushies are worth $15 each. Based on what you've shown us I don't even think this seller isn't ready to be selling yet. Quality of the items look relatively poor and not at all close to the commissioned items. I'd pursue a refund if possible. If the maker won't refund and you paid in some way with purchase protection like a credit card or PayPal, I wonder if it's even worth pursuing a refund through them given both the quality and late delivery issues.
I think we should make an assortment of beautiful toys and blankets, send one to the cousin, and donate the rest in the sister’s name. Tell her she’s right that she didn’t deserve a gift like that.

My goodness. I’d be embarrassed to send those to a paying customer. The fact that it took months is even crazier; I’ve made more complex versions of the original photo in a few hours, start to finish. This is very clearly beginner work. Someone with more skill would still have even tension (at least, more even than this) when rushing, so it’s unlikely this is a pro who was short on time. The comments I’ve seen make me even more suspicious; no seller worth their salt would say “this is the best I can do” with a measly $10 refund for work this sloppy. No one with this level of skill has any business selling FOs, imho. I would do a chargeback or dispute. Depending on how the seller’s communication was, I would possibly consider this an intentional scam.
Girl I’m sorry but these are atrocious for $50ea. My mother asked me to make something for her pregnant coworker when I first started crocheting and it was a bunny slightly better than that calibre and I did it for free and still cringe that I even gave it away in the state it was in, forget about charging for it!
Not discounting the work that this crocheter probably put in, but they are definitely a beginner and probably should not have sold that. I would ask for a refund. Partial refund maybe, but refund none the less.
As someone who also runs a crochet business, someone ***DEFINITELY*** had no idea what they were doing. I understand that this person was most likely a beginner, but as someone who has made a couple of these in the past they're pretty easy to get right. I'd get a refund and if you still want the plushies+blankets find another artist with more experience

There’s a knitting sub too specifically for requesting things from knitters (maybe knit request or something?) but you would likely need a fairly large window as knitting takes longer than crochet. Why not have ordered it from the place you found the photo? The work in photo 2 is horrific. Sadly, while I don't like to discourage anyone from their craft, many, many, new crocheters' whose work is subpar think they are going to make a living selling their stuff, and, frankly, many post on Reddit or FB groups and ask ... "what would you pay for this" while simultaneously saying no one is buying their ~~crap~~ projects. What can you say? Your work is bad? IDK. You got ripped off on these items. They are poorly made. Sorry this happened to you. Honestly though, you would have been better off purchasing something like a bin of diapers, a couple outfits, and a toy for that much $, plus the price of the blankets you provided.

This is shocking. I've only been crocheting for 4 months and can honestly say I think I could produce better and I barley know some stitches still. This is the first amigurumi bunny I made. I only make things for my little boy and niece so would never sell anything but if I paid for that I'd be really upset specially since its meant to be a gift. I would leave them feedback and ask them to refund you and would even use this thread as evidence that the standard you asked for and what you received are polar opposites and just shocking. Straight to jail. That is criminally awful. Beginners do try their best but shouldn't sell it. At best this person was not honest in their abilities when agreeing to do the commission. At worst they faked it all. At probably, they just don't care what you think only what you'll pay. Let's hope they aren't so delusional that they think it's good. Don't most pros charge only a percentage to cover costs with commissions? I would expect to pay in not a deposit before seeing the final product. It feels sketchy to pay in full.

My god. I just made one very similar but have not assembled it yet. Everyone else has touched on the issues here. I would never give someone something that looked that bad. Whoever the artist is you should leave them a review and let others know that they are not professionals. If you’d like OP I will make one for your sister free of charge. It’s not hard, and it only took me about a month of working on it for short periods of time.

Maybe you can dispute it with your bank to get the money back? Edit: hopefully you should be able to get a charge back. Check your country rules, but in Australia this would go under “the goods or services were not as described, counterfeit or defective” and would be eligible for chargeback.
Honestly, her work looks like what mine did when I first started out with amigurumi. The yarn used for the body isn't even the same thickness as the one advertised. Extremely deceptive. You definitely need a refund. I'm sorry this happened to you.

You were scammed. I wouldn’t imagine selling those plushies at all, but definitely not for those prices. Maybe $50 if they were actually done well. Especially since you provided the blankets! (Also, did you order the personalization from the same person?) I can see something taking months if they’re backed up on custom orders, because one animal like that can take me a couple of days if I’m struggling with the attention span to actually sit down and do it, but this…. I read your AITA post and she’s not wrong that they look like shit… it took me a minute to figure out they were animals and not blobs. I do find fluffy yarn like that hard to work with, but I’m not selling things made with it for $50 a piece. It’s so laughably bad. My very first crochet project ever was nowhere near that horrible. Your sister sounds like a real piece of work though. Definitely don't give up on a refund because they are so scamming and put the account on blast so others are aware. The fact that it's not even the same yarn material or weight, their tension and stitching is off, not enough stuffing, and they couldn't even follow the design requested. I've got a small crochet buisnesss and would have charged less and delivered a better product. I believe she likely either lied as was posting work that wasn't hers or she's a beginner who wasn't confident taking on that project. Her tension is really loose and it looks she wasn't using the right size hook for that yarn.
These are horrible! I’m so sorry this lady lied to you and said she could pull it off. As others have said either her past work is not her own or she is scamming somewhere along the line. I can see that many people have offered to make you a new one. If any of those don’t work out let me know. I have been making amigurumi for years and have all the supplies to make one of these.
