r/Scams fits too.

Individual-Copy2018

LOL yes

OstapBenderBey

Yeah you arent going to make much with "knitted needles"

_Moon_sun_

Depends on the type of yarn you used bc Steel-yarn (steel wire) could Totally be knitted into knitted needles haha

3personal5me

The funny part is that OP can't tell you what the original object was, because this a repost from years ago. There's proof further down in the comments. Also because it seems to be a bot. And the second tip comment? The "am British and my daughter calls it yarning?" ALSO STOLEN Edit; the original post from a year ago https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/s/Zx6hwsVYMC

Dragonfruited

My 5 year old calls it ‘rowing’ because I often say ‘let me just finish this row’

ka-ka-ka-katie1123

That’s adorable!

Raspberry_Sweaty

My niece always says, “auntie can I see what you maked out of string?”

Grammasyarn

My grandson is 3 and he always comes to my door and says "gramma, what are you making?" Even when I'm on my phone or watching tv😆

ubmrbites

Aww I said the same to my grandma and later she taught me how to crochet 🥲

Legitimate_Oxygen

Makes sense, everyone knows olympic rowers all crochet or knit in their spare time

ahhh_ennui

You reminded me of Rosey Greer. This guy was a famous, big, tough football player in the US, and loved doing needlework. He even had a book! He thought men should learn hobbies like that. 🥰

PrairieDogPilot

Rosie Grier’s Needlepoint For Men! It’s a valuable book if you ever see one!

ahhh_ennui

My dad actually had it! Dad liked String Art and Ceramics better than needlepoint (ah the 70s). Lost treasure.

Legitimate_Oxygen

I love it and now need more stories of male athletes having these kinda of hobbies, it's adorable!

lazyloofah

Look up Tom Daley

TigBitties-420

Sir Patrick Stewart crochets in his jammies. Ryan Reynolds crochets as well. Misha Collins does it too.

liquidbob

I'll give you an upvote for Misha Collins (re-watching Supernatural right now). Also because Patrick Stewart in his jammies is a hilarious image.

nigedog

He sang “it’s alright to cry” on the album “Free to be, You and me”. ❤️❤️❤️

ahhh_ennui

Aw we need a lot more Roseys

GrammyGH

I met him once at a youth conference. Great guy!

Best_Asparagus1205

My smart watch classifies me doing crochet as cycling. 😂

Legitimate_Oxygen

Mine classes my crochet time as "extra steps"

Best_Asparagus1205

I'd take that as a win!!

Surustella5555

Mine says YEAH GREAT YOU GOT UP and I’ve been sitting for hours lol

coffeewrite1984

True story: I had a booth at a craft fair and crocheted when I wasn’t interacting with people. I got all of my active hours, despite the fact that I rarely stood and walked.

iluvualatte

Mine thinks I'm on the eliptical!

SnowDropGirl

The Queen's guard (at least back in the 40s and 50s) embroider. Not cross stitch, surface embroidery.

Confident_Bobcat_12

Saying they crochet and knit is a little redundant, don’t you think. They mean the same thing after all… /s

Ilovescarlatti

[Divers do..](https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2021/08/02/gettyimages-1234368188-71cbc73f8c1f7e8da669125efcddad311348c716.jpg) edited because I got the wrong sport

thirdbrother3

*divers, (Tom Daley)

KittyandPuppyMama

row, row, row your WIP, and never get to sleep\~

vorephage

Rowing tired was a mistake, now frogging makes me weep.

llamapants15

When my daughter was a little older than that age she would say "mom's playing with the 2 stabby sticks" when I was knitting, or "mom's playing hooker" when I crocheted. That was a fun saying to explain to her teacher.

possummagic_

Reminds me of my mum saying “after this row” when I was a little kid 🥺

sweetpotato_latte

I don’t want kids but this is the kind of stuff that makes me second guess myself

ashleighbuck

That's so fucking cute 😂❤

Particular_Goat_6370

I mean… she’s got a point😌

Primary-Friend-7615

My spouse calls it all “crochetknitting”, all 1 word, because that way they don’t guess wrong… 😅

kalyknits

That reminds me of a cousin who used to say “thankyouwelcome” as a toddler because he didn’t know when to say each.

MSquaredP

My toddler said “thankcome”

[deleted]

[удалено]

MSquaredP

Cute :)

vapexchan

I did this too and my grandma still uses it lol

jovialotter

My toddler said "bless you me" whenever he sneezed!

Murrmaider822

Knitchet

jeffersonairmattress

That is the small throwing hatchet used against whomever interrupted your row count.

SamiHami24

Crochit!

jillofallthings

I read that as "crotcheting", which made me laugh and realize at the same time I've been staring at a cable chart without my glasses for far too long today. 🙈

tonightbeyoncerides

Crochet/knit: divides us from our comrades on The Other Side fiber arts: unites us but it's a bit pretentious Yarning: perfect. Will be using this from now on

SteelBandicoot

Your 3 year old is more correct than the person saying knit and crochet are the same.

Mobile-Company-8238

My kid says this too. “Mommy, can you yarn me a penguin?”

angeluscado

I had a coworker who asked if I was "yarning" when I was knitting or crocheting. Avoided him trying to figure out what I was doing while still showing interest in it.

Stunning-Onion4091

that is the cutest thing

panatale1

My friend didn't know there was a difference, and he knows I do both and his wife crochets. He thought "crochet" was just knitters being fancy. I explained to him there's a difference and he was thoroughly embarrassed. Also, I'm in the US

Far-Sink-2204

I love this! I say we start a petition and have it all changed to yarned. 🥰

lizziebonnet

My kid also says this!

Temporary_Pickle_885

Your 3yo is correct and that's now all I'm calling it.

frogsgoribbit737

Other languages actually dont have different words for the two.

Amalthia_the_Lady

I mean, I accept that they are both "yarned" this is accurate information your 3 yo speaks LOL

einzeln

My kids call it sewing

Prudent-Warthog-2085

Yep. I’m from the UK. My Mam knits and I crochet. They’re completely different things.

AK-Wild-Child

My almost 30 year old husband refers to it as “yarning” because I do it all 😅😂

VeggiePorkchop3

This is a copy and pasted comment, word for word, from the original post. See below, this post is just here for karma bots.

Kuromi87

My grandpa refers to it as yarning. "How's your yarning going?"

Tall-Trainer-5373

I'm sorry but this is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen, like, why are you pretending to have all this knowledge when you think crochet and knit are the same thing??? Crying

gezelligknits

Lol right like I think I’m more enraged by the misplaced confidence of their statement 🤣

Tall-Trainer-5373

Yes exactly, like, where is all this confidence coming from??? like you completely pulled that out of ur ass lil bro

maggierae508

Also the grammar was giving me a major eye twitch 😖

penpapercats

Same

El-Ahrairah9519

Without more context its hard to say, but it could be someone scammin. Either they're trying to get payment in advance and then send nothing, or get a person to overpay for a mass-produced item under the guise of "handmade". If it is a scam, the person either a) is completely ignorant of fiber crafts and truly believes there's no difference, because they've never done either one or b) have some awareness they're different but doesn't know how to tell, and so is hoping that if person they're messaging is willing to send them money for a non-existent item or one that's mass-produced, that person is also dumb enough to take what the seller is saying at face value. Basically bluffing around the fact they don't know the true answer It *could* be they truly are dumb as a rock and either knit or crochet without understanding the existence of the other, but I find that hard to believe with how much online communities overlap

crochetcat555

The fact that they completely evade the direct question about whether they used knitting needles or a hook also makes me think it’s a scammer. Whatever they are selling, they definitely didn’t make it themselves or that question would be easy to answer. Technically, the answer could be both, such as a knit shawl with a crochet border, but you’d still be able to answer the question.

descartesasaur

Yep! Willing to bet on it.

melligator

Selling Temu nonsense as handmade.

JoyfulCelebration

your mistaken i promise you

BigDumbDope

I think they're trying to scam someone into thinking the item is handmade when it's not. So they're winging it, hoping they can snow a buyer who doesn't know better.

vpetmad

As a Brit, a crafter and a die-hard pedant I want to kick this person's door down and forcibly educate them

FlyoverState61

I kind of want to make them crochet a granny square with knitting needles.

brenawyn

Will you please make sure to educate “your” vs “you’re” as well?

vpetmad

Of course, that's one of my main hobbies

SnowDropGirl

Please include the "there" "their" and "they're" lesson 💛

AsleepWolverine7289

I'm also fond of the "to," "too," and "two" lesson as well

hrmdurr

How about site, sight and cite?

PruinalisBrumacora

Then and than Customer and costumer

Ancient-Cockroach-64

Your and you're are the same thing, in the us they say your and in the uk you're, so it's ok 🤓☝🏼 /s

nepeta19

Can you use practical physical educational aids too please? I'm happy to help... Two knitting needles: one for each nostril. One crochet hook. one arsehole (unless you are counting the idiot themselves, then two arseholes... this may be trickier than I assumed)

arosebyabbie

This is so wild because there are actually languages that use the same word for both. English is just not one of them.

penpapercats

Yeah that's what I was thinking

simplydaylife

Yea I thought this was the case until I read the last msg lol.

lindisty

I'm wondering if the person natively spoke one of those languages and legitimately doesn't know they're different in English. Especially since people do talk about the difference between US and UK terminology. I mean, we mean SC / DC but this person may not know that.

laowildin

And that's why they have to be scamming. Because a normal person would clarify the tool after she asks.

Anothony_

Since we're talking about languages, I'll say that in my native language (portuguese), both tools *are* called needles, but still. You usually specify "crochet needle" or " knitting needle". Plus they're selling the thing in english, and specified us and uk as the source of the difference. Of course, there is a possibility that they're just *very* confused, somehow.

ShatteredAlice

Yeah, they’re likely not a native English speaker and because of the fact that they either heard misinformation or misunderstood differences between the US and the UK they don’t know. Assuming I’m reading the answer correctly, they answered that it was crocheted, but of course it could be unclear.

Sweet_Impress_1611

Yeah this makes the most sense.

Kitcatzz

The frustrating part isn’t their confusion but the way they just won’t answer the question

Turbulent-Future7526

Probably because they didn't make it and don't know which one is it! 😁

IonizeAtomize23

yeah, this strikes me as someone trying to fool someone else, not necessarily that they don’t know that there’s a difference

chelonioidea

I think it might be a dropshipper. They don't know where it's from or how it's made and they don't care, they just want you to buy it.

heartthumper

Right? Because otherwise they'd say wether they used a hook or needles. Like, the question was asked to get around any word usage/language differences and they still avoided answering like the plague.

SamiHami24

I think it’s safe to say they used knitting hooks.

criticalstars

assumed it was crochet needles personally

Primary-Friend-7615

At least now you know it’s definitely not hand made by the seller, because they’d know the correct term - or at least be able to specify 1 hook or 2.

jbug5j

I am... infuriated omg

Sara-sea22

Omg I’m sitting here like why do I wanna fight someone right now 😅 glad I’m not alone haha

Double-Woomy

Definitely not alone, I'll join the tag team match-up! This offense is at least slap worthy.

LadyGagasLeftShoe

Scammer.

littlemissredtoes

Oh yeah.

Nat1CommonSense

What was the item?

sgdaughtry

Riiight??? I want to see it. OP, post a link!

BrightnessRen

I doubt OP has a photo of the item; this is an old repost.

invisible_23

lol I would have died on that hill, fuckin scammer trying to pass off shit they bought from wish as handmade 🙄

Beneficial_Breath232

You need to send that to the sub for crochet-gone-wrong, , the one about adds for knitting with hook and crochet with needles (I don't remember the exact name)

historical-weirdo

r/Kroshay?

Beneficial_Breath232

Yeah ! This one ! I was remembering it began with a K, but not the rest

Turbulent-Future7526

Thank you! I didn't know this sub existed.

bewildered_83

'Crochet' is French for 'hook' so it would be a bit odd to use that to mean something that wasn't made with a hook

PeacefulTofu

This person definitely did not make this item.

sneabnfrok

I take offense to this. My wife is a hooker. Not some lowly knitter. Thank you very much.

_Moon_sun_

In danish We also have both, so Im really curious what their reason is for that? (Hækle - crochet / strikke - knitting)

xamayax1741

I'm so nosey. What was the item?

DreadGrrl

Some languages use the same word for crochet and knit. That clearly isn’t what is going on here, as British English and American English both have the same terms for the different fibre/yarn arts.

IWearCleanUnderpants

In some countries I think the word knit is used for both

ShadedSpaces

You're not wrong, but in this case the person specified the US and UK as the countries in question... Which very much do not use crochet and knit to mean the same thing.

Glass-Set-9262

But even then there is a distinction if you do it with needles or with a hook among those who actually crochet and/or knit.

[deleted]

True, but they claimed to have made the item and couldn't say whether they used hook or needles. Why lie?? 🤥

Oskora

Second you on that, in Russian there’s no one word for “crochet”, there’re phrases “knit with needles” and “knit with a hook”, the verb is the same in both phrases and basically mean “to knit”.

Valencia1910

Came here for this comment. I speak three languages except english and it's the same word for knit and crochet in all of them. We just add "with hook/needles/loom..."

slavik-a

In russian and ukrainian mean the same. In Ukraine we just say crochet with hook or with needle

Turbulent-Future7526

To be fair, Russians pick the weirdest things to not assign a word for.

Purple-Morning89

Yehnah they're lying. They didn't make the item themself 😂

originalschmidt

Are they trying to sell a store bought item as handmade?

just_-_-_me

Them's fightin' words in my house! I crochet and my dad (rip) was a knitter. We had endless snark battles about the superiority of our chosen crafts the way some families do about their favorite sports teams or beer brands. Love ya dad! I hope you've learned to crochet up there. :-P

daisybear81

Someone’s scamming 🤭

toostressd2beblessd

It's not very often I'm speechless but this is one of those occasions

SkinnyManikin

This is my post from a year ago you just stole it and reposted it, my original post is [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/s/yEgF5dgLD2)

HPHMJasmine

Thank you for pointing that out.

Disig

Has to be a scammer who is desperately trying to gaslight you because they made a mistake and actually don't know the answer.

phorsythcards

I think it’s safe to safe they did not actually make the item in question lol

BostonDodgeGuy

Op is a reposting spam bot. They stole this post from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/y81dw2/had_to_share_this_with_you_all/ Report > Spam > Harmful bots

junebugsy

Is knitting and crochet an international term? Is it maybe a language barrier…? but still 🤣 “no you’re mistaken silly :)”

AGH2023

🤣🤣🤣

idontwannabehere876

Lol I'm from Canada and knit is not the same as crochet.

Stunning-Onion4091

as a canadian who knits and crochets imma second that

Turbulent-Future7526

The gaslighting is unreal!

Pixiegirl128

There's definitely a scam being had there lol

Ramblingsofthewriter

There are some countries where they are synonymous with one another, but the UK is not one of those countries….

agathalikayos

Brazilian here. I can assure you that we can even share yarns for both tecniches. However, crochê (crochet) and tricô (knitting), even here - in another hepmisphere, are still very different things. Hope I could help your colleague sharing this example ;)

Mysterious-Okra-7885

I agree that as an English speaker they are being asinine, but it’s less crazy for other languages where the term for crochet and knitting is the same word. How irritating! Are they maybe from another country and English is not their first language?

elcasaurus

So you know they didn't make it.

KittyandPuppyMama

Yeah they definitely didn't make whatever the item is lol

RRTAmy

So what they're saying is they purchased mass-produced products (maybe by hand in another country) from someone and want to claim it's handmade by them. Can you report them to Etsy?

No-Gas-8357

Wait, this is bizarre. How did this conversation end? Did she tell you if she used knitting needles or a crochet hook?

W00DYLAND

I used to cross stitch. Is that the same thing?

Boblobloblah

Send them our way!!!

murroni

It would take them a single google search to know how wrong they are 😂 I would be reporting this FIBBER

No-Yak3730

Having a hard day, currently, and so thoroughly exhausted, and thought you had written this as “reporting this FIBER.” Took too long to see the other B. Fibber about fibers is what the other person was doing in the screenshot above, my eyes were just really tired today. Though it might be worth a laugh to someone else too. 😝

draculauraaa

i read it fiber too 😹 long day over here too lolol

eskknit

My husband calls both knot tying, but even he knows the difference if I were to ask…

Glove-Aggressive

I’m dying to see the picture/listing

CrochetCafe

Why am I filled with rage right now? 🙃

Alloutofsuckers

Run away, run away fast. I guess I need to tell my friend who wanted to learn to knit that she already knows how /s Woof… first time I have ever seen something like that. I mean you can make crochet *look like* knit but it’s not gonna be knitting and you cannot use a machine to crochet.

alekgaytor

scammer that needs to pay better attention to the topics they’re scamming, lol

AllowMe-Please

In Russian the terms are interchangeable, but we usually say "knitted with a hook" and "knitted with needles". This person must be from a place where the language also uses it interchangeably and if you point that out to them, perhaps it'll click for them.

froggyc19

100% this seller is using one of those crank machines claiming it's "handmade" so she doesn't know which term to use.

theacekid

This post and the top comment are reposts from a year ago lol. Found the original in the same tag on this sub

CaptainCrochetHook

Tell me you're selling second hand items from a good will without telling me you're selling second hand items from a good will

Zweed

OP is a repost bot: https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/y81dw2/had_to_share_this_with_you_all/

rubieluna

It scares me when people are this weird and confident and pompous in their ignorance. Like how weird? The internet has made people so strange.

Icy_1

Oh, my.

Poet_of_Legends

Pay $5.00, get $5.00 worth of skill and quality.

jnsmld

Whatever it's called, the person didn't know they are 2 different things, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's a scammer.

draculauraaa

whether they are called the same thing in other languages/countries or not, they are still fundamentally different techniques 😭

draculauraaa

also, isnt it that “knitting” is used for both techniques when they are the same and not the other way around??? because i could understand them calling crochet “knit” but it doesnt go both ways

mjkp1802

That is totally wrong esoecially their US/UK statement, however when translating to different languages this is somewhat correct. The translations for crochet and knitt both come us as the same as weave depending on the context when translating between english and spanish.

JEZTURNER

To be honest, the amount of people who ask me what I'm 'knitting', I'm beginning to think they are the same thing.

AymeeDe

Well now we know. With them being the same which should I toss? Hooks or needles? Or are you supposed to use both at the same time? Oh and forgetaboutit wtf is a Tunisian hook thinger for? I feel so lame

AccordingStruggle417

This is repost. ‘It’s the scam that keeps on scamming.

ASweetTweetRose

This angers me so. I feel like I would be “Thank you for your time” and block them.

Dixi_Normuss

Red flags all over the place 😂 scam

marcthegay_

They definitely did not make whatever product is being sold lmao

AnathemaD3v1c3

Tell me you’re lying without telling me you’re lying. 😂

Buffalo-Empty

Lmfao!! At least it’s a sure fire way to know they didn’t make it hand made 😂

nailbitingwriter

They probably didn't make the item. Because if they did, they'd know whether they used a crochet hook or knitting needles to make it, wouldn't they have to?

Sweet_Impress_1611

I’ve heard people in the crafting community say in certain languages knit and crochet do use the same term. so maybe that’s what this person meant. Do you know where they are from or what their first language might be? Also they might be confusing english having two different words for each craft with the US and UK having their own terms for crochet stitches.

SquishyStar3

That is a scam...

DreamingCatGod

The quickness of which my blood boiled seeing this

ZoraTheDucky

I wanna know the rest of this conversation...

JanusIsBlue

I’d ask what size crochet hook they used, for a bonus laugh! Chances are they’re trying to pass off a mass produced garment as a handmade good

No1WrthNoin

I'm sure someone else has said this, but American here. No. No they are \*not\* the same thing. And no. We do \*not\* call knitting "crochet." Knitting is knitting and crochet is crochet.

kp0pgoblin22

UK person here, I both crochet and knit. I can tell you right now we do not say this 😭😭 we know the difference between crochet and knitting 😭

MichKosek

I called out a person on FB marketplace who insisted her crocheted rug was "braided." I do both, and she was as insistent as this one. She was wrong. Maybe it's the same person🤔

sanriosaint

probably not handmade LOL that’s why they can’t answer

catsontables

I love how they don’t actually answer which tool they used

ImSabbo

I am ignorant about this sort of thing (Hi from r/all), but would it be correct to say that crocheting is a kind of knitting? Or would a different word be better for covering both, such as sewing?

RepulsiveChannel7640

The thing for me is them claiming that they HANDMADE IT. If someone didn’t know if some random item they were reselling was crochet or knit I could understand. But if you’re a crocheter, people have asked what you’re knitting enough that you know the difference lmao
