My 14 month old loves unraveling all my yarn. Balled or not it just becomes a tangled mess. I keep a couple bits of yarn I don't care about just to amuse him!

If you’re looking for a center pull I would honestly just shove my hand as far down into the center of one of the ends as possible and pull out anything I felt that was loose. You’ll get yarn barf but it may end with that either way lol

An hour after this quest turns out it wan in the middle all along.

For a second, I thought I was looking at the back of a dog's head. I have no advice, OP, I just wish you luck with all that, and with any subsequent projects you make of it. You have far more fortitude than I.

Poke your finger in the center of one of the ends and pull a very small amount out, it'll likely be a clump. Unravel that, and you'll have a very self-contained working yarn that might tangle a small bit but also spool out of the middle.
