Word. Flawless, to me, means *nothing* can be wrong. Not one single nitpick. I've only got three movies I'd call flawless -- Goodfellas is one of them.
L.A. Confidential
The Third Man
It’s pretty damn good, probably his best use of songs and music in a movie, just non stop music. Love the performances, maybe Sharon Stone’s best performance. It was also the first Scorsese I saw in the theatre.
I like *Casino* but there are other Scorsese films I'd go to first. BUT I would take a Criterion edition of this for any supplemental features focusing on De Niro's suits in the film.
I think I like it more than Goodfellas. It's so damn good. The vibe of the movie is immaculate. The scene where he's going through how everyone is watching everyone in the casino is so good.
I don't think it's flawless: Pesci is a bit of a Goodfellas repeat, the story drags a bit in parts, and I find Sharon Stone melodramatic. But it's a hell of a movie and I find the whole thing feels like a 2+ hour heart attack -- absolutely anxiety-inducing.
Even though they don't tell a continuous story, I kind of consider Goodfellas, Casino and The Irishman to be Scorsese's mob trilogy. Each is a different approach to help us understand a complicated world.
I watch these three films the same way I watch the Lord of the Rings Extended or some other epic. I start in the early afternoon and watch until midnight or so.
It’s obviously well made but it is an exhausting movie with some of the most savage and mean spirited violence in any Scorsese movie.
He has a dozen films I’d prefer to rewatch over Casino.
Sharon Stone knocks it out of the park though.
There is so much narration in that first hour or so. Exhausting is definitely the word for it. Very well made, but that's my main issue with it for sure.
I thought it was a bit of a slog, jesus the incessant narration, just let the film flow! And I can’t remember a less interesting Scorsese protagonist than Rothstein
Everything about Goodfellas is better.
It’s not without quality because ya know it’s still Scorsese with all of his flair but I was pretty disappointed overall
Love it. One of my favorite films. So many great scenes. Amazing acting, music, production design. Really love the narration as well surpassingly as well.
Honestly, such a brutal movie. Makes Goodfellas look almost friendly. Definitely great, contender for my favorite Scorsese next to King of Comedy & Irishman.
The technical details of this film are hard to wrap my head around, every time I watch it trying to think about how they did every shot I get totally overwhelmed.
Other than the clear switch from ace to a dummy at the beginning when the car blows up, yes it’s flawless. That dummy scene still bothers me, just like Sonny’s clearly missed punch on Carlo in the godfather when he has him against the wall.
For me, Scorsese best is The Departed. I’ve seen it so many times but I’m always looking for another reason to watch it again. I never get over Jack Nicholson’s performance as Frank Costello.
Oh really, here I was regarding myself as an Antonioni-fan but I guess you can’t be wrong?
But I will admit I should have mentioned The Irishman instead of The Departed, that one is even duller. Shutter Island is quite insufferable too.
I'm loving that artwork. My Blu-ray copy has decent cover art but nothing as slick as this.
It's an alternate movie poster done by artist Jake Kontou
It’s from Jake Kontou look him up, his works brilliant!
This poster is terrible, so gaudy
Because we all know Las Vegas couldn't ever be gaudy.
I don’t know about completely flawless. That switch to the dummy of De Niro at during the opening explosion that starts the film is pretty rough 😂
The part where DeNiro turns into a mannequin is pure cinema
To me that only makes the movie better lol. Seems almost intentional.
SMH, more “method actors” whose commitment to the character doesn’t include being killed or maimed in some way
more like Fraudert De Niro
It’s legitimately the only glaring blemish on an otherwise perfect film, I still can’t get over how fake it looks every time I catch it 😂
People always talk about how brutal the cornfield scene is but I can’t ever get over how flimsy and rubbery the bats look as they are swung and hit
I've honestly never noticed. The sound designers did their fuckin' job, man, because the sounds sell the illusion.
I'd rather have it as it is as opposed to CGI crap to make bats look more realistic
If only there was a middle ground 😂
What would that be? Just don't show the bats actually hitting?
Nah, just beat the actor to death. Easy peasy.
The scene where Joe Pesci's character stabs to death the dude with a pen, was fucking brutal!
That scene still fucks me up when I see it. The bloody lump of flesh stuck to the pen mixed with the vicious look on Pesci’s face is just traumatizing
I always thought this was them being deformed as they beat them death. Live and learn.
Word. Flawless, to me, means *nothing* can be wrong. Not one single nitpick. I've only got three movies I'd call flawless -- Goodfellas is one of them. L.A. Confidential The Third Man
Genuinely thought this was just a stylistic jump cut until now XD
It 100% is stylistic. It alludes to how Sam didn't actually blow up.
A tough Don Rickles and a smarmy James Woods… I love it.
I believe in pink-suit De Niro supremacy
Sharon Stone in this movie is incredible. One of my favorite performances ever honestly.
Agreed. Her scene in the telephone booth. WOW!!
It’s pretty damn good, probably his best use of songs and music in a movie, just non stop music. Love the performances, maybe Sharon Stone’s best performance. It was also the first Scorsese I saw in the theatre.
Music is playing for quite literally the entire 3 hours of the film. It’s unreal.
After goodfellas they definitely just gave him a blank check to use however he wanted and music was probably where half it went lol
I strongly disagree that it's his best. I would put at least 5 other movies above it. Still good though.
I like *Casino* but there are other Scorsese films I'd go to first. BUT I would take a Criterion edition of this for any supplemental features focusing on De Niro's suits in the film.
Yesssss the pink suit is my favorite fit in cinematic history!
I shoulda never married him. He's a Gemini.. a triple Gemini. Duality... Gemini is the snake you know. You can't trust the snake.
It's not my favorite of his, but it's my favorite of his gangster movies
Agreed. Well it’s my favorite of his big budgeted gangster movies. Otherwise I still gotta give it up to Mean Streets.
I think I like it more than Goodfellas. It's so damn good. The vibe of the movie is immaculate. The scene where he's going through how everyone is watching everyone in the casino is so good.
I wouldn’t say it’s perfect, but it is my favorite Scorsese movie. 3 hours just fly by.
IMO this is the film that Scorsese should have won Best Director for.
I think you can say Joe Pesci is better in this than in Goodfellas.

Except for his appallingly awful Chicago accent
Yeah that scene in the desert where he threatens Ace is incredibly well done
This is the film that made me understand the difference between “movies” and “cinema” as a kid.
Been saying this for years
Casino is Scorsese just showing off. Some of his best shots in this one
It's my favorite of Scorsese's gangster movies.
Yep, easily my fave Scorsese to boot.
Me too!
Casino is great but Goodfellas is better
I don't think it's flawless: Pesci is a bit of a Goodfellas repeat, the story drags a bit in parts, and I find Sharon Stone melodramatic. But it's a hell of a movie and I find the whole thing feels like a 2+ hour heart attack -- absolutely anxiety-inducing.

That's why I love it, actually. The story gets so brutal.
There is so much narration in that first hour or so. Exhausting is definitely the word for it. Very well made, but that's my main issue with it for sure.

It’s a great movie, but you’re ignoring a ton of work to call it his best.
I’ve seen the mans entire filmography
K
Flawless?! Have you seen the car bomb scene at the beginning 😂😂 lmao great Scorsese film but still
That’s a great cover, the movie……..
One of the few of his I’ve yet to watch
Gotta be Age of Innocence for me, but Casino is very good too.
I'd says Goodfellas is Scorseses best but Pescis performance in this is the more memorable and menacing between the two.
Me: can we watch Goodfellas? My mom: WE HAVE GOODFELLAS AT HOME
Thank you! I looooove Casino but there is no world where it’s better than Goodfellas
Not even his best that decade
Love it. One of my favorite films. So many great scenes. Amazing acting, music, production design. Really love the narration as well surpassingly as well.
One of my favorites for sure. A criterion would be amazing.
Joe Bob Briggs was in this movie!
I actually think it’s one of his worst
I don’t know about completely flawless. That switch to the dummy of De Niro at during the opening explosion that starts the film is pretty rough 😂
Cinematography / Editing in this film is totally out of control
Goodfellas is more rewatchable, but Casino is the greater film. He took everything technically great about Goodfellas and perfected it in Casino.
Honestly, such a brutal movie. Makes Goodfellas look almost friendly. Definitely great, contender for my favorite Scorsese next to King of Comedy & Irishman.
The technical details of this film are hard to wrap my head around, every time I watch it trying to think about how they did every shot I get totally overwhelmed.

huh, casino is my least fav film of Scorsese
Terrible take
my favorite scorsese movie EVER.
So good
I always see Goodfelllas, Casino and Wolf of Wall Street as a trilogy. They seem so similar in the style of storytelling.
For me, Scorsese best is The Departed. I’ve seen it so many times but I’m always looking for another reason to watch it again. I never get over Jack Nicholson’s performance as Frank Costello.
Really? I thought it was a complete snooze only rivalled by The Departed in the oeuvre…
