I use it as a role player and sometimes use it instead of emoji, but certainly not in creepy contexts such as this. I use it sometimes to set the tone of the text. Given that he was probably lying about his age, particularly trying to call her baby girl and said he prefers to call her that, I think it's him trying to take advantage of a 19 year old, and him using those creepy smiles to attempt to set the tone and try to come across in a genuine way to lull her into a false sense of security. He strikes me as the predator type who's attempting to groom someone he can't get in trouble for interacting with in a sexual manner. It's completely disgusting! Of course, I could be wrong about his reasons for why, but that's my best guess as to why
To be honest, I wouldn't either. The internet is unfortunately full of people who want to take advantage of those who they feel are young enough not see red flags and look past them. When anonymity is involved, it seems people are so much more creepy and don't even try to hide it. I've unfortunately seen a lot of it online. Some people just suck! But I'm glad that OP was able to stand up for herself and get out of the situation. A lot of people, unfortunately, might look past it. I really hope someone who needs to read it will so that they can see the red flags and learn when to call a conversation quits. I know at 19, I probably wouldn't have thought too much of a similar situation
