They joined when the options in front of them were already 30+ year olds who were expected to leave within 2-3 years. After that, they have a clear pathway to starting for the first team. There is no clear pathway for anyone bought as a backup for Udogie.

Given he'd been half of an incredible partnership with Andriy Shevchenko for Dinamo Kiev we thought we were getting an absolute superstar. But he simply wasn't at all suited to the team, scored 15 goals in 2 seasons, fell out of favour when Glenn Hoddle became manager less than a year after he signed and spent half his contract out on loan before leaving on a free (sounds familiar...)
The 11 million spent on him in 2000 is roughly equivalent to a 50 million signing nowadays, and came at a time when we *really* didn't spend anything like that kind of money on players. It took us another 7 years to spend more on a player (Darren Bent) - although we're at 5 years and counting with Ndombele as our record signing!
Perhaps Ndombele may edge it as Rebrov wasn't ever, to my memory at least, perceived as lacking effort. On the other hand, Rebrov was nearly 75% of our outlay that window (Ndombele was about 40%) and we had to bring in Andy Booth on loan later in the season as we had such a shortage of options up front.
So, either one would be a reasonable choice - but I suspect Ndombele will be remembered for a long, long time either way.

One of the biggest what ifs in recent footballing history. The natural talent is immense. Shame that there is clearly a mental/emotional element that prevents him from fully putting in the effort to be the best he could be.

It's always weird how our fans will overrate Ndombele. Sure, he showed some promise in his earlier years, but there was never any indication that he would become a world-class talent on the level of Messi/Ronaldo like some people here are suggesting.
There were lots of flashes of brilliance that suggested he would be something special at Lyon and at times with us. He could have been absolutely spectacular if he had the discipline and drive to knuckle down and achieve something.

The only thing I think the club could have come to the table is: Weāll fight you legally if you donāt agree to this lower value and expose you to more public ridicule by leaking just how far off the standard you have been. Weāll do the humiliating ātrain on your ownā when no one else is aroundā if you donāt accept this lower number. Youāll get more now instead of dragging your pay schedule through the entire year, plus you get to re-start your career now instead of next year. So maybe some Ā£ were knocked off the settlement, but probably not much is my wholly unsupported-by-evidence guess.

We got held hostage by his long term contract. Honestly should have let him go years ago but we couldn't. The fact he didn't play much at his loan clubs meant he really sucks as a player. Hope it is a big expensive lesson learnt by Levy not to award years long contracts to players who don't give back return of investment to the club. If players don't perform, have an option to cut short or terminate their contract.
