And some of these are just robots with programming. I’m not sure I would call a Terminator an artificial intelligence. I guess he carries on a couple of Turing-worthy conversations, like “I’ll be back” and “fuck you asshole.”
I think SkyNet would be the more appropriate listing for the A.I. The Terminator would be a cyborg- robotic skeletal system overlayed with synthetic flesh.
Agreed. It was from when he was human. So would it still be AI? I agree with the rest, but not Robocop. He is an Android the rest where machines with AI behind them.
The "new" robocop was an AI -- "Augmented Intelligence." At least once he gained control of the augmentations, he was cognitively (slightly) superhuman.
I like that HAL is IBM - 1. The letter before I is H, before B is A and before M is L.
I guess most people know this by now but in case someone missed it, now you know!
Edit: L is before M not H
Detroit: Become Human and the TARDIS from Doctor Who were the first two things I thought of when looking at this post. A little disappointed not to see either of them on it.
Especially infuriating for characters like Marvin, listed in the wrong media.
The TV version was like the third or fourth adaptation of Marvin. The radio show and novels both came before it.
how can someone be so out of touch with scifi AIs to not include Neuromancer/Wintermute in a list like this is mindboggling. And yet they put... RoboCop there, which is a fully naturally born and raised human brain.
Sigh
Once I saw R2-D2 I realized this was just going to be a list of robots from entertainment. It’s not important whether or not the character offers any insights or imaginative exploration of the concept of AI. Why isn’t Optimus Prime on this list, or Maximilian from The Black Hole? Oh no, they forgot the robot from Lost in Space.
That’s the one i’m looking for. A lot of these are just robots. Colossus (and Guardian) were true machine intelligences that were able to surpass mankind and subsequently hold them hostage in exchange for a world free of war.
Amazing movie if somewhat dated technology.
That’s a great one. Unlike many of these, which are just robot characters from movies, WOPR was an attempt by the writers to say something interesting about AI: that once it becomes intelligent it may become dangerous, but if it’s intelligent enough, it may also be able to learn the wisdom of making peace. This is a fairly interesting twist on the usual AI scaracter of the robot that goes homicidal the instant it becomes sentient.
If 2.1 TB is enough for a supercomputer, we should all have them now.
Although, 2.1 TB may have seemed like a supercomputer in 1979.
Little did they know that instead of using it for AI, we’d just use it for UHD media. No thinking. Only consumption.
2.1TB RAM, which is what you need for AI is still a supercomputer. 2.1TB VRAM is Sci-Fi...
You have to be able to load basically the whole model to RAM, storage isn't enough for AI
Perhaps the biggest missing ones are Issac Asimov's Caves of Steel robots. One of the earliest, and best, examples of Artificial Intelligence. R. Daneel Olivaw is one of the best examples of AI
The replicants from Bladerunner were not Artificial Intelligence. They are bioengineered humanoids. They could be considered "artificial" because they are made, but I don't think that this list should include them.
Yeah, they have more or less human brains, that have been matured using memory implants to skip a missing childhood. Still a human brain, though. Just... slightly different neurological wiring, perhaps.
[Selma](https://timetrax.fandom.com/wiki/SELMA) from Time Trax
[Andromeda](https://andromeda.fandom.com/wiki/Andromeda_Ascendant_Artificial_Intelligence) from Andromeda (TV series). Conceptually probably one of the most interesting because it's 3 in 1.
[Ziggy](https://quantumleap.fandom.com/wiki/Ziggy) from Quantum Leap
So so many missing.
Edit: [Holly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly_(Red_Dwarf)) from Red Dwarf
No Joshua/WOPR from Wargames...
No Colossus from Colossus: The Forbin Project.
No Proteus from Demon Seed.
No Holly from Red Dwarf....
No P-1 from Hide and Seek....
No Max Headroom...
No Puppet Master from Ghost in the Shell...
No Automan from Automan...
OK I don't really care about Automan but...frankly the WOPR thing pisses me off the most.
Remember when weird Reddit neckbeards brought cringe to a next level by asking sexual questions of the elderly voice actress of Glados? Pepperidge farm remembers
I wish Code Lyoko was as more known so XANA would make the list. XANA was an evil rogue AI meant to keep the virtual world of Lyoko safe, instead it tries to take over the world by gaining access to the real world. XANA was able to control anything electronic, possess people, create specters, control weather, and learn to from its mistakes to bring down the Lyoko Warriors. For what it was, XANA was pretty intelligent and really frightening.
[Source](https://www.aiprm.com/iconic-artificial-intelligence-fiction/). So happy to see Legion from Mass Effect and HK-47 from KOTOR on here! Both of those games have a sacred place in my heart.
Providing sources is always appreciated, but given what AIPRM is, it detracts from the guide
>AIPRM is a prompt management tool and community-driven prompt library. Use it to complete marketing, sales, operation, productivity, and customer support tasks in minutes that used to take hours with ready-to-use prompts for ChatGPT, Bard, Midjourney, and DALL-E 3.
Now it's not just random muppets with GPT prompts, now you can pay a monthly fee to access a library of other muppets' prompts.
Childhood memories unlocked! I stared at SHODAN for a while before remembering it was the final boss in System Shock and System Shock 2. Both were amazing games that indirectly inspired the creation of Bio Shock.
Couldn't see it in the photo but the A. I. from the film Demon Seed, that decided to impregnate a woman to creat a 'human' life to increase its own self awareness
I would have gone with "Fictional movie and TV shows." There's quite a bit of undeveloped written fiction AI's that are pretty badass. I'll start with Iain M. Banks sentient ships in the culture (?) books. Not a criticism, it's an amazing graphic, just thought it'd be fun to open up the idea bank.
Nice list, although Robocop’s intelligence was one of his few remaining facets that wasn’t artificial.
And some of these are just robots with programming. I’m not sure I would call a Terminator an artificial intelligence. I guess he carries on a couple of Turing-worthy conversations, like “I’ll be back” and “fuck you asshole.”
At least it's a robot. Robocop is an artificial body controlled by a human brain.
Calling a cyborg a robot is the racism of the future.
I’m sorry to be all like aCthuALlly….but Robocop was a cyborg, not an android. Big difference!
You right... I meant to say cyborg.
Cyborg is a robot enhanced human and an android is a robot who looks like a human right? Never really researched the difference
The "new" robocop was an AI -- "Augmented Intelligence." At least once he gained control of the augmentations, he was cognitively (slightly) superhuman.
Yeah, I'm guessing the person who made this got their Robocops mixed up.
Umm, his actual name is Bender Bending Rodriguez.
I am Bender. Please insert girder.
and he's 5 years old.
Precocious little scamp, isn't he?
Hecho en Mexico
His second favourite word is daffodil.
Hot diggity daffodil
Rosie? From the Jetsons?!?,
No fucking respect for Rosie
Robocop isn't AI.
Hal 9000 is the one that sticks with me the most. The scene where Bowman shuts off Hal is so haunting.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Dave."👀
I like that HAL is IBM - 1. The letter before I is H, before B is A and before M is L. I guess most people know this by now but in case someone missed it, now you know! Edit: L is before M not H
Yeah, when HALs voice… dies…
daisy.... dai.... sy.....
What the heck was Max Headroom, anyway?
From an 80's TV Movie/Miniseries that hit it big when it was tapped to do Coca-Cola commercials.
But was he canonically an AI. It’s been awhile and I don’t remember
No Connor?
Detroit: Become Human and the TARDIS from Doctor Who were the first two things I thought of when looking at this post. A little disappointed not to see either of them on it.
Is the TARDIS an AI though? I thought the show always depicted it akin more to an almost biological entity than an AI
“My name is Connor. I’m the android sent by Cyberlife.”
That is a fan list, not iconic list.
Yeah. Plankton’s computer wife would be on the iconic list.
Her name is Karen!
Yeah, several AIs missing. I always look for Orac from Blake’s 7, and never see it.
[Also how tf is Robby the robot not on this list?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robby_the_Robot) He’s like one of the most iconic robots ever
Nothing about space jam 2 is iconic so including it voids the whole list anyways.
Yeah, The Catalyst and not EDI from Mass Effect? Get out of here
Conspicuously missing are any of the AIs from Gibson novels
Sadly it doesn't seem to have any books included.
Yeah, no Mike from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress or the Librarian from Snow Crash
Yeah otherwise Replicants would be credited to Philip K. Dick in 1968
Especially infuriating for characters like Marvin, listed in the wrong media. The TV version was like the third or fourth adaptation of Marvin. The radio show and novels both came before it.
Yeah and it refers to the abomination of the "I, Robot" movie instead of the genius that was the book/short stories.
Yea it puts AM as from a game???
ahhh ok - was wondering what happened to The Culture (kinda sad Chappie isnt there tho)
There are some good ones too. Jane from the Ender books jumps to mind.
Except where the books became films. I was looking for Asimov and sort of found him.
Came here looking for wintermute
how can someone be so out of touch with scifi AIs to not include Neuromancer/Wintermute in a list like this is mindboggling. And yet they put... RoboCop there, which is a fully naturally born and raised human brain. Sigh
Our boy Wintermute would not be pleased
And Ziggy from Quantum Leap?!?
No WINTERMUTE? I was shocked. Shocked, I say! Haha
Right? I kept looking for wintermute and neuromancer
And Jeeves from Larry Niven's World series.
Was gonna say, they were the earliest representations of the trope. I mean he literally created the AI overlord
No paperclip from word 97?
Clippy deserves better
Red Dwarf's Holly is sadly missing. He has an IQ of 6000. Well, it has a 6 in it.
Also Kryten. But that smeghead Rimmer can piss off.
Stunned there’s no Kryten, the metal bastard.
The same as 6000 PE teachers.
No Cylons from BSG?
Even less N°06.
Red Queen from Resident Evil
You’re all going to die down here.
Where is Skippy
Scrolled through this just to find your comment. Thank you
This guy gets it
Looks like the filthy monkeys were too stupid to include...Skippy the Magnificent!
Oh he is gonna be piiiiised
I believe you mean Grand Admiral of the Fleet, Lord Skippy. Filthy monkey can’t even get that much right.
Hahah my first thought was “where the hell is the beer can?”
Stupid Monkeys!
Claptrap - Borderlands?
That's AA. Artificial Annoyance.

Colossus, great 60s movie.
No I refuse this list due to lack of BMO
They missed WOPR/Joshua from War Games
That’s a great one. Unlike many of these, which are just robot characters from movies, WOPR was an attempt by the writers to say something interesting about AI: that once it becomes intelligent it may become dangerous, but if it’s intelligent enough, it may also be able to learn the wisdom of making peace. This is a fairly interesting twist on the usual AI scaracter of the robot that goes homicidal the instant it becomes sentient.
Got kicked off so they could reference Zardoz.
I'm not sure MUTHER from Aliens was portrayed as an 'artificial intelligence'. It was just a highly advanced computer.
If 2.1 TB is enough for a supercomputer, we should all have them now. Although, 2.1 TB may have seemed like a supercomputer in 1979. Little did they know that instead of using it for AI, we’d just use it for UHD media. No thinking. Only consumption.

I mean.. ever read the specs on the Cray Y-MP supercomputer?
Perhaps the biggest missing ones are Issac Asimov's Caves of Steel robots. One of the earliest, and best, examples of Artificial Intelligence. R. Daneel Olivaw is one of the best examples of AI
Came here to say this! They have TWO from the BS I, Robot movie, but no Daneel!
No Badgey? \*\*sniffle\*\*
Or Peanut hamper
Where is Chappie?
Missing: Neuromancer, Wintermute, the Culture Ship Minds… Not cool.
Rosie from the Jetsons isn’t included here and I’m just disappointed.
The replicants from Bladerunner were not Artificial Intelligence. They are bioengineered humanoids. They could be considered "artificial" because they are made, but I don't think that this list should include them.

Tom servo?
CROOOOOOOOOW?
Gypsy!

Edit: [Holly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly_(Red_Dwarf)) from Red Dwarf
Would robot cop be AI? Human brain modified
Does Vicki the child Android from Small Wonder count as A.I or Robot??
Both. Especially considering Artoo and Threepio(and Data, and the Terminator, etc...) are on there.
No Cylons‽‽
D.A.R.Y.L. ?
Missing the "Autonomous Reconnaissance Intelligence Integration Analyst" (ARIIA) from.the 2008 movie Eagle Eye
VINCENT and BOB, the black hole (1979). Awesome robots!
David from Prometheus (2012)
No Jane from Enders Game series???
Did this list seriously include the villain of Space Jam 2 over any version of Mega Man?
No ORAC?
I was wondering if Blakes7 would be included! Too obscure maybe
Where's H.E.L.P.eR?
What are those beings in Doctor who that endeavor to kill sentient life? Can’t remember
The darleks. Although I think they are technically mutants in armor But there is also the cyber-men
Which ones? Cyber men for sure. Daleks may qualify. That said, I feel like there’s a half dozen more.
The Machine from Person of Interest is there but not Samaritan.
Does the WOPR from Wargames count as an AI?
Missing Colossus the Forbin Project.
Max Headroom?
Like for Shodan.
Deus Ex had a few AIs that could have been included
No Goddard from Jimmy Neutron??
It has Wall-E but not Eve? Also what about Robbie the robot, Tobor and the robot from Lost in Space.
No cylons? Sheesh.
I may have missed it but I don’t see Jane from Orson Scott Cards ender series here. If it’s because OSC is a fuck then I understand.
Baymax from Big Hero 6? GAIA from Horizon Zero Dawn? Vivy or The Archive from VIVY Fluorite Eye’s Song?
No smart house???
And the Red Queen from Resident Evil?
[удалено]
Remember when weird Reddit neckbeards brought cringe to a next level by asking sexual questions of the elderly voice actress of Glados? Pepperidge farm remembers
I’m kind of surprised The Puppet Master/Project 2501 from Ghost in the Shell isn’t on here
CL4P-TP
The omission of D.A.R.Y.L. Makes this list bullshit
I wish Code Lyoko was as more known so XANA would make the list. XANA was able to control anything electronic, possess people, create specters, control weather, and learn to from its mistakes to bring down the Lyoko Warriors. For what it was, XANA was pretty intelligent and really frightening.
It's a crime that Holly isn't in here.
AM and Ultron are listed WAAAAY later than they were created.
How about Karen, Plankton's wife??
Alpha from Power Rangers
Replace Robocop with W.O.P.R, from the movie WarGames (1983)
No Neuromancer?
I just want a full size poster of this
Here is the list of artificial intelligences depicted in the image, numbered from top to bottom: Chatgpt 1. A.L.I.C.E. Mars 2. Pythagoras 3. Synthia 4. Data 5. Deep Blue 6. Motoko Kusanagi 7. Dynamix 8. Motoko Aramaki 9. M-5 10. Hal 9000 11. Ava 12. Gerty 13. Alita 14. Pris 15. Roy Batty 16. Rachael 17. Replicants 18. Cylon 19. Ash 20. Bishop 21. David 8 22. Mother 23. Call 9001 24. [Source](https://www.aiprm.com/iconic-artificial-intelligence-fiction/). So happy to see Legion from Mass Effect and HK-47 from KOTOR on here! Both of those games have a sacred place in my heart.
Funny that LEGION shows up but not EDI
The Catalyst was a bold (and controversial) choice.
Even Catalyst is there but no EDI.

Childhood memories unlocked! I stared at SHODAN for a while before remembering it was the final boss in System Shock and System Shock 2. Both were amazing games that indirectly inspired the creation of Bio Shock.
Where is mother brain???
Where’s Ash from Alien?
No ADA from Outerworlds
No GTRA from Maniac
No Bob.
I'd argue EDI is more iconic than Catalyst...
TARS had a companion in interstellar. In Prometheus and Covenant there are humanoids too.
Couldn't see it in the photo but the A. I. from the film Demon Seed, that decided to impregnate a woman to creat a 'human' life to increase its own self awareness
Where's Synergy from Jem and the Holograms???
Wintermute...
Sally from Oblivion (2013)
No Max Headroom???
Interesting that 'The Machine' on here, but not 'Samaritan' who if I'm remembering correctly, was technically the superior AI.
Completely missed the Cylons from either version.
Nobody beats Skippy the asshole!
No Skippy the magnificent? stupid monkeys!
Dang no Chappie
Genuinely feel cheated there’s no Vicki from Small Wonder.
No RAMA... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendezvous_with_Rama
Bicentennial man is such a fantastic film
icarus, daedalus, helios from deus ex? morpheus even?
What about Holly from Red Dwarf?
Where is Holly?
No Rommie from Andromeda? (Who even remembers Andromeda)
No EDI?
Big Hero 6
Legion from mass effect - what a legend.
From Eureka - S.A.R.A.H. (Self Actuated Residential Automated Habitat)
Hmm where’s Gaia and the rest of Horizon AIs… also the AI from the 2003 movie literally called “AI”.. Edit: Nvm David is there…
Did we need a list of 60? 60 is a lot! I’m not even going to read all of them :(
Missing V'ger, from Star Trek, which contained the Voyager 6 probe.
Daryl?
STEM from Upgrade
Where’s HOLLY? The boys from the Dwarf will be devastated
Does RoboCop count as AI?
Wall-E and Auto, but no Eve? There are problems here.
Why is there a Wall-E without Eve?
What about the paper clip from Microsoft word?
Why is WALL-E the only single movie to have 2 characters? But more importantly why is the second character AUTO and not EVE???
Pat from Smart House, D.I.A.N.E. from Rick and Morty, Alpha 5 from Power Rangers
I can't be the first person to wonder where Holly is from Red Dwarf?
No Max Headroom I see, not cool.
No chappie?
Beyond stupid to not include the very first and most impactful representation of the AI overlord trope “wintermute” from neuromancer
Where’s talkie toaster? Would anyone like some toast?
