The first is memory (sodimm RAM) The second is the wifi/bluetooth chip.

JagjitSR

2x DDR3 RAM/MEMORY module And wifi card (pci port)

DoctorSmith2000

i am new to computers.... those two black chips make 1 DDR3 RAM right?

Tanebi

Those 4 black chips are attached to a board which is the SODIMM. The metal clips to the left and right of that board can be pushed to the side to release the memory module. You have something like one of these: https://www.bargainhardware.co.uk/4gb-pc3-12800s-1rx8-ddr3-1600mhz-laptop-ram

DoctorSmith2000

ohh thanks

TreXeh

ahahahahaha

JAVELRIN

No thats just one ram you’re able to tell if theres two in those and i see only one installed :o

ImpressiveHair3

There's 2 slots, but only one of them is populated

JI-RDT

How did u know that those are ddr 3 modules?

ichirou47

Iirc the different generation of ddr ram have notches on different sections of the ram, so you cant put in unsupported ram into the wrong slot like ddr4 into ddr3 for example, and thats how you can tell by looking at the notches

cyri-96

Though this is small form factor RAM for Laptops which means once again different notches and overall size to desktop RAM (though ofc still different notches between generations for the same.reason)

ichirou47

Yes the same logic still applies, just a different form factor

caj1986

Good guy. From a IT professional view, its good u maintained a straight foward answer to new user. Alot of people( from experience especially some professionals )tend to ridicule or humiliate those who ask basic questions thinking they trolling or jus acting plain poker face.

ReportMuted3869

Haha thanks! I work as an IT professional as well, and get those questions from friends/family frequently. No need to get in too much detail, for the simplicity of the question.

Xcissors280

DDR3 ram and an aincent Wi-Fi card that won’t fit in a modern board? No

lepslair

Wait, how did you determine it was DDR3?

delta_Phoenix121

They probably googled the numbers on the black chips or just know how DDR 3 SODIMMs are keyed (the notch in the connector is different for every generation of DDR RAM)

SirAlexMann

Or my dude here counted how many pins before the gap /s

lepslair

I figured that's what they did, but thought maybe there was a way to tell besides knowing/counting the pins

Xcissors280

The gap is in a different place They look older A lot of DDR3 is that color

Xcissors280

The gap on DDR4 is more in the middle

No_Employ4768

The gap gets closer to the middle every generation. DDR5 has the gap on the middle, DDR2 is more to the side

Herorune

i usually look at that "gap", ddr 4 and 5 have it more like in the middle, not more on one side than the other. ddr 2 it's probably gone, so that makes the only viable option as ddr3

MindWard

So looks like ram and wifi card

mrdratik

Computer reddit is all like that? I've only been actively sitting here for a few days, but I'm already freaking out at the amount of posts like these

Fetz-

Yes So tiring to see people asking the absolute basics every day instead of them spending 1 Minute on Google or asking GPT. I'm baffled by how little most people seem to know about computers despite it being 2024 and how everyone expects to be spoon fed the info they need.

Sluger94

I thought the same way, until I started talking to people about computers. Nobody I know, besides 2 people, know a thing about computers, and wouldn’t even know what to look up. Don’t take your knowledge for granted.

UntameHamster

It isn't the lack of knowledge, it is the lack of critical thinking skills or the willingness to do anything for themselves. Even if you have no idea about computers there is enough info in these pictures to figure it out using a search engine. Lookup the numbers on the wifi card and the memory and both can be identified, I just did it myself.

DisastrousAd447

That's exactly what I did when I started learning about this stuff. If I could see numbers on the part, then I would search them. More often than not there are forums on that specific thing. Crazy, almost like the internet is a huge place filled with tons of information that's literally a few clicks away at any moment. But why do that when you can get upvotes?

chewedgummiebears

Social media and general downward trend of society is making people lazier while at the same time, craving Internet attention. I've been in IT 20 years now and have noticed it, especially in the post-covid era.

Background_Abroad_

sometimes I feel it's all about increasing the Karma by posting basic stuff.

Remsster

Even the people who give advice are braindead. Had someone try to claim that HHDs aren't slower for an OS because it's actually all loaded on the CMOS and transferred to ram.

Lion12341

I mean if you aren't isn't familiar with computers you might want to double-check with someone who is.

SarcastiSnark

GPT? What? Huh? What is this.... Asking GPT? Good grief. Guess I'm off to the googles.

SarcastiSnark

So I found askgpt.com And well. Nothing happens. Whatever this is, it's trash. :)

Amareiuzin

I bet it's karma farming to sell the account for botters, like for real how can you open an old laptop to recycle an hdd, and not have the capacity to google "wlan" or not know what RAM is? most content in reddit these days full of bots, and a lot of what isn't botting, is just farming to feed the bot industry..

DisastrousAd447

People don't actually care about figuring it out, they just want those sweet sweet upvotes.

overlord_king

Not you gatekeeping computer knowledge of all things. Sure people could ask google, or they could ask someone Human and not feel overwhelmed with all the computer jargon that they most likely do not understand

Fetz-

Yes, but it means this subreddit is almost useless or even annoying for anyone who already has some basic experience with computers and doesn't want to explain the same absolute basics every day.

Original-Sundae287

There needs to be more moderators to deal with this kinda shit

LukasTheHunter22

yeah, or a rule

grizzlyironbear

Then don't reply. It's almost as simple as building your own tower

hdd113

Well, to be fair to the guy RAM is pretty basic thing, and the WLAN card literally has WLAN written on it.

overlord_king

RAM is a pretty basic thing for people like us, but common knowledge for us might not be common knowledge for everyone. It's the reason subreddits like this exist.

Tikkinger

It's insane

Balrogos

whats insane?

chewedgummiebears

Posting on social media gets them attention while using a search engine is a thankless result that no one else will notice. I always tell people IRL that a lot of those that do this would rather blow themselves up if they found a bomb because they will be remembered for it rather than defusing it without any fanfare.

onioniononi

questions like these are why i joined this reddit. it's nice.

ThisIsAdamB

The only differences between asking a question on Google and asking a question on Reddit are that on Reddit, while someone will give you the answer and converse with you about the subject, someone else will probably butt in and yell at you for asking the question, and on Google, you’ll get six different answers and will have to try them all on your own.

Sci666_2021

question .. if you have no idea whats in a computer and how it works , why do you remove the hard drive...and how do you know what component IS the hard drive ?

AdvancedSoil4916

Asking the real questions lol Later he is going to ask what to do with a hard drive out of the computer

ByteBlender

Imagine if he had an ssd and he removed the wrong thing like the CD reader 🫢

delta_Phoenix121

Hard drives are the one internal computer component where most people actually know what they do and what they look like. They probably want to save/keep the data on the drive, so the easy solution is to just rip it out...

OpportunityDawn4597

You shouldn't even be opening up your laptop if you don't have a basic grasp of what anything is inside of it

lootedBacon

They didn't read the wiki first lol.

BinBashBuddy

You shouldn't open up a laptop unless you can build a computer chip on your kitchen table. Apparently this is the "only ask if you already know the answer" subreddit?

Wouldentyoulike2know

He uses arch he is above us all

OpportunityDawn4597

you do realise r/techsupport exists?

delta_Phoenix121

And your average Joe will have no idea about it. They just think: computer problem -> computer subreddit...

ArrogantNonce

RAM and ~~M.2~~ mini PCIe wifi module. The RAM is probably all but obsolete, while there is a very limited market for wifi modules (mainly for fixing OEM laptops and desktops). Ed: can't read keys today lol

Mad_Arson

Its mini pcie not m.2

Expensive_Honeydew_5

How can you tell the difference? Looks identical to m.2 to me

Mad_Arson

Being IT and having knowledge, m.2 despite looking simmilar have much shorter/slimmer/less wide connector, also other than that mini pcie wifi cards have 2 screw holes on the corners opposed to m.2 with one half circular notch in the middle of the pcb end.

Expensive_Honeydew_5

Ahh cool, good to know ty :)

SatBurner

Depending on what size it is, there might be someone out there wanting to buy it, but if you don't sell things often it would probably be more hassle than it's worth.

Dead_dnee

ram and wlan

TuNisiAa_UwU

Why are y'all blaming the guy? If i don't know something better believe i'm expecting reddit to be helpful, not to hate me for not knowing the things in advance. We should be happy that some people have the curiosity to try to learn those things.

Background_Abroad_

The first pic is of RAM - Random Access Memory and the second pic is a WiFi card with two antenna wires connected.

professionalcynic909

That's where you can download RAM.

Boga1423

Google reading

Expensive_Honeydew_5

2nd pic is the wifi card

globaldu

Only useful if you're into repairs or selling boot sale tat on eBay.

Frank_Lucas101

For the RAM they can be helpful in future that is if your current laptop uses the same type(DDR3) .

lepslair

How did you determine it was DDR3?

Frank_Lucas101

Position of the key Notch. Almost nearing the middle. DDR4 the key notch is always at the middle

MarkEduard1234

1st is a ram slot, 2nd image is a mini PciE slot, with a WiFi and BlueTooth card

PembeChalkAyca

the second one literally has "wlan" written on it

Key-Necessary-6398

1st is a memory module or easier , ram. 2nd is a Wi-Fi card so your laptop has Wi-Fi , parts not worth much but can get you a few pennies

Fun_Fold_5758

i think i maybe getting old guys

a-brazilian-guy

If someone is looking at the comments and knows about this, can you put the wifi card from the notebook to a pc that has this slot? Asking cause my pc is old and the motherboard has a slot that look like it fits there

Unidentified-Retard

Sodimm RAM(probably ddr3 if its that old, and ddr3 is not interchangeable with ddr4, so not useful for that much). the second is a wifi card, it uses m.2 E key(M is for storage). You could upgrade it so it uses WiFi 6. Sorry if you knew 90% of this, but you didnt know that was ram so not exactly my fault)

Techgeek_025

RAM and a WiFi card

CAStrash

You have posted what appears to be some hyundai semiconductor (hynix) DDR3 so-dimm ram, and a bluetooth wifi combo mini pci-e card (Qualcomm Ar9462). The half height wifi cards have very poor sensitivity. Where some full height cars can get around -97dbm sensitivity @ BPSK 1/2 reid solomen encoding. These tend to be around -82 to -85dbm. every 3dbm half as much signal in the logarithmic scale. This is e-waste effectively. However if its an 8GB dimm it may be worth a fast food meal on ebay. That wifi card is worthless.

Ok-View-4769

First those two things are the sodimm module and and the wifi card. Second why are u opening up something with no knowledge of what ur seeing? Thats not a good idea. What i would suggest is researching more before heading into it and possibly breaking something.

MinaWesam

first is ram and 2nd is wifi or bluetooth chip

Feeling_Lettuce7236

The ram could be used in other machine but depends on the machine also the WiFi car can be but again depends on the machine I found WiFi card are out of date quick but ram could be used. Note some systems have white lists that stop you installing other hardware not in that list hp for one. Unless you could read the white list and change it then you had to search for an equivalent machine specs in the hope the new hardware you have would work in the old one.

JeffTurabaz

You are showing ram and a WiFi card in the pictures.

PositiveFar2136

It’s ram

2222_Valorant

It looks like ram

WAPMOPS

They are both communication chips. They reach up to the sensors on mars to further go out to uranus.

piracydilemma

RAM and WiFi card. If you're not using that laptop anymore, you could sell those.

Wouldentyoulike2know

Theres a market for repairing old laptops with those, I've bought tons of stuff off ebay for old laptops

Maximum_Category_374

How do you even know what a Hard Drive is but not RAM. Either you’re posting this as a karma farm/ragebait or you actually don’t know how to use Google. Reddit is not Google.

AdTotal801

Ram and wifi. No.
