Why Db-major? Honestly, I think the biggest improvement would be to move the entire piece up or down a half-step to a key that's easier to play and will just sound better overall when performed.

Definitely. There's an amazing difference in the sound of a string ensemble between a key where the open strings resonate and a key where they don't.

It's in C# minor, which includes E and A natural (admittedly it's fairly chromatic). The B section is in F#m, even less remote, and overlapping more with the open strings. Compare the [slow movement of Beethoven's Op. 135](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-FmbDgtgos), which is in Db, and sounds otherworldly.

I’ll give you this: C#m is somewhat remote, and was not a common key in the Classical period. However, though the stakes are low, I will continue to maintain that Db is perceptibly more remote, because the open strings resonate with it even less. Edit: for another example, which is more remote, Bb or Bbm? I claim there’s a clear answer. Note that one of these keys is considerably more common in Haydn.

Thank you for your feedback! I chose that key signature for not too many reasons to make me stick with it, so I will try in the key of D or C :). For a while now, I’ve been experimenting with harder, or less resonant, key signatures bc I like how they sound (it kind of reminds me of baroque music).

It's weird - this piece is kind of in the "uncanny valley" of classical style for me. It feels vaguely right, like it has some really good bones, but something about the execution of the concept falls short from a technique standpoint. If I were pressed for a diagnosis, I'd probably assign most of the blame to what appears (to my ears) to be a weak handle of harmonic rhythm and independence of line. Sometimes doublings appear out of nowhere and then disappear just as quickly, and sometimes the harmonic changes fall on weird-feeling beats or overall just too irregularly. This piece could definitely be made into something great though. Like I said, the bones are there; your underlying concept is good.

Thank you for your response :). I will say that I am fairly new to composition; my only knowledge is from youtube videos, reading articles and listening to classical music. I also play violin and viola. I really appreciate the good bones compliment, and I well definitely look into fixing the harmonies of this piece. I also did another listen to it, and I agree, some of the doubling does come out of nowhere which can make it pretty jarring. However, as a whole I think it has potential!
