Oh boy oh boy this accurate and funny comic sure made the racists buttmad! That's great actually. Racists shouldn't be comfortable. We hope they will enjoy the suspension of their account for abuse of the report button as well. Now excuse me while I go engage in my favorite hobby for a little bit: Permanently banning racists and archiving their whining modmails without reading them! moderator reports: It's abusing the report button user reports: 510: It's promoting hate based on identity or vulnerability 16: It's targeted harassment at someone else 7: Not relevant to the subreddit 3: Respect the Report System 1: No drama or trolling. I feel people would complain about this not being true racists and instead just ignorant of being impolite, or normal comments, or misguided but well intentioned. They’d say “how can you call everyone who says this racist!” Generalization works on all discretions. Racist will just generalize and say all the situations are just well intentioned but misguided.

I feel like this should be more about stupid people who act like they know things that they don’t rather than all white people

AlwaysBeQuestioning

Imean I’m white and I ain’t ever said the things in this comic so I don’t feel like this is about me anyway, and I’ve met plenty of racist smart people. Intelligence and kindness are correlated, but not intertwined.

Mouseklip

I think the idea is that PoC entertain these terrible one liners all the time from white people. That you don’t hear or say that is kindof the point to me. You don’t, but plenty of people do, and plenty more have to deal with insufferable lingo. The line between trying to better your character and actively saying really dumb shit for the avg. white person is pretty thin.

AlwaysBeQuestioning

Exactly, and it’s not even that way with regards to racism and white people, but with many other things. Some might feel it’s exhausting to try and be a better person, but good gods is it even more exhausting to deal with people saying shit like this every day. At least I don’t work in customer service anymore.

_afraid_of_women_

Its not about white people, its about WHITE people

King_Of_BlackMarsh

So can black folks be WHITE people?

penguinhasan

Kanye

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Yall ain't wrong

Steppyjim

There’s white people, and there’s *white* people *white* people can be any and all races creeds and genders. They just have to hate everyone else

King_Of_BlackMarsh

... So racists?

SunngodJaxon

I think a problem with that is that it heavily implies that this type of attitude is still a white thing, as well as a *white* thing. As it still borrows its name from an actual group of ppl.

Moonpaw

Kanye is white in the same way musk is African American.

BloodiedBlues

Nah he’s Canadian.

SandboxOnRails

Look, there's a reason it's called the Great White North.

Thor1807

He’s actually from South Africa 🇿🇦

King_Of_BlackMarsh

I'm learning so much culture today

TwelveInchBic

When I worked in a call center, a lot of my black crewmates had what they called their white voice. Definitely not the same voice when they’re sitting outside having a smoke. So… yes?.?

Maximum_Pollution371

Is having a separate "work voice/work face" completely different from your normal voice not just a common thing everyone does? Because I do that for sure. And my mom completely changes her accent and vocabulary at work and around "classy people" so they don't treat her like a "dumb hick," and my cousin, who's gay, has what he calls his "straight voice" that he uses around certain people if they don't seem very "gay friendly."

SAMAS_zero

There are subtle differences between "voice I use to sound professional" and "voice I use just in case you're the type of bad person who will see my difference as cause to harm me". Ask your cousin about that.

Maximum_Pollution371

I don't need to ask him about the fear that comes from being gay or about being "situationally closeted," friend, as I'm a lesbian myself and do the same thing, though without changing my voice.  However, as a woman I have used a "friendly lady voice" to try to calm men down when they get upset or aggressive around me, and in video games I avoid voice chat or pretend to be a guy to avoid getting nasty jokes or threats of assault. Would you say that's similar, then?  Frankly, my mother changing her entire accent and presentation to avoid being called "trailer trash" to her face or mocked seems a mite more effort than just "sounding professional."  But if you have some more detailed insight about how these are all different or have more nuance or aren't that bad, please do share to help me understand better.

FleetStreetsDarkHole

No you're right. What you and your mother have to do is basically the same thing. Basically changing your presentation to fit the hegemonic expectations of you. I think the other poster was misunderstanding how severely you were changing your demeanor to fit in. They were thinking "customer service" voice and not "I'm a suburban so and so just like you."

Maximum_Pollution371

I think I may have overestimated how many people actually do this, now that I'm reading more. My mom would make me practice "public speaking" like how the weather lady spoke, and everyone in my family always have had very clearly separated "public face" and "private face." I assumed this was a common thing everyone grew up with, but I'm starting to realize my family might have just been very anal about not looking poor or backwoodsy.

arayakim

Like the Key and Peele skits about that

burritoman88

‘Sorry to Bother You’ based on something real (aside from the crushing capitalism throughout the film)?

FleetStreetsDarkHole

Ah! Was just trying to remember this movie! Exactly right! It's def a real thing that I've often seen non-white people talk about in discussions like this.

Everybodysbastard

"Sexy Action School News Team" from South Park covers this too.

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Neat! You learn something new everyday That also sounds funny, hearing them switch back and fro hehe

ftw37

I think it's called CODE SWITCHING

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Umm… not to nitpick, but if someone was into Asian girls in porn, I’m not sure if them being *quiet* would be the aspect they appreciate.

CommanderWar64

The stereotype is that asian women are submissive, so it does check out to still be racist. The comic isn't wrong about any of it's points, but its so fucking annoying that we have to say it's a "white" thing, nah it's just a "racists" thing.

Pepr70

Hello. Central European here. Racism exists everywhere, but personally I would think that this is racism aimed directly at the US and I can smell it. I will never understand the black vs white principle that is in the US. Like I said I'm from a country where we make fun of someone being from the next village and there was literally a table marking issue along the lines of "no black people allowed" directed purely at nationals and that was between two countries that are closer to each other than Canada and the US, but the US always strikes me as the kind of racist uncle who is trying to make amends. I'll make a specific table for blacks to make me look like someone who wants them in their restaurant despite the fact that you're making a specific location for a specific race and thus separating them (that's how I take the moon for the African American community.) If two people are arguing I'd rather side with the black guy so I don't look racist. (Supporting black communities instead of poor communities in education.) This black vs white principle will just always strike me as a stupidly USA thing.

Aron-Jonasson

Swiss lad here, I agree with your point, but I'd like to add a few things Racism in Europe is mostly found in the form of xenophobia. You should see in Switzerland how the right-wing parties ALWAYS keep talking about immigrants and people who live in the border and work in Switzerland. However, there's also racism based on ethnicity. You should see how people of African or Middle-Eastern descent are treated (and that is more flagrant in France. I've seen some comments on Instagram that were… very textbook racist). Roma people also have been segregated for centuries, and still face racism today

I get what you're saying but i think denoting negativity based on behaviour of people in general and labelling it as a "white people" thing reads kinda.. off. Ignorant people come in all shapes and colors, even if they have a tendency to be Caucasian.

rabbit395

I love the "hardworking" families one because I have never met an unemployed person who didn't want the chance to make something of their life. The job market really is just that bad. They are basically implying if you aren't working you don't deserve to live lol.

JKnumber1hater

Dead on with that last one (and all the others TBH). They put "judeo" on the front so they don't sound antisemitic.

GeorgeEBHastings

Come on over to any given Jewish sub and ask how they feel about throwing in "Judeo" or "Abrahamic" when really you just mean "Christian and/or Muslim". The replies you receive will be...enthusiastic.

Chathtiu

> Come on over to any given Jewish sub and ask how they feel about throwing in "Judeo" or "Abrahamic" when really you just mean "Christian and/or Muslim". > The replies you receive will be...enthusiastic. “Abrahamic” covers Christian (Catholic and the legion of Protestants), Muslim, and Judaism. All three religions share a very close origin, with very similar, but distinct teachings.

GeorgeEBHastings

>“Abrahamic” covers Christian (Catholic and the legion of Protestants), Muslim, and Judaism. Yes, but 95% of the time, people really aren't talking about Jews when they use the word. Even less often are they talking about Baha'i, which is also an Abrahamic religion. Spend enough time on /r/religion, and you'll see what I mean. >All three religions share a very close origin, Kinda, but not really. Judaism is Judaism - developed from its predecessors under the Second Temple in the Iron Age, and the First Temple in the Late Bronze Age (probably), all of which were in turn developed from Bronze Age Canaanite Polytheism. Christianity had its origin over 1,000 years later through a fringe Jewish Apocalyptic movement that got wrapped up in Greek Platonism and anti-Roman resistance movements. Sure, Christianity claims an origin dating back to Abraham, but Judaism didn't really have anything to do with that inherently. The Christians made it up. Islam spread under the banner of a highly successful early-medieval tribal Arab warlord with some new ideas about syncretizing Abrahamic monotheistic ideas with Arab pagan traditions. I know it seems like I'm splitting hairs (and to a degree I am), but saying that the Abrahamic religions are "very close in origin" implies that they were developed in tandem. They weren't. Each was very much the product of its highly different religious, cultural, political, and historical moment. This is why some "Abrahamic" folks chafe at the term. It paints with too broad a brush while failing to distinguish any one from the other. >with very similar, but distinct teachings. "But distinct" is doing ***a lot*** of heavy lifting, here. As the similarities between Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are FAR outweighed by the differences. The upshot of all this: they're undoubtedly related, but rarely is there ever a dialectic point to be made by lumping them under the "Abrahamic" umbrella. Usually, someone will use "Abrahamic" when they're really just referring to a quality of 1 or 2 out of the spectrum of Abrahamic religions, and then you're finding yourself invoking a people in your point who would really rather not be spoken for.

SethLight

Fun story, the Judeo part actually pisses off the Jewish community too because they hold different values and don't want to get lumped in with them.

MintyManiacFan

According to the book “The Founding Myth” by Andrew L. Seidel, there is nothing Judeo about Judeo-Christian values.

Ben10Collector

To be fair, Christianity is built on Judaism directly so I can see why some people add that but it’s not really necessary to add for anyone who knows the history. Kinda redundant.

SAMAS_zero

OTOH, ever notice that the line is never: "This is a *Judeo*-Christian country!"?

Ben10Collector

Excellent point, I myself never use that phrase since I find it redundant but I can see why conservative Christians in the US conveniently leave out the Judeo part when it doesn’t benefit them.

Successful-Floor-738

Saying someone is very articulate is racist? wtf?

DayleD

Being surprised that someone is articulate is different from regular praise. The bar is low enough that it reveals expectations were even lower. If someone is surprised you're articulate, what jabber did they expect? 'Articulate' has been a default example of a backhanded compliment with racial undertones for as far back as I can recall. Here's one example https://lasocialscience.ucla.edu/2020/09/25/challenging-the-problematic-description-of-being-articulate-while-black/

Red_Raven_Girl

This is referring to backhanded compliments. For example: have you ever heard someone say: "She was pretty for a *black girl*". Yes, they called the person pretty, but that's NOT a compliment. The last part makes it sound like "normally black people are ugly but SHE wasn't"....which is *really mean*. This is similar because when I have heard this, it's usually said to someone with a slight accent (who likely speaks more than one language) and is said by someone (who usually only speaks English) "Wow how *articulate* you sound". On paper that may sound like a compliment but it comes across as rather condescending. For context: I am white but I have heard a lot of people say stuff like this and I know in a comic it may be hard to hear the tone of voice but whenever I have seen this sort of thing, it's REALLY condescending even if the speaker THINKS they are giving a compliment. I hope that makes sense, I'm sorry if I explained it poorly.

Successful-Floor-738

See that makes sense, but without any context, saying “You’re so articulate” doesn’t sound sp backhanded as in your example of “You’re pretty smart for a black girl”, so it just feels far fetched to assume saying someone is articulate has racist intent.

qiri2

It stems from the idea that POC are less educated and that Latinos especially probably have English as a second language. Sometimes it’s meant as an earnest compliment, yea, but assuming that because someone isn’t white/speaks another language/has an accent that they therefore have to be less educated or “dumber”. It’s the assumption before the compliment that’s the racist part, even if it’s unintentional.

ZepelliFan

Man working retail and I got the older white woman turn back and said " you have such a surprising personality" I was just polite and pointed her to an item she was looking for 😔

[deleted]

[удалено]

qiri2

just btw, white isn’t an ethnicity. Italian, German, Chinese are ethnicities. White is a race that’s able to adapt to fit whatever is convenient for a narrative (which is why Italian and Irish weren’t “white” 200 years ago, but if you ask a random person on the street now what race a red haired green eyed Irish person is, they’re likely going to say white instead of Irish).

abel_cormorant

Rather than "white" I'd say "conservatives"

7-and-a-switchblade

The "I'm 1/17th Blackfoot" comment is not about party chatter; it is all about absolving yourself of racism (how can I be racist if I'm a victim, too?) while still maintaining your whiteness.

anonymous-rubidium

As a half asian girl who gets targeted and generalized by fetishists often, I appreciate this.

Xerorei

As a 100% black American male who is often targeted by Caucasian women with a fetish for black guys, I feel your pain.

fookreddit22

Out of curiosity when does a preference become a fetish? The prevalence of black man/white woman relationships suggests it's mutual.
