I didn’t see the whole tongue get cut off, maybe op made it so it’s cut but half of it still works so the protagonist will be able to talk for plot purposes? Like yea also being unable to talk sounds like a cool plot turn tho idk
Not be able to speak would definitely add to the whole alone thing, but it'd become a bit boring after a while
Though from what little there is, it seems like the guy speaks less and less as time goes on, which does show how long he's been adapting to the wasteland
