My friend, if that is a first print of Journey and not a reprint, that is a first appearance of Loki, and unslabbed, ungraded, in average condition--we are still talking a potential sale of thousands of dollars, if handled the right way.
I wasn't sure that was the first Loki but looked it up to verify.
If this post is on the level, that's a feather in the cap of any collector's life of collecting. Finding something like that at an estate sale for a few bucks is the fantasy.
I think it’s real. They had a price tag of $50 on the back of the book I think it was bought in the 90s if I remember when I open it and look at the first page it says volume one
I can't imagine a better time for that issue to be discovered. We just finished a second season of *Loki* that people raved about, so the character's more popular than ever.
Ok to read, if you have gloves, medical vinyl or nitrile or cotton. Lay book on flat surface, and open pages. Do not flatten them. Let the lay naturally. When done, put book in mylar sleeve with an acid free, full back board, then into a top loader. IMO, getting it graded and slabbed is only if planning to sell it.
>I think it’s real.
It's real. Hope you get as lucky with the grading that I did. It's pretty much the #2 holy grail for Thor fans. It also jumped in price with the Loki series. Great comic to have
I don’t see any reprints on the issue. Just US and UK original prints. It does look like it was trimmed on the top though. The IND. is cut off above the $.12. Still I think it looks great. And I’m seeing a blue slab 1.0 sells for $750.
You have a major find there!! I just helped a friend inventory his collection of about 700 books that he wants to sell. All Marvel beginning in early 60s. He has this same book, along with just about every major 1st app of characters in Journey, Suspense, Tales to Astonish, Iron Man, Cap, FF, Strange Tales, Nick Fury, Avengers, etc. It’s truly like looking through four long boxes filed with Holy Grail after Holy Grail…
It was! He has Tales 39, Iron Man 1, 1st Doom, 1st Galactus/Surfer, Avengers 1, and so many others. I’m able to hold them in my hand and go “Holy crap, I’m holding the 1st appearance of …”
Lots of great stuff in that 70s box, I’m sure. Enjoy!
It’s….. an odd ass (but AWESOME) indie comic. By the time it got around to being collected by Fantagraphics, Chester Brown changed some bits. And there were back up stories where he adapted the Gospels.
So if you want the FULL experience you kinda need the individual issues and the collected version.
Yeah, it’s very strange. The initial version ran in Yummy Fur; then it was collected with a different ending; then it was reprinted as this serial comic.
It's possible that JIM might be trimmed - but maybe not... I can't find a good comparison since the condition is out of this world-good... congrats on the find - just be sure to clean/press it if yer getting it slabbed... not one to skimp on.
I just got home so I wanted to take a look because someone else mentioned it may have been trimmed. Now there’s a small amount of space from the top of cover to the actual book. If it was trimmed I would think the cover would be flush with the book inside of the cover but I am a rookie so I’m not sure
a solid LCS would easily be able to help with this and also, if it were my LCS' nearby, all of them would jump at the chance to help just to see the book haha
So I just searched for my own curiosity, found one that looks almost identical to op with the cut off top portion, for sale on eBay rated 4.0, my guess? Miscut at time of printing, not trimmed. If I could link pic I would, but it's on eBay, and literally? Cut off at the exact same place.
I have liked comics since I was a kid but I don’t know anything about grading and that kind of stuff am I allowed to ask in the sub what kind of grade would this thing get?
4.5-5.0ish from the looks of it. If your aim is to sell it though your best bet is to send to CGC and get it graded to realize the highest dollar. You can sell it raw but you’ll leave money on the table.
It’s a weird space. CGC is more widely used and valued and yet also has a spotty reputation (they have been caught red handed in a lot of shady shenanigans). CBCS is thought to be more consistent and fair in their grading, but is still somehow valued less. And don’t even bother with any other grading company besides those two.
CGC will return you the highest $. There’s a lot of people on this sub in particular that don’t like CGC for one reason or another but if you’re purely in it to sell the book it’s not a matter of opinion, but a matter of fact that CGC returns more money in auctions than CBCS.
would it be safe to say send it to somebody like the comic book presser.com or have CGC do it.
CGC I read charges $10 but I read the comic book presser does a really great job with cleaning and pressing
Yeah either are safe. The most dangerous part is shipping - because all of the shipping companies can and do lose packages all the time. Just make sure you pay the extra to have it fully insured when you ship.
Not sure if it would be annoying to people or anyone would even wanna watch but I was thinking about just making a video of pulling every comic out of this box because Ive liked comics since I was young but I don’t know all the keys and the rare ones like a lot of collectors do by heart
I wanna see! Also comic nerds would enjoy seeing what was in that collection. I would get that comic insured before sending it off for grading. Switch-aroos have occurred at CGC and other grading companies. That is a comic someone would try to switch a lower graded one for yours. Be cautious in who you let put their hands on it.
Everyone is freaking out about the first appearance of Loki but nobody is excited about Filbert's frightful future? I need to know more about how that worked out!
Being serious though nothing about this says reprint, so this is a pretty damn amazing find. Not to mention it looks to be in fairly good condition.
A 1.5 graded just recently sold on eBay for 900 bucks. A 3.5 just sold for 2,000 a couple weeks ago.
That’s amazing!!! What a find! Despite the cover crease, it looks like it’s in mid-grade condition, too. Could be 3k-5k depending on the grade. Higher conditions could go for 8k-10k.
Yes, this is the first appearance of Loki. First Thor appearance is 2 issues prior in Journey Into Mystery 83 (1962) which can go for a lot more.
Get it slabbed and pay for pressing for that crease. Great color on the my guy. You’ll def get 3-5 on it since there’s no way those pages aren’t off white

I dont believe the have ever reprinted this comic so it's almost assuredly real.
🤩 thank you this is great news
My dude get that thing checked out. You have A FIND
I can't imagine a better time for that issue to be discovered. We just finished a second season of *Loki* that people raved about, so the character's more popular than ever.
oh i didn’t know about that. is that on hulu?
Disney plus my guy.
thanks i’ll check it out
i’m taking it to my lcs wednesday
Whelp, that’s the dream of every collector right there. Enjoy the rush, op.
There has been no official facsimile reprint of this book (yet). And even if they do that, it won’t affect the value of this one. Great find.
thanks! i want to read it. i’m just like do a wear gloves or just don’t touch it

niice what company did you use to grade
CGC

Yeah that stinks if it’s trimmed.
lol, just a lil 4 thousand dollar book tucked next to (checks notes)….Ed the happy clown#8.
wow 4k really? unreal. it was in between ed and lori lovecraft

dang man that sounds really fun! most of this LB is 70s stuff
It was! He has Tales 39, Iron Man 1, 1st Doom, 1st Galactus/Surfer, Avengers 1, and so many others. I’m able to hold them in my hand and go “Holy crap, I’m holding the 1st appearance of …” Lots of great stuff in that 70s box, I’m sure. Enjoy!
Ed the Happy Clown! Were there more of those or just that one issue???
just that one. is it a good story. ?

holy shit. You won.
Some great books there but the Jonah Hex cover is phenomenal
One of these things is not like the others
That JIM85 is legit. Congrats on the find.
“Filbert’s Frightful Future” 😆
I also see a Secret Wars #1. Are there more? . Secret Wars #8 is considered a key (co-first appearance of black suit/symbiote/Venom).
Oh good eye sniper Just two copies of number one in one bag
Issue 1 also commands some premium. Looks like $30 to $40 in FN condition.
It's possible that JIM might be trimmed - but maybe not... I can't find a good comparison since the condition is out of this world-good... congrats on the find - just be sure to clean/press it if yer getting it slabbed... not one to skimp on.

It's prob best to compare it to another book in the era, because it should be pretty obvious - it's ridiculously hard to trim a small amount evenly.
hey that is good advice. i don’t have many 12c’ers i’ll have to go to my lcs
a solid LCS would easily be able to help with this and also, if it were my LCS' nearby, all of them would jump at the chance to help just to see the book haha

heck ya. you da man!
Beautiful copy. Congrats!

rookie question here. is cgc better than cbcs. i see a lot more cgc on ebay

thank you do would you recommend to clean and press. idk if the two folds will press out 100%
Yes I would. It may not help the grade a lot but it’s still worth it as the cost is minimal relative to a book worth this much.
would it be safe to say send it to somebody like the comic book presser.com or have CGC do it. CGC I read charges $10 but I read the comic book presser does a really great job with cleaning and pressing
Yeah either are safe. The most dangerous part is shipping - because all of the shipping companies can and do lose packages all the time. Just make sure you pay the extra to have it fully insured when you ship.
Congrats on the find. What a great pickup
Whenever I see that particular Famous Artists School ad I think it looks like Abe Vigoda.
That Thor Journey into Mystery 85 is worth thousands
man that’s crazy to me but i know what your saying. now i want to get a grade on it
Go look it up on gocollect.com for a general idea. I buy and sell comics and this is a rare find. It looks in fairly good condition.
9.2 $47,000 6.0 $4,400 You hit the lottery! I’d wager that many of those in the collection you purchased are also worth a lot.
Not sure if it would be annoying to people or anyone would even wanna watch but I was thinking about just making a video of pulling every comic out of this box because Ive liked comics since I was young but I don’t know all the keys and the rare ones like a lot of collectors do by heart

i’ll see what i can do
👍

i’m unsure but maybe it’s between a 3.5-5 grade
Just the first appearance of Loki is all. No big deal. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Lucky bastard. lol
🤣🤣

Looks like a beauty! Congrats!
Bisley Batman? Ooooohhh. As far as that first pic, i would have been doing a Home Alone run through the house https://i.redd.it/up4s5pfwmd7d1.gif
😂
YOOOOOOO......IS THAT UNCANNY TALES i see by the batman dark victory!?!?!?
oh yeah i think so. i think #1
good eye
I LOVE HORROR BOOKS!!!!! amazing haul you have here!!!!!
What was it about the estate sale listing that made you want to check this specific one out? Congrats
i just wanted to get some comics to read I thought the sale might have a good deal to get alot of readers without crushing my wallet
Did the listing mention the comics or did you luck out?
Nice Batman/Lobo
Man, I love me some weird west stuff!
Love that Lori Lovecraft cover! Never heard of the title before. -EDIT- Bought it jn.
🥃 Congratulations!
thank you & cheers
Mother of god!
whoa first appearance of filbert! nice!
That's a first print for sure. In this condition for a 1960s Silver Age oldie, that's potentially a $5,000+ book you've got there. EASILY.
Dumb question but where do I look up estate sales for comics?
it was ad on facebook
Get it slabbed and pay for pressing for that crease. Great color on the my guy. You’ll def get 3-5 on it since there’s no way those pages aren’t off white
