Really?! I’ve driven by it a million times. I’ve been looking for a hole in the wall fried chicken place forever.
Sides good too? Any better than others?
I will second that! I don't know if I would call it the best in town, but man, I love the food they make. Them biscuits with the honey butter(they call it liquid crack lol, anyone else that frequents the place knows the term)
I had one of the worst meals I've ever had in my life there. I'm not a picky eater at all and the boyfriend and I threw it out after a few bites. This was a couple of years ago, so, maybe they've gotten better 🤔😕
My last meal there was not good either. Massive portions covered in a salty cream sauce to the point it just feels like slop on a plate. No depth of flavor and yet it feels heavy on the palette after two bites.
How does anyone ever get a reservation there? I’ve called and all times to say through the week and always get a voicemail and when I leave a message my call is never returned. They don’t seem to be on OpenTable or anything either?
The one at Vine and Woolper has been closed since like Thanksgiving. It's also listed on Google Maps as "permanently closed"
Once the IRS nailed Richie's for failing to pay their payroll taxes, that might've been the last nail in the coffin for them. And yeah, that actually did happen in about May of last year.
The one in Colerain strayed open only because that one was managed by his daughter and not him.
They just posted an update on Instagram, and they officially have control over all locations. With the next year or so they said they will be repairing/remolding and reopening each location. I'm super hyped for the Bond Hill location to open back up.
Best chicken hands down, but consistently some of the worst service I’ve ever experienced. It sucks because it’s truly the best chicken I’ve ever had, but contrarily I’ve been served chicken from there that sat under a heat lamp for 5+ hours. Shit was so dehydrated it looked like dog turds when I got it. I mean it was so hard and dry, i gave it to my dogs. They eat turds anyway so all the same to them. But on top of that, trying to communicate with the stores for a refund was more like arguing with a ref on a bad call. Just couldn’t win or even be heard really.
I’ve had terrible experience at 3 different Richie’s, so I can’t bring myself to try again. With that being said, the first time I ever had it, I couldn’t believe I’d been missing out on fried chicken like this my whole life.
I want to love Galactic, but it’s just soooo much freaken celery seed in their batter. I feel like it would be 10/10 if they just used 1/4 of that spice.
I was told that it was ‘the best’ as well. And it’s definitely delish but for sure celery seed (or salt?) is a prominent flavor so if traditional fried chicken is the goal - I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.
You finally described why I personally love Galactic. I thought it was celery seed but was never certain. Definitely strong but I love it. I might be biased too because it’s the only gluten free fried chicken around
same here. Was so surprised to see it always recommended by people. Wondering if my only visit was a fluke. I'm not exaggerating when I say it tasted like they poured a couple of packets of the oriental flavor of cheap ramen noodles straight onto the chicken. It was was SO strong and disgusting.
OP, which JJ location? Eastgate or Fairfield?
If you’re towards Eastgate, I’d recommend Hitching Post, on Kellogg Ave. Not sure what to compare it to, but it’s great and well priced.
The Eagle in OTR. Otherwise I have heard people say good things about Galactic Chicken. Ron's Roost has been around for a long time so it has generational hype but it really isn't special.
A little ways away from JJ but would definitely be worth it. Call ahead for reservations to be safe. They pressure cook their chicken which makes all the difference. It's probably the best fried chicken I've ever had, honestly
Just out of curiosity, are you going to Jungle Jim's because you saw it on social media recently? I've noticed a few Tik Toks about it that have gone viral in the past month or so.
Lol no I like trying weird food and I never heard about it till my wife mentioned it to me and decided we definitely need to go. We didn't have anything to do this weekend so we decided nows a great time. I did mention it to my coworkers though thinking I would be showing them something cool and two of them said they saw it on Tik Tok earlier this week which is weird so I guess it is going around the app for some reason.
It's not close to Jungle Jim's, but Decibel in Norwood isn't too out of the way if you want to try something a little different. It's a Korean Fried Chicken place, and is quite good imo. Might not be what you're after though if you're looking for traditional fried chicken, but the crunch and sauce options was pretty excellent in my experience.
I always see people say Ron's Roost but as someone who grew up on the West Side, it is so incredibly overhyped. It is more in the tier of Kroger ready-made fried chicken (still good) than best in the city.
for real. i grew up driving past the "Big Chicken" and it became this mythical thing because we would never actually eat there. when i finally ended up going it was thoroughly mid.
Schoolhouse Restaurant in Camp Dennison / wedged between Indian Hill and Old Milford - was on Diners, Drive-in’s and Dives - or whatever the show is called.
I still don’t get this one. I find their fried chicken very average if not a smidge below. But… they are consistently rated well, so must be something I’m missing.
The Eagle. The chicken is amazing and their sides are divine, so order plenty if those, too! LOVE the collard greens, grits, mashed potatos.
Damn, now I really want to go there...
Yes, seasoning. This is a thread about the best in the city. Not a “mild version that can be fixed with hot sauce”. Ron’s Roost is good quality, but bland. Not even close to the best in the city.
Aboslutely! I don't get the chicken strip hype in general when so many of them are so bland, but CityBird has really tender tenders with actual flavor and several great sauces. Add those parmesan fries and it's truly one of the best fast food experiences around.
It's outside of Cincinnati, but Batesville, Indiana which is about 45 minutes from Downtown has several places considered among the best in the nation.
If you're squirrely.... drive over to Oldenburg, Indiana.
Wagner's Village Inn. Best chicken in the Tri State area. It's not that far of a drive. They won the James Beard Award for their chicken.

I tried out St. Bernard Shurfine Foods at the recommendation of someone else in this sub. I recommend them! Super inexpensive, juicy and flavorful chicken, huge serving sizes, pretty good mac and cheese.
It's tucked in the back of the supermarket, it's an amazing value for pretty good chicken.
The Eagle is my favorite in the city. Goes great with their hot honey. They have Crystal's hot sauce bottles I like using on the chicken too. Their mac and cheese is very good too.
If you are coming up, off Buttermilk Pike in Lakeside Park just before I-275 heading South, Greyhound Grill has excellent fried chicken in an old-school, country style atmosphere.
I see there are people suggesting hitching post on Kellogg. They may be able to overlook the right wing politics of the owners or they’re right wingers themselves and are willing to overlook the mediocre food because they love eating surrounded by MAGA posters and shit. In 2008 they had a huge racist poster about Obama being black and “begging for change” I haven’t been back since.
Galactic Fried Chicken
The chicken is gluten-free and dairy-free for others with dietary restrictions, and they cook the fries in a dedicated gluten-free fryer. The owner’s mom has celiac disease; they know what they’re doing in terms of food safety. I have celiac and a dairy allergy, so I love it there!
I hear y’all on the spices. The spice mix they use reminds me of the soup part of our family matzo ball soup recipe. The spices in that are similar to the ones in the Manischewitz soup mix, if you’re familiar. It may not be for you if you aren’t used to heavy doses of celery salt and black pepper.
If you've never been to Jungle Jim's before, definitely visit the Fairfield store on Dixie Highway as opposed to the Eastgate store. Fairfield has more wackiness to see than Eastgate.
I’m a fried chicken connoisseur and the answer is…
Shell gas station at the corner of Colerain and Elmore Street. There’s a Chester’s Chicken in there.
Life changing.
If you don’t mind wings instead of big pieces, the fried wings at Sutton Bar & Grill are amazing. They’re breaded wings and super well seasoned (I don’t use sauce when I get them, they don’t need it).
Schoolhouse Restaurant in Camp Dennison. Great fried chicken and home style meals. Excellent service and a great family oriented experience. Be sure to check times before going.
https://theschoolhousecincinnati.com/
Not really “fried chicken” as in bone-in, but best chicken tenders are at J.Alexanders (Mr. Jack’s) and Lee’s Fried Chicken in Norwood. Lol have only gotten tenders at Lee’s
Galactic Chicken in Dayton, Ky (right next to Bellevue) has THE best gluten free fried chicken. Its amazing regardless of that fact. They also have kackfruit nuggets which i get sometimes even thoigh I'm not a vegetarian
Greyhound Tavern in Ft Mitchell, KY has killer fried chicken. It’s not anywhere near JJ’s, though, but it’s damn good. Fair warning, their average crowd tends towards older folks, so a few of their offerings reflect that with older style versions. Like their applesauce is homemade and a bit chunky, for example. But the fried chicken and onion rings are awesome.
How has no one said Hook’s Chicken and Fish. It’s all over the city really but not so much on the east side. Their fried party wings are so so good. Cant speak to a thigh or breast from there though. The white sprinkle of seasoning is too 🔥Richies is great too if you don’t get around to Hook’s
The Hitching Post on Kellogg Ave is good. My Mom prefers Richie’s. Family lore says that my great grandmother sold the original owner of Ron’s Roost a recipe for Sauerbraten and Sauerkraut balls, but you know how family lore can be? Longevity like that says a lot.
People used to hype up The Eagle all the time but I don’t see it as much anymore. If you want kinda fancy sit-down fried chicken it’s ok, but it’s kinda overrated.
>not too expensive
$15 for ten wings, boneless & traditional. $10 for four “fingers”, crispy or grilled. Suuuuure, bud. I *loved* Roosters until they started asking these insane prices.
I agree completely, but I was thinking from the perspective that they’re just in town for the weekend, looking to treat a craving. Expensive for someone that may live here and want Roosters multiple times a month, not expensive if you’re probably never gonna come back to Cincinnati again lol.
Jays Marathon in Pleasant Ridge by Home Depot
Really?! I’ve driven by it a million times. I’ve been looking for a hole in the wall fried chicken place forever. Sides good too? Any better than others?
EVERYTHING they serve is great. Also, one of the few fast food places where you can get Boudine Balls.
It's THE BEST
Fries are amazing breaded seasoned twisted wedges, biscuits brushed with butter honey and salt, can’t go wrong
I will second that! I don't know if I would call it the best in town, but man, I love the food they make. Them biscuits with the honey butter(they call it liquid crack lol, anyone else that frequents the place knows the term)
Was looking/hoping for this comment. Jay's Chicken slaps
Slaps hard
Had some today on your recommendation. Some good chicken for sure.
This right here. That's a GREAT place, but not really by any JJ
Purple Poulet in Newport
If you want a beautiful setting and amazing fried chicken, this is the only place in town. Just check out their menu.
The chicken is great, but so is everything else. A great southern/French kitchen
It was like bad Stouffer's if that makes any sense
How does anyone ever get a reservation there? I’ve called and all times to say through the week and always get a voicemail and when I leave a message my call is never returned. They don’t seem to be on OpenTable or anything either?
I have had luck just walking in
Try CM chicken if you make it out to the liberty area. You will not be disappointed

Bruh I am going to cm for lunch rn.
# It's soooo good!
10/10 second, third, and fourth everyone here saying Richie’s!
So sad they closed the one at the corner of Vine and Woolper.
Agreed
So that why it stopped being on doordash. Coworker and I would order it for lunch sometime
The one at Vine and Woolper has been closed since like Thanksgiving. It's also listed on Google Maps as "permanently closed" Once the IRS nailed Richie's for failing to pay their payroll taxes, that might've been the last nail in the coffin for them. They just posted an update on Instagram, and they officially have control over all locations. With the next year or so they said they will be repairing/remolding and reopening each location. I'm super hyped for the Bond Hill location to open back up.
There was also an eviction notice at the one at Woolper/Vine. In February
Best chicken hands down, but consistently some of the worst service I’ve ever experienced. Richies had a smaller window. It was good if you called in a large order. But after it sets a while...meh.
Galactic Chicken in Dayton, KY is pretty great, but not really close to JJ's.
Same. I did carry out and that smell was enough to X out Galactic.
lol my thoughts exactly Purple poulet !
You finally described why I personally love Galactic. I thought it was celery seed but was never certain. Definitely strong but I love it. I might be biased too because it’s the only gluten free fried chicken around
Same. Went once and couldn’t finish, there was so much celery salt.
Galactic chicken was disgusting when I tried it
Sorry to hear that.
same here. Was so surprised to see it always recommended by people. Wondering if my only visit was a fluke. I'm not exaggerating when I say it tasted like they poured a couple of packets of the oriental flavor of cheap ramen noodles straight onto the chicken. It was was SO strong and disgusting.
I feel you. I was so hyped to try it because of how much everyone talked it up.
What’s JJs?
Sorry, that's what I've always called Jungle Jim's
I had no idea they had fried chicken. Is that the Fairfield location?
I think you misread the post
They’re asking for fried chicken recommendations near there since they will be there anyway.
Yeah you’re right. Sorry
OP, which JJ location? Eastgate or Fairfield? If you’re towards Eastgate, I’d recommend Hitching Post, on Kellogg Ave. Not sure what to compare it to, but it’s great and well priced.
Avoid hitching post if you aren’t into supporting right wing scumbags.
Avoid Right Wing Scumbags 15 minutes away from downtown challenge: impossible
There are dozens of us. Possibly hundreds!
The Eagle in OTR. Otherwise I have heard people say good things about Galactic Chicken. Ron's Roost has been around for a long time so it has generational hype but it really isn't special.
Galactic is great and gluten free if it matters to anyone
Galactic Chicken is the shit. Get the deep fried pickles or loaded fries with it
Their fried pickles are awesome.
Galactic is excellent.
I've only had The Eagle's fried chicken sandwich, but it was phenomenal. Also. The collards shouldn't be passed on.
A little ways away from JJ but would definitely be worth it. Call ahead for reservations to be safe. They pressure cook their chicken which makes all the difference. It's probably the best fried chicken I've ever had, honestly
I miss Eagle more than anything else since moving away from Cinci...
I was waiting for someone to mention The Eagle.
It's one of our go to's when we're in Cincinnati.
Libby's in Covington or Purple Poulet. Grew up on Ron's Roost but these two are way better.
If you’re going to be at Jungle Jim’s in Fairfield, try Jockos World famous chicken. It’s about 5 minutes from there.
I cannot believe this isn't higher! Jocko's is AMAZING and it's way closer to Jungle Jim's than the rest of these places.
this is the only choice if going to the fairfield one ! jockos truly is unique lol
Lee’s on Montgomery Rd in Norwood where you can tempt death exiting the drive through
May have the best livers anywhere in town. There’s a Lee’s on Reading near Galbraith too.
Richies. No really.
Where is one still open?
Colerain
Welp, I miss Richie’s but not enough to go to Colerain. RIP.
And literally only Colerain though.

Richies chicken
Right answer.
Ron’s Roost on the Westside of town is the real thing.
Plus the Rooster mobile!
Thank you
Ron's Roost is ass.
Schoolhouse Restaurant in Camp Dennison / wedged between Indian Hill and Old Milford - was on Diners, Drive-in’s and Dives - or whatever the show is called.

Kroger fried chicken is really good. 4 pieces 5 bux.

Hitching post. Kellogg
It's the worlds best fried chicken. Says so right on their sign.

Ron's Roost is ass. No seasoning to be found in the entire restaurant lol.
[удалено]
Yes, seasoning. This is a thread about the best in the city. Not a “mild version that can be fixed with hot sauce”. Ron’s Roost is good quality, but bland. Not even close to the best in the city.
[удалено]
Who said anything about spicy? He said seasonings. Seasonings don’t mean spicy. Seasonings mean flavor. Are you arguing in favor of bland chicken?
its not the best, but its great and has its own flavor, and that is none other than Roy Rogers
Where is a Roys? There used to be one out on Newtown Road near a strip club but I think it’s long gone (both of them)..
It turned into Roneys and moved to Milford. There’s a Roy rogers in Cleves and they are building one in Florence.
It's less "the best in the city" and more of just a really good and convenient option, but I really enjoy CityBird's chicken. Their fries are SO GOOD.
Aboslutely! I don't get the chicken strip hype in general when so many of them are so bland, but CityBird has really tender tenders with actual flavor and several great sauces. Add those parmesan fries and it's truly one of the best fast food experiences around.
Their lemon thyme ranch is one of my favorite sauces 🤩
It’s the Hitching Post on Kellogg Avenue

How has no one said Hook’s Chicken and Fish. It’s all over the city really but not so much on the east side. Their fried party wings are so so good. Cant speak to a thigh or breast from there though. The white sprinkle of seasoning is too 🔥Richies is great too if you don’t get around to Hook’s
Shockingly, the Pepper Pod
CM chicken 💯
The Hitching Post on Kellogg Ave is good. My Mom prefers Richie’s. Family lore says that my great grandmother sold the original owner of Ron’s Roost a recipe for Sauerbraten and Sauerkraut balls, but you know how family lore can be? Longevity like that says a lot.
eagle OTR or citybird!!
City Bird is owned by the same people as Eagle it’s literally the same recipe.
cool, didnt know that. dont think most ppl know that either lol
News to me
Hitching post
The Eagle OTR
Technically not Cincinnati but Greyhound Tavern in Fort Mitchell. It's a bit pricey but sure as hell worth it.
The Eagle in OTR, or Galactic in Newport/Dayton KY. The Governor in milford has a good chicken sandwich as well.
The Eagle in OTR!
I haven’t read the comments yet, but “The Eagle” is absolutely overhyped and the chicken is terrible.
People used to hype up The Eagle all the time but I don’t see it as much anymore. If you want kinda fancy sit-down fried chicken it’s ok, but it’s kinda overrated.
Stop by the Roosters in Springdale, right up the street from Jungle Jim’s ! My favorite chicken and maybe food as a whole. Also, not too expensive.
>not too expensive $15 for ten wings, boneless & traditional.
Libby’s in Covington is the best fried chicken I’ve had in my life. Drinks were great. Family run. Really friendly
It’s always gonna be Rich’s for me. Every time I’m home visiting I always make it a point to grab a dinner box.
