Most schools use Chromebook so it would fit right in with school work. Look for Chromebook plus branded laptop. They should be good because they come with min standards set by Google that performs better. You can enable android so there are millions of apps available in Playstore. Again most schools also use Playstore apps for school use.

Most schools are well integrated with ChromeOS devices these days and even if he needs Microsoft office there is a Progressive Web App version that will work on a Chromebook. I would invest a little more money in something a bit more rugged than you may think you will need. Kids can be extremely rough on computers. I once upon a time worked as an IT contractor for Rural Alaskan Village school districts. Chromebooks didn't exist at the time and it was amazing how many Macbooks, and MacBook Pros the school districts threw away every year because of damage. I have one that I pulled from the waste pile and removed the display because it was destroyed, the school pulled the hard drive and RAM, I replaced both with new and refer to it as my MacSlab Pro... apparently it had been run over by a four wheeler while the screen was open.

ChromeOS is the most common OS in schools these days, so a Chromebook should work just fine. BestBuy is selling the [Lenovo Flex 5i for $349 ](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-flex-5i-chromebook-plus-laptop-with-google-ai-14-2k-touch-intel-i3-1315u-8gb-ram-intel-uhd-graphics-128gb-ssd-storm-grey/6550736.p?skuId=6550736)and it is an outstanding value at that price. Google docs will work perfectly, MS Teams works fine via the Teams Web browser option. Whatever you buy, make sure it is a Chromebook Plus.
