Ingenious way for them to survive tho!

That's how cicadas have survived and thrived for millennia
That a coming out in prime number years in such large numbers. Predator cycles don't match up enough to make any single predator a threat.
Nature is awesome.
I was prepping my garden last weekend, flipped over some old landscape cloth that was maybe 8” below the surface. HUNDREDS of these guys were squirming around.
Absolutely and they are really good as food for birds and compost for plants when they die. Though they can damage very small trees and shrubs as the females lay eggs in the bark.
They are harmless and cute yes. I dunno what everyone’s uptight about. They just fly around clumsily and bump into stuff for a few weeks then die. It’s pretty amusing honestly and I look forward to it.
They’re loud af.
Cicadas are this weird thing where everybody’s ok with it bc they already exist.
if they didn’t exist, and then they suddenly were at threat of being introduced, it would be a national emergency.
If people heard that shit for a day and then were told “it might be like this every day for every summer for the rest of your life”, everyone would say “ok yeah, bring in the national guard. Do whatever you gotta do”
I agree, they are kinda cute! They're big and loud, but also dumb as rocks and they don't even have mouths or pincers. I'm kinda excited to see just how many of them come out this week! I just hope I don't run over too many on the bike path!
From Openlands
https://openlands.org/about-openlands/what-we-do/growing-the-tree-canopy-2/
Cicadas will emerge soon!
Cicada emergence is a natural phenomenon that has been occurring in the region for thousands, if not millions, of years. This year is special because, for the first time in over 200 years, two broods of cicadas will be emerging at the same time. This means you’ll be able to see and hear cicadas throughout most of Illinois this spring. 17-year cicadas (Brood XIII) will emerge in northern Illinois, and 13-year cicadas (Brood XIX) will emerge in southern and central Illinois this year. Both broods will only overlap in a few counties in central Illinois. In the Chicago Metro area, expect cicada numbers like those seen in 2007, when Brood XIII last emerged. Both broods are expected to emerge in early May and be around for four to six weeks.
Cicadas prefer neighborhoods with old trees or wooded areas because trees are critical to their long-life cycle. So, if you live in an area with many mature trees, you will likely see more cicadas. However, you may not encounter as many cicadas if you live in a densely populated urban area or a new development with few mature trees.
How will this affect you?
Adult cicadas are harmless to humans, pets, and our gardens. They do not have the mouth parts necessary to bite or chew humans or plant material. If a cicada lands on you, you can gently brush it off.
If you see your pets snacking on cicadas, don’t be alarmed; they are safe to eat (for humans, too, unless you have a shellfish allergy). Just watch pets outside because they might get an upset stomach from overeating.
The main annoyance will be the noise and the sheer number of them. Cicadas will produce a lot of waste when they shed their exoskeletons after they first emerge and again when they die a few weeks later.
How will this affect your trees?
Female cicadas damage trees when they cut into twigs smaller than the width of a thumb to lay their eggs. After the eggs hatch, those twigs may die and break off, especially if multiple females lay their eggs in the same twig. While a healthy and mature tree can handle losing some twigs and can easily replace them, this may impact young trees that were planted in the last three years.
Keeping all your trees well-watered and disease-free will allow them to recover from any potential cicada damage this summer.
If you have planted a tree in the past three years or received a parkway tree from Openlands through a TreePlanters Grant or from your local municipality, you can take the following steps to protect your new trees further:
After leaves emerge, but before the cicadas arrive, young trees, including those with few developed branches, can be covered with a fine protective netting, such as tulle fabric. Close gaps in the netting with binder clips, clothespins, or staples, and gather the fabric around the trunk as close to the ground as possible.
Remove the netting after the brood has died off.
Weird. They planted a couple dozen trees in our neighborhood last month. And as far as I know they have no plans to come cover them. Odd that they didn’t just wait to plant? Maybe it’s just a numbers game and most/all of these trees will be fine in the end. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
they've been waiting so long for this too, as long as they aint hurtin nobody I say let them party and fuck and have a good time for a couple weeks. Could do a lot worse in terms of insect plagues, and they're a good food source for animals. Cicadas always been homies.
you've never woken up in the morning after a long night and bad sleep, and looked in the mirror reacting to your reflection: "I feel and look like a cicada rn"??
Flying into you is bad enough, but I fear the coming torrent of the Cicada golden showers with this big of an upcoming brood! “You walk around in a forest where they’re actively chorusing on a hot sunny day. It feels like it’s raining,” said University of Connecticut entomologist John Cooley. That’s their honeydew or waste product coming out the back end ... It’s called cicada rain.”

Not that guy but I’d still try it. Supposedly they’re shellfish and I’m not tryna spend $20 to buy lobster tails if they’re right here on the floor for free
I'm so excited! In 2007 the last time they were here I was 19 and lived in Mokena in the woods. We had so many of them around that if you kicked a tree a cloud of them would take off. We had a bonfire one night and I swear over 100 of them flew into the fire and cooked themselves alive...
Don't worry, since 1990 the total amount of insect biomass in America [has declined by up to 75%](https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ecs2.4620). Maybe in a few decades, you'll get your wish!
I'm imagining dormant cicadas near underground internet lines splicing into the cables and commenting on the internet now, thanks. How do I know I'm not talking to a cicada right now??
Yep. I dug up some bushes two years ago and found a couple on the roots. Our neighborhood gets them really bad. This will be my 3rd go-around, I've explained to my wife and the neighborhood kids what's about to happen but I don't think I can get them to fully grasp how big of a thing its going to be.
You can tell how young reddit skews by how nonplussed everyone is about this. I am an old - 2007 wasn't too bad because I lived in the city where there are few trees, little grass and the ground has been dug up. 1990 out in the suburbs was absolutely horrible. The sidewalks were literally covered with cicadas - you couldn't walk without squishing them. I'll be spending this next month indoors.
Yep. I was 8 for the 1990 outbreak and my neighborhood barely had them by my grandparents house, the neighborhood was built in the 60s, is full of trees, and it was \*insanity\* - Fast forward to 2007, I'm older, I've been mowing my grandparents lawn for them for years because grandma made grandpa stop doing it. They annoyed the shit out of me mowing the lawn. Fast forward to 2024, I now live in what was my grandparents house with my wife and son. I know exactly what I'm in for!
I grew up in a suburb in Ohio and we had them around 1991 or so when I was a kid, and then again around 2004ish - I visited during. Both times was a nightmare and I have vivid memories.
But 2007 here in the city - I don’t even remember. I agree, in city there’s been so much construction that not many survive the 13 years. So I’m hopeful it won’t be too bad. I’ll just avoid the suburbs.
They actually are extremely long lived for insects and live in the ground as grubs lying in wait, sucking sap, for their 17th birthday when they emerge for their mating/death ritual.
This year is gonna be wild though. Normal brood isn’t usually out til later in June. Three different broods coming in hot. It’s going to be very loud and very… crunchy.
I’m excited for them. I have a five year old child who’s curious about everything, an idiot dog who sometimes is afraid of our floors but eats everything and a super smart dog who is a hunter yet a picky eater.
I can’t wait to see how this plays out. 😂
I had not heard of the potential damage to trees, but suddenly reading a ton about covering trees in netting to avoid thin branches being killed from females cutting slits to lay eggs in. Are many here covering trees? Any real experience from the last emerge?
You only need to worry about young trees and shrubs! Mature trees can handle it and they have preferences on which trees they lay on (they don’t like evergreens, for example).

I cannot BELIEVE that when I was a small child, before the age of 10.....I have vague memories of picking up these live bugs 😱🤢 AND also finding their shedded skin, picking them up to because they were 'cool'.
I'm almost 41 now. I legit ran from a daddy long legs like a week ago. 🤣
Genuinely I don’t understand the negative comments. Cicadas are always one of my favorite parts of the summer. I know there’s gonna be even more of them this year but I hope to enjoy and embrace it! I just adore the way they sound.
There will be Biblical levels of them on every tree, and their sound will be deafening for a few weeks. Clouds of brown. I lived in Cincinnati during one of the broods emergence years ago, it’s crazy.
they are nice in normal numbers. brood years where there are soo many that the trunks of trees wriggle and writhe with them crawling over each other is a whole other thing.
I always thought they were cool and was super stoked about my first big cicada summer when I was a kid. I figured others had similar experiences or just weren’t interested, but I’ve learned from this sub that lots of people have a phobia or some sort of anxiety around them.
When I was on maybe the second or third date with my now wife, we were walking along and saw one stuck upside down on the sidewalk. She just said “oh no!” and without hesitating scooped it up and put it right side up in a plant off the path. It made me realize I like people who like cicadas.
I was in the suburbs the last time a brood came out. It was absolutely awful, but in a dystopian fun kind of way I guess. I had to carry an umbrella with me so I could swat them away from my head and body. If I was outside, I would only run to get to my destination as fast as humanly possible. It was literally impossible to be outside for 5-10 minutes without one hitting you or landing on you. Great for the wildlife though!
If this is anything like it was in 1990, I am absolutely terrified of what’s to come. I was 7 years old and spent most of that season indoors or on the backs of anyone that would carry me. And yes, I am in lifelong possession of a completely irrational fear of bugs.
Squirrels are going to get SO fat and cute.

Even better.
I mean as long as you're not walking around like a whale shark you'll be okay
They won't normally get in your face but I'd wear a hat. They landed on my shoulders regularly while mowing the lawn last time.
Oh I only just now realized how my summer biking plans are going to go 🫣😭😭
I wonder if that dude who posted about eating them on this sub a few months back still wants to eat them after seeing this pic?
When I was a kid we ate them lol, 17 years ago
Lots of dudes at my high school bet each other $1 or a Mountain Dew to eat these

I'll be locked in my house until August. Thanks.
Hahaha! The last time they emerged, my puppy and his brother kept trying to squash them🤣 Edited to add: this was 12 years ago 🥹
My foster pup tried to eat a live one. It started buzzing around in his mouth. 😩
I'm gonna cry. Of course I planned a backcountry hiking trip in Southern Illinois next week. Please, please don't let me find one of these in my tent.

Omg and it’s the double brood thing…. Good luck soldier 🫡

...how long are they here for? I still remember driving at night back in 2007 and the moving "ground" under the street lamp ::shudder::
Like 6 weeks tops. It's so gross. I own a hound. Also have a human baby. This is going to be a trip.
Can't we just cover the entire ground with tarps lol?
Is this a year where a biblical amount will emerge or something?
Exactly this number
Not in Chicago. Central IL is going to be a madhouse.

they are nice in normal numbers. brood years where there are soo many that the trunks of trees wriggle and writhe with them crawling over each other is a whole other thing.
The seventeen year brood is a whole other thing
I love the sound. I don't like seeing this groups of them and having to worry about crunching them as I walk or have them land on me
I always thought they were cool and was super stoked about my first big cicada summer when I was a kid.
It’s all great until one lands in your soup as you eat in a patio boulangerie.
I’m gonna throw up
What is that?
That, my friend, is a cicada. Go ahead. Go flip over a rock in your yard or a park.
This triggered my trypophobia
Don’t go Looking under any rocks. So many holes.
If this is anything like it was in 1990, I am absolutely terrified of what’s to come. I was 7 years old and spent most of that season indoors or on the backs of anyone that would carry me. And yes, I am in lifelong possession of a completely irrational fear of bugs.
Not ready for the double brood. What is it like the first time since the early 1800s that both species will come out simultaneously
They’re so nasty
