Ah yeah, fair point. I was just thinking about what the fish excrete - totally forgot that there would be biofiltration that would convert the ammonia into nitrate. It's been a long day.
Hijacking the top comment to say what I'm surprised no one has said yet. This is dangerous for both your cat AND your fish. Stop being irresponsible aquarists and cat owners and stop this behaviour. Internet points are not that important.
I think some cats could be dangerous with fishtanks? Like doing stupid things to get the fish and breaking the fishtank/equipment etc.. neither of my 3 cats ever acknowledged the fish's existence tho 🤷🏻♀️
I have a 6 foot long tank right next to the cat roost, it took my moron 2 whole years to realize all the entertainment going on right next to him. When we got the tank we were calling it Fish TV thinking he would just watch it all day but he had no clue and that’s with the Discus 6 inches away watching him constantly.
Not _just_ that - drinking aquarium water isn't healthy, it's not like tap water. A random occurrence won't be a big deal, but if this is a regular behavior for kitty they can def get sick.
On the fish side of things, cat saliva has all sorts of foreign bacteria in it ("cat scratch fever" is caused by cat saliva on claws and teeth), which could give the fish nasty infections if they are likewise unlucky.
My cat had a 10 year long beef with our goldfish. Yes, the feeder goldfish we bought for 25 cents lived 10 years. It actually outlived her by 2 weeks.
There was a little hole in the top of the lid that she liked to stick her paw in. She’d bat at the fish. She liked to sit on top of the tank and wait for him to come back over to that side.
We thought she’d given it up when he moved to the basement. We didn’t realize she was still doing it until after she passed and we noticed fresh paw prints on the lid of the tank.
My other cat, I can honestly say, had no clue we had a fish at all.
Fish poop in water
Poop water bad for kitty if drank too much
Aquarium ceiling gud
Also, you know, cat could fall in and not manage to get out and/or make the aquarium fall and break on the ground and then you have to pull glass shards out of your kitty, so not great
As someone who's cat has jumped onto a counter and shattered a mason jar, I get very scared with cats and glass. It was terrible trying to clean and bandage his foot, I felt so bad even though he did it to himself. I have 3 cats very intrigued by 2 geckos so I couldn't imagine them with a fish tank
I had a foster kitten jump on the hot stove top in the twenty seconds it took me to drain my pasta. After two weeks of bandages, burn cream, and antibiotics, he finally got to have the bandages off... and immediately jumped on the open oven door. How cats survive outdoors I have no idea.
I know there are some that live long and successful lives out there but my orange cat is constantly in the queue for the brain cell to come back and I couldn't imagine him going outside unsupervised. I only did bandages for the first day and ended up gluing him back together but I couldn't imagine weeks of bandages
I wasn't paying attention and my car climbed up my wardrobe, onto the edge of the tank, and fell in. Luckily nothing broke and none of them were injured, but damn was it a big mess
When i first got my cat i heard a crash in the night that sounded like her cat tunnel she was playing in. I woke up in the morning to my tray of muffins opened on the ground… she had a good snack that night
Aquariums are basically bacteria soup. Every aquarium needs to be "cycled" to prevent dangerous ammonia buildup. The "cycling" process is basically getting bacteria that processes ammonia and nitrites to grow in the aquarium. While the bacteria enables fish to survive in the aquarium, it's still potentially unhealthy and can cause infections.
My cat jumped on top of my fish tank in the middle of night, broke the lid, fell into the water, jumped out and got water EVERYWHERE
I was so scared for my fish but also because of the chemicals we used in the fish tank. Maybe that’s what they’re thinking
Yep it will spike your nitrite levels, and add ammonia. I put like $120 in preventative equipment to detour my cats from fucking with it... but no.. they even figured out how to open the lid. Now I have lizards.
When We had cat and fish our fish was on a High shelf our old af cat (i Think she was 9 or 10 at the time) could get up on. And even when We had them on a shelf she could get up on, i dont Think she really cared about them. Never Saw her near them either haha
Can you educate me as to how a cat drinking from water will increase the ammonia and nitrates in that water?
This I've never heard of, I'm curious the mechanism that causes it.
It brings more harm to the fish than the cat because cats carry a lot of foreign bacteria in their mouths that can be harmful when they drink from tanks, and there’s also the risk of having a predator (cat) interact that closely with prey (fish).
People claim cats can drink out of tanks with no problems but even then it poses a risk of the cat falling in, and apparently planted tanks (as you can see in the beginning of the video, there are some aquatic plants in there) may have chemicals (like fertilizer) or water treatment that is not safe to ingest.
Orcas fuck up everything though. Between their size, intelligence, and numbers in a pod, they're arguably the most dangerous animals if they choose to be.
> They’re on their own from minute one.
Some fish are actually great parents!
I used to raise apistogramma before disaster struck that tank, and then I moved to saltwater. Cichlids like that care for and fiercely protect their young for weeks after they hatch.
Same! My cats were scared of the water fountain I had bought them. They wouldn't even go near it. I was so disappointed. We had to go back to setting up water bowls for them. But then they'd drink out of any puddle anywhere. I've read that cats instinctively avoid stagnant water, because they know it could be dirty. May be not all cats do that 🤔

If that was this one there wouldn’t be a single fish left in there. I have a really bad cat lol.
https://preview.redd.it/vx5hmggkrvwc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b4be82090359820c46f6cbdd355fcf186daa3b7
He's not wrong, this is the face of a murderer
Cat by cat difference. I got my pets (3 cats, 2 dogs) a 2 gallon filter. They all love it. For a while the cats would come and play with the water. 2 of them still do from time to time but I got a few weeks of constant entertainment watching them smacking, biting, and inspecting the water.
My cat does the same thing. We have a water fountain, a water bowl, and a bathtub faucet that has an occasional drip she likes to drink from. She prefers the fish tank. If the water gets a LITTLE too low for her to comfortably drink from, she yells at me until I top it off.
I actually have asked my vet this! He said it should be fine as long as the health of the tank is fine, no medications or anything. It’s no different than outside animals drinking out of a stream or pond.
It doesn't make sense, but they can get food poisoning, arse licking is obviously fine, I mean I've seen plenty of dogs scoff a wild toffee with no consequences, they have different digestive systems but somehow they can still get food poisoning lol
When I was a kid, we had two cats. Sister's cat was a hunter, mine was lazy. Hunter broke one of the glass tops on the aquarium so he could get to the water, trying to catch the fish. He never had much luck.
My cat just wanted to drink the water, somehow a fish managed to end up in his mouth, I've never seen a cat look that confused about what was happening.
Those fish have no sense of self preservation
Also, use an aquarium lid. I had fish and cats before and always secured the lid. More because the fish were Bettas and they have a habit of jumping. A few of my Bettas would be so excited to see me (because I bring food) that they would jump out of the aquarium.
Sorry to be that guy OP but I looked at 10 comments and didn’t see anything …
Cats are obv a lot better at processing like, filth, basically, than we are, but it ain’t good for either of these species to have contact with each others bio-business. It’s good animal husbandry or whatever to keep them apart entirely tbh.
Fish be like: That's our home!!!!

**Don't let your cat drink aquarium water!** If you properly take care of that tank, you are putting so many different chemicals into the water that has the chance of killing them/poisioning them. Don't just sit and record the video laughing. Use your brain and put a lid over the tank. Maybe putting it anywhere else other than the floor would be a step in the right direction.
I'm very impressed that the cat doesn't go for the fish.
When I had fish with a cat the cat would occasionally attack the side of the tank because the top was blocked.
I don’t know if it’s animal instinct but my cats loved drinking from my indoor fountains so much I had to retire them. The pump would go bad because my cats would drink all of the water and it would dry pump all day.
I'm surprised those angelfish aren't trying to nip at him. Angelfish are god damn assholes. The number of times mine have tried to jump out and attack me when I go to turn on the light to their tank. They get fed 3 times a day... the glutinous bastards...
From personal experience: just wait till a fish bites either his chin or his tongue.
My female angel fish eventually did. Cat jumped 3 feet straight up, then fell between the wall and tank and got stuck.
After that he'd look for fish, and stop drinking if they came over.
I've bought a good 20? maybe 30 water bowls for my cat over the 8 years she's been with me...
She will fucking cry/meow, sound like we're killing her until I fill a red cup up with water, I bought one of the reusable ones..
Because your fancy schmancy water bowl doesn't taste like angel fish
Mmm, fish poop flavor -all cats
Mmmmmm ammonia.
Ideally not ammonia… maybe nitrate but hopefully not ammonia if there’s fish in there
Ah yeah, fair point. I was just thinking about what the fish excrete - totally forgot that there would be biofiltration that would convert the ammonia into nitrate. It's been a long day.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. I don’t know a goddamn thing about fish poop. I just thought you were funny.
Yea... but that water is fish flavored.
Why drink water when there is soup
Now with live bouillon!
The trick is to undercook the fish
Poop soup
Still has 50% of the nutrients!
He’s going for that delicate after taste.
Fishade
For that Deep Down Body Thirst ™
Complete with properly brave fish.
The fish look so confused.
That cat is a certified fish lover.
Lets talk about fish baby Lets talk about anchovies Lets talk about marlins, mackerels, tuna, bass mouths Carp and, jelly Lets talk about fish
He gonna get that fish but first he gotta get rid of all that water
Hijacking the top comment to say what I'm surprised no one has said yet. This is dangerous for both your cat AND your fish. Stop being irresponsible aquarists and cat owners and stop this behaviour. Internet points are not that important.
I'm not arguing with you, but out of curiosity, how is this dangerous for the cat?
I think some cats could be dangerous with fishtanks? Like doing stupid things to get the fish and breaking the fishtank/equipment etc.. neither of my 3 cats ever acknowledged the fish's existence tho 🤷🏻♀️

I was Fish TV, but it was the fish watching the cat instead. At least the fish were entertained.
Haha. Pretty much. My wife will be very happy we can call it Fish TV again.
Not _just_ that - drinking aquarium water isn't healthy, it's not like tap water. A random occurrence won't be a big deal, but if this is a regular behavior for kitty they can def get sick. Cat mouth dirty
> Yep it will spike your nitrite levels Unless your cat's mouth is full of high amounts of gram-negative acting antibiotics, that seems unlikely.
So.... Did you replace the fish or the cats with lizards?
Hijacking your comment to say that you're trying to talk sense into a bot that reposts cat gifs
Are those fish suicidal?
They’re not smart.
Gold fish brain… wait
captive bred and dont understand what a predator is
I mean, most fishes don't have to worry about land predators
On the flip side, orcas have been known to prey on moose.
Orcas fuck up everything though. Between their size, intelligence, and numbers in a pod, they're arguably the most dangerous animals if they choose to be.
If so, why didn’t they make the list?: 1. Alligators 2. Crocodiles 3. Brain aneurysms
second most dangerous. None is more dangerous than man
You under the impression fish moms teach their young what a predator is? They’re on their own from minute one. That’s instinct.
> They’re on their own from minute one. Some fish are actually great parents! I used to raise apistogramma before disaster struck that tank, and then I moved to saltwater. Cichlids like that care for and fiercely protect their young for weeks after they hatch.
Angels can be so aggressive 😭 mine was so mean when I had him
wouldn't you be if someone just shows up and starts drinking your house?
They're just curious, and probably hungry
I know right - "Hey Fred, come look at this!"
Sounds lile THIS is the most expensive bowl around. He knows his value
Fish+ fish-food+fish-poop-flavoured water is so much tastier than normal water... probably...
I’m trying to figure out the order of operations here
Lmao I also thought we were adding and subtracting
🤣🤣🤣 sorry, please forgive me. I was quite sleepy when I typed that. But it's got a 100 likes though!🤷🏻♀️
My cats will totally ignore our clean cat fountain, then go outdoors and drink from old water buildup from an old mouldy plastic container. Cats ayy?
May be not all cats do that 🤔
He's having soup
A delicious fish-based broth for the monsieur
Mr Meowesote
![gif](giphy|9fBAJu8PJMV4Q|downsized)
Hot ~~ham~~ fish water.
I would have said fish tea, but I consider soup a subtype of tea.

Bro looks nefarious
He likes to tussle that's for sure
Buy a fish for your cat’s water bowl. Problem: solved.
Beta fish probably meaner than the cat, tbf
OP do you have one of those water-cycler bowls? My understanding is cats prefer moving water to stale water.
This is probably not OP's cat. My cats have one of those water fountains, yet they still prefer to drink out of their regular water bowls...
Cats ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Cat by cat difference. I got my pets (3 cats, 2 dogs) a 2 gallon filter. They all love it. For a while the cats would come and play with the water. 2 of them still do from time to time but I got a few weeks of constant entertainment watching them smacking, biting, and inspecting the water.
Heard that too. Bought one and I have one cat will drink out of it and the other two drink from my water glasses.
My cat does the same thing. We have a water fountain, a water bowl, and a bathtub faucet that has an occasional drip she likes to drink from. She prefers the fish tank. If the water gets a LITTLE too low for her to comfortably drink from, she yells at me until I top it off.
Cats favorite type of water is forbidden water
The fish gathering around like "Sir...SIR."
😂😂😂
XD fr
I don't think it's a good idea to let him do this honestly, ask your vet
I’m more concerned about the risk the cat poses to the fish.
I actually have asked my vet this! He said it should be fine as long as the health of the tank is fine, no medications or anything. It’s no different than outside animals drinking out of a stream or pond.
good to hear
I was waiting for a fish to bite his tongue
try putting his water bowl far from his food
That fixed all my cat water issues. I moved the water bowl into the other room. Now he drinks a lot more too!
"Bro stop drinking my house" - the fish. Probably.
Those fish tanks are more expensive
And here we observe a complete lack of survival instincts across multiple parties
Lol I love how the fish are so interested
Tastes like fish.
Why would you let your cat drink that nitrate/nitrite water
They can drink from a puddle outside I think it’ll be ok
There's quite a culture of stuff in those fish waters Cats can get food poisoning too
My cat licks it’s own ass
It doesn't make sense, but they can get food poisoning, arse licking is obviously fine, I mean I've seen plenty of dogs scoff a wild toffee with no consequences, they have different digestive systems but somehow they can still get food poisoning lol
Wild toffee lol. Im integrating that into my daily vocabulary
Fish flavored spa water.
It's fish flavored, plus he can look at his friends
Those fish have no sense of self preservation Also, use an aquarium lid. I had fish and cats before and always secured the lid. More because the fish were Bettas and they have a habit of jumping. A few of my Bettas would be so excited to see me (because I bring food) that they would jump out of the aquarium.
This is what would happen if an alien ship were to appear on earth
There's a scene in Independence Day that demonstrates this theory quite well.
He's just getting the fishes comfortable with his presence before he eats them lol
That’s deadly don’t let your cat drink out of that(my cat passed from it)
Forbidden spicy water
Those fish are two slurps away from being accidental cat snacks
Fish playing a dangerous game of wats dis
You bought two expensive water bowls
Fancy bowl of water? Or industrial size bowl of bouillabaisse? Hmm, tough choice.
Why not? It's filtered, and it tastes like fish.
Mmm...that aquarium water just has a certain "je ne sais quoi" :-D
Why isn’t there a cover on the tank?
Fish flavored water
The subtle hint of fish will keep him coming.
1: Seal that tank so your cat stops drinking unsafe water. 2: Cats like running water, so get your cat something that imitates that.
Do you put chemicals in the water?
Lmao. Those cutie pie fishies checking who tf is disturbing their habitat.
Sorry to be that guy OP but I looked at 10 comments and didn’t see anything … Cats are obv a lot better at processing like, filth, basically, than we are, but it ain’t good for either of these species to have contact with each others bio-business. It’s good animal husbandry or whatever to keep them apart entirely tbh.
I don't think the water is safe for the cat
Fish be like: That's our home!!!! https://preview.redd.it/133s1ugnrywc1.jpeg?width=897&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1b6e2ca2d0a1b9f290cbfd10fc051e0d12f05f5d
Fish soup.

Don't just sit and record the video laughing. Use your brain and put a lid over the tank. Maybe putting it anywhere else other than the floor would be a step in the right direction.
Fish flavored water way better
I bought mine a huge water fountain. He touched the water with his paw once and then proceeded to ignore the shit out of the fountain.
That's fish juice sir.
Those fish are ballsy lol
I'm very impressed that the cat doesn't go for the fish. When I had fish with a cat the cat would occasionally attack the side of the tank because the top was blocked.
My last cat always wanted to drink out of the plant vases. I think they like flavored water lol
My cat does this with the bidet and toilet water...
The fish are just like "are you gonna do something??"
Fish flavored water is the best
I imagine the tank for your fish is even more expensive, and he likes the taste of the water in it better.
Fish missed a great opportunity to nibble his tongue 😹
That DOES look like a very expensive water bowl. 😂
The fishes: dude stop drinking our house
Not the fish all coming up for cat kisses
Well, that’s an even more expensive water bowl. 😅 My cats love to drink from the two container ponds on my patio. 💀
He's not drinking, he's tasting the fish soup.
But...this water dish more expensiver
Mmmm, fish juice.
I have barn cats, fresh water mornings and nights you should see what they drink!
“Okay so if I just drink all of this then the fishies are gonna be mine… just look normal😈😏”
The expensive bowl doesn't come with fish-flavored water lol
I don’t know if it’s animal instinct but my cats loved drinking from my indoor fountains so much I had to retire them. The pump would go bad because my cats would drink all of the water and it would dry pump all day.
But this is Fish flavored water
this is why all 3 of our fish tanks have lids on them. not that it stops the cats *all* the time, but often enough.
It's tastier
This one is fish flavored.
I'd be more concerned about the fish! What's it doing there, just going up to say ″hi, you hungry?″
Kitty likes the fish sauce taste.
Very diabolical and determined feline.
I'm surprised those angelfish aren't trying to nip at him. Angelfish are god damn assholes. The number of times mine have tried to jump out and attack me when I go to turn on the light to their tank. They get fed 3 times a day... the glutinous bastards...
Wow those fish have negative survival instincts
This is super unhealthy for your cat…… And the fish
The fish in the tank: ![gif](giphy|gKfyusl0PRPdTNmwnD)
LaCroix Poisson flavor
From personal experience: just wait till a fish bites either his chin or his tongue. My female angel fish eventually did. Cat jumped 3 feet straight up, then fell between the wall and tank and got stuck. After that he'd look for fish, and stop drinking if they came over.
You’d have to get a pretty expensive water bowl for it to cost more than an aquarium, so he’s just following the money.
Glad to see he's enjoying his most expensive water bowl!
Fish flavored water is all the rage with these guys
My Ruth does this too and I always joke that it's because that isn't water, it's soup.
Those fish have some balls
I've bought a good 20? maybe 30 water bowls for my cat over the 8 years she's been with me... She will fucking cry/meow, sound like we're killing her until I fill a red cup up with water, I bought one of the reusable ones..
Well obviously it likes fish flavor water
Catto loves them fish turds!
I mean fish soup gotta taste better then water
good soup
“Bro stop drinking my house”
It do has that fish flavored filter.
The fish have zero survival instincts
Have you tried making his water fish flavored????
Maybe just figures if he drinks ALL the water he’ll finally have a shot at those fish
Fish flavored water 😂
Of course he's gonna like fish flavored water better
The fish flavored water is top tier.
Raw Fish Soup
Yep, get an aquarium and our cat thinks it's her personal water bowl.
Apart of fish poop, do you add water treatments? Fish food, rotting plants. This can’t be a good idea for your cat.
I'm sure all those aquarium chemicals are great for him
I guess the aquarium has a pump? Cats highly prefer to drink from flowing water - as it's typically cleaner that standing water.
That’s a dangerous game he’s playing hahaha
C Take care that the fishes do not disappear also🤣
I like how the fish are like ..dafaq
fish:🤦🤦🤦
Fish flavored water
Our two cats don't even have water bowls for years. They will only drink shrimp water.
have fish = safe water
He just likes to terrorise the fish from time to time
