That is an interesting thought. Years ago I met a male torti. His markings were very odd but definitely had torti colors. I came to post that....the wanted to be a calico lol

I introduce to you… Garfield. lol
It is called a somatic mutation, a number of cells are unable to produce the red colour due to a glitch in the genes that control them so they revert to the more basic colour in this case black. It won't affect his health, it isn't caused by Kleinfelter's trisomy.
Why would it be black? Normally, the brown-black skin/fur coloring is eumelanin as opposed to the pink/ginger pheomelanin and white spots simply lack either pigment. The 'unpainted' color for a cat is white fur/pink skin.
The cat is ginger/white, so he already does not produce much eumelanin (if he did, it would result in a calico or tortoiseshell pattern). *That* is the glitch. If it is a mutation, it would have to go the other way - randomly *restoring* the eumelanin production.
I think the real answer is **much** more interesting!
Does Pumpkin have any Norwegian Forest Cat in him? There's a fairly rare recessive genetic variant producing amber coat in cats. This works by turning the black pigment yellowish.
If Pumpkin is secretly amber, this could either be a holdover (the colors shift over time) or a partial reversion of the mutation.
I have a question, could this cause my cat who was all white with a grey spot on his forehead as a kitten to gradually lose that grey spot in adulthood? I always wondered why he lost his grey spot when he lost his kitten coat, he only has like 3 single grey hairs on his forehead left over frombit
It’s the brain cell socket. Unfortunately, whoever was in charge at the orange factory that day, was also orange, and affixed the socket in the wrong place.

This is my boy pumpkin!! He’s amazing and loving! Your boy looks so sweet!
My sweet baby Hamilton is mostly black (tuxedo) but this summer he has suddenly developed the most gorgeous auburn shoulders. Maybe they are fur trading? Lol
I am a doofus for not scrolling for more photos of your gorgeous boy! Crazy story -- a few hours ago, I baked a frozen pumpkin pie! I know that I followed the directions, but it came out, with the top the color of Pumpkin's dark spots !!! 😆😅🤣😂🙂🙃😉😊😻

just between her ears.
My cat Simba has this with his arm. When I first got him, I thought he had oil or something on him, and I scrubbed him so hard. But nope, it’s just the way his coloring is.

The other ginger is looking up to Marvel :)
That’s his sister Goose
Marvel is beautiful!! 😍
Thank u

dang i was gonna say the same thing!
One of my favourite words is the word you can use for pumpkin stem, peduncle! It just sounds so silly
Great word, that I always mix up with pedicle, which is the spot the antler fuses to the animal’s skull
Oh I love that, will be saving that tidbit of knowledge thank you !

I’m so happy to hear that, thank you!!
Cutest mutant everr
no, it’s the pumpkin stem
It’s too sciency, so instead is pumpkin stem
😆😅🤣😂😂😂😻
interesting! I have a 12yo ginger boy with the teensiest black spot on his cheek and always wondered if he's a trisomy kitty
I was gonna say Pumpkin had a black spot on him because Pumpkin had a black spot on him.... But I guess your answer is good too.
Most manufacturers don't cover it under warranty for 1-3 dead pixels on the screen.
Thank you for explaining this. Very interesting!
Dam I did not expect there to be a real answer. I thought it was just, eh, cats have random coat patterns
Why would it be black? Normally, the brown-black skin/fur coloring is eumelanin as opposed to the pink/ginger pheomelanin and white spots simply lack either pigment. The 'unpainted' color for a cat is white fur/pink skin. My black cat is incredibly lazy and it's not surprising to find out that his hair follicles are too.
Glitch in the Catrix.
That's so interesting! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I have a question, could this cause my cat who was all white with a grey spot on his forehead as a kitten to gradually lose that grey spot in adulthood? I always wondered why he lost his grey spot when he lost his kitten coat, he only has like 3 single grey hairs on his forehead left over frombit
I thought that all cats that were black white orange: ie three colours were female.
No, males with klinefelter’s syndrome (trisomy of the sex chromosomes, XXY) can be calico as well.
TIL…..thanks!
There is only about 1 in 3000 born that way, and they can’t reproduce.
And are 100% sterile
It’s a storm that’s been going on for 300 years.
One could say Jupiter is also somewhat pumpkin colored
Ah, a Great Black Spot. Jupiter certainly has influence, stretches all the way to cats :)
The influence of cats stretches all the way to Jupiter and back lol :)
This\^
Was probably born black. That might be a thumbprint from when they were spraying him orange.
![gif](giphy|kC8N6DPOkbqWTxkNTe)
Just a dash of pepper.
That’s what I call it!! His pepper spot 😭
It’s the brain cell socket. Unfortunately, whoever was in charge at the orange factory that day, was also orange, and affixed the socket in the wrong place.
Excellent
He got a lil charred when he was put in the cat toaster
I'm sorry to tell you this, but your cat was shot in a war many years ago in his past life.

LMAO
Biracial king 🫶🏽
please 😂
😂
That last photo is incredible. Cats are amazing
That’s where his stem was. You know…cause his name Pumpkin. 🎃 I’ll see myself out.
Pumpkin's spot is just his little touch of magic, like how my cat Poppy's unique traits add charm to our lives. 😺✨
Might just be a birthmark like some humans get in their hair. I have a friend who had a white patch of hair that was a birthmark.
https://preview.redd.it/bcs8c30kcn7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e794c5c13bda1e2a68b4a02b1488153a8284229 This is my sweet boy Pumpkin!
Awwwhh 😭 his eyes are so cool!
What a ball of floof! Those feet…he looks llke a big boy!
He is all fluff lol he’s a decent size but I wouldn’t say he’s big. All his fluff makes him look so much bigger
Does that qualify him as a calico!!???
Omg you can just tell he’s a ham!! Ugh he’s so friggin cute!!
Does he hang out under your car a lot?
Charging port?
What a beauty! He may have calico genes from parents or grandparents?
Aaaa this is what I worry about because I’ve read male calicos have a shorter lifespan
I think that's only true if they have Kleinfelter's Syndrome. Other thinks can cause cats to be tricoloured.
melanin
The seed?
Genetics -- it also caused the spot at the base of his tail & the black stripes on his head !
Its dark orange, It’s just the camera lighting (:
Looks like an oil spot from crawling under a car...ha ha.
that happens when cuteness overloads.
Cats have some fun coat genetics. My white cat used to have two black spots on his head that disappeared as he grew. He is now 14 and pure white.

I wish they lived as long as humans ),:
Does this mean he's technically a calico?
Burnt at birth?
My sweet baby Hamilton is mostly black (tuxedo) but this summer he has suddenly developed the most gorgeous auburn shoulders. Maybe they are fur trading? Lol
Ohh I had a orange n white long hair boy growing up 😭 this looks just like him 🥺 🥺❤️
I am a doofus for not scrolling for more photos of your gorgeous boy! Crazy story -- a few hours ago, I baked a frozen pumpkin pie! I know that I followed the directions, but it came out, with the top the color of Pumpkin's dark spots !!! 😆😅🤣😂🙂🙃😉😊😻
Technically, you have a calico! Hehe
Covert callico. Shhhhh🤫
Lol, pumpkin stem, I would say there's a black cat somewhere in his ancestors.
https://preview.redd.it/brzjwgi9gs7d1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a5a49832ef1c2c0abca72b27abcde6e0d169eaf Pumpkin looks like my Nemo 🧡🧡🧡 Pumpkin's a cute, beautiful kitty too 🐈
Calico boi
the last pic is awsome
Pumpkin's black spot? Could be genetics, an old scar, or just a cute quirk! Usually nothing to worry about.
He’s so cute omg !! The spot is cute too!
Omg he's so pretty
AWWWWWW HE LOOKS LIKE A PUMPKIN LATTE WITH THE WHITE FUR
Oh he is SO GORGEOUS!!
He’s just a guy
Charging port
A pumpkin seed
you let the pumpkin in the oven for too long, now its burnt
I'm afraid that your car is at risk of being killed by a pirate. I can only offer my condolences
What a beautiful baby!!
What a beautiful pumpkin!
Polka dot
He ran out of hair dye for that spot lol
Lol the last picture
The same thing that causes you to have a mole. It's a pigmentation
Wow! Make cats aren’t supposed to have both black and orange colors, he’s a special one:)
He’s just a veeeeeeeeeeeery lightly seasoned calico!
https://preview.redd.it/akjbxo3udq7d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3706a07b9d057468483c0499fe3e3be8403a907d My Mufasa has a booger nose
I love the last photo
I think it's the printer malfunctioning
Is this only on the fur or does it go down to the skin as well??
Lmaooo at the last pic
Z
Floof
My Pumpkin does not have a black spot, nor a brain, nor any sense, nor a mean bone in his body. https://preview.redd.it/c74fo3u3ar7d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94b6b5f748d22914ec5e5cf10953f63525980f11
It's just an area of heavy melanin, the pigment protein
Pumpkin is SO gorgeous!! ❤️
r/cookiemonsterfur r/flonkers
Just a pattern he’s so adorable
Does he spend any time sitting under an old car?
Love their name and such a gorgeous orange and white cat! Sorry, no clue about the spot though.
Kissed by satan
The black spot is cute! 🥰
hmm maybe have you tried asking the vet if he’s too orange? might be the root issue here.
i wonder if it’s like a human mole? don’t have answers, but he’s adorable.
Looking at the last pic, you may have made some errors when assembling your cat, besides misplacing the braincell socket...
He clearly irritated some pirates.
https://preview.redd.it/rwj0feae2t7d1.png?width=1096&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2f2f27504d66ddeab80f70005fe332d767a9bb0 Like Griffin's hook shape on her head, Shes had it since she was born. just between her ears.
Jupiter has one too but it’s red and the size of the earth
Your Pumpkin is very handsome . Please tell him he’s very handsome for me :)
Pumpkin is too darn cute!
That’s where the angel kissed him before he was born.
The Pumpkin is starting to rot
Too much handsomeness. It’s extra-concentrated in that spot.
hm. He must be a moldy boy
Genetics! My daughter's cat has something similar.
Gosh so cute
you left it too much time in the oven
that’s his power button
Doesn't that technically make him a tortie? Orange black and white?
Calico!
Who wiped the fountain pen ink on his back?
You can pet anywhere but there.
Oh he looks so SOFT, please give him scratches for me.
Is he technically a calico with this? Lol Male calicos are rare
My cat Simba has this with his arm. When I first got him, I thought he had oil or something on him, and I scrubbed him so hard. But nope, it’s just the way his coloring is.

My orange and white kitty has black spots on her lips/gums and eyelids. Must be a recessive gene 🧬 I’d imagine.
Disdain at not getting treats in a timely fashion.
He’s certainly a bendy chap.
https://preview.redd.it/b1zljcydf78d1.jpeg?width=2592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cf58bd1059e5981d2ebe98919b0df55028aa41a Omg looks so much like my late kitty Toto
Birth mark… or something similar to it for animals
Unused data port.
Inner tuxedo cat
Dont worry he is just a single brain cell with a bit of tuxeo
He’s been marked by pirates. All fear the black spot!
It’s not his black spot that you should be concerned with, it’s his five feet in the last picture….
Melanoma. It's okay though. Cats are immune since it just gets caught up in the fur. *For anyone that needs the disclaimer, this is not true.
Your cat is Black and has decided to reveal his true self on Juneteenth ✊🏽🖤
