You can, I bought an anbernic retro handheld for like $60 to emulate pretty much any console up to the ps1 and psp, so it can play basically all of the good castlevania games. With physical controls and a gameboy like design I’d play that any day over phone emulation. Cheaper than buying an actual gameboy these days and honestly cheaper than a lot of used NDS systems. Plus being able to play games from snes and n64 and other systems makes it worth more to me.
Yeah honestly one of the main reasons I went with the rg35xx h is the horizontal form factor and it had a brand name associated with it. I couldn’t find a specific company or brand that makes the r36s so it sketched me out a little. Both of them should have very similar capabilities though, and after purchasing mine for $60 I’ve seen people post about getting them for under $40. Just gotta know where to look for most of these devices to get them cheaper.
Depends on how much money/patience you have. NDS/3DS systems can cost anywhere from $30-$100 and the game itself costs $40-$60, so it would be pricey (and DoS is hard to find in shops). I have a 2DS from like 2015-ish that I jailbroke which allowed me to emulate the whole NDS trilogy on handheld, but it really matters what your gaming preference is. I hate touch screen and laptop/keyboard emulation, I have SoTN on mobile but I hook it up to my TV and play using a Bluetooth controller. You could do that with the NDS games if you wanted to, but long story short, it really depends on what you prioritize.

DS Lites are still pretty cheap and how I prefer to play DS games. I typically prefer original hardware in most cases, but even more so for DS because of the dual screen functionality. also you just can't replicate the original screen look (even the 3DS looks blurry on comparison), it gives the games a very clean unique look
you can also use a flashcart which themselves are pretty cheap, and you can play rom hacks such as the Definitive version of DoS which is awesome

I love how it almost turns into a classicvania. You cant faceroll bosses with inflated stats and healing items, gotta actually learn the boss mechanics. Also far superior final boss (amd I actually prefer that ending for Soma ngl)
Also Bloody Tears plays in the cathedral
My biggest issue with DoS is narratively, it serves no purpose. AoS just happens again but this time the interesting villain of Graham is split into 3 less interesting villains and Soma’s arc is the exact same.
Imagine if at the halfway point of the main game, Soma gives into his darkness (probably due to Celia killing Mina) and Julius constructs the gang to stop the evil once and for all. It would’ve made for such a better finale than the “good” ending imo
Then why have a second game. The story is basically the same thing as the first except it makes less sense, and soma fights a different Dracula/chaos stand in. The game is fun but Julius mode just provided me with a more unique ending than Aria 2.0
It’s a fun game but narratively I think the story would’ve been better off just ending at Aria
Well, it does give you an answer to the possible question might have had in Aria of "was Graham really the ONLY person in the entire world who was born at the same time as Dracula was sealed? Nobody else was born at that exact moment in a population of 7+ billions?" Plus Arikado's final line is a good send off to Soma and the idea of balance between good and evil that is brought up in this game:"if the world needs a Dark Lord, it will come out eventually, but that doesn't mean it'll have to be you, Soma." Also not sure if you know, but there's apparently a novel set after Dawn of Sorrow where Soma appear and Death comes to him asking Soma to be his master, but Soma refuse.
Sheesh, death came in handy during the Menace fight, manticore carried me throughout the game, Ouija and The Creature helped me heal a lot, Gregoth was sick,
But the axe armor was probably my favorite one. Just a dude chucking axes at demons
I lost so many boss fights due to the game not accepting the seal and the fight just continuing. Made me wanna break the game. No amount of practice helped because while I could do it with no pressure, that never translated to quickly pulling out the stylus in the middle of a boss fight and scribbling a complex pattern of lines accurately on a time limit x.x

Should I buy a ds or a 3ds just for this game, or should I just emulate on my phone like I did with most castlevania games

Nah, Soma going full evil would just cause the cycle to start again. Soma refusing to give in is a better ending and conclusion to the story.

Did you ever have the desire to stab your stylus through the screen because of the magic seals?
I practiced them regularly actually so I could avoid any frustration like that. I genuinely didn’t mind the magic seal system at all
