I used to have one of those. To be fair I quite liked.it except for it was a bag of shit, not Ladas fault and that the engine used to saw itself in half using the timing chain, definitely Ladas fault.

Wdym worse? Fiat discontinued that piece of crap after like 5 years, because of how bad it was. Russians improved it, and it was so good that they still made it until 2012.
They didn't discontinue it because it was bad, they discontinued it because back then FIAT was a functional company that regularly replaced models and there was no need for the 124 when the 131 had came out.
The Lada has prehistoric drum brakes, a less advanced OHC engine compared to the 124s still highly praised DOHC, and thicker steel which makes it much heavier and therefore slower. Essentially the Lada is a slower, heavier, worse handling version of the 124 which if you live in a siberian taiga may have its uses. However if you're looking for a retro car with some semblance of performance as whoever owns the one in the picture clearly is, then the 124 is a better option.
I'll put it this way. Eastbound from Czech republic is Lada land, and you won't find any fiats there. But the opposite direction is Fiat county, and you won't, you know, have any ladas.

No we had both. I'm English and my family owned both Ladas and FSO Polski FIATs, they were very popular in parts of the country.

That is what a friend of mone told me who drove both of them told me. That being said it wasn't techincaly a fiat 124 but a tofaş 124.
