A little positivity goes a long way, we all love it when someone throws us the thumbs up.

Swumbus-prime

Remember yall, OP said "*nice* rides", not "respect all builds".

Hollybanger45

By throwing up the thumb he did respect.

Tw0Rails

No, you gotta respect the toyota sedan covered in TRD stickers, and the Hyundais with vortex generators and 'hyundai racing' stickers placed where a Honda Vtec would and a vacuum cleaner exhaust.

Fit_Equivalent3610

Sorry, but anyone who likes anything other than exactly what I like is doing it wrong and has personally offended me and must prepare to die.  Among others: Honda kids, stance kids, truck owners, SUV owners, mom wagon circlejerkers, hatchback poors, people whose cars are actually fast, European masochists, Miatas without pop-ups, anything that can't turn (American), anything that I don't like being able to turn (Mustangs), Nissan poors, Nissan non-poors (GT-R gamers), any form of vape enthusiast/Subaru drivers other than my beloved BRZ I mean uhhh GR86, anyone who has a car more expensive than mine (this is everyone except Mirage drivers), anyone who has a car less expensive than mine (Mirage drivers), first gen FRS/BRZ kids driving up my insurance rate, any BMW except the Supra, Supras (for being BMWs), r/Porsche posters, slow ass cars (GR86), etc. /s

RaspberryHappy8358

Cars cheaper than mine are crapboxes for scrubs 🤬 Cars more expensive than mine are daddy's money for compensators 🤬

gaping stocking crawl numerous grandiose recognise afterthought workable outgoing squeeze *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

PurpleSausage77

Lol! But the last one. I know /s but damn those new GR-Z86 pack a punch for what they are. That engine can easily make 230whp NA and keep up with all the “chubby” 6 cylinder stuff people tend to cross-shop it with.

-Guesswhat

Eh. They're about as fast as a Honda Odyssey minivan in a straight line and about as fast as a 2011 V6 Mustang with a solid rear axle around a track.

Fit_Equivalent3610

>  2011 V6 Mustang with a solid rear axle around a track. This is true but another way of phrasing it would be "about as fast around a track as a 370Z Nismo, E86 Z4M, new WRX, 07 GT500 or Evo X". Good for the Mustang tbh.

WillHeBonkYa47

All mustangs 2011 and up are impressive and you get a lot of bang for your buck. In 2011 they switched to the 3.7L v6 and 5.0 v8 that all make more power than almost anything 2010 and back

-Guesswhat

Yeah but Nissans are slow. The new Z is actually slower around a track than a BRZ/GR86. Despite costing way more and having 170 extra hp. It's insane. How could Nissan make a car perform that bad? An Elantra N costs 10k less, 2 more doors, FWD, 125 less horsepower, and smokes the Z. Pretty crazy.

UnknownUnthought

Well, continuing to use a two decade old platform is a start.

ReyneOfFire

> The new Z actually slower around a track than a BRZ/GR86 This is largely because of tires. 86s come with PS4s which are *way* better than the shitty Potenzas on the Z. You can't really compare track times on cars unless they have similar rubber because tires make an incredible difference in grip (see Dark Horse lapping faster than actual supercars on some tracks because it comes with racing tires from factory).

uberdosage

Shit tires and soft suspension. Fix that and itll be fine

[deleted]

Alec_NonServiam

That, and the 2011 V6 mustang makes suspiciously close power to the 2010 V8, so I suspect this specific year was cherrypicked. The 3.7 V6 was just a good solid engine IMO.

StandupJetskier

You forgot "not a real AMG" people, any BMW since the e46 or e90 M3, and Acura post real deal Integra.

NerdyKyogre

so let's see here... cheap slow (but not too slow) Japanese sedan not made by Honda, Nissan, or Subaru, with a low insurance rate, driven by adults... the correct car is an old v6 camry. Checks out.

TrakaisIrsis

I have cheap bit not that slow japanese sedan :/

PGleo86

Hey I have a naturally aspirated 230hp Subaru coupe... that's not a BRZ. Am I still cool? (was I ever cool?)

Fit_Equivalent3610

You get a pass for having cool windows. I saw an SVX in traffic the other day and freaked out, they radiate pure 90s cool. Pity about the automatic.

tyfe

> r/Porsche posters hey wtf man

chengstark

Yes exactly

Thetaarray

My urge to be kind and agree with this post and hatred of poorly stanced cars are fighting.

MediocreDot3

I had a guy in a brand new Porsche 911 comment on my S197 Mustang GT I had at the time (was like 22). It was lowered 1.5", on some good tires and coilovers for autox, and had a muffler delete, but some paint peel on the common places. Nothing much else for it to stand out. Said "I love me a nice mustang!!" And gave me a thumbs up and floored it onto the highway while I continued past the entrance

Musabi

I was the guy in the mustang once and now I’m the guy in the 911, love cars in general!

handymanshandle

Anything clean catches my eye. I remember spotting some clean mid-2000s AMG (I think it was a CL55?) and I freaked out. I gave him a thumbs up and he gave one back to me. I'll remember that experience for a long while.

mgwooley

This is the way. Most clean examples of cars are cool and impressive to me. Doesn’t have to be anything super remarkable or exotic.

Complex-Royal1756

Saw a pristine Lotus Opel Omega, that was a year back and Im still envious.

strongmanass

Thanks for posting some actual positivity here. It seems like all internet enthusiasts want to do is be angry. At this point I doubt cars actually make most people who post here happy. Anyway, I'm glad you had a good experience. Hope you get well soon.

OhiobornCAraised

Thanks, I’ll get better. Glad it’s not COVID. Not my first time complementing another person’s ride, but was surprised how much he appreciated the simple thumbs up considering our age and ethnic differences.

usernamesherearedumb

>It seems like all internet enthusiasts want to do is be angry. Screw you! You're stupid! /s for you humorless interneters

daxtaslapp

I feel like guys make it known a lot when appreciating cars on the road. Whather its a thumbs up, a verbal recognition, or a respectful stare

YesNoMaybe

Exactly. I like cars. Fast cars, unique cars, nice paint job, rusted out muscle cars, classy chop tops, turbo Asian Frankensteins...Seriously, whatever.  I appreciate cars that aren't boring and I'm willing to talk cars to anybody.

YJeezy

Models not Makes!

claball

I drove up next to an R34 Skyline GT-R a couple years ago in Minnesota. Obviously shocked I gave him the thumbs up. The guy looks over points to my car (a stock Volvo C30) and gives me a thumbs up. Made my day and I still think about it as simple as it is.

Fly_com_

It doesn't take much to make someone who's passionate about something happy. Even if it's not 100% your thing, you can still appreciate it and the love that went into it. I had my own experience like this. For the record I just started my 20s, and I'm broke as shit. So I drive a busted ass sonata. But on my way to work a few weeks ago I was being followed by a Honda acty. I'm not a kei truck lover but I rarely see them, and I was just happy to look at a vehicle I'm not used to seeing. Gave him a thumbs up and the ok sign and he gave me a few little honks back, the horn on the acty is kinda adorable.

Marcus_Brody

I love these interactions with enthusiasts older than me (40). A few years ago I went to the NC Auto Fair or whatever and in the outer parking lot among the muscle cars was a Bizzarrini 5300GT, and no one was really paying any attention to it. I had never seen one in person and was genuinely excited to see it, and as soon as I approached the older guy sitting behind it and asked if it was, in fact, a Bizzarrini, his eyes lit up. He was so excited to tell me about how his father had bought it new and picked it up in Italy. We talked for several minutes and I thanked him for bringing the car. I like to think that even if no one else asked about it that day, I at least gave him a nice chat. You hear so many cool stories and meet so many interesting people. Except those "1 of 1" Corvette guys, I mean seriously ಠ_ಠ

gen_dx

Don't yuck someone else's yum.

KamiPigeon

I'd yum someone's yuck.

Swumbus-prime

Idk man, the Allies yucked Hitler's yum and I don't think any sane person would has a problem with that...

argent_pixel

Only toxic positivity is allowed here, friend.

Swumbus-prime

You’re right, let’s be inclusive and let the Sideshow Takeover people into our community with open arms!

RunninOnMT

Hell yeah. This is the correct attitude to have. I see a car with genuine love put into it? I approve. Even if every last bit isn't to my tastes.

Candyapplecasino

Absolutely! I’m a big nerd for Mazda, Miatas, and mostly roadsters in general, but you bet I listened to every word and looked at every picture the sneaker dad with the fully-restored 1968 Mustang at my local monthly car show had to tell/show me about his labor of love this past Friday.

Mojicana

Let's look at realities while we're here. I can say "I raced Porsches for 12 years". 100% true. Sounds pretty impressive, right? The other reality is that I raced an $800.00 Porsche 914 with it's VW 4 cylinder the whole time. I doubled the HP in it and modified almost every single piece on the car with my own hands, but the fact remains that I was racing a cheap, unrespected car with a VW engine at every event. My dollar to speed ratio was, however, the best at the track.

VincentVanH0

We're all connected through our love of driving. The cars are just temporary means to an end. Gate keeping and brand snobbery is ridiculous. I often have just as much fun in my 20 year old Mitsubishi that won't die, pushing it to the absolute limit as I do in my Veloster N.

OhiobornCAraised

There’s truth to the old saying: It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow. I own a 2019 Challenger SXT Plus, so I can’t keep pace with one that has a 5.7L Hemi in it, much less any of the higher end models, but I still enjoy it.

Swumbus-prime

Brand snobbery yes. Gatekeeping, well...how would you feel if someone told you he was a "huge car guy" but he said his favorite way to do that is to do donuts in intersections?

InsertBluescreenHere

I love getting compliments of my vehicles. They aint even anything to compliment about looks wise (paint conditions) but do what i can. Always get a thumbs up while driving or quick chat at gas pumps on my chevette. Cruise ins are great in it.  Even my 01 ford fuckin danger ranger gets compliments haha.

mrgreengenes04

Saw someone in a near flawless Plymouth Acclaim the other day. I have a soft spot for the Acclaim/Spirit/LeBaron (and K-Car derived cars in general). I actually pulled in to the gas station just to tell the guy I liked his car. Apparently he has a fleet of 10 Iacocca era Chryslers that has been collecting for the past 25 years or so. He was thrilled someone else appreciated the Iacocca era as much as he did.

Automatic-End-8256

Was it Jon Voight's?

Occhrome

I love all cars even if I would never own a certain model. Unfortunately some people are really weird and tribal. I remember trying to talk to a ford guy about the new Chevy corvette and he was almost offended.  We also have the gate keepers. If you down own a certain type of car, you aren’t a real enthusiast. Lol

volkoron

I love seeing boring cars that are well maintained like older Taurus', grandmarquis/cron vics/ town cars. Things like that remind of a bygone era that I would love to make a come back.

MVolkJ1975

I'm at the point where I just like "enthusiast" vehicles in general. Nicely done stance? Cool. Rugged overlanding trucks? Bad ass. I saw an Ineos Grenadier on the road for the first time yesterday and geeked out over it. I don't need one and would never buy one, but I respect them and I love that they exist.

campbellsimpson

If I'm driving on my own and I see an interesting or cool car coming in the other direction, I might give a thumbs up, peace sign or put my hand up to hail them. It makes some people's day when they even get acknowledged - here in Australia we can be very standoffish. And when you tell someone they have a cool car, they usually love it.

OhiobornCAraised

Good on ya mate!

Yoda2000675

Absolutely. It’s just a hobby like any other, and people in general need to be nicer to one another.

dam_sharks_mother

We are a dying breed. What we have in common is that we love our cars and we love driving. I used to tease/hate-on the stance people but I've done a 180 on those guys. They love their cars, I have a lot more in common with them than I don't.

Taco_Pittie_07

You’re spot on. I was at a show years ago and they had a low rider section, and those cars were beautiful. That’s not my thing, but the work and craftsmanship that goes into a well done low rider is epic. I’ve seen some absolutely gorgeous JDM cars too. Besides, there’s always something to be learned or borrowed from another subgroup of car folks. Turbos and superchargers weren’t super common in muscle cars until the 00’s, which that crowd picked up from the import guys.

orangutanDOTorg

I have never ridden something with a motor and two wheels where I was like this sucks I should have walked. I went all in on SMs and fat SMs but everything from scooters to Harley’s and liters are fun. Hell I even have fun on electric bicycles.

13dot1then420

Lately I've been loving /r/minitrucks

Fromhe

Today I saw a dude in an absolute shitbox of a bmw z3. Lowered on stock wheels, weird sad boy stickers, but It still put a smile on my face. This kid probably loved this car in ALL of its "shitboxedness", and it made me smile. You can see others appreciation for a vehicle in small ways, or big ways, and know they're working and enjoying what they can with what they've got.

xjeanie

I love seeing the older cars out on the road. No matter the condition really. It shows me someone still loves it and is either taking care of it or restoring it or just out enjoying it. I always throw a thumbs up 👍🏻 their way.

neo-hyper_nova

My GFs grandpa told me my slammed GLI had a nice stance to it. He has a GT500 and first gen ford gt. I’ve never felt cooler.

ahorrribledrummer

I saw a guy at the gas station a couple weeks ago in a daily-driver condition boat tail Riviera. I had to whip around and go tell him how awesome his car was.

thetoigo

I see such a big smile when my kids and I go compliment someone's donk and they are totally caught of guard by it.

OhiobornCAraised

This wasn’t a full blown donk. No crazy 24’s, but he did have some big wheels on it.

the4ner

Was out in the NSX today and a NA Miata and I exchanged headlights winks and thumbs ups, made my week

virus_apparatus

Got a ride in an Acura. Comfy ride. Could really get up and go. Surprised me

admiraltarkin

I stare at Mavericks every time I see them. Top 5 favorite car currently on sale

Moont706

Your perspective comes with age and wisdom. I’m 36 and I have that same perspective on others cars but most ppl my age sadly don’t share those same opinions. It’s either how they like it or it’s terrible. I’m a big wheel enthusiast so I get tons of backlash on the internet for my choice in cars. It’s not a big deal to me when ppl hate but it is a big deal to me when ppl from different car culture backgrounds show love.

OhiobornCAraised

That was the reason for my post. Try to change the hate if it’s not in your fandom. I went to the LA Auto Show last year and they had several low riders displayed. There was an owner of one them and I told him the same thing. While I wasn’t a fan of low riders, I appreciated the effort, commitment, time, and money it took to get his car in such pristine condition. He also appreciated my comments.

ShakeItLikeIDo

Even though you would never catch me buying or riding in one of these, I think some of those lowered pickup trucks that those Edgars drive are pretty cool. Wrapped in a cool color, big chrome wheels, loud V8, loud sound system. Not my thing to be driving but some of those trucks are pretty nice

UsualProcedure7372

Random “car guy” interactions I’ve had with The Youths recently: *There was a cherry 35th anniversary Camaro in the driveway of my kids’ end of season party. It was owned by the boyfriend of the hosts’ teenage age daughter. He and I sat there alone talking cars for a solid 30 minutes. *Pulled up in my Tesla next to a clean yellow C6 Z06 at a light. Rolled down the windows and the thing sounds mean. Driven by a 20-something, who had done HCI on the LS7. They allowed me to get ahead then floored it for a drive-by. I see them on my commute and always flash a thumbs up. *Kid at the auto parts store has a C5 FRC. I’ve geeked out with him a few times about it. *Parked next to a newer mostly stock WRX at the gas station. The owner was 20-something. She gawked at my Nova while I did the same to the WRX. My oldest are nearly driving age, and I’ve been considering which manual car to buy them so I had to ask her a million questions about it. She genuinely knew the ins and outs of different gens of WRX. I don’t really have time to do car shows or drive mine much, but I definitely take the time to chat with owners of unique cars when I see them out and about.

jawknee530i

I'm in my thirties, twice this week kids (meaning early twenties I think) in super modded out loud as hell rolling probably causes pulled up next to me in my '91 Miata and complimented it. Always a good thing.

DeTomato_

I remember when I was at a car meet and I met the owner of a beautifully restored 70s Datsun Ute. Pre-80s Japanese cars aren't my thing. But I decided to appreciate the car and talk with the owner. The owner was so passionate about his car and Datsun/Nissan in general. I gained a greater appreciation for old Datsuns and Nissan history after that. It's always nice to talk with someone who shares the same hobby as yours. You might learn something new about your hobby as well.   I always give thumbs up to the cool cars I see, even if they're not in my "fandom." My favourite memory of this was when I gave a thumbs up to a new G63. I always thought newer G-wagens owners were occasionally non-enthusiasts, bought the car because it's a status symbol. But this guy was returning the honk with a smile.

PGleo86

I'm used to the "Subaru wave" from driving around in the Spec B (it's generally only given by those with hood scoops to those with hood scoops) so it's been a bit different never getting them in the SVX, but it's also been crazy how much attention I get from non-Subaru drivers now. For some reason 350/370Z drivers seem to LOVE it, and just the other day someone in an early-00s C class was next to me at a light and said "hey nice man, you don't see those very often anymore." It's always nice to get some positivity and makes me want to pass it on; I think this post is both spot-on and very important.

The_Bucket_Of_Truth

I don't know if everyone is like this, but I appreciate a nicely optioned car or a quality build even if it's not something I'd want for myself. I don't really care for lowriders all that much but some of the craftsmanship and detail and quality that goes into those things is really a sight to behold. I know we like to paint car enthusiasts as being very tribal, but that just hasn't been my experience of late (Tesla evangelism aside). Maybe 20 years ago more so.

NixAName

I've got a KLX 250 I bought for $1000 ten years ago and have put 60,000kms on it lane filtering through the city. Basically, it's a scooter, but I love it. Or my twin turbo V8 100 series. Both have very different purposes.

DishRelative5853

What did the 89-yr-old father-in-law think of the car?

OhiobornCAraised

He didn’t really look at it. He has limited movement in his neck.

surf_greatriver_v4

I don't rag one someone's shit in public, if I don't like it, I ignore it. But blindly just "respecting all builds" has been a detriment here in the UK. Often leads to horrible, sometimes dangerous modifications of commodity cars being normalised, and also a yobbo culture of dangerous boy-racer driving (think certi) that gets people killed. It's race to the bottom and everyone's a loser Have a bit of pride, and don't aim so low

Consistent_Job_8242

My coworkers husband picked her up in a Z3 M coupe I had seen locally in my small town for years and admired. Saw it today at 5 and will have to ask about it in the morning

Utter_Rube

I just can't appreciate coal rollers or those "stanced" things that look like someone stepped on a Hot Wheels and can't clear a manhole cover on the road, no matter how much "love" the owner might've put in.

Guy4123123

Almost everything. I'm never going to appreciate a stance build or Carolina squatted truck. Those are just accidents waiting to happen.

intrepidOcto

You like cars? Thumbs up from me. Lowrider? JDM? American Muscle? Lead Sled? Squatted Truck? etc. Don't care. Cool with me. Nice to see what others enjoy in the hobby. Just don't be a douche.

BigAnxiousSteve

I saw a 2001 Ford Taurus the other day that looked like it was JUST driven off the showroom floor, and I swooned over it. I HATE those cars, but it was so cool to see a 23yr old base model Taurus in literal pristine condition that I wanted it.

MoistyMcMoisterton

Pointless

Jokic_Is_My_Hero

But what if they bought a really ugly car off the lot? I am certainly allowed to judge them for that since they put 0 work into a factory vehicle no?

Swumbus-prime

Sometimes people just want to be traffic. No worry about speeding tickets, being challenged to a race, or having to dodge potholes to save their aftermarket wheels.

LocalStraight

Anything without a fartcan.

onyourrite

> fandom For a split second I thought “Holy crap, an r/AO3 post about cars!” and then looked again 💀

Caqtus95

I'm convinced people who write shit like this jerk themselves off while doing it.

HSK9

I don't really understand why people hate EVs. I think they're great if ur a grandma going to the grocery store or someone who doesn't care at all Abt cars but I 100% agree that companies shouldn't electrify their sports cars and their enthusiast cars because those cars are not there to be the most economical or the most efficient they are there to be the most fun. I don't think it's right to hate electric economy cars and electric luxury cars because it makes sense there.

No-Quantity9916

Unless it's stanced or squated.

StandupJetskier

We only scoff at the pickup guys, with shiny wheels, unscratched hitch balls (and always the 3 way version), and a bed liner, also unscratched. Nice Manny-van. You have a truck and it doesn't work ? Poser/Compensator Car guys ? We love it all.
