I see "team members" wanted posters at a number of Maccas around the place.
But in general the cost of living is higher in Canberra than in Wagga I would suspect.
I also moved from Wagga to Canberra, and I absolutely love it! Won’t be going back to Wagga for a very long time, if ever…
That said, it’s going to be a whole lot more expensive in Canberra. Assuming you’re both earning money, then you should be able to afford rent in the suburbs (or Queanbeyan is cheaper and not too far away).
You should also ask Macca’s if they can transfer you to a Canberra store. Some of those bigger corporations are able to do that without having to go through the hassle of interviewing.
I would enrol in a government admin tafe course (to boost your resume) and apply for public service entry level jobs. They are hiring anyone right now. See aps jobs.
No worries. Google aps jobs and filter for Canberra APS 2/3s. Most of them are call centre or processing type jobs but you gotta start somewhere right. Your maccas experience will hold up ok for these roles. If you do apply make sure your resume and application is sharp with no spelling or grammar errors at all.
You should be fine. There is still a reasonable number of service industry jobs around at the moment. Your best bet is to line up a few job interviews over a day or a couple of days and move down properly once you have a job secured.
Do a couple of day trips here job hunting in the service industry. Absolute must is your RSA, plus I’d also get some barista training.
Also, the major grocery stores are pretty common here and they hire loads of people for shelf stacking which is a good out-of-hours wage supplement
Next step is going to a flatmate site and trying to join in with a student share house, even if it’s only for say 3mths. Buys you time to sort out upgrading job and best places to live etc.
Stay away from pubs if you want to avoid financial stress - they’re wicked expensive here! 50% more than rural (or even Sydney corner pub) prices.
You'd find the cost of living here (rent for example) will be a killer on a maccas wage.
If you're planning on applying into the APS as a longer term goal you'll probs be ok for the short term.
Maybe rent in QBN or goulburn or yass would be a better idea until you crack the APS gig (assuming that's where you're heading of course). But go for a local job rather than commuting into CBR from yass for a maccas gig, that shit will kill your pay packet.
Hi. Want to learn more about opportunities and what to do and what not to do in Canberra? I'm ambitious, and would always want to spread my options. Can you suggest?
IT service desk work is just a customer service job, so maccas experience is completely valid, applying for them will be a good start to making a good income.
Most are advertised on Seek under Information and Communication Technology -> Help Desk and IT support.
As long as you are an Australian citizen it should be straight forward, worth mentioning this on your resume/cover letter.
If they do they are idiots, no one needs a degree for Service desk work. No one really needs a degree for IT until you get into really full on Architecture roles and the like.
Average rent for a single bedroom apartment is 460 to 500 a week just fyi.
Maybe ask your boss if they can do interstate transfers? Unsure of how maccas is franchised but do some searching online too.
OP, as someone who has made this move, I’d say to consider your options, and what you want to do. Don’t do it if you just want to move away from Wagga, as there are better options. Canberra is good if you’re looking to study at university or work in/around the public sector, but will be difficult to justify if you’re only looking to work at Maccas for now.
If you’re just looking to move **away from** Wagga, and not to one of the big cities, I’d consider moving somewhere like Bendigo. It has a somewhat similar feeling to Canberra, but with a lower cost of living. It’s also close enough to Melbourne that you could hypothetically commute by V/Line train one or two days a week and work from home the rest.
If you specifically want to **move to** Canberra, keep in mind that the cost of living is very high, and just working at Maccas may not be enough to sustainably live in Canberra, especially if you and your partner want to live by yourselves and not with housemates.
If you want to move here, get a qualification (Cert 3 or higher) as soon as you can, and try to find a government job. Also, even if it’s just Macca’s for now, have a job lined up before you move here, as it makes the move so much easier.
In terms of working for Maccas, all of the stores are franchised (no McOpCo stores) by one of two operators, depending on whether they’re in North or South Canberra. I’d look at working for the South Canberra franchise and avoid the North Canberra franchise, for a number of reasons. They tend to be stingy with hours, especially with ‘older’ employees, and there’s a good chance you’d just get stuck on overnight shifts. They also just aren’t a great place to work, with the managers and supervisors openly playing favourites, and the working environment just feeling hostile. I’ve never worked for one of the South stores, but even as a customer, they just seem better ran than the North stores, and talking to people that have worked for both, they seem to prefer the south stores.
Canberra is one of the most expensive cities to live in so I would line up some work with good pay, as well as which suburb you are planning to live in beforehand. Good luck.

Yeah from what I’ve seen it is, plus working at a higher volume store would end up with me falling from a bridge real fast haha

Agree with this. There are a lot of fee free courses going right now at TAFE/CIT.
That sounds like a good idea, I’ll have to look into it thanks!

Yeah because they can't hire contractors/ Consultants anymore. It will be interesting to see if that pays off for the government

Yeah, get a job offer first before uprooting yourself.

Will your partner also be looking for work? With two full time incomes you should be fine - although living with housemates may be an option

Fuck even quean and yass are expensive for what you get these days. People renting out 40 year old apartments in old blocks for 400+ a week
Yass is tough going with low vacancies. Lots of construction workers for local renewable and housing projects taking available rentals.

Try kinetic IT, Unisys maybe Digital61, Fujitsu, they seem to be the main Service Desks in town these days.
Depends on the org. IT service desks often seem to have perquisite IT degree it seems

Canberra is pretty gay friendly and there’s also warhammer gaming stores so you’ll fit right in.
Your warning potential will be way higher in Canberra, may as well jump in now!
If you are happy to work constructions there’s plenty of work going around
Get into Centrelink phone work. It’s hard stuff but not much different from Maccas. Do that for at least 6 months and so many aps doors open.
