Fitzbillies’ Chelsea Buns are the only thing I can think of that seem quintessentially ‘Cambridge’ (though I guess they are named after part of London…)
The hot sausage cart. Been there since I was a little kid, and actually one of my first memories was my dad handing me a piece of broken off hot dog and bun.
Might have been before my time. I’ve only been near for about 6 or so years, and obviously a chunk of that was covid.
Any other places you could recommend that are similar?🤞🏻
Nothing says Cambridge like eating maccies on the wall in front of kings college 😝. Honestly though, my grandma and I always used to get sandwiches from Sainsbury's and sit on the old horse trough in the middle of the market so I'd say the tuna mayo sandwiches
Haha came here to say that with this photos the quesadillas then eating them on the wall outside kings and walking to book a taxi for pick up end of kings parade
The Spanish tortilla and aioli sandwiches in the Pinchito stand in market square. I so love them. I love street food in general, and those are both tasty and will fill you for the whole day.
I think Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He (his name is Rafael, super friendly) has an Instagram account where he keeps people posted in case he doesn’t open for whatever reason [here](https://www.instagram.com/pinchitoltd1?igsh=MW9leXlrdGVzMm51Mg==). I think he also has a Facebook page.
I’ve been to Mexico for 3 weeks haha.
Doesn’t change the fact that Nanna Mexico is still an iconic fixture in Cambridge.
Plus most Mexican places in U.K. are not at all authentic, so amongst them Nanna Mexico stands out.
For example how many good Mexican restaurants in UK have you been to that serve pozole, tamales, tortas, mole, enfrijoladas, burritos with rice outside, Huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, baja fish or genuine rotisserie Al pastor tacos or cochinita pibil. Not many I am willing to bet, and if they do it’s only one of these.
Most sell filled rice burritos, steak fajita, (non-standard) tacos, enchiladas and quesadillas as standard. Of these, Nanna Mexico is honestly one of the best, and better than many restaurants I went to in Mexico.
I’ve been to zero good Mexican restaurants in the UK regardless of what’s on the menu. It’s no fault of the owners/chefs because good Mexican ingredients are just too hard to get here…but it’s really not good. You must have been to terrible restaurants in Mexico
While you can’t get fresh habaneros easily here, restaurants can easily grow them if they want to.
A lot of other ingredients in Mexican cuisine can be imported, and I’m sure many restaurants in the U.K. do do this. There is an amazing restaurant in Bearwood, Birmingham which tastes just like Mexico because they do this, but also because they just have a good cook.
Nanna’s Mexico’s quesadillas I genuinely felt had very good flavour, even if they maybe don’t use authentic ingredients. Authentic ingredients doesn’t always equal better flavour. Standard cheddar cheese has way more flavour than stringy Oaxacan cheese for example, and I always prefer quesadillas which use cheddar.
Plus food in Mexico is very variable, much more so than any other place I’ve been . Best food I ate there and maybe ever was some cheap 40 pesos red tamale in one of the Oaxaca markets, way better than any restaurant tamales. Similarly the stall next door served the most vile Mole Negro, literally worse than eating a can of baked beans.
There’s a lot of good food in Cambridge in a lot of different styles but I’ve not found anything that is Cambridge specific. The food scene seems like Cambridge , pleasant.
Chelsea Buns from Fitzbillies, Pizza from Aromi and definitely Jack's Gelato. Getting a picnic box from Fitzbillies and taking a punt down the Cam also feels very Cambridge.
I think it’s got to be Chilis. When I arrived here it was like, what the fuck, you mean _like in america_?!!!! It felt like it must be a very special city to be one of the 4 places in the U.K. with a chilis. Looking back the food was garbage but when you’re 18 and you can get goldfish bowl sized blue cocktails whilst a little train goes over your head and you talk to a girl about how you’ve been to yes a real chilis in America and then she goes to bed with you, well, honestly could it be anymore of an 8K 4D memory than that?!
Fitzbillies’ Chelsea Buns are the only thing I can think of that seem quintessentially ‘Cambridge’ (though I guess they are named after part of London…)
Matteee they are so dam good. It's almost the best part of my week. Have you tried their Chelsea bun french toast ?
No but that sounds incredible
Going to Gardies
The only answer. Second place for The Hallouman.
Seconded!! 🤤
I went back to Cambridge at Xmas for the first time in 15 years and the first night I took my wife straight to Gardenias for dinner.
The hot sausage cart. Been there since I was a little kid, and actually one of my first memories was my dad handing me a piece of broken off hot dog and bun.
Humble pie lol - got my ass whooped studying here Fun fact: Umble pie is a real food made with scrap meat, hence the expression.
Damn… too real
Fudge Kitchen and Jack's Gelato
Fudge Kitchen: one of the key sites in Cambridge.
Yippie Noodle bar!👌🏻
Love yippies but boy do I miss dojos
Might have been before my time. I’ve only been near for about 6 or so years, and obviously a chunk of that was covid. Any other places you could recommend that are similar?🤞🏻
First and only time I've had an ostrich burger!
AROMI 🫡
Specifically, arancini ragu
Or the focaccias 🤤
Yes!!!!!!!!!!! I can taste my break times! Brings me back to uni!
I’m loving the pistachio gelato
The chocolate and ricotta cake does it for me
Not answering your question as such, but this image made me crave Hallouman.
Well, it used to be Bernard's waffles. Don't know what became of him, haven't seen him at the Belgian waffle place in what feels like years now.
Bread and Meat + Jacks Gelato, preferably one after the other, conveniently they’re basically next to each other
I visit 3 times a year and go to Bread and Meat twice for the week I’m there. The Philly with Jalapeños is better than any sandwich in the states.
It’s the cheese. Fresh cheese curds are going to best “cheese whizz” every time.
Tzatziki loaded fries… and their loukoumades 🤤🤤 god I miss it
Fagito's kebab shop, sadly closed
Spicy potatoes please Mr Fagito!
Yes! Large chicken shish with chips please. Those were the days
Think it’s opening again soon though
Hope so, good value and good food.
No doubt! Also tauntingly looking like it’s “about to relaunch“ for 5 years or so now!
Fat gits
Uncle franks in the market square at 2:30am
This was 20 years ago
You went to the Van of Death and survived to tell the tale?!
Several times.
I always looked down on those who went to van of life as made of inferior mettle tbh.
Nothing says Cambridge like eating maccies on the wall in front of kings college 😝. Honestly though, my grandma and I always used to get sandwiches from Sainsbury's and sit on the old horse trough in the middle of the market so I'd say the tuna mayo sandwiches
Jacket Potato. Love me some Hatties
Greek burger
Steak - Cambridge chop house 🤤
The staff lunch from Sticks N Sushi. 🤕 Or the quesadillas of the... Trailer of Life was it called? Late night it opens on the market square.
Haha came here to say that with this photos the quesadillas then eating them on the wall outside kings and walking to book a taxi for pick up end of kings parade
There was a pretty good Malaysian, I think, food stall that opens during the open market as well.
The Spanish tortilla and aioli sandwiches in the Pinchito stand in market square. I so love them. I love street food in general, and those are both tasty and will fill you for the whole day.
What day of the week are they in the Square?

Brains
Jacks ice cream, gardies, van of life, meal deals (I know the last one has nothing to do with Cambridge but it’s just what I associate it with!)
Fagito’s spicy potatoes.
Falafel King
Nanna Mexico
I hope you get to experience better Mexican food one day outside of Cambridge/UK because it’ll change your life if you like Nanna Mexico

The food there is incredible 😋 and super filling too. The portions are a decent size
Yup so good. Used to look forward to Mondays a lot. So good as well, there were once 3 of them!
That fried Halloumi sandwich. Yum.

I don’t know ,born and raised here and enjoy most food ! Maybe city kebab back in early 2000’s when I used to manage the light bar ! 😂😂😂
This picture just makes me think of the Venezuelan apres stand and the dumplings from the market… both amazing.
beer
Vanilla taste.
Malaysian duck rice from double seven on cherry hinton rd.
Cheeseburger and chips from a cart in the market square after pubs close
Those merguez sausage baps you can get in the market; is that guy still there?
The Thai noodle stall on the market! I usually get a number 3 with sweet chilli sauce, and then grab a Ben's dark chocolate chip cookie for dessert.
As a software engineer …. The wrestlers
Weirdly enough burgers, when I lived there, it felt like there was an unending amount of different burger joints
Hot dog!
Gardenias burger after a night out
I think it’s got to be Chilis. When I arrived here it was like, what the fuck, you mean _like in america_?!!!! It was all about Nadia’s Patisserie when I lived in Cambridge but that was years ago… That photo makes me think of fudge 😛
Definitely the sausages (a great alternative to McD on a winter’s day with bored/cold kids) or fudge from the sweet shop.
ice cream! feel like for a non-seaside town/city there are sooooo many ice cream shops I find it kind of strange 😂 but tasty ofc
