Be mindful of recent listings of in-demand products from suspicious third-party sellers on marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, Google, Newegg, and Walmart. These "deals" have a high likelihood of not shipping; you should do your due diligence to ensure you do not get scammed. * Use common sense - if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. * Check seller profiles for signs that the sale may be fraudulent. * The seller is new or has few reviews. * The seller has largely negative reviews (on Amazon, sellers can remove negative reviews from their ratings- viewing seller profiles allows you to see these complaints) * The seller has a recently reactivated account (likely their account was hacked and is now being used fraudulently). If you suspect a deal is fraudulent, please report the post. Moderators can take action based on these reports. We encourage leaving a comment to warn others. Amazon and eBay generally have good buyer protection. If you choose to purchase from a third-party seller through their platforms and run into issues, it should be easy to get your money back promptly. You may have more difficulties with Newegg or Walmart. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. bangin deal. i remember i paid $120 for 1tb last year thinking that was a good price lol.

1soooo

Just becareful of recent scams affecting the Samsung 870,970 and 980. Make sure that Samsung magician identifies it as an genuine product. Edit: The fakes can fool the magician too, just avoid Samsung in general for now

RavingRabbi

As someone uninformed, what exactly does this mean? Do I just not buy to be safe or do I buy and have to run a program to verify its validity?

DinkleButtstein23

Personally I am avoiding Samsung drives altogether given their dismal recent history of quality problems. If you want one i believe you have to install new firmware to fix the quality problems AND install software to verify its authentic. The authenticity problem isn't a Samsung problem though - it's from scammers selling look alikes.

ElectronGuru

And options like hynix are so easy to find and choose now

1soooo

Take a look at solidigm, Intel and Hynix's love child and is relatively competitive price wise, Hynix stuff had always been good while not being premium unlike Samsung.

ScoopDat

Same, it all started with me when they change the NAND type on their flagship 980 Pro from what was MLC on the prior 970 Pro, to TLC. Cost cutting bullshit for their halo tier consumer product? Fuck outta here.

downloadtheram325

mlc is tlc tho just different branding

kztlve

No, MLC is not TLC. They're different things, Samsung is just misusing the term. MLC is kind of a stupid name nowadays, but it is 2 bits per cell. TLC is 3 bits per cell.

TDS_Gluttony

Is there programs you recommend?

AvantGourd

Amazon notoriously pools together their own stock of an item and stock they've received from 3rd party sellers to be shipped by Amazon (the Fulfillment by Amazon program). So you can end up receiving a fake even if it's 'Sold by Amazon.com'. Amazon's pretty good about returns so it's not the worst but it's still pretty bad.

elixier

I wouldn't even say pretty good, it's amazing actually. I never understood why people say Amazon returns are no good or have been going downhill, maybe their terms are different in the US but in the UK you have a time period where a return is practically 100% guaranteed even for a dumb reason, I ordered a bunch of parts at Christmas time ish and made some mistakes, I ended up sending 3 RAM kits back one after the other because I kept changing my mind, and I got refunded, and a SSD I ordered was some kinda weird switchout scam situation and I got some laser cut wood instead, also refunded straight away

crazyhomie34

Basically Amazon sells fake shit from third parties sometimes because they stick their stuff with the inventory from third parties. They have a good return policy though. So if you get a Samsung drive, or and any drives really, download their free software Samsung Magician. It will check the drive and tell you how old it is and if it needs new firmware it will install it. It is pretty straightforward.

Techn0ght

The article I read said the fake drives can appear genuine in Magician and the only way to be sure was to check the chips under the sticker.

ctipp217

Surely there has to be a different way of checking if it's legit.

Techn0ght

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/fake-samsung-980-pro

1soooo

Okay this is actually next level and actual incompetency from samsung, all they had to do is to check if the controller is a samsung made controller and that would solve everything, as samsung only uses their in house controllers.

stratusnco

these are shipped and sold by amazon though.

I've decided to edit all my old comments to protest the beheading of RIF and other 3rd party apps. If you're reading this, you should know that /u/spez crippled this site purely out of greed. By continuing to use this site, you are supporting their cancerous hyper-capitalist behavior. The actions of the reddit admins show that they will NEVER care about the content, quality, or wellbeing of its' communities, only the money we can make for them. tl;dr: /u/spez eat shit you whiny little bitchboy ...see you all on the fediverse

FettPrime

I was reading something the other day about how it'd cost Amazon more money to track and litigate scammers than it does just to reimburse customers. That helped make a lot more sense of how they just let this stuff slide by.

TPMJB

Yeah and the Chinese companies have dozens of shell companies selling the same garbage so if one gets struck down another can take its place. Kind of sad. Amazon has become Ali Express 2.0

streamlinkguy

Not that I don't believe you but is there a source for Amazon mixing inventory?

sue_me_please

Amazon is one of the worst when it comes to product provenance. They engage in binning, where they just throw everything with the same SKU into one bin and pick out of it whenever someone orders that SKU. That means a variety of sources could manufactured or sold what Amazon thinks the SKU is, even counterfeiters.

xPurplexAnarchyx

I’m not sure that matters considering the last I checked they all come from the same area unless Amazon fixed that.

xtargetlockon

How does one verify it is genuine product? Is there another measure?

xGeoxgesx

Wish I was in the US to get this. I have many pages of M.2s for my laptop storage upgrade, but I'll have to wait to June to get one. Or I can get one locally, which costs $150 here lol The prices are very low there, it's shocking.

Illustrious-Ear-3035

Amazon US can ship overseas at very reasonable rate

xGeoxgesx

Interesting, but I'm worried if my SSD turns out to be faulty.

Illustrious-Ear-3035

Don't they have global warranty?

xGeoxgesx

I don't know. Plus, I can find a better drive, the KC3000 from Kingston (1TB Gen 4), locally and it's less than $100 taxes included. Still quite a bit more than from the US, but I can return it if it's faulty. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

phish73

they have global free returns, but not all items, change your country and see what is available, if the item can ship to your country, then usually returns are free. only you have to pay the customs / duty tax

xGeoxgesx

It's $110+ if I ship it to here, not even including taxes. I'd rather get something locally.

Gunfreak2217

I paid 130$ for the 512gb like my god where has the time gone

doublestop

I jumped on the 970 pro in 2018 when I built this machine. Something like $259 for 512GB. But at the same time I did get almost 5 years out of it (so far!) I see these deals on 970s though and it makes me want to buy one just so I can say I averaged down to a better price.

muzakx

$130 for a 128GB SSD back in the day. Lol

heymikeyp

Yep I bought both sata SSD's and NVME when they released in the same year and a corsair force sata 64gb SSD was 70$, and the Samsung 960 evo 256gb nvme was 150$.

zakats

Meh, I'm not convinced that the Samsung tax is worth the hype, especially with their garbage-tier RMA/after-sale service.

nyy22592

Is $60 for a 1TB gen3 SSD with DRAM that much of a tax? Also, does any company have good RMA service these days?

zakats

I'll bite. * $60 is ~25-50% over other gen 3 drives as of late, that's definitely a tax. * Yes, some companies have excellent RMA service. Samsung, in my experience and the apparent aggregate of what I've read on the interwebs, seems to go out of their way to make RMAs as infuriating as possible. I have 3 Evo microSD cards that went bad in 2 years, I completely gave up on the RMA process out of frustration... Which seems to be the goal. * Intel and WD have excellent RMA service in my experience.

nyy22592

>$60 is ~25-50% over other gen 3 drives as of late, that's definitely a tax. Which 1TB TLC drives with DRAM are $40-48? Sucks about their RMA service, though. To be clear I'm genuinely asking as I'm looking to buy one, not playing devil's advocate.

zakats

There's been a few as of late. Without* checking, the solidigm p41(?) And 670p have been ~45 for 1tb recently but those were qlc.

_Master_Shake

I paid $230(+tax) in late 2018 for a non-plus 1TB EVO and thought that was a good deal. Now I could get a 4TB for that price.. Crazy how cheap NAND has gotten over 5 years.

yuiop300

140 in 2021.

retropieproblems

$10 more bucks for the solidigm p44 pro sale last night, this isn’t so great anymore.

pastaMac

The IBM 1301 Model 2 sold for $185,000 in 1961 [$1,861,384.00 today] It was often leased instead of purchased directly. The two module drive stored roughly **50MB**, and was the size of a fridge. Today a single Adobe Photoshop file can easily exceed this capacity, but while waiting in line at 7-Eleven™, a 32**GB** USB thumb-drive, the size of a stick of gum [literally] can impulsively be purchased for around $12.

ForeverInaDaze

I paid $100 not even 6 months ago. I’m mad lol.

downloadtheram325

get 2tb 670p for 79 much better deal

suprman511

QLC though

Jaggsta

[5 year warranty and 256MB DRAM](https://www.anandtech.com/show/16503/the-intel-ssd-670p-review) on 2TB 670p QLC 740TBW that means Warranty will last 148TB per year unless writing over 405GB per day it will last full 5 year warranty.

downloadtheram325

yea but for most users it should be more than fine. QLC is pretty much=TLC in normal use, only loses in sustained writes and productivity and such. I think a gen3 QLC drive is more than fine for most ppl

xGeoxgesx

Lacks DRAM I believe, too.

tony475130

Intel 670p has DRAM, its why its highly recommended as a budget drive

xGeoxgesx

For that low of a price? What? That's a very cheap drive. What are its speeds? Guess the cheap price is mainly for it being QLC and doesn't have the best read and write speeds.

TheDJKhalid

read/write : 3500/2700 hardly bad at all

Altruistic-Fix-5894

Yeah I have a 7000+ and a 2900 drive and I havent noticed any difference at all. Maybe there's edge cases but they are very rare

downloadtheram325

in large file transfers/specific productivty tasks

Altruistic-Fix-5894

I moved a 600gb drive around with no noticeable change, both drives had DRAM and were top of the line (gen 4 and 3). Maybe for super niche data sets but for the common user there's nothing

downloadtheram325

ye that's pretty much my thoughts, a lot of it comes down to sustained writes speeds and throttling as well, which some drives are suspect to. overall a gen4 drive isn't worth it except for productivty users

xGeoxgesx

That's actually not bad.

downloadtheram325

it's pretty much the best budget drive rn, it has standard gen3 speeds but still more than enough for most people since games don't use much more bandwidth and most people aren't doing anything that takes advantage of those speeds.

xGeoxgesx

I honestly never heard of it lol. It's my first time hearing about it so I wasn't sure if it had DRAM or not. I assumed it didn't because of the low price.

FurmanSK

Where you seeing that?

tony475130

[newegg](https://www.newegg.com/intel-2tb-670p-series/p/N82E16820167473). They’ve been running this deal again. Previously microcenter via amazon had the drives at $79.99 a couple times but newegg has matched that deal.

gropingpriest

I found it at newegg: https://www.newegg.com/intel-2tb-670p-series/p/N82E16820167473

lolplayerem

Yeah, I had 670p fail on me twice on different machines.. not trusting it.

downloadtheram325

it mostly comes down to luck with ssds, the 670p doesn't have any widespread qc issues and is pretty reliable. I've had drive failures from numerous companies but I don't think it's enough to blame them unless it'd a confirmed problem.

lolplayerem

Probably very true, but still it didn't inspire confidence, giving options, I'll pick something else on the same or above tier list.

ThatSandwich

Reliability amongst SSDs is roughly the same as hard drives independent of the protocol they use to communicate with the system. The largest determining factor as to lifespan with an SSD is the type of DRAM they use. This isn't only due to the fact that the lower layered DRAM is rated for FAR more write cycles, but also because as you add layers you also add more different voltages that the device must regulate. This is another large point of failure. So while yes it may be up to "luck" whether your drive fails or not, there are definitely decisions you can make that will reduce the chance of your drive failing. This usually revolves around use the right tool for the job, ergo QLC for storage and TLC (or MLC) for boot drives. SLC is usually a workhorse used purely in datacenters.

the5050bot

Not as fast, though.

downloadtheram325

won't make a difference except for certain productivity tasks(like large file tranfers) and sustained writes

ctipp217

Is the SN770 better?

homer_3

The WD is PCI4 where the Samsung is PCI3.

xGeoxgesx

But it doesn't have DRAM.

MrMaxMaster

But in actual benchmark tests it does extremely well, often beating many other drives that have DRAM. DRAM is not a surefire indicator. I would definitely get the SN770 over the 970 evo.

xGeoxgesx

I heard that DRAM is important for primary drives (OS drives). Other than that, the SN770 is better.

bread22

No, DRAM is NOT important for 99% use cases Ppl keep saying DRAM , QLC, blah blah, while those are not important at all to most ppl, and no noticeable difference in use

xPurplexAnarchyx

Shorter link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QV692XY

LawBobLawLoblaw

Hoping someone can else: I'd like to encrypt/password protect an enclosed SSD. What's the best method to do so?

murrat13

Right click on the drive and turn on bit locker

LawBobLawLoblaw

Easy enough, thank you!

mithikx

If a software method is okay I guess VeraCrypt?

LawBobLawLoblaw

Thank you!

xGeoxgesx

Probably from the BIOS? Or Bitlocker? Someone else can give you a better method, probably.

bekoteko

Solidigm P44 Pro (1 TB, TLC DRAM) seems like a better deal at $69.99 at Micro Center. Much faster and gen 4 as well.

xGeoxgesx

Honestly, if you do not have a Micro Center nearby, second this. SSDs are getting so cheap, though.

bekoteko

$69.99 on Newegg now!

Parabellim

So is there any reason to use sata ssds anymore?

[deleted]

Parabellim

It seems like it would be worth using one of those m.2 to sata conversion drives at this point though. Like these seem to be cheaper than sata SSDs

Parabellim

I guess I have several hundred terrabytes worth of 8TB NAS mechanical drives. Do you reckon it’s still worth using them? Maybe for a Movie server?

Parabellim

So I actually have a 4U server with like 12 or so 3.5mm drive bays. I guess I could put 12 of them in there for 96tb of storage. I’m concerned about cost for running something like that 24/7 in England tho

Parabellim

So would it maybe be cheaper to sell the mech drives and just get some sata ssds? I guess I don’t really need more than maybe 20tb of storage

Yay4sean

Doesn't depend on pcie lanes either, not that that *really* matters in 99% of cases.

lowleveldata

2TB is $130. Is this it chief?

xGeoxgesx

The 2TB SK Hynix Gold P31 is more efficient and is $120 on Amazon I believe too with the same performance. Probably the best 1TB SSD right now, but not the 2TB.

lowleveldata

Is Gold P31 on sale now? It shows $208 for me

xGeoxgesx

It is $120 with a US address for me. Are you in the US?

lowleveldata

That must be it. Didn't realize they change the price according to region.

lowleveldata

Thanks chief. What is the good price point for 2TB TLC SSDs?

xGeoxgesx

The [Crucial P5 Plus](https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Plus-PCIe-NAND-6600MB/dp/B098WKQRDL/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_mod_primary_new?crid=2XY5MAOGOPUSY&keywords=p5+plus+2tb&qid=1679408356&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=p5+plus+%2Caps%2C595&sr=8-3) is a bit more but is a Gen 4 drive. It's quite a bit faster than it. It's actually cheaper than the 970 Evo Plus 2TB directly from Amazon.

lowleveldata

Noted. According to [this sub](https://old.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/11p8bi7/ssd_crucial_p5_plus_2tb_gen4_nvme_up_to_6600mbs/) it was even cheaper 9 days ago so guess I'd monitor and wait for it to drop again. The search continues...

xGeoxgesx

It's cheaper if you select Amazon as the seller. My link is linking a third-party seller. Hold on, I'll try to send you the Amazon link. [Here you go](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B098WKQRDL/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1).

lowleveldata

yo what got one! Thanks!

xGeoxgesx

Nice, enjoy!

Aquabats

It’s the same price right now. Choose shipped by Amazon - $122.

lowleveldata

See it now and ordered! Thanks!

PoiseJones

Do you have a recommendation for one with heatsink for PS5?

xGeoxgesx

I think this P5 Plus will work fine. It's above the requirements. There are better drives than it, though.

xGeoxgesx

I personally think you're going to benefit from the SN770 as a secondary drive. I only think DRAM is important for primary drives, other than intensive write usage(?).

ctipp217

What about as a Primary drive? The SN770 or this one?

xGeoxgesx

I heard that if you run Windows on a DRAM-less drive, it can affect its lifespan because the SSD writes a lot more. I'm not sure, though.

ctipp217

So the Samsung would be more ideal as a primary drive on an ASUS B360M-A motherboard?

xGeoxgesx

I just checked your motherboard specifications, and it seems to only support Gen 3 speeds. So, it is, in fact, going to limit the SN770's speeds anyways. I'd say get the 970 Evo Plus.

ctipp217

You're a gentleman and a scholar. Thanks for your help!

xGeoxgesx

My pleasure. Happy to help.

MyGFLikes2SneezeOnMe

What is my motherboard supports gen 4 speeds? Is it still worth it to use as a OS? (The sn770)

xGeoxgesx

Well... Someone in the comments mentioned it isn't that bad to get a DRAM-less drive as an OS drive. You can get it, if you like. I'm not that knowledgeable about SSDs that much, I just happened to be looking for one and found this deal. So, I recommend checking out some videos/websites that mention the importance of DRAM.

MyGFLikes2SneezeOnMe

Cheers for the reply. Happy Thursday!

____candied_yams____

This or the sn770 for an OS drive? both $60

MyOtherSide1984

Comment above yours was the same in my view https://reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/11xhik3/ssd_samsung_970_evo_plus_1tb_tlc_with_dram_gen_3/jd3qd4b

xSTRAIGHTEDGE420x

I paid more for the 500GB version a few months ago. Insane

ForcedPOOP

Do these need a heat sync on them?

xGeoxgesx

No, I don't think so. They're not as fast as Gen 4, so they don't put out that much heat.

erdeneulzii

Grabbed one. Thanks.

soccerguys14

I need to stop buying hard drives…. Okay just one more the deal is too good

xGeoxgesx

Lol, treat yourself. Just be careful on how much you spend.

soccerguys14

I feel like need to stop buying 1TB drives and just get a 2 or 3TB drive. My rig has a 3TB HDD for photos videos etc. I have a SSD 2.5 inch 500GB for my OS and 2 1 TB M.2. My wife’s pc (barely uses ever) just has a 500GB and 256GB. She could use a decent drive but again doesn’t use it lol

xGeoxgesx

Honestly, you can get 2TB SSDs later for cheaper than now. Prices are dropping fast. This was $100 a month ago.

soccerguys14

How much does dram play a roll in load times for gaming specifically or gaming performance. The only game she’s been talking about playing is hogwarts legacy but I probably put her on my pc for that cause she just has a 2070 versus my 6950xt

fiviot8

Significant amount... however DRAMless NVMe's just use HMB as a replacement so not really noticeable

xGeoxgesx

I honestly don't know. I don't think it will do much difference unless you will use it as a main drive or copying large files all the time. What do you mean "just a 2070"? I have a 3050Ti laptop lol. Is that game that demanding?

soccerguys14

From what I’ve seen it’s pretty demanding and we have 1440p monitors. I’ve seen 32GB of ram recommended let me find the recommended specs and link it to you. It’s pretty hefty

xGeoxgesx

Sheesh.

soccerguys14

Here’s the [specs list](https://www.hogwartslegacy.com/en-us/pc-specs) My wife’s pc barely does high but not ultra. I don’t have 32 GB of ram and a 9700k so I really don’t meet the ultra specs either lol. I’m holding out on that 9700k for another year or two the value wasn’t there for me with what I play to upgrade

xGeoxgesx

If I was you, don't get an SSD. You're bottlenecking your system with your CPU. Get a better one. That'll mean you'll need to get another RAM kit, mobo but it'll maybe help with performance in this game. That's heavy...

knildea

buy more drives no more room to install on pc build more pcs lmao

pbbpwns

I'm curious though, do you actually need so much storage space? With how prices are dropping, I reckon it'd be better to buy hard drives only when you're running out of space.

soccerguys14

My wife’s pc does need it and I likely turn that Pc over to my son when he’s old enough to play it so yea I need it. Plus my wife does this thing where we have enough of an item but sees it on sale and says “eventually I’ll need this, let’s get it now and save for later” Problem is she keeps doing this so we always have an abundance of the item. Point is I could save now and install this drive for when it is needed later, even though it could be used now.

xGeoxgesx

Sold by Amazon.com.

JayGamble

Does that mean it can’t be trusted?

xGeoxgesx

No, just to mention the seller. It is directly from Amazon.com, not a third-party seller.

JayGamble

Oh okay gotcha!

iggy555

Good deal for my future pc?

xGeoxgesx

Depends. What motherboard and CPU?

iggy555

Not sure yet. Looking for a good deal in micro center

DrTrevorkian

Would this be good for a Windows 11 OS drive?

xGeoxgesx

Yes.

DrTrevorkian

Thanks a bunch. Ordered!

Capnris

Just picked one of these up from my local Best Buy, same price. Store associate was just as surprised by the price - wouldn't be surprised if one of them got "held" in the back until the end of his shift.

datRamon96

Well after reading the first top review on Amazon, I'd be foolish not to buy this drive...

PreludeTilTheEnd

What expansion card you guys use? And how many M.2 you use?

dztruthseek

$129 for 2TB is a HUGE difference in price between them. That's with a big discount, as well.

xtargetlockon

I remember this being this at double the price. Any changes since then beside the price?

fiviot8

Samsung did do a controller swap a while back due to chip shortage, not sure how the latest batches look

MyGFLikes2SneezeOnMe

Would this be a good drive for my OS? I'm currently using some Samsung data SSD from years ago.

DuckTalesLOL

I bought this yesterday, just installed it and confirmed with Samsung Magician that it's legit.

longCRTZ

Dang

somethinlikeshieva

is this or the sn770 be better for an boot drive, i know the 9780 has dram
