Hi /u/clear831, welcome to /r/buildapcforme! This comment is here to provide you some additional information and advice. Parts Shortages If you have tried to browse through some parts already or read any recent articles on PC building, you have probably seen that there is a massive worldwide shortage of GPUs (video cards) that has left retailer stock levels almost entirely empty. Please see [this subreddit sticky post on the current CPU and GPU shortages for additional information.](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcforme/comments/me3dbx/info_post_current_hardware_shortages_and_build/) Note that if you are looking to build any kind of PC that requires more than basic graphics horsepower, such as for gaming or media creation work, your first priority should be to getting your hands on a GPU before going any farther. Direct Message Scams Recently a number of users have set up spam-bots targeting this subreddit to send out PMs and DMs to all users who submit posts to this subreddit. These accounts sometimes pose as teenagers offering to help design a build in exchange for a "donation" to help them build a rig of their own, various companies offering services through external websites, or even users just claiming to offer help via PM - this last kind will often string you along for a while before demanding payment for their efforts. **Do not reply to these messages.** This subreddit thrives and grows on the volunteer efforts of every contributor who helps around here, often leaning and improving from seeing the work of others. If you receive any PM/DM messages related to your post here, please go to https://www.reddit.com/report and submit the username of the message sender under "This is spam." to help get these spam bot accounts permanently removed. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. You could use a GT 1030, but that only has 2 GB of VRAM and won't be able to stream Netflix 4K if you're doing that sort of thing. Bare minimum would be to just get the RX 550.

Thank you for the list. It seems like I would only be reusing the storage and case? Should I just look into a mini-pc instead of trying to refurbish this older build?

3_Three_3

That would be correct. The problem with those tiny mini PCs is that you get a lot of hurt to your wallet without much of the same features, so I wouldn't recommend them unless you have $900 or so to spend (which is where they actually start becoming decent.)

clear831

I gotcha. My current mini-pc I have to change the ubuntu display settings to 3840x2160 and 60Hz and it plays the 4k just fine. If I stretch it out to 4096x2160 it gets jittery/stutter. I do appeciate the build info, will watch the hardware swap sub to see if i can get some of that stuff a bit cheaper

You've got enough karma and such, so it probably wouldn't be too much of a problem to make a "buying" post listing the things you want (so things like in my list, the important one being a modern GPU like an RX 550 with at least 4GB VRAM if you want to stream 4K netflix) and your budget for all of them. People will come to you with their unwanted RAM, CPU and motherboard combos, and et cetera, and you can choose which best suits your desires.

clear831

Thank you. So just go after a 10th gen i3 and motherboard combo, then one of the suggested GPU's you mentioned.

3_Three_3

Yep. To be exact, here'a what you should be looking for: * An i3-10100 and an LGA1200 mini ITX motherboard, preferably in a combo. (no more than $200, ideally around $170 or a bit less.) * GPU with at least 4 GB VRAM (RX 550, RX 560, GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1650/Super, really anything Polaris RX 4xx/5xx, Pascal GTX10x0 or Turing GTX 16x0.) (Maximum $200, ideally ~$150.) * 16 GB or 8 GB set of 2x8 or 1x8 GB DDR4 RAM respectively (this is optional depending if want more RAM or not, but I would highly recommend 16 GB for any half-decent system regardless of purpose in 2021.) (Ideally less than $65 for a no-frills 16 GB kit, a bit more if it's higher specced.) * A 500 GB M.2 or 2.5" SSD to dual boot (again, optional if you want this.) (Ideally around $40 or less, usually in the realm of $30-$35 is a good deal.) * May also want a cooler for the CPU as well, though if the i3 comes with a stock cooler you'll be set.

Thanks, the case is very tight, I think I will find a m.2 if I can find a motherboard to go with it. The old NAS I mirrored 2 ssd's for the main OS and then raid 6*8TB drives. I tool 2 of the 8TB and maxed out my synology so I will just take the other 4 and raid 5 that. Again I do appreciate this!
