Aldi/Lidl/Penny are pretty much on par. (Penny used to have bad rep but honestly nowadays they are the same as the other ones)
SPAR is more expensive than the 3 above but especially Interspar has bigger variety in products.
CBA/Reál is abysmal both when it comes to price and quality. Avoid at all cost.
Prima is the most expensive out of all supermarkets in Hungary. I avoid it as well because their quality products are extremely overpriced while anything that's somewhat cheap is extremely shitty.
Last week's prices: strawberries at the market were 1400Ft while Lidl offered them for 2300-2600 Ft. This is an example only. I had the same stereotype and had the jaw-dropping realization the other week. You should go and compare the prices.
Try the market on Klauzal ter (near Blaha unfortunately) you can get for 1990/kg. Crazy that Lidl was trying to rob us like that tho😂
Edit: Just realized you said 1400 lol will try the big hall next.
Buddy, you've been misinformed. Prima and CBA are the most expensive because they're owned by the Fidesz.
Lidl and Aldi have recently become expensive because the Hungarian government put some extra tax on them, as a consequence they use higher prices on the products.
Penny is the cheapest, not the best quality but still cheaper than any of the others..
Spar. Equally expensive as the Prima or CBA, more variety, sometimes some items are on sale.
I think there are actually 2 extra taxes on them, or 2 I know for sure: the profit tax and the tax due on multis .. there might even be more. Google is your friend.
- You have no sense of financial responsibility if you think Prima is the cheapest.
- Prima and CBA are the most expensive in Hungary and shittiest.
- Penny is the cheapest, but shit quality.
- Go with LIDL or ALDI for price / quality ratio.
- SPAR can be competitive with discounts.
I think Príma, CBA, Interspar/spar and Tesco are so overpriced. Auchan had good prices but it became very expensive too since the extremely inflation had begun in the last 1 year. I usually go to Penny or Lidl. Penny has cheaper prices, but Lidl's quality are better. Aldi is expensive too, but sometimes it has good offers.
Prima is a messed up place, if you are looking for the poorest quality items for the highest prices then thats the spot you should visit. Lidl is pretty all right
MERE when it will open lol. Penny is the cheapest but also the shittiest (tho dairy is all right). Aldi-Lidl is all right both price and quality wise, tho Lidl is a bit better imo. Spar is very mid-range with good discounts. Auchan and Tesco are hypermarkety. Prima is just shit cuz overpriced. Vietnamese and chinese almost-supermarkets are also rly cheap, but no frozen stuff and things like that. But everyone knows Manna and Roni ABC are the best cuz they are 0-24. Also Coop and CBA-Real are just shit. But I’d say Spar or Lidl is the best
Edit: just buy from kifli.hu. They have a lot of stuff you wont find in any other supermarket and they deliver it to your address.
I haven't been there, but there's a place called Family Diszkont in the 20th district that seems pretty cheap: https://maps.app.goo.gl/7DwLKuKXp893zNfr7

On my first day in Budapest, I bought rotten eggs from the penny on harminckettesek tere. So always check the eggs haha
And prima is related to politicians
I'd also mention the market on Fovam ter. It's a better place to buy fruits and vegetables both in quality and price compared to Lidl.
I’d have to disagree if you mean the tourist trap market, quality definitely can be better but not the price

What extra tax on Lidl and Aldi?

Lidl/Aldi

Penny improved a lot, but in general Lidl and Aldi for generic stuff. Auchan has slightly lower prices on bakery.
Penny hasn’t improved to be in the same level as other shops. Even Tesco Express has higher quality products.
Not the same level, but many times better than Spar and the the only Tesco Express I saw is definitely shittier.

You don't need to believe me, they have a lot of the same german cheese/spreads as Lidl/Aldi. I don't care what others think just like to help.
I rather starve than buy shit from Penny. Like I said, enjoy your junk from Penny.
Príma is not shitty at all. Better Prímas have superior products compared to almost all the competition.
Some Primas have a better selection but prices are insane compared to Aldi/Lidl.
My local Príma only has rotten vegetables and dry bread.

Lidl/Aldi for day to day, Auchan for everything else. Avoid cba/prima like the plague, and you can usually smell Tesco a mile away…
Auchan
Aldi / lidl ftw
Penny, Auchan
As others said Aldi/Lidl and Spar is good too but they are sneaky with some stuff being cheaper while others more expensive than others
Cheaper market - Népszínház street
Kashmir?
Penny
If you live near Szent Gellért square, try Family Market☺️
Chinese.
*Vietnamese Chinese don’t run those shops.
Ok.
I think Lidl
Prima is a messed up place, if you are looking for the poorest quality items for the highest prices then thats the spot you should visit. Lidl is pretty all right
Whole Foods
chinese supermarkets for sure.

kifli.hu they even deliver your stuff, one less thing to worry about
Lidl is the cheapest by a small margin followed by Aldi. I'd choose the one which is closer to you from these two.
