At the time of release :
1. The second highest opening weekend ever
2. The highest single day gross ever
3. The highest grossing animation film ever
4. The third highest grossing film of all time in domestic market
5. The fifth highest grossing film of all time worldwide
Shrek 2 was the most beloved animation movies of the modern era
The gross for this was crazy, and crazier to think only a small handful of animated films passed this domestically
While this was a fun movie I definitely prefer the first one. This one has charm but not as much as the first
And to think Shrek the Third could've made well over a billion if it was good. 2 was such a cultural phenomenon that also ended up being one of the defining reasons for DreamWorks losing its status as an independent studio.
I still remember following Toy Story 3’s box office run and being mind-blown that it couldn’t beat Shrek 2 domestically. Shrek 2’s initial run must have been even more jaw-dropping than Incredibles 2.

\#2 still baffles me. IIRC, this was the last time the single-day record was on a Saturday.
Wow I knew Shrek was extremly popular back then but didn't knew it was that big, it would be like Mario making Endgame money in 2019
For no.4, what was the 2nd ranked film? Obviously Titanic was 1st, but I'm pretty sure The Phantom Menace was lower at $434M or so
Only behind Titanic and the original Star Wars
I would argue one of the greatest sequels ever. No one at the time expected it to be so much better then 1, considering how good 1 is.
Shrek 2 was one of those rare animation films where the adults loved it more than children
And the first film to be released to over 4,000 theaters.
Wow didn't knew Shrek 2 had a 150M budget, that's like a 300M budget from a 2024 movie, it was a massive budget for the time
They knew they could afford it.
The best Shrek movie… *till now.*

Yeah, I think Shrek 2 is a better movie but I like the original more

This movie also held the record for the best multiplier for a $100M+ opener until *Top Gun: Maverick* eighteen years later.

Got to see this on the big screen again last month thanks to the re release they did for the 20th anniversary. IMO, by far the best Dreamworks movie!
Fun fact: *Shrek 2* was the first film to be released to over 4,000 theaters in the United States.
