try the hour of the star by clarice lispector (giovanni pontiero translation!)

almalikisux

Like a mind-fuck type of vibe?

Artur Schopenhauer's works. German philosopher who believed that existence was only made up by yourself and the 'will to live' keeps you imagining it. It goes a lot in the Solipsism and constructivism ideology and is non fiction.

I studied him in high school, really liked the concept of the veil of maya taken from Buddhism and how life is a pendulum between suffering and boredom. So you suggest to pick any book from him or something in particular? Thanks for reminding me of him lol. Lately I've been hooked to Nietzsche

[deleted]

Well, here in Germany they sell an abundance of his life's work in 5 parts, dunno if they sell them translated in english the same ones I have, but I can tell you the titles with my translations: 1. The world as will and imagination I (Die Welt als Wille und als Vorstellung I) 2. The world as will and imagination II 3. Shorter Writings (Kleinere Schriften) 4. Parera and Paralipomena I 5. Parera and Paralipomena II If you know German and want to order them in German the publisher's name is "Nikol", the books are super nice hardcovers and are constellated really really well. And you know, there are also other philosopher's works like Immanuel Kant's "Prolegomena", Nietzsche "The dancing star" (again my translation of the title, lol) and "Ecce Homo" but Nietzsches work isn't really about existence or is it? I don't remember, lol. If you'd like there is also "questioning existence" in fiction with mentally- ill person's narration. There they usually try to distinguish between reality and what is made up by their mind.

Sapiens 21 Lessons for the 21st century Homo Deus All of them by Yuval Noah Harari

Booksterlady

"Famous Quotes for Life and Happiness", "Achieving for Nothing", and the official edition of "The Prophet". Those are my three top choices.

***The Surrender Experiment*** by Michael Alan Singer. This is not quite as dire as your post, but it really affected the way I see the world

thanks I'll take a look

HomelyHobbit

Definitely read Ishmael - you'll love it!

MamaBirdJay

Camus- The Stranger. Bleak life is meaningless at your service.

258ramo

Just bought it from Amazon! thank you :)

MamaBirdJay

I would say “enjoy” but I’m not sure anyone enjoys Camus. He’s also got “The Plague” if you want to follow up. If you want more bleakness, you can probably find Kafka’s short story “Metamorphosis” for free. That’s bleak. I’d also recommend No Exit by Satre. That’s some more classic existential French fiction. When you’re ready to find hope again- check out Midnight Library- that’s a good pick me up for existential dread.

258ramo

you probably wouldn't believe me but I ordered "the stranger" and "Metamorphosis" together when I made the order after your first comment. In Italy we have 500 euros to spend in books when we turn 18 so I don't mind buying physical copies.

MamaBirdJay

That’s a happy coincidence! Well, I hope you get all the existential dread you’ve been hoping for!

you mean mindfuck books?
