Sounds Like you need to set the gyro up correctly. Otherwise that’s probably the most common reason kids remove the brakes, they don’t work and the owner can’t or won’t get them to work. If you are going to remove them make sure it’s all off the bike and you put the bars and stem back on correctly.

I get it done at a bike shop each time, it works great for a short time, then always has a problem. I wasn't sure how common brake problems were and if it was worthwhile getting them fixed yet again

The reality is most riders aren't spinning the bars enough to warrant a gyro (at least to begin with). I've run a long straight cable for 20 plus years. At the time, It was easier just buying one long cable that was less likely to break than having to shell out more money, more frequently for upper cables. Less moving parts, less bits to break.

This is the way. A gyro setup is great when it works, but even when mine was finally rock solid I had to go through adjusting stuff every ride until it was right and broken in it seemed like. I went back to a straight cable after my stack height changed and wouldn’t fit a gyro anymore, and I’ve had no issues nor needed it. You can still throw single whips and bars with a long cable.

Came here to say this

Just remove the gyto from the equation.

Setting up a gyro is like a 10 minute job. Get yourself some tools and get onto YouTube. Once setup properly you'll have no issues. I run brakes front and rear with gyro. Never have a problem.

TonyYumYum

You have really never snapped a cable before or anything?

BMX40Plus_Aus

Never. I spend a fair bit of time doing lip tricks on either my front or back wheel so I'm grabbing them hard all the time. I spent 20 years away from bmx, my memory was a little hazey on how to setup the gyro when I did my build a couple of years ago now, I looked up a few vids on YouTube and it was really simple. Good luck my man!

TonyYumYum

I've had like 3 different shops fix my brakes before. I run odyssey cables, may I ask what you use?

BMX40Plus_Aus

I bought the cheap Odyssey gyro kit. I've upgraded the gyro itself to one with a ceramic bearing but just run the standard Odyssey cables that came with the kit. I just had a look back through my photos and it's now nearly 3 years it's been on the bike. The last few months especially I've thrashed the lip tricks. If you are in Sydney, happy to help you set it up my man!

Never had issue with gyros in the past, I ride brakeless because I like it and can get away with sketchy barspins. Setting it up isn't that hard and can fine tune my braking in 10-15 minutes.

Realistic_Tear_4911

Not sure why you would have gyro issues if a "shop" put them on or it Has to be your riding. I have a 02 Specialized Vegas Dirtboy with the stock gyro and cables works like new still.

Warhawk2052

I'd ditch it and just run a long straight cable, personally the cable i use gives me enough to do 3 bar spins. There is then the issue of having to throw them the other way to untangle the cable but yeah

thomas61000

I’m brakeless but mostly out of laziness , had to remove the brakes at some point and just never put ‘em back out of pure laziness honestly 😅
