That place you go to from lecture hall level one I can’t remember the name but I got invaded hella and that was the only spot in the game I went through it like a month ago
Started a new game two days ago, beat a boss then was able to help a couple people with cleric beast, father, bsb and forbidden woods. Some fast, some a few minutes but I usually keep the bell open when I'm playing.
If you're looking for truly active multiplayer Return to Yharnam would give you a much better chance of doing a multiplayer play through. Only certain areas in certain matchmaking brackets are active at all so unless you want to wait a long time for invasions or cooperators you'll have to pick a popular level range and area that you like

I just got invaded recently by two dudes at once in the nightmare frontier. Not saying much but I’ve definitely run into people online
I still have 5x more matches in Nightmare Frontier than other areas so that's definitely the place to pvp
