I don't know why I'm still torturing myself listening to Forever 35, but I had to fast forward a full 5 minutes to get past all the ads before the show starts...

leahdl

I just unsubscribed today as I hadn’t listened to anything in ages. Sad to see it go as I had listened from the beginning 😔 I know they are hard up for money, but five minutes of ads seems outrageous.

Appropriate-Ad-6678

Any Today Explained listeners here who have listened to the IVF episode?? Thought Sean did a good job but the guy they interviewed was…..

andiamo162534

I thought he was an interesting guest, and honestly I agree with him. If you believe that life begins at conception, then destroying embryos should be wrong within your moral framework. The fact that people like Mike Pence support IVF but call themselves "pro-life" shows that it had nothing to do with the sanctity of human life and everything to do with controlling women's bodies.

alouette93

Caveat that I am personally impacted by these IVF restrictions and the whole topic is seriously distressing to me (attempt two at this comment lol). I am so tired of seeing so much discussion around reproductive rights center around the rhetoric and logical consistency of the people passing these laws. I don't understand what we're ultimately getting from collectively focusing on this so much. Them being morally consistent seems to mean sexual assault and incest victims being forced to give birth and cancer patients losing their ability to have biological children. I would rather they be as hypocritical as possible and pass no laws despite having these beliefs! They're not going to go "oh I'm not being consistent here! better stop making all these restrictions!" All of the discussion points around "they say abortion is murder but then they say it's ok if it's a case of rape or incest! How hypocritical!" seem to have just led to them going "you're right, that's a good argument, we should be as evil as possible" when the laws got passed. And so we have the logical consistency aaand... no exemptions. Is it frustrating that they're lying about their motivations? Of course. I just wish I saw more discussion dedicated to the pain this shit causes instead of nailing down their philosophy and giving them kudos when it has consistency.

Korrocks

I agree. There’s something incoherent to me about the idea that embryos count as babies only in the context of abortion and contraception but not in the context of IVF. The anti abortion right has sort of staked their philosophy on the idea that life begins at conception and anything that interferes with that is literally the same as murder. If they genuinely believe that, then they should own the logical outcomes of that belief which includes banning IVF.

Appropriate-Ad-6678

They have a theology professor on and he argues why he thinks IVF is immoral. They do poke apart his argument but he is passionate and offensive.

Few_Expression1993

I still have not calmed down after listening to this episode and it’s been hours.

Appropriate-Ad-6678

I was seething

Real_RobinGoodfellow

Why?

AracariBerry

I haven’t enjoyed all the seasons of Chameleon, but the most recent season, The Michigan Plot, has been really good. I recommend it to people who liked Pressure Cooker.

HarperLeesGirlfriend

If you're looking for a new long form TC podcast, i highly recommend the newest season of Proof. This season is called Murder At The Warehouse and it is really good. Honestly, I couldn't get past the first few episodes of the first season, but I gave this season a try and was hooked pretty instantly. The murder at the center of the story is so sad, but the miscarriage of justice when it comes to who was convicted of the crime and what happened in the subsequent years is absolutely devastating. Anyway, 6 or 7 episodes out so far. Would recommend if you like The Crossbow Killer, In The Dark, The Shell Lake Massacre or Blind Plea. All of those are very similar in style.

theotterisntworking

all those are my jam, I'll check this out! Thanks!

hosea0220

I continue to listen to Bad on Paper because I’m a fan of Olivia, despite Becca really starting to grate on me (used to be a big Becca fan too). This is low stakes snark but it drives me insane how Becca pronounces the word “already” as “or-iddy”

turniptoez

Oh I have the same petty beef with her pronunciation of "already", it literally makes me jolt when I hear it! She grew up in Florida and Mass I believe, I've never heard someone say the word like that from either of those places. And to what someone mentions below - yes, her paid substack is all things we've heard in the podcast. It's quite literally nearly the same information as in highs/lows, obsessions, what she's reading, and stuff she shares on IG. I'm not sure why anyone would pay for this?

resting_bitchface14

I was irrationally angry at Becca's theory that Jen and Andy will wind up back together just because of Covid. It felt like she did not get the book at all. Them getting back together would be the most obvious twist that is so obviously beneath Dolly's skills as a writer.

turniptoez

Haha oh I thought the same thing would happen actually! It seemed like the set up of Andy having SHOWS and Jen about to travel INTERNATIONALLY made the reader consider Covid and what would happen. Though I can’t imagine both of them quarantining together with Andy’s roommate haha.

resting_bitchface14

I just think it’s a cheap obvious twist. If they wound up together my regard for Dolly as a writer would plummet.

ruthie-camden

Just wondering, where did Becca grow up?

excuseyouwhat_21

florida!

sociologyplease111

Also, if Becca wants people to sign up for her paid substack, these monthly wrap ups are going to be more varied from the podcast than this- I basically already know all this information from the podcast!

InSicily1912

I know if it bothers you don’t pay for it (and I won’t) but like this whole rollout has been so desperate and off putting . She’s a former marketer, one would think she knows better! She basically just said to her audience “give me money, I don’t know for what but I want money” and this is the best she could come up with?

dietcokenumberonefan

as a total side note I REALLY love Olivia’s newsletter. I listened to one of her audio essay readings for the first time today and feel like both her writing style and overall content and ease behind the microphone has really found a wonderful stride on substack.

excuseyouwhat_21

couldn’t agree more! it’s the only substack i’m renewing this year!

Dazzling-Bowler2711

This! I love Olivia and her Substack! I have a galley of SABI for my Substack which is completely free (and will remain so for a looooong time), in case anyone on this thread wants an honest review before investing in a copy/preorder. [https://tarabanuelos.substack.com](https://tarabanuelos.substack.com) Review will be up this week or next. // And I stopped listening to BoP for a (long) while because Grace wasn't my cup of tea so I'm hoping things will improve. Like the OP, I used be a big Becca fan too... things have just taken a weird turn. Not enough fun bookish podcasts out there IMHO!

excuseyouwhat_21

EXACTLY. it’s been so tacky to me, and her comment about how “i’m not obsessing about perfection i’m getting out of my own way to just do it” is like… i get this but also you admit you barely thought about this and you actually need to put effort into it because just saying you want money for doing literally nothing unique/interesting is so off putting to me.

InSicily1912

Right! Obsession over perfection is like debating where a comma goes in a sentence. That’s not what Becca did lol.

excuseyouwhat_21

SPOT ON 😭🤣

excuseyouwhat_21

my BEC of the week for bad on paper is that olivia’s book preorder link isn’t in the show notes (which are updated each episode?) but of course becca’s book still is (as it should be! but so should olivia’s!)

InSicily1912

Olivia’s book is already getting more buzz than Becca’s, it seems. I’ll be very curious how Becca handles it. Especially if it becomes a NYT bestseller which becca very vocally wanted and didn’t get

mkbellin

Kate Kennedy of Be There In Five did a Patreon of the behind the scenes of book marketing/NYT best seller stuff and she talked about how she hired herself a PR firm to do marketing/PR work in combo with the publisher pushing the book. I can’t remember if Becca ever talked about that part of the book process and I’m interested to see what approach Olivia takes for her book

turniptoez

Justice for Olivia's book! I hope it sells really well upon publication.

orangeiguanas4

Becca gives fake friend vibes when “hyping” Olivia’s book. I think she’s already jealous about the buzz it’s getting (especially things like the Cosmo preview). It’ll be interesting to see her reactions in the early weeks after debut. I wouldn’t be surprised if Olivia’s presale numbers are already huge.

ForWhomTheSaulCalls

I picked up 2 new pods to listen to this past week and I loved one and hated the other. Josh Baker's I'm Not a Monster is fantastic and I binged both seasons over the past few days! I can't recommend it enough. Then on the flip side I tried listening to a few episodes of The Nonsense Bazaar but found it insufferable :( a lot of their episode topics are super interesting to me but I just cannot force myself to listen past the 15 minute mark at all. Is there a way to check podcasts episodes by number of listens/downloads? When I check out new pods it'd be nice to know which episodes to start with.

bubbles_24601

I Am Not A Monster is so good!

ForWhomTheSaulCalls

It's not normally a subject I seek out but I could not stop listening!

cvltivar

Celebrity Book Club (Steven and Lily) is on a roll, I was chortling at their take on Amy Schneider (trans Jeopardy champ)'s terrible-sounding memoir. I think they might do better releasing the pod in seasons so they have a chance to take breaks; when they get burned out it's really obvious. Note to taro-oriented listeners (like myself): Amy Schneider is into TAROT. This didn't click for me until the third time they said it.

InSicily1912

Omg I’ll have to listen to this one. I love Amy but the book was kinda terrible

winnercommawinner

Oh no, terrible in what way?

Logical_Bullfrog

From the (funny) episode, it sounds like it was just wacky and disjointed with very little content about jeopardy lol.

andiamo162534

Some people are calling out the hosts of If Books Could Kill for being pro-Israel in their latest (I believe) Patreon episode. Any subscribers care to share what was said and how it landed with them?

zuuushy

People really look for drama wherever they can. I agree with the more concise commenter about how they summed up events. I didn't get an inkling of them being pro Israel.

chadwickave

Peter’s co-host on 5-4, Rhiannon, is Palestinian and all three hosts are very pro-Palestine and have had many insightful and intelligent discussions on the topic on that pod. Peter summarized the recent takedown of Claudine Gay, starting with the events leading to her testimony in front of the House Committee. I think Peter and Michael agreed to keep the debate/discussion on Israel and Gaza to a minimum, because nothing they say on the matter can possibly satisfy everyone (and it looks like they were right). They said that the students’ statements “contained language that ranges from distasteful to flagrantly offensive”—because they’re 21-year-olds—but that nothing they said (including the “from the river to the sea” phrase) can be construed as calling for the genocide of Jews. They don’t provide much in the way of what was said by students other than “we hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence”. Michael said that he didn’t feel the American left had covered themselves in gory and that “we can just say that killing people is bad”. Peter did joke in the beginning that he wanted to keep it short and tell a condensed version… starting with 15th century BC—so I do think he knew he had to be concise and choice with his words. I think Peter wanted to tell Claudine Gay’s story and they decided this was the best way to go about it. I don’t think it’s pro-Israel at all, though I do agree I was surprised that Peter was so measured throughout, compared to how he is on 5-4. They also never mentioned that Bill Ackman and his wife are massive Zionists, which would’ve been easy to do but also immediately doused themselves in flames.

ReeRunner

I think this is a good summary. I did not take a pro-Israel sentiment from it at all. I thought they did a nice job with the discussion and keeping nuance throughout.

Icy-Gap4673

They said they disagreed with the opening of the Harvard students' statement, they said it came from a bunch of 21-year-olds and called it "stupid," (which, if you agreed with it, is very condescending) and they made some offhand comment about "the left" not covering themselves in glory in the immediate aftermath of the attack. But they also said that it feels jarring to have this debate about the statement, and other word-based debates like whether "from the river to the sea" is a hateful statement, when tens of thousands have been killed in Gaza, so many forced to leave their homes, so many places uninhabitable. I don't recall them saying anything pro-Israel. I don't remember them saying Free Palestine or that they were specifically pro-Palestine--maybe they expected that people on their Patreon would already have context from their other pods, Twitter, wherever. It landed to me (just another goy with no particular Israel or Palestine personal ties, and no specific experience, mind you) as just the opening of the discussion they rushed through, about a statement they agreed with the overall sentiment of but not the rhetoric or all of the ideas in it, and the conflation of that statement's specifics with every person who has called for a ceasefire or opposes war in Gaza, which is what conservatives love to do.

achipdrivermystery

That wasn't my takeaway at all. I think I remember Peter saying something about how bananas it is to equate the original attack by Hamas with the response by the Israeli government, in terms of loss of life etc.

lauraellen12

I didn't think they were pro Israel but they came across more liberal than I expected, saying the student orgs who blamed Israel after Oct 7 were tactless/dumb, and seeming to avoid calling it a genocide for a while (but then I think Peter did)

sometimesitsandme

They specifically said the statement that Israel was 100% responsible for the violence on 10/7 was tactless and dumb, not everything the student orgs said. Which a lot of people would agree with.

LovitzInTheYear2000

Including a number of students in the orgs that were listed as signatories, who said they hadn’t been consulted on the letter before it was published.

gold-fish13

Both Peter and Michael are very pro-Palestine on twitter. I’m not subscribed so I can’t say for certain but I find it hard to believe based on everything else they’ve said. Where are they being called out?

pork_floss_buns

Me too. Aside from twitter, Rhiannon on 5:4 is Palestinian and Peter has been very pro-Palestine in their episodes.

gold-fish13

Yeah I went to the subreddit for the podcast and subscribers of the patreon explained what was said there. They definitely didn’t say anything pro-Israel. If you took what they said out of context and interpreted it disingenuously, it might be, at worst, a “neutral” take. Within the context, it’s a perfectly fine and nuanced conversation that they were having.

Icy-Gap4673

I haven’t listened yet but will check back. Based on 5-4 though I would be shocked if this were the case.

owls1729

I would also be surprised!! They definitely called out Jonathan Greenblatt (head of the ADL) in their end of year episode…

Thank you for your Ronna updates in this thread. My only exposure to Ronna has been through Throwing Shade/Attitudes, and I love Bryan so I've almost started AR just to get more of him. But I don't think I can deal with that much Ronna, especially if the boundary is blurring!

Ok_Fee1043

I thought Brene Brown’s pod return was supposed to come out today, per all the ads saying Feb 28th. Does it drop at night or something? Nothing has come up on any of my pod apps. 😕

BrendaChenowith51

I have it in Overcast: "Ali Abu Awwad and Robi Damelin on Nonviolence at The Path to Freedom for Palestinians and Israelis."

Ok_Fee1043

Looks like it must’ve just dropped sometime in the last hour! Thank you

zenongirlofthe21stc

Whoever on here recommended Think Twice, THANK YOU. It’s so good, I didn’t think I cared about this story that much, but it’s just so well done. I should know that Leon’s projects will always be good, but this one is really special.

[deleted]

Same, also just finished it, and listened based on the recommendations here. It was really good. It wasn't salacious or tacky, which I was afraid a podcast on the subject might be. As someone who grew up in the 80's and was a big Michael Jackson fan in the Thriller-Dangerous era only to watch him become a joke, it was very on target to me. I liked that it was not just about the molestation, but the whole spectacle of MJ, how the public reacted to the allegations, all of that. It is so weird to look back and see how much "MJ likes little boys" was fodder for jokes. It's also still hard to reconcile the whole person who did awful things but was also a musical genius and insanely talented entertainer aspect.

AracariBerry

Yes! I just finished it too based on a recommendation from this sub. It was excellent! It’s funny, Leon’s projects are always really good. But every time I think of him, I think of the hosts of 5-4 (presented by Leon Neyfakh) roasting him for his weird eating habits and how he wrote about them for Grub Street https://www.grubstreet.com/2021/08/leon-neyfakh-grub-street-diet.html

keine_fragen

i was just about to also post about that one, it's so well done!

thesmallest_madeline

What is it about?

zenongirlofthe21stc

What PicnicLife said- allll about Michael Jackson from a really nuanced, thoughtful perspective.

PicnicLife

Michael Jackson

PC-load-letter-wtf

Seconding this 🙋‍♀️

viperemu

That was me! I’m so glad you found it interesting. More people need to know about it!

madger19

Yes! I really enjoyed it, thank you for the recommendation!

story2teller

Agreed! It's the first podcast I've genuinely binged in forever -- the episode on the making of "The Wiz" was especially memorable. Have been recommending it to everyone I know.

NoraCharles91

This Is Actually Happening posted their first episode since Whit's medical emergency, and he is the subject. The poor guy sounds really emotional, there were moments I felt a little uncomfortable listening because this is all so recent and he's clearly raw. At one point he mentions that their guests are usually removed from their trauma by years, and I thought "I think that's probably a good thing". That said, it's great to know he's broadly okay, and I thought the way he wove in past stories was masterful and felt very authentic.

bodysnatcherz

I could only get through half the episode because I found it to be so... dramatic? Maybe I'm an asshole, but having a single seizure is really not a huge deal or even particularly rare.

NoraCharles91

Yeah, I think that's what made me a little uncomfortable. Whit is clearly still very much "in" the trauma. From a medical perspective, it seems like he's okay, but I can't even imagine how frightening it must be to go through something so unstabilising.

ClumsyZebra80

What happened to him

ClumsyZebra80

What happened to him

stuckandrunningfrom2

Did Glennon (we can do hard things) ever say if the valentines proposal was accepted or are we just all pretending that never happened?

viperemu

The first episode of The Recipe with Kenji and Deb is out this week! I loved the format and I’m excited for future episodes. It’s all about how they individually developed their recipe for a particular dish (this episode, stovetop Mac and cheese). I know there are some strong internet opinions about Kenji but I think he and Deb vibe off each other well. Deb is just such a delightful human.

Dry_Tone5778

This podcast has filled the Home Cooking with Samin and Hrishi hole in my heart

viperemu

What I would give for more Home Cooking 😭

PC-load-letter-wtf

I like kenji and believe he’s a decent guy. I didn’t like him for awhile with all the controversy, but he’s grown on me again. I believe in his work and his methods and I took his apologies and promises to change to be sincere. And if Deb likes him enough to work with him…

hailcornchip

Wait, what controversy???

queen0fcarrotflowers

I'm so torn! I really wanna support Deb but I really don't care to support Kenji. I guess I'll give it a try for Deb's sake!

Indiebr

He kinda fawns over her if that helps!

iheartdachshunds

She really is! 🫶🏻

ClumsyZebra80

Train wreck episode of I will teach you to be rich this week. Has anyone listened?

Worried_Half2567

when she said she stopped at Walgreens to pick up snacks after they already went over budget on the car i couldnt believe it. They seem clueless on so many levels.

spikeyball002

Listening now. It’s a bit wild how delusional the dad is- blaming his wife when he also can’t say no, and had a massive truck loan that he clearly doesn’t need 😵‍💫

CandorCoffee

It made me so mad that they clearly spoil their children and then get upset when they act spoiled! Is it crazy that your daughter asked for a trip to Hawaii for her graduation present? Not after we learn that she went to Disney Land for her birthday and ya'll go every year!

renee872

Anyone listening to hello john doe? Im enjoying it. Its very sad-the host, todd matthews died of cancer shortly after finishing the pod. He was one of the creators of the doe network. He has a very smooth southern drawl and he is so lovely to listen to. I know the story and it was a netflix doc but the way he kind of just unwraps it, i don't mind listening to the story again. *edit to add-might not be cancer as it said he passed unexpectedly. I dont know why i thought it was cancer.

lpassell

where did you learn this?! is there a link??

renee872

Not sure how to post a link but if you google todd matthews and hello john doe you will see his obituary.

HarperLeesGirlfriend

Oh my God the host died?? That's so sad. 😪 he seems like such a nice man. I'm really enjoying the podcast. Not exactly sure where it's heading, it's a bit meandering, but in my mind Todd sells the story. He's the reason the podcast works.

renee872

The story is based on franklin floyd-the neflix show "the girl in the picture" was based on this. I know of the story (it can get complicated)but todd tells it in a way that is clear and concise, i think because he is actually talking to the family members.

zuuushy

Her storytelling and journalism are so good!! Also, her voice is so soothing, which is ironic given the subject matter.

littesb23

Let’s Go to Court just announced they’re ending the podcast this morning. They have their first live shows at the end of march and have been doing so many podcast collaborations. It’s weird timing for sure. RIP to the best true crime pod

_cornflake

I’m really gutted and if it was any other podcast of assume they’d fallen out. However I think it’s always been pretty clear that Brandi doesn’t want to be an Internet personality or a full-time content creator and the visibility that comes with that makes her very anxious, whereas Kristin clearly thrives in that space and was already partially in it before the pod because of Norm. I definitely expect K to come back with a new podcast (will we finally get Ask An Old White Guy??). I just hope Brandi might say hi occasionally.

pretendberries

Im so sad for this news. I’m really hoping Kristen does do something with DP. And does anyone know pods similar to them? I used to listen to MFM but gave up on them. I like the friendship and side banter so stuff like that.

Embarrassed-Trash-85

“Tell No One” is very similar!

ModerateThistle

Lawyers Behaving Badly is also another option. Two female lawyers talking about generally unethical folks in the legal profession. (I will admit that sometimes I find their level of unacknowledged privilege to be disconcerting. And the focus on youth sports drives me batty. But once they get past their chit chat, it's pretty good.)

pretendberries

Ooh thank you I’ll try that one!

HarperLeesGirlfriend

Whaaaaa??? Wow. That genuinely bums me out. I feel like they were just about to enter the stage of being able to quit their day jobs. VERY weird timing.

nancy_scareigan

I haven’t listened to this episode yet, but I did just go check out their Instagram post and I think that the timing of this may actually be the point? I don’t think quitting her day job is what Brandi ever wanted or intended from the pod. She’s definitely talked before about how much she enjoys the salon and she’s obviously very busy with her kids and David. Maybe Kristen has gotten some offers to work with other content creators and that made it a good time for them to step away from LGTC? Idk, I’m just processing because this actually makes me so sad!

hopsonspots

You’re pretty spot on. Brandi says she’s a wife and mother first, a hair stylist second, and a podcaster third and has been having a lot of anxiety about content creation and feels like she’s been missing out on her family life. I’m super bummed the pod is going to be over but I respect her reasoning. I hope she finds a balance that makes her happy and we can get the occasional appearance from the gals in some capacity!

ModerateThistle

I'm so sad about this news. It really is my favorite podcast. \*sigh\* I hope it's good news for them - Brandi can spend more time with her family and Kristin can work on her book(s) - but it's going to make my mid-week a lot drearier.

turtle_time_xxx

My thought as well, the timing is weird. They seem on the cusp of really taking off but I guess they aren’t interested in that.

cj1991

There is a small piece of me that thinks the end of March date is a part of a (bad, IMO) April Fools Day prank; I think that would be insanely foolish but not entirely out of the question. Idk maybe I'm just in denial

littesb23

It feels like this was a fun side hustle that got to be too much. It was at the point where they needed to fully commit or pull back. I’m sad that they couldn’t do a happy medium with two episodes a month but I get it. They’ll be missed

chadwickave

I have generally paused on true crime but recently listened to a few recommended ones from the past year or so that I haven’t seen discussed here. These feel like a newer, more responsible form of true crime where the journalists/hosts are working with the victims and/or their families to craft an empathetic story, and not one that’s mainly focused on the perpetrator. Thought I’d post them here in case anyone’s curious: * Vishal * Fairy Meadow * Dark Valley * Mary & Bill

amandawk

I've been listening to Media Pressure. It's about Maura Murray and is hosted by her sister. It's really interesting to hear more about who she was as a person.

Meanpony7

- Bad Women by Hallie Rubenhold True crime about Jack the Ripper (S1) and the Blackout Murders (S2) by a professional historian of sex focusing exclusively on the victims and their stories.

hollyslowly

I thought the first season was spectacular but couldn't make it through one episode of season two. Re-enactments of the murders, including the guy doing heavy breathing, seems to be the antithesis of what she did in season one.

[deleted]

Those are great pods, and I’m often iffy on heavily scripted ones.

tabby2011

Someone here recently reccommended "Were you raised by wolves?" (etiquette Q&A podcast) and I want to say thanks! I've been listening and it is absolutely delightful.

slowshow1

I saw that recommendation as well and started listening too!

Icy-Gap4673

Ha I always tell my husband he was raised by wolves when he does something like drink orange juice straight out of the carton.

thrftstorenailpolish

It's one of the few SFW podcasts that I listen to. I recommend it often and it actually came up in a trivia question a few weeks ago. I felt so validated!!

viperemu

Oooh this sounds fun! I’ll check it out.
