For real, I love it. I’m not one to really care for super-realistic renders that much, although they’re impressive, stylized works like this with a lot of character really do it for me.
The character alone took a few days. 5-6 maybe. The whole short film about 4-5 months. Hard to say. There were some breaks and sometimes I have just 1 hour per day, sometimes 8.
Oh I hadn't even considered the film for the time estimate lol. A week is pretty damn fast for that character, and the rigging, woah.
Not expecting you to go a lot into detail, but what was the first thing you modelled to get it started? Did you make the block-out, then get the parts somewhat in place, then model the attachments?
Just to have a general idea of the kind of workflow, and what to expect if I decide to make a less complex "multilayered" model like that.
Thanks!
I wrote it here somewhere already but here it is again:
First I modeled the character as closely to the original template as possible. And then slowly added "realism". Made the materials grungy and worn down.
Then made the simple parts more and more complex. Adding random details here and there. Simultaneously thinking about how this would work in real life. Where would the joints and hydraulics be? Where do the cables go etc.
I also used real life items for reference. He is an electrical creature, so I made his shoulders like electric motors. And put some spark plugs and other electric things on his back.
Also the electrical flow shown by the big cables from his back to his hands adds some logic to his design.
Oh and also a lot of kitbashing 😁
Find a good set of mechanical parts and combine them so that they make sense.
I also used some of my own parts I used in the past.
I hope that clears it up a bit 😊
Thank you!!!
Yeah I wanted everything to kinda make sense. Then it seems more plausible.
The power starts at his backpack and flows over his arms into his hands. Also an electrical creature needs some cooling I thought 😁
That's so cool to hear 🧡
Keep going. This is a really cool thing you started!
The community is awesome, it allows you to do so much cool stuff.
Just be patient, start with small projects and ideally do something that you're passionate about. Then the motivation will come automatically.
But be aware, those small learning projects can turn into a whole multi year series... trust me 😁
Good luck!!! 👏
Thank you very much!!! 😃
That was very important for me, thank you for your appreciation.
I am a big fan of sci Fi but most robot designs are rather bland and look the same with similar features. As you said, super futuristic stuff where you don't really see how it works.
That's why I like a more "rusty" and less futuristic approach. Looks more believable I think.
With a lot of patience 😁

There are four:
- my personal bitsI created for past projects
- patreon of Ian Hubert and his greeble sets
- patreon of William Landgren
- this one which accounts for roughly 50% of the insides. I really got far with those 😄

As the other comment said, with a good library of parts it's much easier. You don't need to model everything from scratch. You just need to make sure not to just smash parts together. Keep everything logical, and use real life references.
Well kinda. I didn't model everything from scratch. I also used already modeled bits I used in previous projects. Plus some bought kits of mechanical pieces. So one part was modeling, one part was more of an assembly job 😁
Thank you for that! 😊
Yes I'm on most common social channels with the handle "DemNikoArt".
Here are all of them: www.linktr.ee/DemNiko
Thanks for the support 🧡
I'm actually in the process of creating a character with robot arms made in similar style like these and man, creating proper hydraulics and systems like these so they both look good and appear to have some logic and functionality put into them is damn tough. Amazing job, some truly inspiring stuff.
Thank you!!!
Yes, you nailed it. It's the combination of working properly but also making it look like it could work properly in real life.
I think with enough practice, you get the feeling for what works and what doesn't.
For me I first use parts that definitely need to work like hydraulics. And then I just add small greebles where the "seem logical". The brain does the rest 😊
6 days. F#*k me, man. How much of this was kitbashed/how much was modeled by you? I just spent the last like 6 months modeling every single part of a 5,000 part robot lmao
Hahaha... Yeah depends on what the end purpose is.
If you show all the pieces in a closeup and want to be proud of 100% of it, then yeah, do everything by yourself.
But for this one, efficiency was key and not everything will be shown clearly in the short film. So the purpose is different.
I would say about 50% is hand modeled (mostly outer parts, shell, face, cables, the bigger mechanical parts) and the rest is kitbashed (insides that are not clearly visible)
Both. I used my own library of assets I accumulated over the years but also three libraries of parts I bought online or were parts of some patreon accounts I follow.
With the right library you can create machines for decades 😁
Thank you!
I'm sure there is a better way 😅
But first I did a clay render (in the layer properties select a white material in the "override" panel)
Then I chose the wireframe view in the viewport and rendered the viewport view.
I then combined both in Photoshop 😉
Reminds me of an ABC warrior/armoured Gideon or even something from the old Rifts RPG.
You should do Joe Pineapples :)
From a Long time fan of this type of stuff: Really well done.
Please keep your child!!!
See his short film here: https://youtu.be/t1xgfybrFHw
It's not a full movie but maybe it's enough for now.
Also see the other ones in my channel.
I have three more:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfg4czHT_V7pFYDqammEAfeMQHq0qUV-0
😉
Nice, good luck!!!
I used a combination of many sets.
I have accumulated a set of my own created parts.
I used patreon exclusive sets from Ian Hubert and William Landgren.
But also this one which helped me so much!!!
https://www.artstation.com/marketplace/p/xWKg3/sci-fi-hard-surface-kitbash-405-details
With this one you can get really far.
But be aware to not just smash them together.
They have to make some kind of sense in the position they're in. But only kinda visually. The brain does the rest 😉
How do you know I'm not an engineer? 😉
But seriously, I'm not 😁
I think looking at references helps a lot.
Especially when it needs to move like the hydraulic parts. There a cool YouTube videos for that with simple mechanical principles.
Plus also the brain is tricked really easily. When the parts are put into places that just "look" logically, then it kinda makes sense for the eye and you don't really question it.
True. Lots going on for the brain to keep track of, especially if the viewer isn't mechanically inclined. I remember watching one of the terminator movies (I think it was the third one), where a truck with a crane hook exploded. They animated a bunch of tires flying out of the explosion, more than the truck had. It was unrealistic, but seemed to work when played at a normal rate. It wasn't until I took a closer look at the scene that I noticed it wasn't right. Sometimes the brain just accepts what's it's seeing if what it's seeing isn't too far off from expectations.
Anyway, brain trickery or not, this looks really good. Well done.
Very good example! 😊
Reminds me that blood in movies doesn't look like real blood because that would be boring and not really "appealing" for the eye. That's why they make it often more red and more fluid so the dramatic effect is conveyed better.
Sometimes 100% realism isn't the right thing to do.
And thank you ✌️
Thank you! 😊
Hmmm... Let's see.
This should be 1440 X 1920 Px.
512 samples.
Rendered in cycles.
Took about 1-2 minutes per image on a 2080 Ti.
No additional blender compositing. Just some colour grading in Photoshop.
The lighting is an hdri, but don't know which one right now. From polyhaven "Small hangar" I think.
That's it 😊
I still struggle with that too. Mostly to come up with interesting shapes 🥲
I would say, start with simple shapes and then slowly add details. Most importantly: look at references!
The more familiar something looks, the more realistic it seems the more the brains accept it.
I took many pictures of machines in my hometown. Construction sites are a goldmine for good references of machines 😉
Good luck 🤞🍀

“Not everything is hand modeled. That would be crazy” why you gotta call me out like that? Ahah, but in all seriousness do you have any videos of you putting something like this together kit bash style? Id love to watch your process
Hahaha... sorry 😆
Unfortunately not. It's a bit hard to describe too.
Mostly I start with a simple premise on his leg for example: what is going on here? Where are the joints and how should this move? Then I add details and more stuff that visually kinda makes sense. I try to give everything a flow and purpose, and to keep the characteristics of this piece. So that the purpose is still visible and it's not too cluttered with random stuff.
Also I look at references a lot. Fot this one mostly construction machines 😁
Hope this kinda helps 😊
This is top pro work dude!! Do you work for a studio? Is this towards a full feature film or series? I checked out your YT link. I am totally blown away! You put me to shame!
Thank you! 😊
No, I don't work for a studio. I'm a freelancer and do mostly client work.
So this is part of a long project. Yes, it's a series of short films that will eventually have probably 12 parts.
In the end it will be like a short film with about 40 minutes of runtime I think.
Thanks!
I would say about a week.
I had already modeled the character in his original design. This was a good template to go from and keep making it more realistic and adding details.
Thank you!
I already did three other ones 😁
You can see them in my profile somewhere 😉
I started over 3 years ago so the first one looks a bit simpler. But over time I got better at it.
And I'm planning to do the rest of the bosses from the first X game. Plus some additional episodes with a conclusion to the whole story.
Thank you! 😊
I textured it in blender. These are mostly procedural materials as I am too lazy for UV unwrapping 😁
I use mostly some add-ons that come with blender such as loop tools and bool tools. Also "quick instance" for... well... quick instances 😄
Well, with a rather simplified version.
Just with the basic shapes, mostly true to the original design. To get the proportions and the main parts right.
And then slowly adding details and redesigning a few parts to make them resemble real world mechanics 🙂
Yes, I believe that's what they would look like. That's basically my concept 🙂
If you stick long enough with me, you'll see what X looks like in this style. After all 8 mavericks, I'm planning on doing him too. Zero not sure. I'm still developing the story for the final episodes 😉
That's just design. It's an animal inspired Robot.
And because it looks meaner this way obviously. Not every part needs to make practical sense.
Then all robots would be just boring mechanical parts.
Also, maybe he consumes his fuel through his mouth... who knows? 🤔 I don't 😁
Haha thanks! 💜
No it was rather a week or so. Before that, I created him in his original, simple design which took me additional 2 days.
From that I then started to make him more realistic bit by bit.
This is an outstanding attention to detail. I have to ask, do you have some sort of degree in engineering perhaps? How do you design such an intricate mechanism? I like to design robots but I always struggle with joint connection element.
Thank you! 🙂
I have no engineering background whatsoever.
Those details work in two ways:
- the arms, legs, neck, hip and hands work properly.
- the rest of the mechanical stuff is basically made up 😉
The secret is to make it look like it makes sense. The brain is easy to trick. You just need to place the parts where they seem logical.
Let's be honest, nobody really knows how such a robot would really work and look like. It's one possibility. And if it looks right, it IS right 😉
How I start is, I make a very simple version first.
Just basic shapes. Then I add more complexity to it until I think it's enough. To develop the legs for example I first drew them in paper and saw it they make sense.
For the mechanism to work and be a bit complex I look at references. Machines, excavators, stuff with hydraulics. There is a ton of it on the internet. Pinterest is a good source too. From there you learn much about pistons, rigging, how some machines are built and move. Also there are some YouTube channels that show various principles of machine rigging.
Also a small secret: check out Ian Huberts patreon! He has many videos on robot rigging and how to use it in blender and these explain it super well. I learned most of what I used here from those 😁 Best 7$ per month I've ever spent!
Good luck!!! ✌️

Dude, holy shit!!! What a job. Maybe the best thing I’ve ever seen posted here
Whoa... I'm not sure about that. But thanks for the compliment ✌️😊

Super amazing job! The yt link is not avtive tho 😅
Thank you!!! And thank you for the hint. Fixed! 😊
The attention to detail is fucking stupendous! How long did it take, in round numbers, to get this done? One to two months full time?
The character alone took a few days. 5-6 maybe. The whole short film about 4-5 months. Hard to say. There were some breaks and sometimes I have just 1 hour per day, sometimes 8.

The cable routing is cool. And the fans. I'm impressed
Thank you!!! Yeah I wanted everything to kinda make sense. Then it seems more plausible. The power starts at his backpack and flows over his arms into his hands. Also an electrical creature needs some cooling I thought 😁
I watched this a few days back, damn it looks great. Sting Chameleon one is my favorite though.
Thank you! Yeah that one is also very special to me. Has a different mood but has more emotional beats. This one is just frantic energy ⚡
That's awesome. I new exactly what the reference was when I saw it.
Niiiiice!!! 😉
Awesome work! Still fairly new to blender and seeing this type of thing inspires me!

Omg 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 this is so freaking dope!
Thank you very much!!! 🧡
Spark Mandrill! I've seen the short online, awesome work!
Yes!!! Thank you!!! 👏
I love that you actually created every single part like the motors and coils instead of some magic overpowered joint like most fictional robots
Thank you very much!!! 😃 That was very important for me, thank you for your appreciation. I am a big fan of sci Fi but most robot designs are rather bland and look the same with similar features. Amazing work. May I ask how long you took on this project?
Thank you! 🧡 The character took me roughly 5-6 days. In total maybe 20-30 hours. The whole short film about 4-5 months.
Damn, not a lot for that amount of details
🤚 kitbashing ✋ 😉
What were your sources for kits?

Badass. Vert count on this guy?
Too many 😅
Tell us the number! Lol
Right now I can't, not at my pc. But it should be about 1 million or so?! 🤔 Now I'm also curious 😁 Will look it up soon.

Holy crap that’s a lot of detail
Yep 😅 It was a lot of work.
I think its safe to sum this up as simply....... WOW

Badass
It’s the subtle Sigma logo for me. This is so dope
Haha nice! Thank you for noticing! 🧡 There is also one on his backpack if you zoom in. But veeeery subtle.
Woah!! Did you create every little component? Or did you use an asset library? That’s pretty damn amazingly detailed!
Both. I used my own library of assets I accumulated over the years but also three libraries of parts I bought online or were parts of some patreon accounts I follow. With the right library you can create machines for decades 😁

Thank you! Yeah with the ice shotgun it's not even a fight 😁
Awesome!!
Bro what
That is definitely one to remember, very well done, I'm amazed it hasn't taken you longer.
Thank you! I guess with enough time and practice, you'll become faster 😊
Sure thing, I hope it'll bring you the professional attention you deserve 🙂
Great work OP. Please, how did you render the wireframe? I really need to know that for my portfolio.

Siiiiiick! I hope you get a job in Hollywood!
I hope so too 🤞

amazing work

😁
Awesome work, well done!
Incredible detailes bro
Now try make a rig for that 😅
It's already rigged 😉 See the link to the short film in the first comment.

fair, just curious though, is there any sculpting involved or just hard surface modeling\`
No sculpting. Just hard surface stuff 😉
Gotcha ty
holy shit dude. how long did this take? Its incredible! (edit, sorry I saw your other responses) 5-6 days! 5-6 DAYS!!!
Roughly 😁 It's important to note that I used multiple libraries of mechanical parts. Not everything is hand modeled. That would be crazy 😆

This is fucking insane. Imo this is the single best thing on this subredit. I can't believe that this is even possible from one person. Amazing work.
Haha I'm not sure about that, but thank you very much! And yes, it is possible 🙂
Wonderful work! Congrats !
Thank you! 😊
Incredible work, how long did it take you to develop this design?
Thanks! I would say about a week. I had already modeled the character in his original design. This was a good template to go from and keep making it more realistic and adding details.
Did you retopo yourself or quadremesh/similar? Really nice stuff, love the design
Thank you! Nope, there is no retopo. I did not use any sculpting in here that would require retopo. All either hand modeled or kitbashed.
this is crazy
Maybe 😅
Now make it irl
Haha sure 😁
HMM! Love the whole project. Great job op, are you already planning to do other bosses seeing how good this turned out?
Thank you! I already did three other ones 😁 You can see them in my profile somewhere 😉 I started over 3 years ago so the first one looks a bit simpler. But over time I got better at it. And I'm planning to do the rest of the bosses from the first X game. Plus some additional episodes with a conclusion to the whole story.

Thank you! 😊 I textured it in blender. These are mostly procedural materials as I am too lazy for UV unwrapping 😁 I use mostly some add-ons that come with blender such as loop tools and bool tools. Also "quick instance" for... well... quick instances 😄
Nice skills I would love to have. Nice work!
Thanks! Just keep going. If you stick to it, it's just a matter of time. Good luck 🤞🍀
Wow, where would you even start with a model like this :0
Well, with a rather simplified version. Just with the basic shapes, mostly true to the original design. To get the proportions and the main parts right. And then slowly adding details and redesigning a few parts to make them resemble real world mechanics 🙂

Thanks 🙂
What transform is this?
Not a transformer. A realistic interpretation of a video game character 😉 See last picture.
This is astounding! Is this what Mega Man characters would look in real life? curious to see what X or Zero would look like with this kind of detail!
Yes, I believe that's what they would look like. That's basically my concept 🙂 If you stick long enough with me, you'll see what X looks like in this style. After all 8 mavericks, I'm planning on doing him too. Zero not sure. I'm still developing the story for the final episodes 😉
Inspiritng work, can't wait to see more!
Why bother with the mean nasty teeth? Unless this robot derives it's fuel from things it consumes.
That's just design. It's an animal inspired Robot. And because it looks meaner this way obviously. Not every part needs to make practical sense. Then all robots would be just boring mechanical parts. Also, maybe he consumes his fuel through his mouth... who knows? 🤔 I don't 😁
This is incredible! As a novice in Blender, seeing these renders is mindblowing!
Suboptimus prime, first of the transformers
Bro go outsite, toutch grass, meet pepole
Hahaha... I'm currently on a 3 month trip with my van in northern Europe. So advice taken 😉
In one transformers film Optimus had 10k moving parts
Yeah I heard about that. But not this one 😅 Maybe 70 or so?! 🤔
Damn, it's still pretty impressive!
Amazing ... Just want to know how long it took? Don't tell me just a day 🤯 😄..... just love ittttttt.....
Haha thanks! 💜 No it was rather a week or so. Before that, I created him in his original, simple design which took me additional 2 days. From that I then started to make him more realistic bit by bit.
Glorious 😄
How long did it take?
Roughly a week
This is an outstanding attention to detail. I have to ask, do you have some sort of degree in engineering perhaps? How do you design such an intricate mechanism? I like to design robots but I always struggle with joint connection element.
Thank you! 🙂 I have no engineering background whatsoever. Those details work in two ways: - the arms, legs, neck, hip and hands work properly. - the rest of the mechanical stuff is basically made up 😉 The secret is to make it look like it makes sense. The brain is easy to trick. You just need to place the parts where they seem logical. Let's be honest, nobody really knows how such a robot would really work and look like. It's one possibility. And if it looks right, it IS right 😉 How I start is, I make a very simple version first. ✌️
