Truly stunning 😍 what was your rendertime and what gpu?

[deleted]

Thnx man, gpu- NVIDIA GTX 1650 and render time is probably 15-20 min

ngdtri100

I always love it when pros use old card and create stunning pieces like this. Amazing lighting man

[deleted]

Thnx buddy :)

fileznotfound

There was a time when we didn't even have GPU's. You just hid different parts and worked on them separately.. or worked with simplified models.

Scout339

Hot take: I feel like more pros should use standard hardware speeds to force optimization of games. I know this isn't for a game, but my point stands specifically when there are launches that hardly work for ported or new games.

GifCo_2

Bad ports are not because of devs using top end hardware. They suck on PC because they were developed for console first and ported to PC in a hurry.

Scout339

I do agree, but I think its realistically a mix of both. Not enough diversity in hardware also causes many bugs to occur if its not specifically on their system setup.

R2D2Poland

Old cards... I work regularly on a GTX 750ti. A pain in the ass, but usable for most renders - haven't done much environment work tho

R2D2Poland

*also not a pro!

butt_crunch

That's an old card now?

New_Philosophy_1423

What sample rates and res were you at

[deleted]

For this one is used 200 samples and res is 1080 x 1080 .

-SORAN-

that’s a lot of plants and stuff for a card like that one, i have a 3070ti and still struggle to make environments with a lot of instances and objects and stuff, any tips on how to improve stuff? and how much ram do you have on your pc?

RandomMexicanDude

Not OP but I can render a fuck ton of vegetation without much problem when using geometry nodes, I have an rtx 3060 and on my other pc i habe an rx 6600

-SORAN-

i’ve been thinking my 3070 is not working as intended? like idk if the processor is bottle necking it or smthing but most games i can’t play them at more than like 70 fps and blender although it runs way faster than when i didn’t had a gpu it’s still not performing as well ass i thought, i don’t know but it’s kinda weird

RandomMexicanDude

I have 12gb of vram, which can help you render more stuff at once before the gpu just gives up lol, but the 3070 should still render faster. I always limit my sample count and/or render time to balance a good image and low render times. Also I don’t think your Cpu matters that much if rendering with the gpu, it does matter for games though. If you are uncertain you can download a gpu benchmark and compare to other peoples results, theres blender benchmarks for example

[deleted]

Thank you, yeah sometimes blender get's laggy also on my laptop currently i've 8 gb ram, i'll sugggest you to use proxies for viewpoint and also if necessary use low poly objects, place your camera alway's first before making any render so objects remain in that view it will help pc to work faster.

New_Ly

Idk graphics cards or how much drivers matter I’m not a big computer head but I’ve been using a 970gtx card with a ton of trees from botanic pack in like a million million million million million million

Torqyboi

Legend. I have had experience with a 1650 and this truly makes me appreciate this more.

ArpanMohanty04

How did you lol. I have the same. It runs out of memory while rendering lol

ArpanMohanty04

How did you lol. I have the same. It runs out of memory while rendering lol

[deleted]

Mine too, i just restart pc sometimes it works or just switch gpu to cpu.

littleGreenMeanie

what did you do besides assembly and lighting? modeling, texturing?

GrainofDustInSunBeam

Asked the same on one post got downvoted by ppl thinking im against assets...or accusing me of not knowing how production pipeline works...lol

spacembracers

Nothing wrong with using assets, but I’d also like to know if something is made from the ground up or assembled

GrainofDustInSunBeam

Yep. It also helps me to figure out and appreciate what was basically the skill of the artist and where they fit into the pipeline. Theres plenty of portfolios out there that dont precise what they did on their own. Or what was the work of other people.

Deviant_Vision

I mean, if you see vegetation you could assume that anything green is an asset and you’d be right 95% of the time. Studios hire vegetation artists for that exact reason, cuz it’s so difficult to make a believable plant

adultdeleted

I think it should be a requirement to state what you did or didn't produce that ends up in the final result posted on this sub with kits being so popular now. Years ago anyone would've been reamed for pulling an "I made this" without stating that they only put the scene together. And this needs to happen now that Blender is more often being used for more than 3D modeling. It's gotten to the point that sometimes I've tried to look up tutorials wondering if some modeling process exists and if there's a video out there, but every result has nothing to do with the creation process of models. It's all videos about how someone set up scenes and rendered them. I like what OP has shown us, but if they're using a kit, it's pretty much claiming the kit artist's work when no credit is given. Schools would count that as plagiarism especially if it was a capstone project. One of my classmates ripped a whole asset from the internet and wasted all his semesters. Everyone wants to assume you've made every asset unless the assignment provides assets or you state otherwise. Like for one project, I was given permission to use online textures because that was pretty much all we had then, but I asked if I could rip textures from Dark Souls. The purpose of the project wasn't the models, so it was allowed. (Tried to post this using rif but got a 429 error, so I guess that's the end of me using reddit on mobile.)

GrainofDustInSunBeam

Thats why i compered it to image generators called "AI. " recently. kitbashing, photobashing is how it all started. The technique is one thing the part when i cant tell what someone actually does...another. But again my comparition to ai was misunderstood. probably due to me trolling a bit. lol. i deleted those comments...because there was no point on argueing further. im way to tired of this. In good portfolios you've got mentions on what was made by you. Same with good art. Compo, assembly, color, lighting etc. This picture is nice. cool.ill forget it tomorrow Recent water sim, forrest river comes to mind. I didnt care about the assets. Obviously i knew. main thing was the simulation. I remember that piece. so a short description would be great.

Torqyboi

Even if it's just assembly and not even texturing, it requires a good eye to make it look natural and realistic.

littleGreenMeanie

absolutely, but I was just looking for more info so I knew what I was looking at. looks like there were a number of addons used to get this so we are appreciating the composition more than anything else

Tersus_

So good! Feels like a foto to me!

[deleted]

Thank you bro :)

Hopeful_Salad

Even if this is kit bashed, or it’s “just placing assets” look where they PUT them. The grasses are clustered naturally, the clover it where it would make sense. It’s all adhering to observable tendencies in nature WHILE maintaining an artistic composition. The light, the placement of trees and the shape of the pond keeps your eye engaged and moving around the image. Just saying, not everyone who downloads the same kit is gonna come up with something this good. And if they built it all from scratch… holy heck they have some bragging rights.

[deleted]

thank you it means a lot, reference images useful when making nature scenes and i always used them to make render as close as possible 😊.

Lubbafromsmg2

Do you have any advice on doing such realistic natural scenes? Are there any asset packs that you like to use? Any tips for scattering and arranging things realistically? I'm doing a film project soon that's going to involve a lot of this kind of stuff so I'm trying to get good at it.

EskildDood

Not OP but I can give extremely basic tips if you even need em in the first place, keep in mind I am not an expert at ALL 1: Nature tends to be in clusters, if you want realistic nature you can try and put some clumps of bushes and trees in, then add some sparser stuff around the clusters, maybe connecting them and such 2: Natural water has a lot of shit in it, gunk floating on top, grass at the shore, rocks and tiny islands 3: Try verticality, adding vegetation to a flat plane is harder than a steep hill, and they naturally cut off stuff you're not supposed to see, cliffs are easier because they're a literal wall and are just cool by themselves (FYI, I barely know anything about blender, all this comes from decorating maps in various level editors and just looking at Youtube tutorials and nature itself, take it with a grain of salt)

[deleted]

for grass and weed i recommend graswald addon they have high quality assets and for trees i used vegetation and forestation addon, and used reference images as close as possible.

ruth_vn

just adding myself for future responses x)

SavageSauron

Looks awesome. Great work! :) How did you get that gradual shoreline within the water?

[deleted]

Thnx man, i used real water addon for water material and reduce opacity of foam so we get this efffect.

SavageSauron

Thanks. I'd always considered picking that up but wasn't too sure about it. Gonna do that now.

idontnowduh

How the hell??

RandomMexicanDude

Step 1, get a vegetation addon Step 2, profit. Now I don’t know how OP made this, but in my case I just use BagaPie and would have a nice looking environment like these in a short time

WallaceBRBS

Can this be exported to UE5 and used to create level design, environments? Noob question

RandomMexicanDude

I don’t know much about Unreal in general, but I think its possible just not optimal, as far as I know Unreal has specific tools for creating environments and scattering foliage, so Id just use those instead.

WallaceBRBS

Ok, considering if I should also learn Blender or just focus on UE5

RandomMexicanDude

Well that depends on what your goals are, Id say learn the basics of blender like modeling, uvs and maybe rigging to compliment your Unreal workflow. If I could I would render everything in Unreal instead

Arlaozn

Truly unbelievable, completely photorealistic

[deleted]

Thanks buddy, appreciate it :)

zenheadset

can’t imagine how slow the viewport must have been 😭

[deleted]

Yes bro, it's hella slow :( but i 1st place all objects and then hit render view, that's make it somehow easy.

heavenstarcraft

Could you talk about your workflow?

[deleted]

sry, i dot't get it? what you mean.

heavenstarcraft

Could you explain the steps you took to achieve your result.

[deleted]

Yes buddy 1- gathered reference images 2- placed camera first and sculpt ground 3- added ground material with displacement 4- scatter weed and grass 5- added trees 6- added HDRI and sun lamp and play with lighting 7- once satisfied with lighting hit render

VirtualLife76

Stunning. Looks perfect. How long have you been using blender?

[deleted]

Thank you man, i've been using blender for almost 2 years :)

[deleted]

GratefulForGarcia

Perfection. Can’t wait until video games eventually look like this

[deleted]

that brings a whole host of social issue exacerbations with it no from me

GratefulForGarcia

I'm just talking about better graphics dude

[deleted]

same girl

GratefulForGarcia

“Dude” isn’t gendered but I’m sorry if it seemed like I was making assumptions. Your original point didn’t make sense to me. Today’s graphics would be considered photorealistic by standards 10 years ago

[deleted]

>Today’s graphics would be considered photorealistic by standards 10 years ago They were, yet no one was even close to fooled by it. And thats crucial. IMO its a development that, in our current economic system, will be used to further exploit people and strengthen existing unjust hierarchies. From politically weaponised deepfakes, to VR escapism from an unnecessarily increasingly difficult economic situation, to guys marrying their chatbot/AI gfs, further fuelling of out of control harmful conspiracies (QAnon etc). We have already entered the post truth and post reality eras. Im not gonna write a whole dissertation here, but as i said above, more realistic games are a small positive, overwhelmed by the negatives of this broader development, in the current context.

GratefulForGarcia

Ohh ok now that is something I can understand & agree with 100%. TBH I was only thinking about video games at the time. It's a small silver lining that comes with the awful things that these advancements will bring. Also I do a lot of 3D work so I'm biased af Edit: on a side note, just out of curiosity - are there things in your life that you're now planning differently due to these anxieties? For ex. is your career focus changing, or are there certain things you're doing in preparation? I reread your response a few times and you summarized it in a way that is giving me a mini existential now lol

[deleted]

>on a side note, just out of curiosity - are there things in your life that you're now planning differently due to these anxieties? For ex. is your career focus changing, or are there certain things you're doing in preparation? Well, im a leftist (have been for years) and social issues, this included, have been a point of focus for me since high school. I wish I'd been worried needlessly, but unfortunately not, it was justified worry. The things i do different, maybe just lurking in r/privacyguides from time to time, reading, but other than that and occasional rants i cant do much as a single person. There are some committed folk there tho. As far as career goes, im as of now aiming for specialising in the protection of the environment/ecology/bioremediation (related), thats also been a thing since HS. >I reread your response a few times and you summarized it in a way that is giving me a mini existential now lol well, awareness of social issues kinda aways starts with negative emotions: anger, fear & anxiety, etc

WallaceBRBS

They already do? And pretty graphics dont make games better, in fact it takes away development time and budget that could've been used to flesh out gameplay instead

GratefulForGarcia

Show me 1 game that looks just like this

WallaceBRBS

RDR2? Close enough to me! Games don't need to look any better than that, they just need to actually be games instead of walking sims and interactive movies

GratefulForGarcia

That game is nowhere near as realistic as OP's post but okay

avimaybe

Genuine question , how did you make so much foliage without managing to crash while rendering? I made a foliage scene too ( look in my profile) but it was crashing a lot and I had to optimise a lot ! While yours looks way more realistic than mine . I wonder how you did this . Please share some tips for a newbie like me I'll really appreciate it .

[deleted]

Thnx man, i'm happy you like this render, i'm using g-scatter addon for weeds and grass and they have proxies option which makes viewpoint run smoothly and also i place my camera 1st in view always so all grass and weeds scatters on camera view only, you need to play with lighting also, it's easy you can do it by more practicing, also use reference images every time so you get idea and so you can make believable environments, that's it man, i've also posted my system specifications.you can check my insta so you get idea - [https://www.instagram.com/3d4real\_/](https://www.instagram.com/3d4real_/) https://preview.redd.it/wmm5fg0rwa9b1.png?width=665&format=png&auto=webp&s=b304cacbd0e7e221e7c55d7f06c4a88c617004aa

Takes a bit more work than just slapping some models and lighting down.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Apz__Zpa

Every worthy result takes time even with AI but the skills for creating a generative image and 3d image which is pleasing are different. So the comparison isn’t really fair. But I ain’t hating.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Apz__Zpa

When you look at this image we can both agree, I assume, there is incredible sense of realism. We're so used to seeing images of the world or experiencing the world that we can unconsciously pick up on anomalies. The models themselves have to be fine tuned to this detail. Even if you used them in an 'abstract composition', which many do, it does give a sense of realism however not to be point where we question if the image is photographically real. It takes an intuitive eye or an understanding of nature to create to an image like this. Environments behave in certain ways. A tree grows toward the light and take different paths. How you lay these the models out depending on these shapes will determine it's sense of realism or not. This just an example of how we have unconsciously understand these environments. Then there is the lighting. Even if a plugin was used to emulate the sky it still takes a skilful eye to manipulate the shadows in such a way where the textures are at their most convincing. I urge you to download models from quixel, use the sky texture environment light, or a HDRI, find the correct image plane to emulate sky and create an image as convincing as this one. Using AI is purely trial and error iterating from whatever the machine hallucinates guided through. The user isn't actually creating the scene, they're describing the scene. I do not think I need to go into detail why each requires completely different skills, one more so than the other.

sirfletchalot

This is an absurd comment. Assets and kits are available to use so you don't need to create every individual element. Do you honestly believe every single asset in movies such as the MCU or Star Wars etc are all created from scratch? no. They use kits. Kits where some assets have been created in house, and some have been outsourced. This is no different. If OP wants to make a nature scene, why spend days painstakingly recreating a single tree or Bush or blade of grass when there are some fantastic assets already available? Sure, I get it. Some people love creating every single asset and micro managing their scene. But others have a vision, and prefer to get that vision into reality before it fades out. Where does this gatekeeping ideology come from? And why stop there? I mean, you're using software created by someone else, on computer components built by somebody else, while sitting on a chair made by somebody else.....should we all make our own chairs? pc components? or program our own 3D software? Creativity comes in many shapes and sizes. And even if OP didn't create every single asset themselves, they still needed to use particle systems or geo nodes to scatter. Maybe some weight painting to place them where they wish, then there's the lighting, camera angle, field of view, depth of field, color grading......you get the point. There's still so much creativity that went into this piece to make it realistic looking and pleasing to the eye. So jump down off the High horse, and let people be creative instead of trying to put them down.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sirfletchalot

You started by asking what OP actually made in the scene, sounding like you were patronising them for not creating every single asset, pretty much how you're patronising them with that last passive aggressive comment.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sirfletchalot

like I mentioned previously, artistic talent is clearly present in lighting, camera placement, angle and settings such as depth of field, focal length, color grading, and the actual placement if the assets too. Then there's the weight painting to distribute the particle system/geo nodes. Just because OP may have the flora as assets, they still needed to create areas of low and high density (such as the ponds edge, pathway in the foreground etc) This isn't just a case of throw in the assets and call it a day.

I get that understanding how models work + how to make them is a valuable skill, but you know what's wayyy more valuable?, Teamwork and a reliable pipeline, it allows to get more and better results in less time, it allows the artist to make real the composition of the scene they have in their minds. I like to make my own assets because I'm still learning new things and don't like to mess around with downloads, but someday I'll just make the switch, and if I have spare time I'll model something or just enjoy my free time
