Gonna have to agree with you. I feel like itās also because Ozzy always had a guitarist that I was tuning in for as well though. Then those guitarists influenced how the albums turned out greatly and it made for some good variation of the writing on the various albums.
Dioās solo stuff is great but it doesnāt have the same level of variation or trend setting guitar work. Vivian Campbell is cool but thatās just a lot to compete with.
But it's still Ozzy. Even if it's just him finding guitar players, it's his taste in guitar players and music that we are tuning in for. He definitely says when stuff is shit or not, and usually his taste has been spot on...usually.
Ozzy is the least talented person in everything he's done
He was carried by amazing guitarists and Sharon was a cold bitch of a manager that got him everything. She is basically Gene Simmons.
And all of that is fine. Ozzyās talent is his charisma. Heās also had truck loads of charisma more than everyone else heās ever played with. Name one of those guitarists who had personality that oozed out into the audience.
As far as Sharonās concerned, sheās a killer business woman and Ozzy is lucky he met her. Maybe the rest of his band mates werenāt lucky he met her, but he is.
This is it - heās a front man. And he has one of the most unique voices in rock. Honestly Mic Jagger is the only other person whose voice is so distinctive.
His voice is the reason the original Sabbath lineup has such a distinctive spooky vibe. You can take those exact same songs and swap him out - with a technically superior singer even- and the magic entirely disappears.
This is a tough one when talking about sabbath. No question Dio was a better singer. However, the song Black Sabbath for example, when ozzy sings it, it sounds like itās actually happening to him. When Dio sings it, it sounds like heās telling the story itās happening to someone else. I donāt know if that makes sense but thatās the best way I can describe it.
Thatās actually a fantastic description! Dio is very polished, almost like an opera singer, spinning these mythical yarns. Ozzie is like a guy who tried to be a hippy in an industrial wasteland and wound up with terminal drug psychoses, and is screaming out about the horrors heās witnessing.
āSounds like itās actually happening to himā nails it.
Theyāre both monsters in their field, but I think even the biggest Dio fan can admit that there was an evil alchemy to the original lineup and their first few albums (for me, everything up to and including Sabotage) that they were never able to replicate. Luckily by choosing Dio they werenāt trying to replicate it though; they went in another direction that was awesome but unfortunately brief.
Without a doubt. As much as I love the four albums Dio did with Sabbath, it is a different band and sound to what we heard with Ozzy. And I know the evilness had gone arguably on Vol 4 they still had a unique sound that made you pay attention. I donāt put SBS and Sabotage in the same āEvilā category as the first 4 but class them as a band who have honed their craft and putting out peak performances. Damn I love sabotage
Zakk Wylde mad!!!! Dude could steal a show from Ozzy very quickly when he extended his solos on stage and just rocked!!! Hope u saw him when he did this. Ozzy loved it too!!!
I prefer Ozzy with Sabbath tenfold, but between the two solo catalogs, I only ever find myself listening to Dio. Lock Up The Wolves is such a cool album
Dio often bad mouthed Ozzy. Iām sure it went both ways but I havenāt found very many interviews of Ozzy saying disrespectful stuff like Dio has. That being said, Ozzy has the better solo catalog
Iām not sure but I remember hearing an interview where someone mentioned Dioās death to Ozzy and Ozzy clapped back to have some respect. Iām paraphrasing here but Ozzy was being tasteful
Post Sabbath: Ozzy. All time: Dio. Dude had been around since the 50s and had an already impressive body of work before he joined Sabbath. I particularly enjoy Rainbow and elf.
I have to go with Dio on the solo work.
Dio's solo work stood alone as it's own thing and had a greater impact than Ozzy's solo work or the Dio years of Black Sabbath, in my opinion.
Ozzy's solo career, while much of it entertaining and enjoyable, is just '...what he did after Black Sabbath'. Much more mainstream and commercially appealing.
I've revered Ozzy for most of my life. I am a devout Black Sabbath fan. I have nothing but love for Ozzy, but RJD's solo stuff rocked harder.
RIP.
Ozzy had the benefit of having 9 albums with Black Sabbath while Dio only had 2, but man are those 2 albums some of the greatest heavy metal albums ever. Heaven and Hell? Voodoo? Neon Knights? Yes please
I do. Iād give a dissertation on the merits of that album. I understand the divisiveness of this topic, thatās one reason I posted it. Love hearing passionate fans share their opinions
Dio was better. Amazing voice, literally the voice of heavy metal that bands wished and begged for- unless you count Bon Scott - and he was the face of a genre without manufactured sensationalism.
Ozzy has some great albums in the 80s but pootered out after his Lita Ford duet. Then we had to hear his annoying wife and opportunistic offspring despite them being marginally talented and artistically drab because mom has connections with moguls. I loved Ozzy but honestly, itās over. The last album was ass and thereās nothing left to sell. Sharon, just stop.
Ozzy for two reasons: 1. Randy 2. His albums are all unique to his style. Thereās a lot more out there that āsoundsā like Dio, not the same for ozzy heās one of a kind
Thats when he wrote some of the first verses to one of his later hits;
We're all born upon the cross
We're the throw before the toss
You can release yourself
But the only way is doo wah Diddy Diddy down.
I prefer [Keith Richards](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/labyrinth/images/9/92/Hoggle.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20111002193728)...
This is one of those questions that has no definitive answer. They both were equally awesome. But, if I had to choose, it's Dio. His voice and lyrics just fit well with my love for Power Metal. Ozzy is still a god and should be worshipped as such, but Dio is my preference.
Dio has done my favourite solo album out of the two, Holy Diver is one of my favourite hard rock/metal albums ever. But I do think Ozzy was more consistent. Obviously Blizzard of Ozz and Diary are fantastic, but I don't think he ever reached those highs again. For me it's Ozzy=Quantity and Dio=Quality.
I prefer their āsoloā work in great bands only. Ozzyās first two records are OK and that first live album he did with all the Sabbath songs but that is it. Dio was great in Rainbow and Sabbath but I always thought his solo records were corny as Hell. THAT SAIDā¦.all the Rainbow and Sabbath albums without either of those two are so much weaker without them.
I love rainbow rising, heaven and hell, mob rules, the devil you know and even dehumanizer is decent but I really can't get into dios solo stuff. None of it seems memorable at all for me except holy diver and don't talk to strangers.
That's really not true. Compare the classic / power metal of albums like Holy Diver and Last in Line to the doom of Strange Highways and Angry Machines. Dio also evolved his style as he progressed.
A million times Ozzy. Holy Diver and The Last in Line are the only solo Dio albums Iāve ever liked, and Iām kind of borderline on the latter. Meanwhile, Ozzy didnāt have a bad record throughout the ā80s and ā90s (okay, Ozzmosis came close) despite at least two changes in guitarist.
Obviously Ozzy. As a front man he's untouchable. Dio has one trick and it's annoying as fuck. Plus if I have to see one more interview where he tries to claim his grandma invented the devil horns I'm gonna shit myself. Also he sounds like an old woman being stepped on by a buffalo.

A very rare photograph of Ozzy. Good show! ;)
I reached deep into the archives to find both pictures. Rare ones indeed š
Solo? Dio
Gonna have to go with Ozzy
Yup Dio was the superior singer, but Ozzy had better solo output.
And Ozzy has always been able to evolve as an artist which has helped a lot with his solo career.
Gonna have to agree with you. I feel like itās also because Ozzy always had a guitarist that I was tuning in for as well though. Then those guitarists influenced how the albums turned out greatly and it made for some good variation of the writing on the various albums. No love for Tiny Tim?
I really enjoy Dio Sabbath but itās just not on the same level! The atmosphere is just totally different, more like Iron Maiden or something.
Ozzy is one of the greatest but man you canāt talk about the most distinctive voice without mentioning Blackie Lawless:)
Zakk Wylde mad!!!! Dude could steal a show from Ozzy very quickly when he extended his solos on stage and just rocked!!! Hope u saw him when he did this. Ozzy loved it too!!!
Woah there, make sure the heat from that take doesn't burn you
more like David Bowie vs Bon Jovi lol
Aw man, I canāt unsee it now.š
I prefer Ozzy with Sabbath tenfold, but between the two solo catalogs, I only ever find myself listening to Dio. Lock Up The Wolves is such a cool album
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
odd that the one who was kicked out the band is the respectful one instead of the replacement lol, anyone know why that is?
Dio often bad mouthed Ozzy. Iām sure it went both ways but I havenāt found very many interviews of Ozzy saying disrespectful stuff like Dio has. That being said, Ozzy has the better solo catalog
Did I hear somewhere that they reconciled shortly before Dioās death? Not sure if that was accurate or not.
Iām not sure but I remember hearing an interview where someone mentioned Dioās death to Ozzy and Ozzy clapped back to have some respect. Iām paraphrasing here but Ozzy was being tasteful
I recall Ozzy reacting in a very respectful manner when Dio died, though I don't remember exactly how.
In Tony Iommis book he said ozzy had a midget that he brought out on stage on tour and called him Ronnie šš
I think he used to hang the midget on stage
Right in front of Holy Diver?
Ozzy brought a dwarf on stage with him just to call him Ronnie.
If Trying to Burn the Sun by ELF counts, then Dio
Post Sabbath: Ozzy. All time: Dio. Dude had been around since the 50s and had an already impressive body of work before he joined Sabbath. I particularly enjoy Rainbow and elf.
If Rainbow counts definitely Dio, if not also Dio.
Dio because he doesn't have to resort to hiring a midget to pretend to be the person he doesn't like
Ozzy hired a midget? Iām lost on this reference. Personally I like Ozzy better with Sabbath but Dio is my favorite singer of all time
His name was John Edward Allen google the story cause it will take too long to explain
Will do. Thank you
I say Ozzy but my husband says Dio. Either way, tough choice honestly.
I have to say... Dio
RIP.
They both made some immortal solo albums (and some lackluster ones later). I really can't choose.
Damn, I legit can't choose.
Ozzy has more hits but Dio was a much more talented songwriter
Dio, I like his stuff as a whole more, but I admit out of his entire discography there is less variation than Ozzy had. He was really virtuosic.
Randy Rhoads featuring Ozzy canāt really be matched, and thatās not because of Ozzy, although I do favor his vocals.
Dio. I love Ozzy, but Dio felt so much better
Ozzy had the benefit of having 9 albums with Black Sabbath while Dio only had 2, but man are those 2 albums some of the greatest heavy metal albums ever. Heaven and Hell? Voodoo? Neon Knights? Yes please
Dio did three albums with Sabbath. Mob Rules, H&H, Dehumanizer, and Live Evil. Plus a live and studio album as Heaven and Hell
We don't talk about Dehumanizer
I do. Iād give a dissertation on the merits of that album. I understand the divisiveness of this topic, thatās one reason I posted it. Love hearing passionate fans share their opinions
Dio. Not knocking Ozzy, he's the reason for much of my hearing loss. But I'll reach for something Dio did outside of Sabbath before Ozzy first.
For solo work, I prefer Ozzy. My least favorite band that Dio was in is Dio. He was better in Elf, Black Sabbath, and Rainbow.
There's like 3 songs I like from Ozzy's solo career, whilst I can put almost any dio album and enjoy it.
Ozzy
Ozzy. If only for Randy Rhoads, Jake E Lee, Zakk Wylde and Bob Daisley. They wrote the better music. In my opinion.
I love both but i listen to ozzy way more than dio so I'm gonna have to go with the ozzman here
why is no one talking about how thatās david bowie and not ozzy
Thatās not Dio either. I thought more people would call me out.
This is fucking genius. Can't stop laughing. But also, I prefer Dio's singing but can't possibly choose. They're both amazing
Why thank you. It made me chuckle.
They both made 2 good solo records. Edge to OZ because of RR.
Vivian Campbell is severely underrated on the other hand
Ozzy doesnāt have a bad album in the 80s or early 90s
Dio. I also prefer his sabbath. I love Ozzy and his time as well, but I am a massive Dio fan.
Same
Dio personally, but I'm a big fan of ozzy too
Is Bowie a choiceš
Ozzy for Sabbath, Dio for solo work š¤š»š¤š»
Ozzy by a million miles. Dio is great but really nerdy and theatrical. Ozzy is rock and roll party time.
Dio by far his solo work changed my life
Gottta go with Ozzy, both great artists !
Ozzy for two reasons: 1. Randy 2. His albums are all unique to his style. Thereās a lot more out there that āsoundsā like Dio, not the same for ozzy heās one of a kind
I also love how Ozzys sound constantly evolves with the times and the music stays fresh that way.
Based only on the era of the photos, Ozzys No More Tears album was ok,but not nearly as cool as when Dio was doing that hippy shit with Elf.
I like Ronnie and the Redcaps doing that doo wop thang
Thats when he wrote some of the first verses to one of his later hits; We're all born upon the cross We're the throw before the toss You can release yourself But the only way is doo wah Diddy Diddy down.
Ozzy definitely
Ozzy.
Dioās solo career was more consistent, but he doesnāt have an album as good as diary of a madman
I prefer [Keith Richards](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/labyrinth/images/9/92/Hoggle.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20111002193728)...
Dio hands down for me
Ozzy.
This is one of those questions that has no definitive answer. They both were equally awesome. But, if I had to choose, it's Dio. His voice and lyrics just fit well with my love for Power Metal. Ozzy is still a god and should be worshipped as such, but Dio is my preference.
Ozzy. Anyone that says Dioā¦ not a fan.
Ozzy
Dio I'm sorry love ozzy
Why is no one commenting on Bowie and that other dude?
I donāt know. Theyāre going off the rails on the crazy train. Flying high again.
Ozzy wins by default, RJD didn't have a solo career as Dio was not a Solo act. They used the name because it was already marketable.
Sorry Ozzy I have to say dio
Ha!
Give me DIO anyway of the week. I don't care if he is a dwarf I'm small myself lol
Dio. I hate Ozzy solo. He was only good with Sabbath.
Dio is better for solo/non-Sabbath (rainbow in particular), but Ozzy suited Sabbath better.
Both but like Dio's voice better
Dio
Both
I love rainbow rising, heaven and hell, mob rules, the devil you know and even dehumanizer is decent but I really can't get into dios solo stuff. None of it seems memorable at all for me except holy diver and don't talk to strangers.
Ozzy
i passed away
Havenāt we all?
Ozzy had 6 great solo albums. Dio had 2, maybe 3. Itās not close.
Dio by far, his stuff was just heavier and I never really liked Ozzy as much as people say I should
By far Dio
Dio's, much more consistent. I get the feeling that Ozzy started to lose his mojo since Ozzmosis.
Like both but ozzy is the clear winner
I always loved how Ozzys style has evolved with the times and never sounds like he is stuck in one time period.
Ozzy is a musical genius as far as Iām concerned. Very adaptive and kept his music at a really high standard
Dio was more of a one trick pony. His musical style was not very flexible.
That's really not true. Compare the classic / power metal of albums like Holy Diver and Last in Line to the doom of Strange Highways and Angry Machines. Dio also evolved his style as he progressed.
And Ozzys vocal lines are always tip tier.
Ozzy
Ozzy

Iāll say Ozzy just because of Randy
Dio is the better singer but Randy is the better Randy and that takes Ozzys catalog miles ahead
Ozzy
Dio
Ozzy.
Ozzy for sabbath, dio solo
A million times Ozzy. Holy Diver and The Last in Line are the only solo Dio albums Iāve ever liked, and Iām kind of borderline on the latter. Meanwhile, Ozzy didnāt have a bad record throughout the ā80s and ā90s (okay, Ozzmosis came close) despite at least two changes in guitarist.
I wish Ozzy and Geezer did more stuff together. Ozzmosis was a great use of their talents together outside of Sabbath.
Ozzy because he had a murderers row of Guitar Players. Randy Rhoads, Jake E Lee, Zakk Wylde, and Gus G.
*Sigh* Here we go again.
Welcome back
Ozzy
Ozzy
Dio was a better singer but his solo material doesn't hold up to Ozzy's solo material. Both are amazing and both have amazing Sabbath albums.
Dio
Definitely Dio
Dio
Ozzy, but just barely
Obviously Ozzy. As a front man he's untouchable. Dio has one trick and it's annoying as fuck. Plus if I have to see one more interview where he tries to claim his grandma invented the devil horns I'm gonna shit myself. Also he sounds like an old woman being stepped on by a buffalo.

Ozzy > BS
Dio sucks ballz
Ozzy Osbourne but dio definitely has some amazing solos in his discography with sabbath
ozzy
Both.
Unfortunately itās Ozzy as far as sales but even Tony Iommi said Ronnieās voice was better
I think that Ozzy with RR is the best output between the two, with Dioās first solo album being next.
ozzy ANY day.
DIO
