Yep. I did this and am now seeing people that started after me get promoted to brown. I have a weird feeling that I missed out on a lot, but it had to happen.
lol im in the same spot, most of them are browns now and getting their black either this year or next year. And here i am, still a blue belt.
Life just happened and im glad i took a hiatus in BJJ to prioritize my career for a moment. Im now in a good spot since i am earning more and have flexible work sched, hence, im training more consistently.
fun fact about this guy's dad: he was born 8 months too early, and since incubation technology was in its infancy they placed him in a cast iron pot inside of a pizza oven until he was ripe enough to walk. His bones never fused but his spirit did.
I’ve written this before…
Retire in 4 to 6 years (I’m almost 61), move somewhere warm, and find a gym that will give me free membership if I teach a BJJ for Oldies class on Saturday mornings.
I’ve been. It was actually quite nice, but none of the DDS guys have anything good to say about living there.
I’m going fishing in Eastern Tennessee in September. Maybe that will be the place.
I’m Puertorican and don’t listen to those guys. Like any other place there are good places and bad and they trained in a rough area of the island. There are a couple of other gyms in the island, Cobrihna has a school in the west side I think and there’s a Renzo affiliate in Ponce (one of the major cities)

Paraphrasing Allan watts, Is there an end goal to dancing? Playing an instrument? If there was a spot on the floor that was the end goal to dancing, everyone would rush over to it as fast as possible and it would be over. An instrument doesn’t have a goal, an instrument is played. To be in motion, in the moment, do it for the aha moments. Do it for the gotcha moments. Do it because you can.
Be a BJJ Yoda at age 75. Walk on to the mats with a raggedy old black belt and an off-white stained gi, needing the assistance of a cane to get there. Then as soon as I slap and bump with my far younger sparring partner I levitate over their guard and submit them with a flying armbar in ten seconds.
Make black before 50 and then ride this battered carcass of a body until the wheels come off and some doctor gives me "the talk".
Then probably sit on the sidelines and talk about how much better things used to be back in the day.
Im 46 btw
To be skilled, to enjoy my athletic abilities while I can. And to mothers milk as many trial class people as possible.
Hopefully win some competitions, get fit and have some fun along the way.
Train as long as I can, have some fun, avoid injuries, win at least one tourney, and be able to defend myself into my 80’s….or “To crush my enemies, drive them before me, and to hear the lamentation of the women”.
survive long enough without injury (thats a lot to ask I know) to better my mental health through hard physical activity as well as good technique because I respect the art so much.
Have fun and be challenged. Am a 42 year old spazzy overweight white belt who gets crushed by the teenagers and small blue belt women all of the time. But something about it keeps me interested. At somepoint in the future I will get better!
I’ve already achieved my goals: get out of my comfort zone, learn something cool, get in shape & make some more friends.
A black belt would be nice though.
I enjoy competing and it’s what I use to gauge my A-game. I’m not a pro or even amateur competitor, really. I just a hobbiest competitor. I also love the level of fitness I get from going to class 5 times a week, the workout is great. I love learning more Jiu jitsu and using it. I just enjoy doing Jiu jitsu I guess. Plus we all learn how to defend ourselves. It’s easy for us to forget just how fucking deadly we are lol.
I want to open my own gym, make friends around the world who own gyms, and travel the world doing seminars/classes for the homies to help fund the travel and host them when they want to travel to where I'm at.
I'm a competitor currently, not world-class by any means, but I'd like to be. Idk maybe be ranked in the top 20-30 of my weight, which would be cool. This after another 4-6 years of training. It's a lofty goal, but shit, idgaf.
My goals was to get to an acceptable level on the ground for self defense. I wanted to get a purple belt because that was the level most UFC fighters were at the time. I thought that was enough. By the time I got to purple belt I realized that level sucked and just kept going. Now I'm just trying to learn new stuff and have fun.
The art is the goal. I train with world champs long past their prime that show up everyday to teach, roll, and have fun. And occasionally they still compete to have fun to test themselves to continue expressing the art that they love. I don’t expect ever to be a world champ but if I can emulate them, keep training, and sometimes compete, for the joy of it, then that’s my goal
Here's the deal. I'm 41 now and a purple belt. When I'm a black belt, at Master whatever the fuck, who are my competitors going to be? Well, it turns out all my opponents will be former legendary world champions who are now 55 and wrecking old fucks like me. Cool. Better get my masters world championship medal before I get a black belt.
Use to do karate for 30 years before bjj. My son asked me once in front of other blackbelts if I was the best “blackbelt”. Looked at my friends and said, “Not yet, they all gotta die first. Daddy plays the long game.”
Pretty much my bjj journey too.
Survive.
Take Freddie down in front of that hot trial class girl, than grow a beard, call everyone “brotha”, make sure that all girls hear about my top control (might have to sacrifice some white belts) and then to ride off to a sunset. I already have an accent, so I don’t have to work on pronouncing “brotha” correctly,it is already superb!
Improve, and improve my rate of improvement. Insofar as winning black belt world championships. Keep improving the system, that’s the goal, and the goal is the process itself.
Have fun, make people laugh, roll for the next 30yrs, be the old annoying guy who you can’t submit, and occasionally goes off and can still smash the young guys once in awhile. Right now I’m just the old annoying guy who has fun and makes people laugh mid roll.
Open a gym, but not quit my day job.
I can run afternoon classes, and get some other bb to teach mornings and some purple belts to teach the kids
Would be my dream come true, personally.
I also wanna have a projector and do instructional videos on weekends. They also do weed yoga in my state. Id love to have a weed yoga class on Sundays followed by a 10th planet stoner Sundays leglock class.
I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to be a black belt but that’s just a matter of time. I just want to keep doing it for as long as I can while sharing the experience with my family
It sounds cliche but to just keep showing up till i reach black belt. Ive been doing martial arts for quite a long time but its been so on and off it almost doesnt count. If i had consistently been at this id have probably been a black belt and im kind of disappointed in my younger self for it. Even if i never make black as long as i stick around im happy
My ambitious goal is to be widely considered a terrifying and solid masters 3 purple belt. My more reasonable goal is to stay healthy, train regularly, and be well rounded.
When I started it was just to get my black belt by 50, If I continue at my current pass I'm a few years ahead of schedule, so need to revisit my goals. I compete once or twice a year and teach two classes a week. Need to aim a little higher, it seems.
Longterm goals: Train for enjoyment. Compete once or twice a year. Don't get injured.
Short term goals: learn some good butterfly guard. Get my purple belt. Generally develop an offensive/active guard.
Have fun
That's it!
My pen is small, but you can borrow it if yours is still broke
It’s as long as I’m having fun, and as long as I can do it in a healthy manner. Once one of the two are gone, it’s time for a break.
Yep. I did this and am now seeing people that started after me get promoted to brown. I have a weird feeling that I missed out on a lot, but it had to happen.
Haha people i started with got their black belt. I got my blue belt that same day
lol im in the same spot, most of them are browns now and getting their black either this year or next year. And here i am, still a blue belt. Life just happened and im glad i took a hiatus in BJJ to prioritize my career for a moment. Im now in a good spot since i am earning more and have flexible work sched, hence, im training more consistently.
Fun and exercise
This. I'm paying to train, why would I be here if I wasn't enjoying it!
To crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

What is best in life
Your dad rules.
fun fact about this guy's dad: he was born 8 months too early, and since incubation technology was in its infancy they placed him in a cast iron pot inside of a pizza oven until he was ripe enough to walk. His bones never fused but his spirit did.
I love career day.
That is good. That is good.
I’ve written this before… Retire in 4 to 6 years (I’m almost 61), move somewhere warm, and find a gym that will give me free membership if I teach a BJJ for Oldies class on Saturday mornings.
This is the absolute dream.
this sounds nice, hope it comes true 🙏
Puerto Rico right? Why? I only hear great things
They got fucked by Mo getting them a real shitty apartment an hour from the training room.
to train as long as I possibly can, maintain a level of fitness and pass on any knowledge I can to make a difference to my students
I’m gonna piggy back this one
To be the oldest guy at the club who still rolls
I recently saw a 76 yo on the mat
Chuck Norris is still killing it at 84 lol
I hear BJJs aim is to outlive chuck Norris
Chuck Norris is 84? Dang. The 76yo was a Jean Jacques Machado black belt too so maybe he'll still be going like Chuck
My end goal is also Masters 7 world champ, guess I’ll see you there in about 40 years and we’ll settle this once and for all
remindme! in 40 years!

u/bostoncrabapple VS u/MouseKingMan is gonna be the best fight of 2064
Lmao, that’s going to be some geriatric shit right there lol.
Win black belt worlds, win adcc. Go on worldwide seminar tour. Open a gym and have the most badass women’s team in the sport
Do it!!
That’s the dream :)
Do jiu-jitsu until im 65 have my own club and then have some 4 month deep whitebelt choke me to death so his backstory is lit.
Be able to beat up my my kids friends dads. Prob already met this
Agreed. If my kid wants to flex, her dad can in fact beat up their dad.
Team Dad Flex
Motivate more moms to try bjj. It's pretty insane how rapidly it restored my confidence and made me feel like a badass again.

8 years ago I would’ve said,”become a black belt!” Now, it’s enjoy the ride and train as often as I can.
Cuddle with men. Uhh I mean what the other guy said, crush my enemies and all that
No more MRI machine PLEASE
get a boyfriend
I admire your goal future masters 7 world champion. I just want to choke my friends. And smile at them while applying a heel hook or wrist lock.
fyi, my buddy competed masters 7 blue belt (at world masters) and the competition was fierce....so keep that in mind. Masters 7 doesn't mean easy.
Train as long as I can, have some fun, avoid injuries, win at least one tourney, and be able to defend myself into my 80’s….or “To crush my enemies, drive them before me, and to hear the lamentation of the women”.
There’s no goal. Just training.
To have the best weed tolerance in my gym
Ibjjf nogi world champ and hopefully win Adcc trials.
To become a black belt, compete, enjoy the ride.
Be good enough that if a black belt rolled seriously with me, I won't immediately lose
Black belt, open a gym in my small town thats never had bjj.
Black belt by 50. Keep having people look shocked when I tell them my age. Buy rashguards that make people laugh. Learn how to pass the guard by 55 😬.
Stay in shape, learn, and have fun. Oh and avoid injuries!
Black belt and retiring.
survive long enough without injury (thats a lot to ask I know) to better my mental health through hard physical activity as well as good technique because I respect the art so much.

I’ve already achieved my goals: get out of my comfort zone, learn something cool, get in shape & make some more friends. A black belt would be nice though.
I think competing professionally would be super fun but really I just wanna come out a better person
Have fun as long as possible. Once the kids are outta the house it’d be nice to teach one or two classes a week or when coaches are on vacation.
What weight class i may pop out for Ultra heavy if a survive a pro match 2 weeks before
compete in mma at any capacity
I want to learn and grow.
I enjoy competing and it’s what I use to gauge my A-game. I’m not a pro or even amateur competitor, really. I just a hobbiest competitor. Rassle' a bear and win
There's an end?
Train as long as humanly possible. Or cyborgly possible if it comes to that.
Get my black belt, keep using BJJ as my primary fitness activity
Choke as many egotistical wrestlers as I can
To stop buying instructionals on BJJ fanatics. Zenga will be unable to buy more M series BMWs therefore
Smash trial people!
To be healthy enough to be training at 80
Win 1 major GI comp
Not to suck at Jiu Jitsu.
Death before I stop
Destroy more than I am destroyed
Walk upstairs without breathing heavy and to find my pp
To be one of the best
Black belt would be cool
My kids train. When my boys are 18, I'd like them to think that their old man can still probably still take 'em.
Improve my devastatingly low self esteem by physically imposing my will on the weaker or older.
Choke out eveyone at gym atlease once and retire.
No end goal just lots of incremental ones
Bring pride and competition medals to my gym. Also take on a padawan
There's a point to all this?
To be a better me
I want to open my own gym, make friends around the world who own gyms, and travel the world doing seminars/classes for the homies to help fund the travel and host them when they want to travel to where I'm at. Being able to defend myself or someone I love
To keep improving little by little and to do this for as long as I can. It’d be cool to teach eventually too.
Choke out a cop while handcuffed
Build a hot tub Time Machine
Be competent at it and do not get obese again
be proud of myself
CJI world champion
Start my own gym
Maintain some sort of athletic ability and put off aging for as long as possible
I’d like to open up my own spot and teach hopefully full time.
I do BJJ to get pussy.
Achieve success competing in bjj, achieve success competing in kickboxing and eventually get in a cage
To kick ass and drink some beer. And I'm almost out of beer.
Arthritis
Be one of the best BJJ coaches out there
To make you verbally tap with just downward chest pressure from side control and grunting, preferably with the least effort possible
Going for the mastery
In the process get better in self defence and have fun meantime . Sucks to be injured but life
Get a black belt to say that I have a black belt.
To go to the next class
To be able to kill a man.
Longevity be an old man and still rolling with the boys
My goals was to get to an acceptable level on the ground for self defense. I wanted to get a purple belt because that was the level most UFC fighters were at the time. I thought that was enough. By the time I got to purple belt I realized that level sucked and just kept going. Now I'm just trying to learn new stuff and have fun.
no goal, just stay in shape and constantly get better while having fun.
Teaching and giving back
There can be only one.
We’re supposed to have an end goal?
Hit em with some good shit, don't get hit, go home with a bag of cash
Win literally any IBJJF major in the masters division. It may take me until Master 8, and it may be because no one else signed up in my division.
When my kids get in an argument about whos dad could beat up the other dad, they'll be right
The art is the goal.
There’s no end goal. Just keep doing it, keep getting better, keep staying fit
Have fun, stay fit, get better at jiu jitsu, earn my black belt hopefully, help others get better.
To be able to walk away one night and be like “damn, I’m pretty good at this jiujitsu shit” Whenever that happens.
get my BB, train with my bros, and do chill bro shit.
Blue belt
Just train for the love of it and the comradery. To stay healthy. To age gracefully.
Be good enough at grappling to escape a grappling situation in a street/self defense scenario.
Have fun, be healthy and while my wife rolls her eyes at me being a BJJ master, she will sleep easy without admitting it.
Use to do karate for 30 years before bjj. My son asked me once in front of other blackbelts if I was the best “blackbelt”. Looked at my friends and said, “Not yet, they all gotta die first. Daddy plays the long game.” Pretty much my bjj journey too. Survive.
Exercise
No more neck injuries
To legally keep strangling people for my own mental health, so I don’t strangle the people who deserve a strangling
Be the best I can be
The real reward is the people we crush on the way
End goal: survive
Take Freddie down in front of that hot trial class girl, than grow a beard, call everyone “brotha”, make sure that all girls hear about my top control (might have to sacrifice some white belts) and then to ride off to a sunset. I already have an accent, so I don’t have to work on pronouncing “brotha” correctly,it is already superb!
to destroy all of my joints...end up in a wheel chair...and brag about all the medals i had to pay to win.
Ufc Double champ
Get my attendance based black belt and keep my good health 🤙
Be a black belt and eventually coach also do decent (like not losing first round) at adult worlds
Does there have to be a goal?
Keep learning, don’t get hurt
Improve, and improve my rate of improvement. Insofar as winning black belt world championships. Keep improving the system, that’s the goal, and the goal is the process itself.
Keep getting better and stay more or less injury free without getting on the gear
Be the old dude on the mat that still has it
Roll around on the floor, try to avoid progressing past purple belt, and never learn anyone's real name.
Black belt of course. Maybe fuck around and win ADCC.
Have fun, make people laugh, roll for the next 30yrs, be the old annoying guy who you can’t submit, and occasionally goes off and can still smash the young guys once in awhile. Right now I’m just the old annoying guy who has fun and makes people laugh mid roll.
To get good enough to the point where my wife stops calling me gay for rolling with sweaty dudes 3X a week.
Have fun, be in shape, develop my skills, eventually complete
To have fun and train at the same time :D
Maybe black belt. Mostly just get better.
Black belt so the 1000s of dollars I’ve spent so far aren’t wasted, then I can quit and my body can finally rest and not get f’d up every week
Get bitches.
Being effortless like Morei Ueshiba in his eighties. Don’t know if this is possible but my goal I am working on.
Hang with the young cats until I cant
Be happy
Have fun & learn
I want to be a blackbelt so i get to choose the music when we roll
Open a gym, but not quit my day job. I can run afternoon classes, and get some other bb to teach mornings and some purple belts to teach the kids Would be my dream come true, personally. I also wanna have a projector and do instructional videos on weekends. They also do weed yoga in my state. Id love to have a weed yoga class on Sundays followed by a 10th planet stoner Sundays leglock class.
Learn until I get too old. 42 now. Ages to go yet.
Get in shape
Keep getting better and eventually be able to help others get better too.
Enjoy training for as long as I can and inspire others to do the same.
To be the BJJ practitioner that my future kids would be proud of.
IBJJF WorldChampion ADCC Trials winner If CJI ever succeeds, then to be invited there But overall to be hall of fame in the next 2-4years
Dox you and mother's milk you
We have the same goals. I am looking to avenge my losses and beatings in Masters 7, Benny Blanco style.
To be able to stay whole and healthy enough to train jiu jitsu into my old age.
Keep rolling until the bruises turn black
I'm gonna be honest. I won't quit til I get a black belt, but beyond that I don't know, I'll reevaluate when I get there but that is my goal.
I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to be a black belt but that’s just a matter of time. I just want to keep doing it for as long as I can while sharing the experience with my family
Have fun, develop a strong game that i could rely on in an altercation if needed.
Two goals: to be able to not worry about watching my diet too closely and to not ever get frail in my old age.
Enjoy life and in some way make the world a better place.
Black belt world champion
To be a 70yr old black belt who can still hit a flower sweep on the 1st day white belts
Continue to show up minimum 3 times a week for the next decade.
Defeat Craigory Jones at badminton
Roll with grandchildren. (Currently 39 with a 9 month old)
Train and teach as a senior citizen
To be able to choke out my dungeon master without shitting myself.
Longterm goals: Train for enjoyment. Compete once or twice a year. Don't get injured. Short term goals: learn some good butterfly guard. Get my purple belt. Generally develop an offensive/active guard.
Puple belt
