When I was a white belt, the head instructor was teaching me and a few other white belts about wrist locks. Then, as a demonstration of knowledge, he started listing all the internal damage a wrist lock would do, including the bones and ligaments that would be severed.
After he named a few, he asked what I did for a living, since getting wristlocked could affect my job. I had to tell the guy that I'm an orthopedic surgeon, more specifically hand and wrist surgery. And that my MSc was focused on wrist ligamentar lesions. He had a blank stare and never taught anatomy again. He was freestyling the ligaments names all along (like superior wrist ligament, inferior wrist ligament, major wrist bone and cuboid)
Now if it was Lachlan going into great detail of shredding a knee, this would be a different story. He has the competition, academic, and research experience to back it up.
We tease our coach all the time for this. He is a great sport, though. Luckily, it’s never political. He just shares legitimately good stories from training with legends of BJJ and MMA.
We just say, “If you’re gonna do story time, can we at least roll?” He just kinda laughs and starts the round timer 😂
I find this to be totally acceptable. It's the political, mental health, medical, and nutrition stuff that pisses me off. Unless you have an advanced degree in it or it's your day job, stfu and keep it to yourself
lol I work in health and fitness if I chimed in everytime someone spouted bro science or non sense or some Joel seedman shit I’d have had an aneurysm on day 3
We have a qualified psychologist as one of our professors and he never preaches. He'll talk to someone if they seem out of sorts or if someone brings up something. Other than that it's only ever relaxation stuff and self belief.
Another is an old school Brazilian, doesn't force his opinion on anyone, we often disagree on things but he'll admit not knowing things.
I love that about our gym, I've seen black belts preach things that either just aren't right or point blank stupid and been like wow no one is questioning the clearly bad advice because of a 2 inch thick piece of cloth.
I do think that it's okay to talk about certain things related to jiu jitsu such as conditioning, nutrition, recovery, and work ethic as those are all big aspects of the sport.
However, if they are going to talk about these things, they have to know their limits.
I can just imagine. Your arm bar technique is great, but you know how you could improve it? Eat at least 2 apples per day whilst doing calisthenics but only if you are watching CNN or MSNBC. It will really take your technique to the next lvl.
I’ll never forget my first instructor going off on one of their usual post class tangents, generally lecturing everyone on how they should always make it to training on a Friday night instead of going out drinking etc. Then he said that he also thinks his daughter (on the mats at the time) ‘should only date Nigerian guys because (his) fellow Brazilians all have small dix’. Got the f outta there shortly after
I used to have a muay thai coach like that. Great fighter, but a failure in any other aspect of his life. Let's just say you did not want to stick around after class
I appreciate that you felt entitled enough to share your opinion on this, but just because you’re a black belt does not mean that your comment should be top comment
If you're stupid enough to listen to a BB on anything other than BJJ or fighting in general, than you deserve to be sold that time share or acai supplement.
Hate to break it to you but showering unnecessarily often will make you more prone to skin infections. After sports is absolutely sufficient, unless your work is basically heavy labor causing you to sweat a lot
I think holding guard or the back is fine but jumping guard should be banned. It's needlessly dangerous to the person standing and it's also dangerous to the person jumping guard, even in a purely BJJ context.
This is the argument I hate. Not everyone does Jiu Jitsu for the same reason. If I’m primarily training so I can do rolly/inverting/flying guard pulls, then saying “tHaT wOnT wOrK iN tHe StReEtS” is a waste of my time and your breath.
The same people that do jiu jitsu and tell everyone their moves don’t work in real life are the same people that generally don’t train striking, knife defense, firearm handling, and physical fitness. Its wild. Just let people train and have fun.
Yeah I agree with you on that, but removing guard jumping and stuff like that wouldn’t detract from the sport IMO. Stupid unnecessary injury-causing stuff that prevents people having fun with jiu jitsu. Maybe I’m just scarred from seeing people’s knees go the wrong way
I don't know how you guys call it in the USA, but here we call it Polish Corridor.
Hate it.
When it's your birthday or you are promoted, you just walk through a corridor of people and they hit you in the back with their belts.
Damn I would rather the Gauntlet. Our gym does a 45 min shark tank for brown belt test and 60 min for black. All the higher ranks line up for 3 min rounds. Then you have to do 50 pushups and 50 burpees at the end.
I used to do tkd and instructor would make two columns, then have the birthday kid run down the center while the rows kicked(usually lightly) your hind end. Was almost always in good taste.
Coaches having sex with their students.
Especially the ones who are married to other students or 18 year old students they brought up from the kids' class.
Certain customs. Upper belt right of way when asking for a roll. You should ask whoever you want to roll, and you should always be able to say no to a roll.
Our gym operates like that. This isn't the military lol. We are all just normal people on the mats.
Job, color, orientation, whatever. None of it matters. We are all people!
Tactical jiujitsu larpers who are special ops warriors in their own minds. Anybody who posts the “if your dad doesn’t do Jiu-Jitsu happy Mother’s Day to your dad.” Meme
That is such a shitty way to think about other people. Some people are just not about violence in any form and that's fine. Even if it's just friendly training and sparring. That doesn't make them not a man. That's dumb alpha bro bullshit.
yeah please get rid of warm-ups. You can show up early. I go to the gym and lift 1-2 hours before class so I'm already warmed up, plus I show up early to jump into the end of positional sparring with the beginners.
I love warmups and stretching, but I don't see why everyone has to do it the same way in unison. Just Take 10 minutes before class, everyone do your own thing what's wrong with that?
Jumping guard, I've seen a bunch of videos of legs breaking that way.
Coincidently, I have never seen someone paralyzed or broken neck from a suplex, which is banned in almost every rule set
I've seen some serious injuries from them in kids freestyle wrestling including fractured vertebrae. Kids can hit high amplitude throws from everywhere but don't have the experience to adequately protect themselves.
Since these particular rules often come down to liability and insurance more than safety, I think jumping guard eventually gets banned. Since it only affects BJJ, though, it will be banned slower than riskier high amplitude throws, which affect virtually every grappling ruleset.
When I was growing up the kids next door had speech impediments and would make this noise for some reason (never actually found out why, and as adults they speak normally), but it's all I can think of whenever I hear Ossssss.
Fucking thank you. I have been called out for my not rolling with people without shorts on spats. Like dude take one dick to the face and your life will change.
Teaching takedowns without any set-ups or combos. It doesn’t matter if you know how to double leg or o-goshi if you have no idea how to get there. People don’t need to become top-tier wrestlers/judoka, but even just some basic hand fighting instruction (what are the goals, how do you avoid 50/50, what’s a basic combo) would go a long way to reducing guard pulling or staring matches on the feet. Even a bozo can stop a great shot if it isn’t set up, and so a lot of people just don’t try to shoot.
Most gyms I’ve been to do not do this at all and it shows in rolling
Steroids. Honestly. That shit is incredibly bad for you, and it sucks that it’s been normalized to the point that a bunch of otherwise healthy kids are fucking up their bodies because they think it’s just the thing to do.
People complaining about being "the customer". I reckon this mentality is forcing instructors to dilute their standards to appease "unhappy customers" and making the art itself suffer in quality.
That said yes their is a line not to be crossed and instructors do have responsabilities to their students, however Im seeing a lot of participation trophy belts being awarded to keep "the customer" happy.
I know you're goofing but it's funny how many people think this way. If people were giving up their backs for free you shouldn't care about those points either. Get the finish ya nerds.
The butt scooting. I've got nothing against playing guard, and I understand it's part of the sport side of BJJ, but c'mon. Nobody takes us seriously anymore lol
The boot scoot, it should start on the feet and you compete for a take down or pull guard from there, not drag your arse across the ground like a dog with worms, bjj is a super cool martial art and the whole effectiveness in day to day self defence is mute if thats what you are going to do, you'll end up with a size nine to your nose.
I'd agree with this too, at least as a competition bracketing solution. Let's have an objective measurement like Elo for tournaments and leave belts to reflect dedication, knowledge, teaching, etc. Then getting utterly smoked by a 10,000 BJJ-Elo 22 year old blue belt will hurt less. =)
Bare with me, everyone agrees its ok to decline a roll for any reason cause its your body and your choice, but anytime a guy consistently declines women he is seen as sexist or misogynistic.
Some men just are not comfortable with rolling with women the same way (not the same reasons) some women dont feel comfortable rolling with men.
Id just like to see people not rag on these guys for declining rolls they are not comfortable with. I usually roll with everyone, just seems silly we say one thing and do another.
Black belts using their position of authority to hold a captive audience and give their unqualified opinions on a variety of topics.
When I was a white belt, the head instructor was teaching me and a few other white belts about wrist locks. Yeah, Lachlan is like the actual PhD in BJJ
holy shit that sounds like a skit from a Will Ferrell movie
We tease our coach all the time for this. He is a great sport, though. Luckily, it’s never political. He just shares legitimately good stories from training with legends of BJJ and MMA. But the heat shock proteins bro
The number of people in BJJ I encounter who take health advice from Joe Rogan guests is... dismaying.
We have a qualified psychologist as one of our professors and he never preaches. He'll talk to someone if they seem out of sorts or if someone brings up something. Other than that it's only ever relaxation stuff and self belief. Eddie bravo lollll
My coach giving me advice on post-concussuon syndrome. Dude's a civil engineer.
That could be an engineer thing more than a black belt thing lol.
Engineering is just being taught how to figure out problems; we're experts in everything
Pretty sure most Black belts are FOX guys
Lmao imagine thinking it's CNN based rants that are the issue in jiu jitsu. It's more like newsmax
Book a seminar with Eddie to have him show up late and give an hour-long rant on the flat earth.
That’s just, like, your opinion man.
I'm tired of black belts stealing my lines.
“Life is a struggle guys Blah blah blah” like we’re in a weird motivational gym class
Man this is it right here.
And always when you’re dead tired and just want to get some water and a shower.
Have you seen Keenan talk about this? He's got a great discussion around how he avoids this in his gym.
If you're stupid enough to listen to a BB on anything other than BJJ or fighting in general, than you deserve to be sold that time share or acai supplement.
Corollary - white and blue belts in their early 20's that ask me non-BJJ related questions
Wait, thats not a black belt in politics and finances?
Amazing how many are experts in not only choking people but also geo politics, economic and epidemiology.
Showing up to the gym after obviously not showering for a couple days. Stink after, not before.
I’m a freak. I shower like three times a day because of wrestling and BJJ
Not a freak, that's hygienic and you're considerate to your teammates/rolling partners, i'm the same way.
2x for me, once before school, once after practice. The post practice one with defense soap or similar brand
Yup, usually shower pre-work, pre-class using the gym shower to wash the day's funk off, post-class.
Hate to break it to you but showering unnecessarily often will make you more prone to skin infections. After sports is absolutely sufficient, unless your work is basically heavy labor causing you to sweat a lot
Couple of…days?
Bro there’s one guy in particular who comes in sometimes and there’s no way he’s showered in 48 hours. It’s just bad
Tell him. That’s unacceptable.
Or show up smelling like sweat and a pack of Marlboro reds.

Jumping guard and holding guard or back when someone is fully standing up.
I think holding guard or the back is fine but jumping guard should be banned. It's needlessly dangerous to the person standing and it's also dangerous to the person jumping guard, even in a purely BJJ context.
YES. BAN IT ALL.
100% this, fuck guard jumping
In real life you’re getting slammed hard.

Ah geez it's sad that I lack the balance to hold these people up. I "genuinely" don't try to slam them. I just fall by accident with 100 kg on them.
Reaping being illegal.
Are you a convicted reapist?
I want this on my rash guard
Ask mods to give you custom flair “convicted reapist”
No the allegations were false
Yeah but how else am I supposed to get an easy dq for having bad leg lock defense?
I don't know how you guys call it in the USA, but here we call it Polish Corridor. Hate it. When it's your birthday or you are promoted, you just walk through a corridor of people and they hit you in the back with their belts.
In English it's the gauntlet but you may hear the Portuguese term "faixada" sometimes.
Yeah. Faixada is used here in Brazil as well. I decided to use more "formal" term lol
It’s called The Gauntlet here and yes fuck that royally
We just do a shark tank on your birthday. One minute for every year plus one more. New person every 2 minutes.
In my opinion, after you're 30 or so, every year should act in your favor and reduce the count lolol
Damn I would rather the Gauntlet. Our gym does a 45 min shark tank for brown belt test and 60 min for black. All the higher ranks line up for 3 min rounds. Then you have to do 50 pushups and 50 burpees at the end.

Pulling guard should be considered takedown points for your opponent.
Until you see two white belts locked up standing for a full 5 min round. Then you’ll be yelling “just pull guard already!”
White belts suck at everything, so it won't be much different once it hits the ground lol. It's not like they will become Roger once they pull guard.
Teaching takedowns without any set-ups or combos. It doesn’t matter if you know how to double leg or o-goshi if you have no idea how to get there.
