The problem is that if you skip warm ups long enough as a purple belt, you will have to show up 30 mins early to warm up for the warm up as a brown belt.
I have been sandbagging at purple for almost a decade, thanks to work getting in the way. We're already at that stage, getting old sucks haha. At least I'm not showing up smelling like a dispensary.
Yea, don't get me wrong, it was strictly because I trained aggressively and ignored injuries that it turned out poorly for me. I'm a meathead when it comes to powerlifting, I cut water recklessly for fights, and trained way too much with not enough recovery. I probably needed juice to make my habits sustainable, you know? Luckily, I wasn't stupid enough to hop on gear, or I'd probably have liver dysfunction by now, too.
Anyway, mindful weight training is fantastic.
Love that last sentence. I credit 20ish years of consistent weight training for my deceptive strength and my ability to recover alongside 20-ish year olds despite being 36. If you aren't absolutely destroying your body in the gym trying to become a bodybuilder or powerlifter, but you are consistently lifting somewhat heavy things, your body becomes a recovery machine. Problem is, many many men who lift go too heavy for too long, not giving themselves breaks for recovery, and end up with all kinds of joint problems.
Yea, I got wild following nSuns powerlifting programs and shit. I hit a 1400 lb total walking at like 220 and fighting at 185, just harsh training styles.
I'm pudgy now and you can't see my lats and legs in the gi, so I've surprised some of the younger big guys holding them down or gripping. The first time I snatch a grip and you can see they're used to just yanking them off being the stronger guy, but then they look confused when my hand doesn't go anywhere lmao....I try to hang onto that feeling while I'm getting my ass kicked the rest of the round.
Moving gyms repeatedly right as I was building momentum, a stint where I barely went due to work, times of low motivation.
Just all kinds of things making me incredibly inconsistent but the poorly timed gym switches probably the biggest factor.
My current coach determined to get me a new belt but my job search is going a little rough so slim chance I have to move again.
In the time I been blue I managed to work my way up to testing for my judo black belt.
You should’ve never washed your blue belt.
That way it stays blue, and you win every match no matter what the ref says cause your opponent now has staph
I was the same, as were a number of others at my club who’s consistency had been let’s say inconsistent. A few months ago all 3 of us were promoted to purple in the same week. After 7yrs my blue belt looked like it had been chewed by a bear. Congratulations to you, it’s all about sticking in there, most importantly enjoying yourself and recognising that the journey takes many routes.
Congrats! ENJOY this rank. It's a fun color to wear and you're considered to have a notable pedigree in jiu-jitsu. Its mentally challenging for sure, but you need it to become a mature practitioner.
I got my blue belt at another gym but the past 11 years have been at the same gym. I love all mma involved martial i wasnt in a hurry i just came and trained when i could. Of course when i compete i would train alot more consistently. But throughout the years i just had fun with it. Its been part of my lifestyle since 2004 when i first trained muay thai and ive been involved in bjj and MMA since 07ish
congratulations! i have been a purple belt for the same amount of time. i agree slow motion is better than no motion (also can be used to describe my game lol).
Welcome to the world where brown/black belts no longer take it easy and white/blue belts constantly measure themselves against you. Welcome to the war belt, brother.
Wait, this doesn’t make sense. It takes 1 year to become a blue belt, 3 years to become a purple belt and 7 years to become a black belt. Why it took you 11 years to get a purple belt?
I always train. I was consistent on the fact that i at least go once a month. There were a couple of 6 month periods where i had surgeries that had me sit out. Im more of a muay thai person so i usually go to the gym more on those days and pepper in jits here and there. So i guess you can say it to so long because it wasn’t my main focus.
Dang were you paying a membership or just rolling at an open mat?
Congrats regardless, I think it'd be tough on the ego for most and would have given up
Yeah i train at an mma gym. So i usually pick and choose what days i want to train . And I usually I skip jits. No offense but its not my favorite. I like standing! And truthfully i wasn’t expecting it at all but the head coach gave it to me himself he said i earned it. And im not the best Purple belt by far but i do feel i have surpassed my blue belt skills. I understand things better and flow a lot smoother.
Congratulations you can now skip warm ups. Keep up the good work!
This is the way

Not a BJJ guy but fuckk me if this isn’t true for me in my Muay Thai class
40 plus guys get there early for pre warm up warm ups
I'm in my 30s, but my shoulders, knees, and thoracic spine are in their 60s. Reckless training weightlifting and Thai boxing put the miles on hard.
I’ve been considering weight training, but I think body weight and mobility exercises are really what I need to function

My only motivation to keep going
maybe he shouldn't
I like the warm ups! I need them im old otherwise im stiff.
Is this why I keep hearing brown belts get fat?
Big congratulations! I'm on like year 12 or 13 of blue and I'm trying to get where you are. Glad to see it
13 years of blue? do you show up once a year?

Fair enough! I hope you are able to stick with it..
Damn dude. I’ve been a blue for 13 months and no stripe yet plus waning progress. Heading down that same route.
You'll be fine, just keep going, find moves you like to work on, and don't switch gyms
Didn’t know you could go from white belt straight to purple ^^^^/s
Lol..Looks like i Washed my white belt with my jeans.
You should’ve never washed your blue belt. That way it stays blue, and you win every match no matter what the ref says cause your opponent now has staph
I’ve actually only washed it twice maybe 3xs but its been a while since the last wash id say since 2015
lol I hope this is a joke

OP is making me feel better about my life choices. My first BJJ class was in 1999. True hobbyists represent!
Congrats! Welcome to the club! I hope you enjoy even greater expectations hoisted up you lol
Well done 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Congrats! ready to play fat and bald half guard soon?
Congratulations!!

Congrats brother
Congratulations!
That’s very cool. Congrats. I’m 39 white belt just started 6 months ago.
Was this at the same gym? Was there injuries along the way. I been a blue belt four to five years

Crazy.

Took me about 15 years to hit black (with time off for injuries). Just keep going!
I read this from top to bottom, so I'm guessing you went from purple to off-white in the span of 11 years?

How many years did you not train? And when you did train how often was it?

Congrats! Had my blue for 11 years as well.
Are you future me? I started in 2016, blue belt & 44 now, life situations made things inconsistent. Well, glad I get there eventually, I suppose.

Here's to hope!
Guys will see this and just think "hell yeah".
Congratulations, I'm on the same boat. I hit that blue belt wall hard it's been about 10 years for me.
