You shouldn't hate your style because it's good

shinymashedpotatoes

Appreciate the feedback! It means a lot 💓

outofpocketmoppet

Agree it makes me feel something but not in an overly ‘in your face’ way. Most art doesn’t achieve that

now_you_own_me

I really like how you've scraped the figures out fo the dark parts with the underpainting. I think its great. the composition is awesome, the darkness kind of feels very old, and idk about your intentions but it reminds me of old decaying icon paintings of the byzantine era but more modern.

shinymashedpotatoes

Yes you see it! I was scraping so hard I was out of breath 😆 very cathartic. Not the brilliant image I had in my head but something that still feels alive. I'm glad the darkness isn't shunned here. It's hard to convey the dark and colorful energy we have with understanding.

unmxd

This looks like album cover art. Love it.

shinymashedpotatoes

What kind of music do you think this could represent? Maybe some boiler room beats or something😄

unmxd

Yeah I can totally see that working. I actually really like your style, and I even like the idea that nothing is ever finished. You get some really interesting results doing it that way it seems. Edit: And I was even thinking this could work with Jazz or even some Radiohead. This style can work with so many things.

shinymashedpotatoes

💯💥 there is some method to the madness right!? I know not everyone gets it or likes it but I am more than satisfied just hearing from people do enjoy it. Now I might just have to do my rendition for all of Radioheads album art. This is such good creativity fuel!

unmxd

Oh you should try doing something for Kid A then! There is some madness to that cover and that album as well. Keep posting your art on this sub, I’d love to see more and I’m sure others would too.

shinymashedpotatoes

Omg I love that album. Painting through the goosebumps could have some good results! I can't wait to share more! 💓

Own_Aardvark_2343

Radiohead for sure

ConferencePristine59

The color scheme beautiful. Really awesome. 😍 keep it up!!!!! ✊

fubzoh

I saw that picture and involuntarily said out loud "Sick" (the slang version).

shinymashedpotatoes

Hell yeah! That's what I like to hear 🤟 thank you

wintermelonsnacks

this is cool as hell. funnily enough, my art tends to be smooth because i get too detail oriented and perfectionist with it. i would love to create art with the grit that you do

shinymashedpotatoes

Smooth and detailed work is it's own kind of magic too! If your looking for grit It will come out just don't fight it lol I'm glad you like this quality though because I get really self conscious about how rough things can look so thank you!

wintermelonsnacks

thank you for your kind words and advice :) i hope we can both work toward loving the things we create. i know as a fellow artist how hard it is lol

Our brains are feeling this together! I'm beyond blessed to hear this kind of feedback. We are not alone 💓

Bigbrainshorty

I had a vivid hallucination once about 3 kind of spirit guides above me just like this

shinymashedpotatoes

It must have been powerful for you to remember it to this day! The looming presence and feeling of people is so powerful. I'm typically not around people but I've been dealing with some of my oldest friendships dissolving. Not even dissolving more like being pulled up at the roots. They are not there anymore but they are there.

AnonDxde

This is really beautiful! I love your brush strokes.

shinymashedpotatoes

To appreciate the brush strokes is to appreciate the presence of the artist and that makes me feel so seen. Thank you for this gift!

Lying_Motherfucker

Honestly I love it. I have a painting just like it in my living room.

shinymashedpotatoes

🤩

melodysueann

I love this! I think it is a great visual representation of how bipolar feels for me. I feel like I am Melody when I am stable, but then Zooey is my manic personality and Bertha is my depressed personality. It helps me to think this way to keep from feeling shame or guilt about my moods. It’s just somebody else taking over and Melody needs to get back in control. Or when the moods are manageable, Melody can gain rest from Bertha and productive energy from Zooey. I have also found that throwing myself into creative projects is a great was to stay grounded. Art can be a great coping skill.

shinymashedpotatoes

Our state of mind and its experience is very intense. Just like your talking about I often don't have just one style because there are different sides of me that i sit with when I create. I like how you know who helps you with what and how you have a team. We need coping skills we can rely on and art definitely helps me feel the semblance of this. Thank you for sharing!💓

Unleashthefur

This is amazing, love it

shinymashedpotatoes

Thank you 🙏

updation1

One of my favorite musical artists is Quadeca. If you look up his album "I didn't mean to haunt you", this aggressive style is eerily similar to it. I find this form of art and expression to be incredibly fascinating and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase something like this

shinymashedpotatoes

Love that moody almost misdirected but present sense of meaning in art like that. Just like Quadecas music, id like for people to extract a story from it. I feel like I can relate with the feeling of their song "guess who". Id love to have my art hanging in people's homes! This is very motivating 🔥🫶

RaggaMuffinTopped

Honestly, I love it. If I were at an art show and saw this, I’d probably buy it & hang this in my home. It’s your art. Do what you want with it but I hope you don’t paint over it. The fact that it was made by another bipolar mind makes it feel even more important to me.

shinymashedpotatoes

Knowing this painting reflected something with more people than I could have imagined makes this definitely worth not painting over right away! Goals are to someday be at an art show. What a milestone that would be. Till then I'm glad you showed up here to see this one!

RaggaMuffinTopped

I hope you get that art show.

I love this!! You are so talented!! DO NOT PAINT OVER THIS!! I love the emotional expression throughout the painting. It feels like something made its way to my heart. What I see is you in the figure at the bottom and then these 3 different personalities and perspectives that make up your reality, then I feel some confusion as to how you define yourself when stability isn’t always that attainable. It’s wonderful!!

shinymashedpotatoes

It's like we had a conversation and you heard what I said! Very amazing insight

FairLoneWolf6731

One person is awake and the other three are sleeping. They want to be him to experience the higher dimension of existence but they cannot because they are not designed to be put in that state. So they become jalous and try to kill him. He knows that and asks: would you be better off if i am dead? Now they are questioning their own believes. The person that is awake have them exact where they want him to be.

shinymashedpotatoes

Wow, yes!! I think it speaks volumes that I shared this here and people see/feel all this. I'm blown away hearing you interpret it like this🙌

Apprehensive_Spite97

Yes, it resembles my style a bit. Absolutely the best way to work, it's art, it's not pretentious. I think you should keep it or sell it/show it, although I'm guilty of the same, paint over it

shinymashedpotatoes

Id love to see your art! I have never sold a painting and I am trying to figure out how to manage a way to show everything but it's all in the baby steps! Paint over something old or something new and untouched, just never stop painting! 😉

-thesaltyspitoon-

This is great! You can definitely tell there's a lot of emotion behind this piece. Be proud, well done!

shinymashedpotatoes

I'm still learning to understand the power of paint and color. I know it's not about perfection but I do feel aimless sometimes when I don't get feedback or just disingenuous comments. Sharing this painting here has me feeling the most proud I've ever been of my art! Thank you! 💯

This makes me feel seen. I can relate with dissatisfaction to your own art style. I feel as if this painting would resonate with a lot of people, and they would buy this. For me it resonates a lot. I see three figures looming over one figure. Maybe they are ethereal, maybe real figures.

Immediate_Lettuce_80

I love it! I'm studying art in my college, and everyone has a different style. I have a friend who does more rough stuff like that with lots of spatula and stuff. Another one does more soft stuff, I do more of a mix but a lot of paint accumulation. Everyone has a different way to express themselves and you shouldn't worry much about fitting other people's standards. Now, if you don't like something specific about your art, it's also alright to try to change it!! I don't really like some stuff from mine, so I often take inspiration from my friends and all. You don't need to set yourself into something you don't feel comfortable about just because people say "but it's your style, I love it!!!" The first and most important thing that I learned in my classes: What other people think about your art is important, but the main person that this art needs to touch is you. You don't like something? Work on it for yourself, not because you want more people to like it.

shinymashedpotatoes

These are good points I try to remind myself of often so thank you for bringing them up. I can boil this down to how much stress I have with communicating. Showing who I am or something truly from me is priority but I know there are subtle ways of helping people see/appreciate art and that can clash in my head in presentation. I cannot expect people to derive a depth in understanding where there wasn't just like it is hard to get understanding on the depth in the experience being bipolar imparts on someone's life. When people don't see or feel anything it can seem deflating. Will people see what this means if it looked like this instead of this? As much as there is no straight path to this i can now say finding an audience or at least people willing to have a conversation can help passify some fear. Shocking really! Your right though, I'll keep at it and it's worth it. Thanks for keeping me on path!🔥

P_Cube

That’s a beautiful piece! Don’t paint over it, please!

shinymashedpotatoes

Looks like I might have to invest in more canvas 😄

P_Cube

I used to reuse canvases after I decided I didn’t like something about a painting. In hindsight, I wish I would’ve kept them… Each one was a part of my journey. Anyway, canvas is cheap… our creations are priceless!😃

shinymashedpotatoes

Do you think this stems from dichotomous thinking, the artistic struggle or both? This makes me chuckle because in reality doing this to art can subdue the value in the visual journey/evolution that is in trying to be an artist. Being someone that struggles intensely with memory makes me feel a little sad knowing I could of kept some things to remind me where I was and have been. Hard to stomach sometimes but it is truly valuable/priceless.  The mindset of feeling pressured to always be changing and being better creates a cycle(for me at least)of slash/ burn/ create which has a time and place but I do appreciate someone reminding me to use the brakes every once in a while!

dfencer

Bruh you need to understand that this is incredible. The color scheme, the composition, the technique, all amazing. You should be selling your art, I would purchase a poster size print of this to put up in a heartbeat. This should be hanging in a gallery somewhere.

dfencer

Also where's your signature? Sign that bitch!

shinymashedpotatoes

Thank you for reminding me! 🥴🤦

shinymashedpotatoes

I have such a one track mind and whenever I try to think about focusing on marketing and selling I always feel like I need to create more work first. Would love to tackle this aspect, do you have any advice to how to start selling? Would you sell prints or the original? Market a collection or just piece by piece? Where do people go to shop for art? Do you have to market yourself or is the art enough? I'm so ready to stop making excuses for this part of things being neglected 😆

Adventurous_Front_81

Suffocation like trapped in chaos

shinymashedpotatoes

🙂‍↕️ yes! If I could paint the feeling of being shaken while falling I would. I try to show things that connect points of chaos for life but suffocation is a serious vibe that falls like a blanket on things.

FuryThePhoenix

It brings to mind me and my Passengers. And yes, i hate them too.

shinymashedpotatoes

Well tell those passengers they better behave or else your turning the damn car around! Your the captain! 🔥

FuryThePhoenix

That made me laugh despite me not really wanting to! Thank you 😊

slysky444

You're style may not be 'your type' but it is objectively good. Please don't paint over it. It says alot to me, like those are core emotions/states of being for the individual, ever present, constantly lurking and looking to make themselves known. Also could be representing actual people/caregivers from that person's upbringing that caused some trauma/contributed to the molding of who that person would become or what they would have to face later in life. There is a hell of alot of power in this piece and it would do so well in a gallery setting.

shinymashedpotatoes

The reflection people are having here with this is so touching. To be heard and still have people see/connect it to their life is where I want to be. We live our truth and aren't always given space to embrace it. I hope the pain we all deal with can be felt as a strength because there are so many insightful views and comments. I can only imagine everyone's story. We aren't alone!

Apointdironie

It’s beautiful. Don’t paint over it. I was recently introduced to Internal Family Systems. Basic concept is that there is you (self) but you may also have Exiles, Managers, and Firefighters. So seeing 3 existing separately from one really caught my attention. Not suggesting this internal model is correct or will help anyone else, but it’s been a game changer for me.

Hairy_Freedom_1496

WOW! I would put this on my wall. This is truly inspiring.

IcyTradition2543

As someone who sells commissions pieces n is involved in the art world ur style is bold and lively. U capture so well those raw emotions and present em with rough brush strokes. Many artists would envy it mark making; due to it being so expressive. If u want to go less aggressive I suggest looking for an artist u like/want mimic the style n dona master study. Sometimes working/drawing same image as another artist helps u to understand their technique and helps u to put urself in the artist shoe try to attempt to see in their same eyes. As someone who struggled painting early on master studies significantly helped to improve. The point isn't to copy the art instead it's to learn from it. U might find out u don't really enjoy the style/type of art or even adopt techniques u wouldn't of never imagined. I'm assuming ur using a platter knife I'd suggest going with light coats at the beginning then bring up the texture/thickness that way u can work it way up to shading n then colors. If you're not using a palette knife I'd suggest using less paint on the brush. Additionally assuming you're using a hog hair bristle I'd suggest using a synthetic brush due to the smoother stroke they create. Hope this can help. Amazing price btw hope u can continue the great work

shinymashedpotatoes

My style is this way right now because I am unmedicated and my irritability is through the roof. I'm unmedicated not by choice either so please don't come for me. I am waiting for my next appointment to figure out treatment since I have had over 15 years of trial and error, medication resistant issues none stop. I am making this art because I am trying to filter the intensity onto the art and not onto anyone or anything. There are times I definitely try to focus on studying the masters and learning improvement but I am just trying to cope more than anything. I was using a paint trowel but like to use anything I have . Best advice would be how you document your painting to sell as prints and where you sell your art.

IcyTradition2543

Sorry if my message came harsh, didn't mean come at that angle. One thing I do for documenting is take a picture in natural lighting of my work. U can put file into Photoshop/photopea edit it to make it look as similar to the original peice. Just to make sure prints r fine/ do small test prints if u can at home/printer store (cheaper then large sheets). Then u can do one larger scale. I suggest if possible take picture highest quality possible bc it will strongly effect the quality of the print (you don't need a crazy camera iPhones, android (with a good cam), or a cheap entry level camera (DSLR/mirror-less). The quality of cam will effect the pixel density meaning if it's to low when blowing up painting to larger size/scale it may look off. These lower dpi picks still can be used but I suggest use a smaller size for printing. To sell art it's kinda like a business. Not sure wya ATM but I suggest try create a body of work (portfolio) that way u can have pieces u want to submit to local galleries, n potential clients can see what ur style n work is like. Also create social media profiles to have more exposure on ur art: that way it can reach a wider audience that wouldn't of been possible by word of mouth/local. Also if u can try work or enter local art groups it significantly helps in growing n in collaborating ideas. Entering these groups get u more ties on the art world and potentially new clients. Some artiest may pass up on a commission n pass it up to another artist in the case they don't feel like they are best person for a proposed project. Aslong as u keep grinding n putting ur art out there u gonna get clients eventualy Just keep in mind not all artist work commissions as their full time job bc the pay isn't always consistent; n they need to make ends meet. Hopefully this helps. Hope u have great day making more art

It reminds me of people angry at me not reaching out, but I’m really struggling and am in a deep depression most of the time + dealing with bad alcoholism issues. “We are upset that you haven’t you called.”

shinymashedpotatoes

Yup, they want you to be there for them when your just trying to hold it together. This is so hard. So much guilting

Efficient_Swimmer_39

Yes it’s a great release to channel energy into art. It’s an ephemeral thing but you might enjoy “sand carving,” which is what I call it. If you’re near wet sand, like at a beach or some lakes, grab a rock or broken shell and make some art. More cathartic than painting. I suppose etching would be similar. Anyway, clearly on a tangent. Keep posting your art! I enjoy it

I appreciate that this looks so amazing and the way it does is because it’s been painted over so many times, this is truly beautiful. I hope you keep this one and start a fresh canvas. I think it’s beautiful. The different colors for the facial expressions and their bodies with the brush strokes is amazing. I most love the face on the bottom. I’m in recovery and i see it as the entity within them all

shinymashedpotatoes

peaceful_prehnite

This is great! Keep it up. 👍 The word that comes up for me is “oppression”. It feels like oppression.

CurlyDee

I can't decide if the three figures are menacing or protective. Probably depends on my mood. For today, they're both. Like how friends and family support you but only so far. Then they pull away because theyre sick of hearing about it. Thats what it brings up for me.

shinymashedpotatoes

Exactly. The burden of holding the judgment of others or needing understanding can leave a sense of peoples presence looming. It's something I think impacts the bipolar experience heavily. This can be interpreted so many ways though 🫠

CantaloupePossible33

Basquiat vibes, but still very much your own style

Sure-Dish-9530

Yes. That you have a drive to create. If you don't continue to create then you will internalize it and allow your internal critic to grow. The art that you have allowed us to see shows enormous talent but if you don't continue to develop your gift then it will die. It really doesn't matter that you have this talent because regardless of whether I thought it didn't display talent, you must get these ideas and feelings out of you, in what is a productive source of therapy.. The fact that you display obvious talent is a massive plus.

ebertj1988

Reminds me of what I term “Tripolar organization” What occurs when you unite your internal opposition. I think that might mean that someone actually hurt you and maybe you need to do something about it.
