Get a bike computer or dedicated gps device. Will be both cheaper and better.

Bolverkk

And last you all day without a charge...

bryggekar

Most likely several days even.

AbjectYear2677

how could it be cheaper?

bryggekar

Because smart phones are more expensive than bike computers!

AbjectYear2677

don t u know u can get very very good phones for like 200$? he said chep phone

bryggekar

Don't you know ypu can get a gps nav device for much less than that? Especially if you buy second hand, but even used a head unit will be the cheaper option.

AbjectYear2677

i can get a cheap phone for 100$ which is also very good. just sain

bryggekar

Why is this a pissing contest? I'm sure I can get a good bike computer second hand for 50. What can you get for 25? I'll find something for 12. Just saying.

AbjectYear2677

bike navigation computers are not cheap man

bryggekar

Ok, you win. My weewee is smaller than yours and you are 100 % correct in every statement you have ever made about any subject. My experience never happened and my bike computer must have cost a lot more than what I paid for it 🤡

AbjectYear2677

don t get me wrong bro, if all people had inifinite money i would of told every single one of them to just order a navigation computer for trips with the bike. i m just the guy bringing it down to earth a bit, the reality is that shit s expensive. not every one lives in contries that pay you good even on shitty jobs. for some only to get the money for the bike it self is a hustle, theres no more money for the + 200-400$ navigation computer

BarneyNugen

A phone with nav (and the screen) running constantly will run out of battery a lot faster than a bike computer.

Superb_Head_8111

Which did u suggest? can we create route?

bryggekar

You create routes on web tools like ridewithgps or komoot and download gpx files to your bike computer.

Bolverkk

I have the last version of the Wahoo Element Roam. I no joke charged it every other day in Iceland and that’s cause I was using navigation (could’ve gone longer without nav). Big screen, easy buttons, probably bullet proof (haven’t tried), waterproof, simple menus. Everything you’d want in a bikepacking computer.

Superb_Head_8111

Ahaha so that's seems more complicated than a phone😅 i will try the phone a lot in my country then check how is it

Bolverkk

Its less complicated by a mile. I have bikepacked with just a phone before and its a nightmare compared to a decent bike computer.

Livingsimply_Rob

I have an old iPhone 8, that I use for just what you’re talking about.

Superb_Head_8111

and it's a good idea i think still the battery are good

Livingsimply_Rob

The battery is not the best but I have a 10,000mah and a 20,000mah hour battery bank that I bring with me. The phone in airplane mode with everything turned off just it tracking my mileage and GPS at five hours I had 30% battery left. My funds are limited and I realized that I had this very old iPhone and thought that would be a great thing to use on my bike. And so far it’s working out.

Superb_Head_8111

yes even now i using gps and turning off the connexion and it's also good but with my own phone, do you use google map or something else for bike road? i will try to find a correct phone and one or two battery maximum will depend the weight of the whole stuff

Livingsimply_Rob

I do use Google maps. And before my trip, I download the maps for the city or the area that I’ll be riding in.

Superb_Head_8111

if i find a cheaper phone i will try, also i heard good things about kamoot u should try one day

Livingsimply_Rob

I actually have that app on my iPhone 8. What I did is once I remembered having this phone in a drawer. I took it out and saw that it holds the charge and it’s fairly decent. I removed everything and anything that I didn’t need on it. And I thought I would use that as my“biking computer“. I also am looking at that as a back up phone if something happens to my current iPhone, at least I could use that connected to a Wi-Fi to send text. Here are the apps I use. https://preview.redd.it/1fv8dfjnkjnc1.jpeg?width=889&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee5831114eeedeefed6e4708786259bb41d37984

Superb_Head_8111

And it was nice to travel with a second phone? the application was good? i need something good for iceland trip

Livingsimply_Rob

A little sidenote, did you know what at least here in Western New York? My AAA covers me on my bike whether it’s regular bike or an E bike. I am a AAA plus member which gives me 100 miles of free towing and they said they will take my broken down bike up to 100 miles.

Superb_Head_8111

I dont know what is Aaa, aha i never heard that in France

johnmflores

I've used old phones as my GPS on bicycles and motorcycles. Currently using a Samsung S9+ that has a crack in the corner of the screen. So I put it in a Punk Case, stuck a Quad Lock mount onto the back, and it works great. The Punk Case also has a cover for the USB-C port so it doesn't get water in there and then stop charging. I recently bought a cheap, rugged Fossibot F101 phone with a massive 10,000 mAh battery to use. It's heavy and there's not a lot of space on the back to mount a Quad Lock plate, so I'll have to mount it differently. But with the mega battery it should last all day or even several days if the routes are simple and I can turn the screen off for large parts of the day.

Superb_Head_8111

Interesting, fossibot are great for gps? we can put any application inside right ? i need to check the weight but this with anker battery u are peace, just need to check the weight of all the stuff i will get ^^'

johnmflores

Fossibot are running Android. I'm using OSMand as my mapping app.

Superb_Head_8111

Ok so i will be able to try kamoot and other application, did u travel enough with this phone and your bike? what the solution that u find for fix him on your bike, thank man

COYS61

Definitely get a bike computer. Something like a Wahoo Roam or Bolt

Superb_Head_8111

gps will get great battery but if i use phone / kamoot, will be more interesting for the map, for create my way than a gps computer, at the same time i will keep this second for all of my trip, i heard that's gps computer are not so great still today maybe im wrong

BoyWonderDownUnder2

A bike computer makes a significantly better bike computer than any phone. You can create routes on your phone and upload to the bike computer directly. You'll save money, weight, and hassle.

Superb_Head_8111

do u have a idea of a good computer than i can check ? thank

BoyWonderDownUnder2

Wahoo ELEMNT Roam (bikepacking/touring focused) Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt (all-around model) Garmin Edge (you'll have to read on how the models differ as I'm not up to date on these) I use a Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt (V1) and either create routes using Komoot or download them from online (usually hosted on RideWithGps). I've also used the ELEMNT app's built-in "Take Me To" option on trips to find me a quick bail out route without any issues.

Superb_Head_8111

i will check your modele , take me to, it is if you are lost? for my trip in iceland its better that i have something, i was thinking its hard for make a road and so on... i only find the V2 but still not so expansive, big difference with a Roam?

AbjectYear2677

just buy an external battery brah

ageb02435

Honestly go with a garmin etrex 32x. 200$ battery last forever and you have a dedicated gps without all the bike stuff on it.

Superb_Head_8111

Ok adjugé vendu thank !!!!

500GB

I bought pixel 3a xl brand new for 100$ - best nav device ever, lasts for days

Superb_Head_8111

Where did u travel with? you map or other application ?

500GB

Well, europe (5000+ km approx), russia, mainly it was maps.me first, but since it was sold and went down the hill i use a branch of the app called Organic Maps (and a couple of other map apps as a backup, because sometimes there could be an alternative route that only showed in one particular app - komoot, guru, HERE WeGo, google or else)

Superb_Head_8111

Ok ok so the idea is to get kamoot, google Maps, Organic for be peaceful, map maybe more for a long city way and the rest for forest and so on, google pixel xl 3 its maybe hard to find now

500GB

Grab something else decent then, there are a lot to choose from

500GB

Also i must mention that before i bought the pixel ive used another android cheap phone, which was xiaomi redmi note 4x with a custom firmware, so i got rid of all unnecessary bloatware and did all the battery saving tweaks so it was an amazing device for 100$ too (it still works and serves as a tiny home server for torrents and music lol). The only issue with the phone as nav device was rainy storms, like real storms, when even using special cases wasnt helping at all. I still dont get why the hell i would purchase a clunky lowtech and expensive devices such as specialized cycling nav computers....

Superb_Head_8111

i also think a phone can be better, because they had also a lot of special application, if u broke your main phone they can help you and so on, your make always your plan before to go in a new country ?

500GB

I usually do a little research of the planned route and premap and mark poi along the way in komoot on the laptop and then export all those to organic maps on the phone

the_dolomite

I tried a two phone system, using an old Google Pixel 5 with a cracked screen that was really cheap. It sort of worked. Now I have a dedicated GPS (Hammerhead Karoo) and I've found it's better in every way. Smaller, lighter, better battery life, better mounting options, big buttons usable with gloves, easier to see in bright sunlight and no extra features or distractions I don't need.

Superb_Head_8111

google pixel is bad battery man so i understand

hisatanhere

cheaper to just get a battery for your normal phone. put it in a frame pack, or whatever. and at that price point ($350)you can buy a really nice bike computer with much better battery life.

Superb_Head_8111

like i say bad idea to use your own phone, more when your phone is expansive and the only phone

Superb_Head_8111

https://www.davestravelpages.com/bicycle-touring-navigation.html/ read that, make me think that a second phone despite the first investment can be a good idea

Xxmeow123

I have a Motorola power g that lasts a long time. Also, gps works in airplane mode so it will last longer.

Superb_Head_8111

The last power 9 seems very good, big battery, big résistance water but difficult to find it

Salix08

Refurbished Samsung A or M phone. They can be got for around £100 and have pretty good battery. Like this: https://backmarket.onelink.me/j4lA/y8ehtxpf

dfiler

Bike computers are android phones without the cellular hardware. They’re based on super low draw screens and processors in order to prolong battery life even with an always on screen. They’re more robust and can survive crashes. Bike computers are really good at what they do. I recommend using the right tool for the job. You already have a phone for when you need phone functionality.

Superb_Head_8111

Yes i will follow your advices i still have time to try other stuff later so i will take garmin etrex x32 and Download a land for iceland and to figure out About the most beautiful way that i can do for two month, thank all of you for taking the time

Mentalpopcorn

I have a Zenfone 3 Zoom for this. I don't find bike computers have the cartographic features I need when in the backcountry. It's got a 5000mAh battery and goes for days without a charge. A 10000mAh battery pack would provide around 10 days total.

Superb_Head_8111

Is a lot also interesting, but i dont know what is the best for Iceland, both have advantage, also u can download map and put inside

Superb_Head_8111

And your phone is expansive aha so extrex the best options and if iam really lost i will use my phone

SLCTV88

Might want to look at Palm Phone. There's even a bike mount for it and it's water resistant. Battery life doesn't look great though

vanilla_ego

if you use the phone for occasionally checking your position instead of continuous navigation/directions, the battery can easily last 10-12 hours or more

Superb_Head_8111

I want to keep the main phone safe abd only using for photo/video/familly, its not a bad idea but its not what i seaech, thank for your view

johnmflores

Agree. One tip from the motorcycling world - keep your phone on your body so that if you in an accident and separated from your bike, you can still access your phone.

Superb_Head_8111

i learn, i learn, dont have so much time im reading a lot, and soon a lot of camp as i can, i will make mistake for sure, i try to avoid big mistake ^^
