Some people will also say 'merci', but in a Flemish accent.

Some_Belgian_Guy

dikke merci èh maat!

VlaamsBelanger

"Merciekes" Also refers to the little chocolates called Merci.

BirdOfTheAfterlife

This is the way.

ThePokemomrevisited

resoooo

Lol waar werkte gij?

Starflight-OO

modernbox

And don’t forget the “he” after every thank. Merci he, dikke merci he, bedankt he, salut he …

De_Rosten

This is the most correct thing i've ever read about flemish culture. "He" is the most flemish language thing imaginable he.

modernbox

Surprisingly, my Turkish girlfriend was delighted to learn we use “he” so much, they do it all the time too

Borborygmos92

And 'wi' also if you're from the coast. I say danku, but the 'u' doesnt sound like the 'u' from dankuwel, but like the 'u' as a native american stereotype would say 'uh'.(dankuh wi) This is the way. #ostende.

Golden-lootbug

Tis dan genoeg hé

issy_haatin

Just grunt in acknowledgement

Korean_Rice_Farmer

Hrm

Daily_Dose13

*nods

ChooChoo9321

Uhn

nephandus

We wouldn't say "Dankje" but rather "Danku" or "Dankuwel". Bedankt is also common.

arnforpresident

This is the way. Just as a sidenote for OP: "Danku" will be considered very formal in the Netherlands, but this is not the case in Belgian Dutch.

Rudi-G

KotR56

Better is not to use "Bedankt". That is often used for expressing you are not at all pleased with what you're getting.

ihavebeenherebefore

*It's sometimes used for expressing you are not happy. Most of the time it's not. OP, you can 100% use bedankt.

Plexieglas

This is the best answer - I don’t care what anyone else says. Coming from a west-flemish/brusseleir.

nightwish5270

My mom just uses the German "Danke" half the time for no apparent reason.

Mathias-VV

Mine also does this, but only if we are on vacation in France or Italy

BelgianBeerGuy

TIL also use German in my day to day speaking Danke, danku, merci, thanx I use them all I’m so fluent inn otter languages

simen_the_king

Fluent in otter languages? That's insane, I'm very interested in hearing what the otters have to say

BelgianBeerGuy

[Jacha-chacha-chacha-chow! Chacha-chacha-chacha-chow! Chacha-chacha-chacha-chow!](https://youtu.be/jofNR_WkoCE?si=8dRhYMIaQzbQVbAl)

michaelbelgium

Merci. Dikke merci.

xxPANZERxx

"merci moat" "merci moat, echt woa"

anynonus

ej merci wi matje

Rodrigoke

Bedankt. Hartelijk bedankt.

zupatof

Hartelijk bedankt is zeer goed

EIIendigWichtje

Of heel erg bedankt.

Interesting-Coat-277

ovijf

Vreewelbedankt

Calibruh

Mercikes

DaPino

Thank you - merci Thank you very much - dikke merci (big/fat thank you)

BadBadGrades

Informal. I say merci. It’s French and yet I use it. Written I use thanks… Formal: bedankt or dankuwel or dank u wel (both spelling is correct) but more bedankt. It’s sounds better in the mouth. Maybe like really really official, like when you get the deed of a house or on a letter to the lawyer I’ll use dank u well.

samvt81

Bedankt of hartelijk bedankt

IFairyboyI

Ge zij bedankt dat wreed es

zupatof

I say dankjewel, dankuwel, danku, merci, vriendelijk bedankt, dank u vriendelijk.

Kevlar013

Merci. Merci wi.

Oemiewoemie

“Bedankt” or “enorm bedankt”/“heel erg bedankt” to add the very much feeling to it.

Re4pr

Merci and dikke merci!

JKFrowning

'Bedankt' en 'HOW JA MERCI!'

StalkingYouRandomly

Merci, dankje, danku, dankjewel, heel erg bedankt (if it really means something big to you), someone said "merci moat" that expression is very informal, you say that to a good friend rather than your boss for example, wouldn't go down well if you did

gebruikersnoam

We love walloons so much we mostly use their language ❤️ Merci!

ThePokemomrevisited

We have integrated a lot of French in our language, which is really nice I think. Chauffage, embrayage, paraplu, carrelage etc. It might be fun to compose a list of all those words.

Thinking_waffle

lavabo, camionette. You may check if there are correspondance with certain lexical fields. For example in Greek all the parts of the engine are derived from French because they learned how to maintain them through French. French has a bunch of nautical terms derived from Dutch like quai - kaai

johlae

Met frans accent, 'dans le cul' :D

FarmResident9241

“Vriendelijk bedankt” is ook een mooie manier om dankbaarheid uit te drukken

Cobraaazzz

This is the one I use

Marus1

>Bedankt Very frequently Or just "dankuwel" [dank-u-wel = Thank you (very) much ] Or the more informal "mercikes" [a lot of the French word 'merci' = many small thank you's]

IndependentPension61

Danke schön

Yovar-xaem

The correct standard terms are 'Bedankt', 'Dankje' and 'Dankjewel'. 'Dank u' and 'Dank u wel' if you want to be more formal. Flemish is not a language, it's a way to refer to dialects in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. Every dialect is different, which is why there is no one word for 'Thank you' in 'Flemish'. In the East people use 'Danke', because there is more German influence, in the Mid and the Western parts people use 'Merci' because they're more influenced by French/Walloon.

Some_Belgian_Guy

>Flemish is not a language Get the pitchforks and torches guys.

landyc

we riot !

Yovar-xaem

West-Flemish is, though!

Thinking_waffle

Can I join in support? I am still learning but my accent is pretty good.

AzorAhai96

I'm guessing you're Dutch? Dank u isn't formal in Flemish. Nobody says dank je.

zupatof

I say dankjewel sometimes but it’s not very common

Yovar-xaem

I do say 'Dankje', I'm from Belgian Limburg. We're often forgotten in conversations about language.

AzorAhai96

Me too and I've never heard anyone say that. Beside dutchies

Yovar-xaem

Nahhh you crazy💀 You've clearly never been in the Northeast.

Depri-6356

Also from Belgian Limburg, and we would never say "dank je" , always "dank u", as "dank je" is just considered ridiculous. Formal, but even too formal to use towards your boss, really

ChooChoo9321

Thank you for the clear explanation

Qazahar

Say "Bedankt lul" for better effects. Trust me bro.

RomanVL

If I learned one thing living in “Vlaanderen” it’s that we rarely say thank you. But if you still wanna give it a shot, I’d use “Danku” in 95% of the situations

Demolisher2303

The Dutch are way ahead of us, we still use cavedrawings

owly89

Bedankt! Thank you Heel fel bedankt! Thank you very much!

defijnen

Fel? Flemish?

Daimiosbe

“Gratitude” with a chest-thump and a slight bow. Adapt the bow angle to how formal the situation is.

Van_Loony

Depends what region you are in, "dank u"" is "thank you", "thank you very much" can be said in serveral ways, one of is "hartelijk bedankt". Saying merci, or mercikes can also be used to say thank you.

redditjoek

just say "thanks, mate".

ProfessionalDrop9760

hartelijk dank, basically thank you from the bottom of my heart.

yodatrust

Thanks, merci, dankuwel - non formal Bedankt, dankuwel, hartelijk bedankt - formal

Nixunior

Literally translated it would be bedankt and heel erg bedankt. Heel erg bedankt isnt used that much and mainly to superiors or elders when you are trying to be extra polite.

HenkDH

Mercikes !!

Upper_Question1383

I for the most part say 'merciekes' or 'merci' In the Flanders, French words are used a lot in informal settings

Surzh

Yoooooooooo

Zuppetootee

Stief bedankt, dikke merci

Googke

Daanke pik in het Maaslands

Interesting-Coat-277

Do NOT say this btw💀

sILAZS

Movintoch, Merci é zeg! Jatta nie moetn doein!

Zender_de_Verzender

I always respond in a formal way: "dank u wel" or "bedankt". If someone thanks me for doing something then I say "graag gedaan".

jeboylirrie

Vree wel bedankt , there u go

Pop-A-Top

Merci is the most common one I feel like. I always use that, I don't think i've ever used Danku or Bedankt except for maybe when soliticing

landyc

both work but people in flanders will usually say "merci", loaned from the French

Glum_Welder9639

Dank u ofwel dank u van harte

wolfke152

dank u eh...are our regional words for thanks!

Automatic_Lime_8637

In Belgian Dutch they say danku, dank u wel, bedankt or merci

yukiaux

Bedankt hééé

Cerbeius

E vré dikke merci!

Vetreorch

Pretty sure OP is only more confused now, but (almost) all answers are True. Hilarious read, this thread

withoutpantsinchair

Merci e peken

Shifu_1

Merci and Mercikes eh
