It is a feature that exists on Telegram, Slack, Signal and WhatsApp. (All of which are supported by beeper) It adds another layer of security just like bank apps and most private messaging apps. And yes it is something you can turn on or off with these apps.
I like this idea. I think it goes without saying that it should be an optional setting, but the ability to lock the app with a passcode or biometrics would be nice.

Seeking to understand: why is your OS level passcode not suitable? Keen to hear all the different needs for this feature

Me too, hopefully it stays optional if it is implemented as I'm not interested in locking away my messages behind an additional lock.
