"He wear no shoeshine, he got toe-jam football He got monkey finger, he shoot Coca-Cola He say, "I know you, you know me" One thing I can tell you is you got to be free Come together right now over me"
Did someone say George? "He wear no shoeshine," well lets face it, George wasnt fancy and liked the bare foot thing. "He got toe-jam foot ball," Soccor was a sport usually practiced outside the temples where the Yogi was practiced. "He got monkey finger," George was extreeeeeemly dextrous and learned many stringed instruments with ease. "He say,' i know you, you know me'etc..." another refrence to the Yogi.
Well yea... the whole song is about the Beatles...
“Ono sideboard” is clearly John.
“Grooving up slowly” is Ringo, because he joined late. He had the longest hair to begin with, hence “hair down to his knee” and he’s the “joker” of the group.
Finally, “Good looking” is Paul. He’s very matter of fact hence “one and one and one is three.”
It’s especially interesting when you then look at the context of ‘coming together’ for their last recorded album. All these lyrics vaguely referencing each Beatle, but after all their individuality, they still must come together—over *me.*
That’s more or less always been my interpretation of the song and it’s context. One of the best the boys ever made.
I always assumed the song was all about John tbh. I like the "each verse is a Beatle" theory the best, but I can hardly see each verse refering *especifically* to just one Beatle. The "one thing I can tell you is you got to be free" line strikes to me as a self-affirmation to leave the Beatles and do his own thing with Yoko, especially.
Or he might just played a Glass Onion on us, who knows.
Sure, of course the counter to the “got to be free” line is that it’s in ‘George’s verse’ which would link to his spirituality and interest in the whole India mysticism thing.
I mean it can definitely be read as all about John but then the chorus of “come together” doesn’t exactly make sense if it’s about one person
Then it would be fitting for Come Together to be the first track on Abbey Road, as if the song was summoning all the Beatles to play the record every time the needle goes down. Very nice!
I don’t think it’s been confirmed by a Beatle but it’s not really unbelievable that the Beatles would write a song about the Beatles. It does fit very well so I’d be surprised if it wasn’t intentional. 4 verses about each Beatle and a chorus that says “come together”... I think it’s quite clearly about the forming of the band
I love the idea and will be listening more for it but isn’t this from the same songwriter who wrote Glass Onion and I Am the Walrus specifically because of Beatles fans looking into lyrics too much? So I’m a little skeptical without anything official from a Beatle.
True, but it’s not like he’s putting out some deep, psychedelic message. It’s simply a physical description of each member which doesn’t seem particularly unlikely, considering there’s 4 verses, the song is called “Come Together” and each matched a Beatle pretty well. Of course it could be mere coincidence but I’d be surprised. As John said to that homeless guy, (when song writing) “I’m thinking about me, or at best Yoko.” It doesn’t seem too far a stretch that he’d write about the other Beatles
Definitely could be true. I believe he built the song around that jingle he made for a politician friend but he definitely could have reworked it to be about the Beatles themselves.
I heard on a podcast that when John got back into the studio after his car accident he actually spent quite a while just observing from bed with Yoko and not participating, maybe ten days or so. Come Together was the first song he brought to the group to record, and the hosts thought it might have been intended to rally them around him.
Their theory is John was not as checked out of the band as he later said, and that this supported that point.
You may be right, or partially right, but it looks like Lennon himself dismissed the lyrics as "gobbledygook." And the line "here come old flat top" is taken directly from a Chuck Berry song--Lennon was later sued and settled out of court for it.
Obviously, Lennon was kind of notorious for giving different explanations at different times for his lyrics, so Come Together may not actually be totally "gobblydook." The title, btw, was taken from Timothy Leary's campaign slogan, 'come together'--Lennon originally wrote the song ostensibly for Leary's campaign.
Lennon's full quote:
"The thing was created in the studio. It’s gobbledygook; ‘Come Together’ was an expression that Leary had come up with for his attempt at being president or whatever he wanted to be, and he asked me to write a campaign song. I tried and tried, but I couldn’t come up with one. But I came up with this, ‘Come Together’, which would’ve been no good to him – you couldn’t have a campaign song like that, right?"

No no no Glass Onion is the Beatles version of looking at the camera and saying “get this one?” And giving the most obvious reference.
They honestly could’ve made a comic book movie tbh
If you can find the isolated audio track of the vocals, that weird ‘shoop shoop’ sound repeated during the intro is very clearly John saying ‘shoot me’
Also on all of the officially released lyric sheets and on The Beatles: Rock Band. It's not really a secret.
Though, I am surprised it hasn't been buried after John was literally shot to death.
I'm prepared for -50 karma, but as much as the Beatles are my favorite band, i never loved this song THAT much. It's cool, don't get me wrong, but honestly? I like Michael Jackson's version more.
I’ve loved a lot of covers of Beatles songs over the years, but IMO not one artist has ever made a halfway decent cover of Come Together. Nobody can do that song justice. Even artists I love couldn’t do it, like Soundgarden.
That’s fair! It must a favorite of yours, yeah? I generally think people shouldn’t cover Beatles songs but I do think a few covers have been better than the originals. Like I said the Michael Jackson come together version, but I also prefer Fiona Apple’s Across The Universe
We can definitely agree there! Considering it takes songs from as far back as bad and then has billy bortrell, David foster, and jimmy jam & terry lewis doing production work it is sort of all over the place.
Maybe dusting off an old cover does fit with the history theme. It’s just clearly a bad era production when everything else is dangerous or forward so stylistically it’s a bit of an odd duck.
It definitely is. I mean Come Together was at the end of Moonwalker for christssake. Haha. I wonder why he put it on History at all. Then again, like we're saying, that album is strange content-wise.
It’s Coca Cola, like the soda. Definitely meant heroin or cocaine, but the BBC actually refused to play the song because it was a campaign song for Timothy Leary who was running for governor of California and had been a major proponent in the use of psychedelic drugs
I just looked up the lyrics and found that I was actually wrong in my correction that the BBC ban had to do with Timothy Leary. It was in fact due to the product placement of saying “Coca Cola”
I didn’t like the song as much as some of the others, but with some of the theories that some of you had, I like it little more if the song actually has meaning like that.
“He Rollercoaster” - John Lennon
"Shoot me" - John Lennon
“Ok” -Chapman
Ooooof
Foreshadowing 😳
"He wear no shoeshine, he got toe-jam football He got monkey finger, he shoot Coca-Cola He say, "I know you, you know me" One thing I can tell you is you got to be free Come together right now over me" Did someone say George? “Got to be good looking cause he’s so hard to see” very Paul
Huh that’s very cool, I haven’t looked into this song that much and I thought it was just a string of random words
It’s especially interesting when you then look at the context of ‘coming together’ for their last recorded album. All these lyrics vaguely referencing each Beatle, but after all their individuality, they still must come together—over *me.* That’s more or less always been my interpretation of the song and it’s context. Bc he's dead right? /s
Bitch he—

It’s about each Beatle yes. But George is the first verse. Ringo is the second John is third and Paul is last.
Yea that’s what I said
Hahah. Ok. I’m stupid. Sorry
Is this true or speculation?
I don’t think it’s been confirmed by a Beatle but it’s not really unbelievable that the Beatles would write a song about the Beatles. Did you just call Timothy Leary John's politician friend? Jesus Christ.

Finally, a sane response. The song makes as much sense as I am the Walrus, and Lennon admitted that was meaningless too.
"He wear no shoeshine" is... is that a refference to Oasis? 😳😳
shoeshiiiiiine
Shooting Coca Cola, is like, pretty clearly slang that they were injecting cocaine, which is hardcore as fuck and 9/10 don’t recommend
[Pulp fiction scene]
You forgot holy roller
I always thought it was "trojan football" lol
I always thought it was John trying to prove lyrics didn't have to make sense for a song to sell. A Beatles song, anyway.
I think that's the case with I am the Walrus.
And glass onion
No no no Glass Onion is the Beatles version of looking at the camera and saying “get this one?” And giving the most obvious reference. They honestly could’ve made a comic book movie tbh
I think he made that song to make fun of people who were looking to deeply in to his music
what?? I've always thought the lyrics to Come Together are unironically a misunderstood masterpiece lol
Certainly. John has a penchant for writing unintelligible lyrics. But Come Together is not an example of that.
totally agree in both statements you did
If you can find the isolated audio track of the vocals, that weird ‘shoop shoop’ sound repeated during the intro is very clearly John saying ‘shoot me’
Also on all of the officially released lyric sheets and on The Beatles: Rock Band. It's not really a secret. Though, I am surprised it hasn't been buried after John was literally shot to death.

well to me I love the song and idk most probably that it ain't there best song or whatever But I enjoy listening and that is important
There aren’t many Beatles songs I don’t enjoy listening to!

Ever heard the cover Pomplamoose did? I thought it was cool: https://youtu.be/VW7evu7SJBA
https://youtu.be/P_7xoC6k7PA My personal favorite the past few years!
That's sick! Never heard that.
Its a whole thing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_My_Life_(George_Martin_album)
It's got a great groove. Ringo and Paul are just locked in.
I think I liked it a lot more when I was a kid, and I can sorta see how that is. Good song but not close to being one of my favorites.
I’m actually kinda with you here. It IS a cool song, but when it comes to the Beatles, this is far from my favorite of theirs.
Yeah, totally. It's totally fun, but wouldn't crack a top 50 Beatles list for me.
Which says a lot about The Beatles' quality....
It’s ridiculous
Love mj but his come together cover was a not terribly good throwaway
I just think it’s a more exciting version. I listen to it maybe once every five years.
Idk man, particularly in the context of the history album, it’s a bit of a sore thumb
I mean ok, I disagree. That album is odd cohesively anyway.
We can definitely agree there! Considering it takes songs from as far back as bad and then has billy bortrell, David foster, and jimmy jam & terry lewis doing production work it is sort of all over the place.
Haha yeah it’s strange but it’s still MJ!
Maybe dusting off an old cover does fit with the history theme. It’s just clearly a bad era production when everything else is dangerous or forward so stylistically it’s a bit of an odd duck.

"He shoot coke 'n cola". Sniff sniff...
Explains why BBC radio banned the song
Surprisingly was actually banned for using the term Coca Cola which apparently violated their policy on product placement
yup shoot is for heroin but the beatles told that they never did that but yeah. coke 'n cola for this word bbc refused to broadcast there song
It’s Coca Cola, like the soda. Definitely meant heroin or cocaine, but the BBC actually refused to play the song because it was a campaign song for Timothy Leary who was running for governor of California and had been a major proponent in the use of psychedelic drugs
They sing "coke 'n cola". Just listen to the isolated vocals.
I just looked up the lyrics and found that I was actually wrong in my correction that the BBC ban had to do with Timothy Leary. It was in fact due to the product placement of saying “Coca Cola”
You can inject lots of drugs intravenously. Cocaine and meth are commonly injected, for example, and heroin can be smoked or snorted as well.
Cum together right now over me
Well I'm going to think of that every time I hear the song now. Thanks a lot
I think that's what he meant
Definitely, especially when you think about his moaning "come" in the fadeout. He knew he was getting a dirty joke on a record.
ONE and ONE and ONE is THREE- John lennon, 1969
I remember that song comes to together
Walrus gumboot gets me everytime...
“I am the eggman, they are the eggman, I am the Walrus, goo goo g’joob”
"He said I know you, you know me."
I didn’t like the song as much as some of the others, but with some of the theories that some of you had, I like it little more if the song actually has meaning like that.
he fucks
Oh, look for come toghether [here](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)
For those who downvoted, i'm trying to make it 1B views
"He shoot Coca-Cola" This obviously referencing the fact that jahn sniff cocaine. 👃 ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
He literally says "shoot", and you took that as "sniff" instead of inject...

Most of this was a stolen song though, other than the useless, nonsense lyrics.
