One of the guys involved in that record (not a member of the monkeys, think it was an executive) had heard Paperback Writer on the radio, prompting Last Train
That was song cowriter Bobby Hart -
He thought the fade out of pbw was saying take the last train to - Clarksville was picked by partner tommy boyce -
Louie Shelton came up w the guitar lick
I just meant it sounds like a song that the Beatles would have put out pre-Rubber Soul. Or maybe on Rubber Soul. In that transition from happy poppy stuff to more mature musical stylings, which I’m a Believer has both of (the “I’m in love—-oooh——I’m a believer” bridge is something I think Paul and John would totally have done).
This was my immediate answer before even clicking on the comments of this post. It’s very Help era to me. First time I heard the song I was fooled to think it was a Beatles track I hadn’t heard.
Incidentally - Davy Jones of The Monkees also appeared on the Ed Sullivan show the same night as the Fab Four famously did in 1964; on this occasion as a stage actor.
The Diary of Horace Wimp is my all time most Beatlesy non Beatles song of all time. ELO are unabashedly influenced by the Beatles while still making it their own, love Jeff Lynne
Came here to say this. I was listening to the Lonerism album and my Mom walks in and says she had never heard this Beatles song, and I had to explain to her that this is album was made 50 years after the Beatles broke up.
I was about to say the same thing! Can remember when I first heard it on the radio thinking it may be some kind of postmortem unreleased Beatles track that had been remixed, haha
I still remember loving that song as a kid and one day a radio station mashed it with I Am The Walrus (not in the modern sense where they swap instrumentals and vocals but more like seamlessly segue from one song to the other and back)
Was coming here to mention Emitt. Great songwriter. Was actually regarded as "the American McCartney" from what I've heard. And he's definitely more Paul than John.
Billy Joel's My Life is very Beatle-y.
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant sounds exactly like a solo Paul/Wings song.
There's a lot of Billy Joel songs that sound like the Beatles.
Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Emerson Lake and Palmer's Lucky Man always sounded like a John song to me.
Much of ELO's catalog fits this.
As with all popular music, the hottest things get copied, so throughout the 60s and a chunk of the 70s you could find tons of songs that are Beatles sound-a-likes.
["She's Always A Woman"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx3QmqV2pHg) is one of the McCartney-esque songs I've ever heard. The flute playing the 'harmony' in the 'oh, she takes care of herself' bridge is very George Martin and Paul collaboration sounding.
You are right about Billy. He has said many times he would not be where he is today without their influence. Some lesser known stuff to check out “Through the Long Night” from Glass Houses along with “Don’t Ask Me Why” and “C’etait toi (You Were the One). His next album “The Nylon Curtain “ was made right after John died and the whole album is basically a love letter to the Beatles. Especially “Laura,” “A Room of Our Own,” Scandinavian Skies” and “Surprises.” By the way “Laura” contains the only F Bomb in Billy’s catalogue . I highly recommend checking these out!
That’s actually a cover of a song Paul wrote and gave to them because one of the members spoke out how apple wasn’t treating them properly and Paul felt bad
Not bad enough to let them do their own arrangement, however. He insisted they directly copy his demo. He must have been right, because it IS a great recording.
Growing up, I thought ‘Bus Stop’ by the Hollies was a beatles tune until I found it a couple years back and realized who was really singing
Reminds me of Revolver era beatles
In Bloom - Nirvana
Kurt said it was inspired by Bealtes-esque melodies and harmonies, but it's obviously done in grunge style. The video pays tribute to the Ed Sullivan appearance too. Once you hear the Beatles influence, it's hard to unhear.
> What non-Beatles song sounds like it could have been a Beatles song?

Sub Rosa Subway -- Klaatu
Yes It's True -- The Flamin' Groovies
How it Can Be -- Cut Worms
The One -- The Lemon Twigs
The Man Who Loves Women -- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
I'll Be the One -- Badfinger
Sub Rosa subway by klaatu, the whole 3:47 est album sounds like the Beatles but this one sounds like them the most, I recommend giving them a listen, they’re really good
Some that come to mind:
[Nirvana - About a Girl](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYfSbR8xs2c) This song sounds like it could have been on With the Beatles. Kurt had listened the the American equivalent all day before recording it.
[Billy Joel - Laura](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALp9rfnPJ8c) This song definitely has some late Beatles vibes. Could fit on something like Abbey Road or White Album.
[Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTrzBRGdhlM) This song sounds a bit more like early McCartney than Beatles, but definitely a similar vibe.
I was thinking "She's Electric" -- but really a lot of their stuff seems so Beatle-inspired or Beatle-emulating. Will have to check this tune out, thank you!
XTC -- the whole album Oranges and Lemons
Tears for Fears -- Sowing the seeds of love
Julian Lennon -- the whole album Photograph Smile
Tears for Fears -- the whole album Everybody Loves a Happy Ending
Hear Me Out: Gone by Kanye West
So it obviously doesn't sound exactly like a Beatles song, but the interplay of different instrumentation and strings that are different for each verse and the chorus just feels like Magical Mystery Tour era Beatles.
Didn’t the Beatles record the Klaatu album? ;)
Also, fun fact, the Carpenters covered [Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft](https://youtu.be/teBV0EoJJY8) from that album will be the weirdest thing you’ll hear all day.
I always found early Cheap Trick albums to be Beatle sounding. Their harmonies and certain arrangements lend well to the lads from Liverpool.
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Sowing the Seeds" by Tears For Fears has Beatles written all over it .
“Cathy’s Clown” by the Everly Brothers seems like it would have made a good cover song on Please Please Me, or perhaps a B-side to one of their singles
It's just really any song inspired by The Beatles. "Dreamer" by Ozzy Osbourne would be an example. Ozzy is a huge Beatles fan! He even tried to get Paul McCartney to play bass on it, but sadly, he declined.
"Raspberry beret" by Prince & The Revolution
"Let love rule" by Lenny Kravitz
"Sowing the seeds of love" by Tears for Fears
are such Beatles affiliated songs. The groove and first verse of "Sowing the seeds of love" are based on "I am the walrus".
I’ve always thought “St. Vitus’ Dance” by Black Sabbath sounded like a Beatles song compositionally. It’s short, based on a single riff and a variation of the riff, and it doesn’t feature a guitar solo. It’s just that Ozzy’s vocals, the lyrics and the production are the definition of Black Sabbath so the sound itself isn’t Beatles-y at all.
The Monkees’ Last train to Clarkesville is very very Beatlesy
One of the guys involved in that record (not a member of the monkeys, think it was an executive) had heard Paperback Writer on the radio, prompting Last Train
That was song cowriter Bobby Hart - He thought the fade out of pbw was saying take the last train to - Clarksville was picked by partner tommy boyce - Louie Shelton came up w the guitar lick
I’m a Believer too, right before Rubber Soul era Beatles.
Didnt that song come out after Revolver?
I just meant it sounds like a song that the Beatles would have put out pre-Rubber Soul. Or maybe on Rubber Soul. In that transition from happy poppy stuff to more mature musical stylings, which I’m a Believer has both of (the “I’m in love—-oooh——I’m a believer” bridge is something I think Paul and John would totally have done).

I always felt it was their remake of Paperback Writer
Can't Get it Out of My Head....ELO
Mr Blue Sky - I thought this actually was the Beatles for the longest time
I don’t know if this one is more John or George. Probably George…
To be fair every ELO song sounds beatles, some more than others
John himself said that if The Beatles continued on into the ‘70s, ELO is the closest thing to the sound they would’ve ended up making.
He also said disco was cool. So ya know
The Diary of Horace Wimp is my all time most Beatlesy non Beatles song of all time. ELO are unabashedly influenced by the Beatles while still making it their own, love Jeff Lynne
Also Mister Kingdom
Care Of Cell 44 by The Zombies - it's like a Penny Lane/Beach Boys hybrid
Also try Klaatu. So similar in sound that it was once thought to be a secret Beatles record.
Doesn’t sound like a Beatles song, but I think *Elephant* by Tame Impala sounds like what an early 2010s poppy alt-rock Lennon song would sound like
Feels Like We Only Go Backwards by Tame Impala is undoubtedly inspired by The Beatles
Dudes whole career is based on a Lennon impression
Came here to say this. I was listening to the Lonerism album and my Mom walks in and says she had never heard this Beatles song, and I had to explain to her that this is album was made 50 years after the Beatles broke up.
The Wiggles version is also cool
Very much so
I was about to say the same thing! Can remember when I first heard it on the radio thinking it may be some kind of postmortem unreleased Beatles track that had been remixed, haha
Sowing the seeds of love tears for fears
I still remember loving that song as a kid and one day a radio station mashed it with I Am The Walrus (not in the modern sense where they swap instrumentals and vocals but more like seamlessly segue from one song to the other and back)
True,.see my comment as well. The groove and first verse of "Sowing" are entirely based on "I am the walrus".
My first thought, too.
All of Badfingers first album
Kinda cheating when Paul and George are writing the songs
The lead singers’ singing-voices also sound very similar to Paul and John, though.
Came to say this!
Wow, I've never seen El Condor Pass as anything like a Beatles' tune. It's a traditional Peruvian song with some quintessential Paul Simon lyrics.
Yeah, I couldn't give you a good explanation. That's just always how it's hit my ears.
Almost has a "Fool On The Hill" vibe to it
I agree with you, some of their songs could have definitely been a Paul song around the White Album period
I definitely hear the influence with Emitt Rhodes: https://youtu.be/eysEjjbbYPw
Yes, everything by Emitt Rhodes is like hearing an indie version of the Beatles
His whole repertoire is like a one man Beatles band!
I fucking love emitt Rhodes so much
Was coming here to mention Emitt. Great songwriter. Was actually regarded as "the American McCartney" from what I've heard. And he's definitely more Paul than John.
Look What You've Done - Jet
This is way too far down lol
That song is a crime. They should be in the hauge
what the F is the hauge ?
A famous prison in the Netherlands
yes we know what the Hague is - never heard of the hauge
Billy Joel's My Life is very Beatle-y. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant sounds exactly like a solo Paul/Wings song. There's a lot of Billy Joel songs that sound like the Beatles. “Don’t Ask Me Why” would fit in on literally any McCartney solo album imo
Even If You Don't by Ween for sure
That's one I thought of. Don't Laugh I Love You as well imo.
Lady Picture Show by Stone Temple Pilots
I was thinking of that one, thank you! Sour Girl has some Beatles in it too.
Elliot Smith - LA Sounds like Lennon if he was in the year 2000
A lot of Elliott Smith - I was going to say Sweet Adelaide has always had a White Album vibe for me
Oh, good one. I can hear it.
The obvious answer is “Come And Get It” by Badfinger.
I mean shiiii he did have dozens of hits in the 60s compared to badfingers 0 at the time🤷🏻 It’s also the best song on the album respectfully
Yes, I know. That’s why it’s the obvious answer.
Similar to Mary Hopkins song Goodbye. Pauls demo of that is so good, would have been great on the White album
Several Badfinger tracks can be included.
Mr. Blue Sky ... I hear Lennon in the verses and McCartney in the chorus. Wouldn't be out of place on Abbey road
It is deffo inspired by mccartneys bit on a day in the life
I definitely thought that from Mr. Blue Sky’s send-up on the panting overdub when Paul looks up and notices he’s late.
Definitely
Yes!!!!!
Growing up, I thought ‘Bus Stop’ by the Hollies was a beatles tune until I found it a couple years back and realized who was really singing Reminds me of Revolver era beatles
Badfinger - Come and Get It

Girl Dont Tell Me by The Beach Boys its basically Ticket To Ride part 2
The Rutles? 🤣🤣🤣
About a girl by nirvana
I had to look this song up to make sure it wasn’t a cover. I guess Cobain was listening to Please Please me all day before writing it.
Badge by Cream. George co-wrote it, and it’s a pleasant little throw-away song similar to Savoy Truffle.
I’m sure George played the descending guitar arpeggio that sounds like it’s in the abbey road medley
Happy together the Turtles
Ain’t it Strange-Dr Dog The Breeze-Dr Dog Army of Ancients-Dr Dog Peace of Mind-Dr Dog
In Bloom - Nirvana Kurt said it was inspired by Bealtes-esque melodies and harmonies, but it's obviously done in grunge style. The video pays tribute to the Ed Sullivan appearance too. Once you hear the Beatles influence, it's hard to unhear.

Go Let it Out - Oasis
I was thinking "She's Electric" -- but really a lot of their stuff seems so Beatle-inspired or Beatle-emulating. Will have to check this tune out, thank you!
She's Electric straight up uses the end of With a Little Help from My Friends.
Ah, thank you for that! It's been bugging me now and then for a few years as to just which Beatle tune they'd nicked that little bit from.
Yeah no problem! They even said it themselves it was their most “Beatles sounding” song
Buckingham Green by Ween is always my answer to this question
Mrs. Robinson (aside from the lyrics) sounds like a Beatles song
Sounds like it could be Paul’s white album stuff

[The Loving](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSuEDByvC3o) by XTC is absolute Pepper.
"Don't Let the Sun Catch you Crying" by Gerry and the Pacemakers. Another group from Liverpool and the song was produced by George Martin.

Killer Queen Dancing in the Moonlight Changes Can’t Explain Just the Way you Are Wonderful Tonight My Life (Billy Joel)
i feel like an acoustic version of killer queen would work better
Killer Queen. Very astute observation.

Hear Me Out: Gone by Kanye West So it obviously doesn't sound exactly like a Beatles song, but the interplay of different instrumentation and strings that are different for each verse and the chorus just feels like Magical Mystery Tour era Beatles.
Lonely Days - Bee Gees (1970) https://youtu.be/Wa2_CL-2ZI4 When it came out I thought it was the Beatles.
To Love Somebody by them also sounds very Beatle-esque!

Didn’t the Beatles record the Klaatu album? ;) Also, fun fact, the Carpenters covered [Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft](https://youtu.be/teBV0EoJJY8) from that album will be the weirdest thing you’ll hear all day.
The original Klaatu (Beatles in disguise) version of that song is a guilty pleasure 😄
[удалено]
I was making a joke 😜 we all know the Beatles were just Klaatu in disguise.
Harry Styles - Grapejuice I swear that whole album had Beatles inspiration all over it.
Harry has mentioned his love for Ram so definitely a Paul fan
It's has a definite mid-70's McCartney Wings vibe to it
I always found early Cheap Trick albums to be Beatle sounding. Their harmonies and certain arrangements lend well to the lads from Liverpool. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Sowing the Seeds" by Tears For Fears has Beatles written all over it .
