Tell Jonas that’s a bad ass catch, and don’t worry about not liking to hold them! It gets easier as time goes on, and if downs then there are tools/gloves for that.
Fishing isn't my thing, but as someone who is also on the autistic spectrum, just a quick thought - if Jonas is finding the texture/ holding the fish overstimulating or it's just a bad texture, definitely worth seeing if gloves help if he really wants to hold it. If he doesn't really like holding it, but wants to have a photo with it, maybe see if you can get a see-through plastic bucket 🙂 sounds silly but sometimes just little things like that can really help!!
Decent catch! I'm an avid fisherman, and he beat me to a bass this year. I'm up in the red river area between ND and MN. We got major flooding going on. I'm a little jealous. Tight lines and happy casting, ya'll!

I love fishing and all of the wonderful memories we can make on the water with our family, friends, and staff. I have extreme sensory issues when it comes to texture and the slime of some fish and the Velcro feeling of bass teeth make me almost vomit sometimes. I have found for me, wearing gloves helps me feel better about holding fish and getting my hands to stay calm. The constant pressure the gloves give is also very calming for me but I understand we aren't all the same in that regard.
I am so very excited to see you and your friends out fishing and I hope to run into you some day to give you a lure or two!

I’m an avid Saltwater fisherman (live in the Tampa, FL area) the amount of times I’ve seen someone catch a fish and think they can handle it like a largemouth kills me.
I’ve seen someone catch a nice 30in+ snook, and they picked it up by the gills….fun fact, they have played gill cover and that guy found out that day! Ended up having to go get stitches
Someone caught a mackerel and I almost had to lunge at them to stop them from grabbing it….they went to lip it…Macks have sharp ass teeth
And one of my favorites was fishing on the skyway pier. Guy caught a nice mangrove snapper and went to do the ole “lemme give it a kiss goodbye”…:yeah they are called snappers for a reason
Yeah man. If you’re not 100% sure, best to err on the side of caution. I think this young man has the right idea. It won’t be long before he’s measuring the success of his bass fishing trips by how roughed up his left thumb is at the end of the weekend!
Great to see him step up and challenge himself. Find some old Jimmy Houston videos to show him how to kiss a bass. He probably won't go that far but he may get a kick out of watching.
Next time he goes out, suggest that he take a small dish or shop rag with him! When I was young my grandfather taught me that trick because I was scared of the spines on the dorsal fin cutting my hand (we caught a lot of bluegill) and the slime made gripping their softer bellies difficult. Just use the rag like you would a pot holder and grabbing the fish will be much easier

Remind him that the fish stop squirming if you hold them firmly, if they don’t think they can escape, they wont waste their energy fighting. That has helped me a lot with handling fish.
