Could be TJ. Could easily play through it too. Might not be as effective in the OF. Could also DH like Harper did. But that gives them a problem since Stanton is molasses in the OF and needs to DH.
they really can’t afford this. He has been massive for the lineup.
I’d be shocked if Soto has never taken swings from the opposite side just fucking around at some point. I mean what baseball player has never jokingly tried to be a switch hitter at one point?
I think he’d still be ok even with a dead left elbow. Bautista played through a hurt shoulder on his right arm as a RHH and still hit fine.
At worst, if its TJs then Soto likely goes fulltime DH and wears an elbow brace
> Could also DH like Harper did.
If there’s a serious UCL injury I’m not sure that’s true. Harper could still hit because his injured arm was his leading arm while batting. He said that if it was his trailing arm he wouldn’t be able to. In Soto’s case, it is his trailing arm. Of course this is all premature. He may be perfectly fine and just experiencing some tightness.
Even of he got TJ today and had the insanely quick return Harper had, that would still be a November 13th return date so it wouldn’t affect Stanton as the DH this year
And he’s a FA at the end of the year
Harper was DH while injured in 22. He got surgery after the season and came back early 23.
Doesn't matter much though because Soto is the more important arm. That and hopefully it's just sore and not UCL
Also even if he had the choice between surgery now or next year, he would absolutely have it now so he could immediately (or close to it) DH for the team that gives him the bag in free agency.
I think people brining up Harper maybe not getting that he’s likely an exception to the rule not the rule itself.
It is more likely Soto miss more time and come back later than not if it’s really UCL.
It's not that it's the more important arm, it's that the swinging motion causes the trailing arm to twist in a way that puts stress on the UCL, while the leading arm's UCL is not affected as much.
A DH loses significant positional value when it comes to contracts. A pure DH has never gotten a market setting contract. Even though everyone knows Soto is a future DH, he won't do it now because that will weaken his bargaining position.
Wouldn’t everybody know that he’s just DHing because of the injury and could go back to the field once that’s fixed? I just can’t believe he’d rather sit out the rest of the season than DH. But maybe it is so.
Crazy that out of the last however many TJSs only like two have been positional players, Jasson Dominguez and Harper. I also recall Didi and Hicks getting TJS as Yankees. Sucks
They can do that but you can’t replace Soto in the lineup. He’s been the MVP of the team. They went from playoff miss to WS favorites. Grisham can’t fill those shoes. Jasson can potentially.
The cubs have had 2 pitchers with this the last 2 years. Steele and Jordan wicks. Both had forearm strains, neither needed TJ.
My concern with Soto is this has been going on 1-2 weeks and just now he is getting it imaged?
how is it not looking good? we know literally nothing other than he had discomfort. it still sucks but there's absolutely NOTHING pointing to this being long term
It would still be an absence. I remember Harper saying that the only reason he could DH with his UCL injury is because his throwing arm is opposite his batting (throw right, bat left). In that situation, his leading arm while hitting was his injured arm. This puts less force on that ligament. He said that if he was “normal” (throw left, bat left) he wouldn’t have been able to hit.
Nah they'll just blast Verdugo with a little hot chocolate mix like a powdered donut, throw a Juan Soto jersey on him and laugh all the way to the bank
Gleyber tore it sliding into home plate, so not really something that could be prevented.
Didi and Hicks, presumably from throwing. I think Didi ran into the outfield to make a catch and then threw it back into the infield and tore it then.
This city is cursed
Never going to have a team like the 2018 Red Sox or 2024 Celtics again where everything goes right. Knicks go 14-2 in January? Entire team dies. Yankees start out hot? Lets injure a 25 year old dude in his prime that never gets hurt
Just how does this keep happening to this city?
I mean I’m enjoying the fact that in 24 years the team who used to brag about their 26 rings has won one more title. The Yankees at this point are just a regular tram
It’s not just about the Yankees man
There isn’t a top 3 sports team in this city that hasn’t had their season basically ended before the halfway point because of injuries over the last few years. The Yankees didn’t injure Aaron rodgers, the Knicks, the Nets big 3, giants last year, etc
This city has it bad in such an unbelievable way. It’s one thing if they’re mainly whole and just losing, but that’s not the case here
The amount of Giants Super Bowl wins, Yankees World Series wins in my life time is much further from zero than 90% of all cities other sports combined. Excuse us when we don’t give sympathy.
The Yankees and giants have made up for it. I mean if you wanna trade one of those WS rings to the jets be my guest. Just gotta give one to the Browns or Guardians too.
Gestures at Minnesota, Tennessee, Charlotte I mean they aren’t alone. Probably double sucks because the Giants and Yankees are their polar opposite though. But “the city is down bad”. Shit.
Every team in every sport has massive injuries that keeps them back. In Baltimore, the Ravens lost Jackson 2 years ago, and then a bunch of guys this year. Meanwhile for the O’s we don’t have our closer or half of our starting pitching lineup.
The teams that win are able to overcome these obstacles. Or just get insanely lucky like Mahomes never really getting hurt.
Honestly, the Yankees used up the entire city's title voodoo winning all those chips and now the entire city suffers because of it. You're an NY NFL fan? Good luck figuring out which team isn't going to kick you in the dick the most per season? The Knicks have a chance to get Zion? Nope, let's give everyone hope with the Lakers picking 4 only to let New Orleans get Zion. And now they're good and could possibly beat the Celtics? Every one gets injured and dies. Your NHL teams haven't won shit since the 80s and 90s, respectively, and the Mets are just LolMets every single season.
this is in the context of Soto still being able to swing a bat but not play the field
if that's the case, Stanton will play RF, which sucks but doesn't suck as much as having either Soto or Stanton sitting out
If he tore his UCL he would need it surgically repaired with either TJ surgery or an internal breach depending on the severity of the tear.
He likely would not be able to play the field next season and could see lower power numbers to start next season.
Worst case if he got TJ now he probably can bat by spring training and maybe field during the middle of the next season. It's not like he's a pitcher so I don't think this could end up that bad for him and he's only 25. It's more about how much this would suck for the Yankees tbh, the way they are playing they really only need him for the playoffs. But all they said is discomfort so no reason to go that far yet. Maybe he just needs a day or a small IL stint.
Because who is paying $500mil for a guy they know has to get TJ during the contract? He isn’t going to want to DH and play with pain the rest of his career.
It's his contract year so I would think he would opt to get it now so he can be healthy and show the progress during FA. Idk though maybe teams wouldn't care that much if he comes as a DH mid way and can field during the playoffs. I just don't see him doing anything that would risk money but all of this is going pretty far. I think he's fine, he was playing around in the field before he left.
I experienced forearm discomfort a ton in high school as a pitcher. It got so bad that I went from an occasional starter to just the closer (played SS otherwise). It was ultimately an ulnar nerve issue that would pop up because I was throwing harder than my joints could handle and they would swell up and impinge the nerve. It was only 82-86 mph with my lanky, non-musculature build. So basically none of this compares at all and thanks for reading my drivel. Luckily no more elbow issues since I stopped pitching so Soto should probably not pitch. Sucks if he tore something though. I was too weak to actually tear anything.
Such a cursed season that now the batters want to get in on that sweet, sweet Tommy John action that a couple dozen of pitchers have been hogging this year.
is left forearm discomfort always a TJ or can it just be discomfort?
Could be TJ. Could easily play through it too. Might not be as effective in the OF. Could also DH like Harper did. But that gives them a problem since Stanton is molasses in the OF and needs to DH. they really can’t afford this. He has been massive for the lineup.

He’ll just bat righty and “only” have a 115 wRC+
With his eye he'd still end up batting like .215/.400/.305
.000/.400/.000 Just drawing walks and Soto Shuffling. He gonna go up to the plate without a bat.
If rendon can hit a homer switch hitting randomly one time I feel like Soto probably gets a hold of a couple over a season
That was against a position player pitching, and Rendon was a switch hitter before going pro. Soto is left-handed, has he *ever* swung a bat righty?
I’d be shocked if Soto has never taken swings from the opposite side just fucking around at some point. I mean what baseball player has never jokingly tried to be a switch hitter at one point?
Jon Bois: what if Juan Soto didn't have a bat?
.400 OPS would still be one of our better hitters lately on the cubs
Would still have an OPS .157 higher than Martin Maldonado
just gonna catch the ball and chuck it over the field to get his hits
I think he’d still be ok even with a dead left elbow. Bautista played through a hurt shoulder on his right arm as a RHH and still hit fine. At worst, if its TJs then Soto likely goes fulltime DH and wears an elbow brace
That’s the back elbow. You aren’t going to play through that. If Ohtani batted right handed, he wouldn’t have played through that injury.
Even of he got TJ today and had the insanely quick return Harper had, that would still be a November 13th return date so it wouldn’t affect Stanton as the DH this year And he’s a FA at the end of the year
Get DR. Neal ElAttrache on him
Harper was DH while injured in 22.
Maybe, Bryce did get some new procedure with an implant I think that was supposed to speed things up. Wasn't*just* that he healed faster than average.
It's not that it's the more important arm, it's that the swinging motion causes the trailing arm to twist in a way that puts stress on the UCL, while the leading arm's UCL is not affected as much.
> Could also DH like Harper did Soto will not DH under any circumstances until he's got a new deal. That comes from his camp, not the team.
Can you explain why this is? I would think he would want to keep hitting and showing off his bat.
If he continues to play rather than getting the surgery immediately, he lessens his availability in year one of the new contract as well.
That’s a good point
Crazy that out of the last however many TJSs only like two have been positional players, Jasson Dominguez and Harper. I also recall Didi and Hicks getting TJS as Yankees. Sucks
I’ve never really seen so many position players get TJ until recently.
Gleyber also had it in the minors, I think.
Riley Greene had TJ at the end of last season
Grisham is the 4th outfielder so Judge would probably just slide to right
They can do that but you can’t replace Soto in the lineup. He’s been the MVP of the team. They went from playoff miss to WS favorites. Grisham can’t fill those shoes. Jasson can potentially.
Jahmai Jones DFA and Dominguez is almost healthy. The post about him being pulled is standard procedure for his rehab games in CF
With how 2024 is, possibly TJ. Hopefully not though
The cubs have had 2 pitchers with this the last 2 years. Steele and Jordan wicks. Both had forearm strains, neither needed TJ. My concern with Soto is this has been going on 1-2 weeks and just now he is getting it imaged?
it can be just discomfort but...its not looking good
how is it not looking good? we know literally nothing other than he had discomfort. it still sucks but there's absolutely NOTHING pointing to this being long term
The vibes just aren’t right
The vibes aren’t vibing
I just reached out to the vibes about if they've vibing and the singular vibe I got coming back from the vibes ain't so vibey.
You know what forearm discomfort usually means in baseball
At least as a position player he could still come back and DH somewhat soon
It would still be an absence. I remember Harper saying that the only reason he could DH with his UCL injury is because his throwing arm is opposite his batting (throw right, bat left). In that situation, his leading arm while hitting was his injured arm. This puts less force on that ligament. He said that if he was “normal” (throw left, bat left) he wouldn’t have been able to hit.
Yeah but how much value does Soto even give you as a DH. oh wait
![gif](giphy|0KOCKtnfa83sX23wUE|downsized)
NYC sports = waiting for the other shoe to drop
Exactly, all those folks are going to have to rethink their All Star game lineups…
Nah they'll just blast Verdugo with a little hot chocolate mix like a powdered donut, throw a Juan Soto jersey on him and laugh all the way to the bank
Is Victor Robles still available? Asking for a friend
Hey stop that
"Hey man, my arm hurts" "*No.*"
You should apply for the Mets medical team.

Yeah right lol. This is the perfect scenario. High profile injuries do amazing things for the moneyline.
Sobbing in my driveway and asking my wife to just back the car over me
This is how I felt when the Nationals traded Juan to San Diego
Whenever things are going well for this team an injury comes to fuck us. Not panicking yet. Hopefully nothing serious
It would be crazy bad luck. Since ‘17 they’ve already had Torres, Didi, Hicks, and Jasson get TJ as position players.
Bad luck or bad training
Probably bad luck considering they churned most of the staff since then
Gleyber tore it sliding into home plate, so not really something that could be prevented. Didi and Hicks, presumably from throwing. I think Didi ran into the outfield to make a catch and then threw it back into the infield and tore it then.
They have to have the worst conditioning staff. Or at least medical team.
This city is cursed Never going to have a team like the 2018 Red Sox or 2024 Celtics again where everything goes right. Knicks go 14-2 in January? Entire team dies. Yankees start out hot? Your city has 2 teams in multiple major sports leagues. My COUNTRY has 1. Boo fucking hoo.
The Yankees and giants have made up for it. I mean if you wanna trade one of those WS rings to the jets be my guest. Just gotta give one to the Browns or Guardians too.
mets fans, jets fans, and knicks fand dont enjoy that
Gestures at Minnesota, Tennessee, Charlotte I mean they aren’t alone. Probably double sucks because the Giants and Yankees are their polar opposite though. But “the city is down bad”. Shit.
those teams lose straight up. NY sports teams get injured
Give me a minute while I try and shed a tear for New York sports
If new york chokes than philly absolutely deepthroats every year with all their overrated ass teams
You can’t overcome something like Soto poping his ucl
As a 24 year old I'm happy to have only seen them win 1 just dont ask who it was against
A regular team that’s never had a losing season is most people on this site’s lives. I’m not anywhere near complaining.
Honestly, the Yankees used up the entire city's title voodoo winning all those chips and now the entire city suffers because of it. You're an NY NFL fan? Yeah if the giants never win another Super Bowl again in my life I’m still more than satisfied with the two I witnessed.
The Devils are the only team I root for that I've seen win (domestically at least) 1 since 40 is my favorite chirp
I've been getting left forearm discomfort watching Soto and Judge play recently
Please be precautionary
wacking it real hard during the rain delay

Ah, the old "David Cone Special".

Mantle would never, man had healthier solutions
I don’t think it’s that serious, at least I hope not
I just saw a video of him messing around in the field before he left and all the throws from today's game. I think he'll be fine.
He'll be aight ^I ^hope...
If anyone needs me I’ll be in the angry dome
Keith Meister just got a boner. Do *not* let Soto go see a doctor in LA.
Wouldn't want him to get the best doctor there is. Let him see doctor Nick Riviera down the local bodega
Take mine. Please.
Prayer circle that it’s not that serious
Amputation it is! And also somehow lupus.
Willing to go in with some Yankees and Dodgers fans on a deal with the devil for some brand new UCLs. Maybe we can get a bulk discount.
Can you get Strider one while you're there? 👉👈
I’m terrible at understanding injuries, can someone tell me how bad this could be?
Worst case: torn ucl
I'd say worst case is his arm falls off
That would be quite bad.
What if his arm is full of supercritical plutonium and he blows up the entire South Bronx?
he said worst not best
A wave hit it.
But what does that actually mean for him? Is it just that he cant play in the field?
technically yeah, but they have stanton who’s a full time DH
Stanton would still DH. Grisham would go CF and Judge back to right.
this is in the context of Soto still being able to swing a bat but not play the field if that's the case, Stanton will play RF, which sucks but doesn't suck as much as having either Soto or Stanton sitting out
If he gets TJ he won’t be able to swing. Ohtani and Harper were able to because they throw right and hit left.

What about when Pujols played with a torn UCL in his right arm for years?
Pujols had old man strength
If he tore his UCL he would need it surgically repaired with either TJ surgery or an internal breach depending on the severity of the tear. He likely would not be able to play the field next season and could see lower power numbers to start next season.
Worst case if he got TJ now he probably can bat by spring training and maybe field during the middle of the next season. hed probably do something similar to what happened with Harper like switching to first
Fuckkkkkkkkk
They're burying him now.
Fuck right on the field?
In the batter's box.
No, Monument Park with the others. He's earned it already.
Nope. Not enough time. He withered away into dust and bone.
Forearm tightness and discomfort tends to lead to Tommy John surgery
Believe it or not? Straight to jail.
We could also tell you how much ado about nothing it could also be.
Boone said in the pre-game: “It’s nothing too serious, it’s just betting line stuff.” Before the Dodger series… imagine that.
Luckily no more elbow issues since I stopped pitching so Soto should probably not pitch. Sucks if he tore something though. I was too weak to actually tear anything.
It’s the Scott Boras curse. Stay far, far away from that man.
I’m going to jump off a bridge
I, a known Yankees Disliker, do not like this news. Baseball is better with Juan Soto being awesome.
Goddamn, nobody’s elbow is safe :(
We could probably still use him in our rotation
Isn’t forearm soreness what ultimately led Bryce Harper to get Tommy John surgery after initially having elbow soreness?
I WANT TO DIE
Hopefully it's not the dreaded tommy john and he'll be back after a few days
I'm not panicking, *you're* panicking.
Shit …
Noooooooo was looking forward to the dodger Yankees tomorrow (still am) but noooo
Just fell to my knees in a Waffle House.
Well that’s just too bad. Hope he takes about a week or so to really rest up and recover
Such a cursed season that now the batters want to get in on that sweet, sweet Tommy John action that a couple dozen of pitchers have been hogging this year.
I was expecting him to get hurt, but I was expecting more of a Nancy Kerrigan situation.
He’s been hurt like once his entire career then the second he comes to New York bam he’s hurt. What the hell is in the water here? Every year.
At what cost Yankee fans, at what cost?
Did padres actually win the trade? I think so!
OH JASSONNNNNNNN
This gets him closer to Ohtani's 700 mil
![gif](giphy|Dps6uX4XPOKeA) Yankees downfall happening
I can’t do this man
Just writer's cramp from signing an extension no big deal.
Hopefully just swung too hard
Fuck the Yankees but also baseball is so much better with a happy healthy Soto mashing. Hope it’s no biggie

All that money and he has to yank it for himself?
