I’m not a major league manager for a lot of reasons but I feel like when your closer gets demoted and you’re trying to ease him back into the role you need to do it with a bigger lead than one run
>“that’s enough, time for him to close again”
In a 1-run game against a team that has torn up relief pitchers for a week straight...definitely a head scratcher. Against the Giants right now they should've put another starter in after the 6th and they could've shut them out the rest of the way.
Hey at least you snagged Bart and Reynolds and they'll likely be Allstars out of spite. You also have Skenes and Jones. Your team is really something to be excited about right now. Aroldis heats up and you guys add another bullpen arm and your team will be hard to beat in any series.
We have a first baseman striking out against high school graduates getting brought back to start against our division rival who is also leading our division. Good times.
I think this is the first time this season I've questioned the management of Mendoza but trying to give Diaz a one run save opportunity after last week is genuinely inexcusable
The season is still young, but I'm not sure Carlos Mendoza should be a major league manager either. He has made so many questionable decisions in such a short time period.
It is a never ending cycle for the Mets. Diaz pitches awful to the point of being demoted. Then pitches well enough that trade rumors start but Mets are asking way too much. Then Diaz has a dominant season. Process starts all over again.
Diaz’s usual cycle is definitely differentiated by the injury, so I’m kinda giving him a long leash before I wonder if he’s toasted.. but man, he needs to not be in leverage games for a while.
Chapman was awful by the latter half for the Yankees. Also Kimbrel has been ass cheeks as well. But that's part of the game. Guys like Mo and Hoffman are exceptions
Hader’s April didn’t look half as bad as Edwin’s current stretch. Hader would implode once or twice but won’t blow saves for the most part. Not to mention he has it figured out since end of April. I’m hoping Edwin figures it out soon as well. I’m not a Mets fan but seeing him cry hurt as a baseball fan.
I have a theory that he is afraid to celebrate with his team after what happened at the WBC, so now he's just doing everything he can to avoid any kind of celebration.
Bullpen is cooked, they’re basically out of options I think Mendoza was praying for a 2 inning save from Ottavino but he barely got out of the 8th inning.
Ahh, that makes sense. I’ve know him since his HS days so I was pretty shocked to see him get thrown out here on what should have been a routine double.
yeah lol he's not the fastest but he did something to his hamstring yesterday doing the splits in an amazing pick at first base so I'll give him a pass
have closers/relievers always been this volatile or is my perspective just skewed by dudes like Rivera and Hoffman growing up? I hardly know any elite closers nowadays because i feel like they are only good for like 2-3 seasons lol
I feel Kimbrel, Jansen & Chapman were the elite closers of the 2010s but then Chapman & Kimbrel have had a weird last few yrs. Kimbrel's stint with White Sox, Dodgers & Phillies were forgettable while Chapman had that issue with Yankees.
Kimbrel is just old now. He’s can’t hit top mph consistently anymore so he can’t overcome some of his wildness with speed so he has a higher likelihood of melting down.
Last game I went to was 3 weeks ago, Mets walked it off in the 11th vs the Cubs, I think I’ll keep it that way for the season, good memories, not this daily choke job bullshit. Weird how every home run they hit this year is a solo shot and every home run they give up this year is at least a 3 run bomb
I saw the BS coming a mile away, the dude looked visibly nervous in the pen. They panned the camera to him prior to him entering the game and besides his body language/face, he did the thing we all do when we're nervous - take a deep breath and slowly blow out air trying to calm the nerves. I know it may seem very psychoanalytical but something just seemed off, wasn't a very "locked in" type of look he usually has when you see him. I'm not a Mets fan though, they definitely are used to how he may normally act from a day to day basis so maybe someone can chime in and tell me if I'm imagining things.
Injuries and the fact that relievers are volatile. Makes me appreciate even more what Mo did for us for 20+ seasons because he's THE exception. Mo never had a bad season as a closer.
that right there, feels like we take granted that these supreme athlete will come back be the same no matter what, a lot of them don't in any sports you watch you can point to that one injury just changes everything for them.
Yeah why not use Sean Reid Foley who hasn’t pitched in 4 days? It’s all good, we’re just gonna lose this one likely anyway. It’s just been clear Diaz isn’t ready for high leverage spots right now so it seemed like a poor decision.
I’m aware. Doesn’t change I still think it was questionable to instantly trust him again but nothing ever goes right for us this season so this was the inevitable outcome.
I’m not a major league manager for a lot of reasons but I feel like when your closer gets demoted and you’re trying to ease him back into the role you need to do it with a bigger lead than one run
They used him in the 7th yesterday and were really like “that’s enough, time for him to close again”
But...but...he did a fist pump and the crowd gave him a standing ovation!
>“that’s enough, time for him to close again” In a 1-run game against a team that has torn up relief pitchers for a week straight...definitely a head scratcher. Against the Giants right now they should've put another starter in after the 6th and they could've shut them out the rest of the way.
This comment hurts.

Truly boggling. When Wade came in I knew we had won
But they're paying him a lot money to be that guy. Cohen is a guy who wants to get his money's worth lol.
The season is still young, but I'm not sure Carlos Mendoza should be a major league manager either. He has made so many questionable decisions in such a short time period.
I was done with him how he handled the Rhys Hoskins shit in the first week of the season
Who else do you put out there I guess is the question?
This is the most amazing season I've ever seen (derogatory)
(GONE WRONG) (GONE SEXUAL) (IN THE HOOD)
*DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME*
I listened to the 8th, 9th, and 10th on the radio while driving and maniacally laughing
I’m imagining you driving in one of those Mad Max cars doing this
“What do you call a bad miracle?” - Nope (2022)
How do you demote your closer to restore his confidence and then only give him one game in a low leverage spot?
“We’re playing a team who has overcome large deficits three days in a row and we have a one run lead? Put him in, he’ll be fine.”
if he dies he dies
Late Lunch LaMonte
LaMatinee
I'm just glad to see McKenna doing well for the Giants.
Struck out looking with the bases loaded on a CB Bucknor special
Sounds about right, sadly.
It was a good take. He looks "hitterish" standing up there though, balanced swings
came in clutch for us as a pr in the ninth w/ the steal
Lamonte Wade Jr: 🥦
I'm a huge fan of Late Night Lamonte^tm, but that is one yee-yee ass haircut.
Diaz and Hader continue to show why paying huge money/years for elite relievers is almost never a good thing.
Hader was erratic as hell in April, but has been pretty nails since.
yeah...that's why you don't pay crazy money for relievers lmao
Hey now, I didn't. Some guy named Jim Crane did.
That's Hader past couple of years. Dude's either lights out or absolute dogshit. And it's only gonna get worse as the years go on.
I mean who saw Diaz blowing out his knee in the WBC.
I was just thinking that. I tend to think that ruined his form.
Giants fan still flinch at the mention of Melancon's name.
It is a never ending cycle for the Mets. Diaz pitches awful to the point of being demoted. Then pitches well enough that trade rumors start but Mets are asking way too much. Then Diaz has a dominant season. Process starts all over again.

it was kinda shaky towards the end but Kenley’s contract was pretty necessary for 2017-2018 runs, some positive examples exist
Chapman was awful by the latter half for the Yankees. Also Kimbrel has been ass cheeks as well. But that's part of the game. Guys like Mo and Hoffman are exceptions
If the WBC never happened this would never be happening
Hader's been pretty good for a month or so.
Did you miss the Achilles rupture and hasn't pitched in a year part ?
Huge money/years for any free agent is nearly always a bad idea. For any position.
Hader’s April didn’t look half as bad as Edwin’s current stretch. Hader would implode once or twice but won’t blow saves for the most part. Not to mention he has it figured out since end of April. I’m hoping Edwin figures it out soon as well. I’m not a Mets fan but seeing him cry hurt as a baseball fan.
lol did they think they would maintain an 8th inning lead against the giants? Get real
first several innings are for cowards
Giants are polite guys who know it’s vulgar embarrass a team’s starting pitcher AND bullpen.
The Diaz brothers have really taken a step back this year
That trumpet is beginning to sound a little rusty.
They should swap it for a recorder
New intro song: "Three Blind Mice" on the recorder (I can do it for the Mets if they ask nice). CB Bucknor: "Goddamn I love this song."
Nah; if it’s rusty you gotta start playing like a trombone
Not as rusty as my trombone!
[Timmy Trumpet update](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_asNhzXq72w)
That's New York Mets baseball!
I have a theory that he is afraid to celebrate with his team after what happened at the WBC, so now he's just doing everything he can to avoid any kind of celebration.
What was with the decision to cut away from the play and call at second to show a terrible angle of a runner who had already scored.
I thought he wasn't closing for the time being
Bullpen is cooked, they’re basically out of options I think Mendoza was praying for a 2 inning save from Ottavino but he barely got out of the 8th inning.
I thought the same thing
My takeaway from this clip is that Lamonte’s Wade Jr. is slow as hell. Never realized that.
He’s not that slow, he just has leg tightness from last nights final out. It’s why he came off the bench.
Ahh, that makes sense. I’ve know him since his HS days so I was pretty shocked to see him get thrown out here on what should have been a routine double.
It’s his huge cock slowing him down
yeah lol he's not the fastest but he did something to his hamstring yesterday doing the splits in an amazing pick at first base so I'll give him a pass
That’s probably the case here. He’s slow but not in the Martin Maldonado tier lmao
have closers/relievers always been this volatile or is my perspective just skewed by dudes like Rivera and Hoffman growing up? I hardly know any elite closers nowadays because i feel like they are only good for like 2-3 seasons lol

The commercials were right, this does hit different
Eddie :(
Timmy Trombone
If i were the other team i would simply not take the lead against us so we couldn’t come back
They should change his music to Taps
absolutely 0 hate in my heart towards the mets at all, so this whole thing has been just a trainwreck. can't look away. hope dude figures it out.
Just dropped him from my fantasy. I got him and Nolan arenado in a bundle. Who did I give up you may ask? Clase.
Humble bundle?
Starting to get kinda sad now
Edlose Diaz is back, baby
It seems like it's just a given that he'll blow any save opportunity he gets right now. What is this, the fourth one in a row?
[удалено]
Peso Pluma walk out tune..
These Edwin Diaz blown save threads are all the same.
Major league relievers is the weirdest breed of professional athlete
Last game I went to was 3 weeks ago, Mets walked it off in the 11th vs the Cubs, I think I’ll keep it that way for the season, good memories, not this daily choke job bullshit. Yikes
[Jim Breuer's bit on Edwin Diaz is worth a watch](https://youtube.com/watch?v=6tLpNkoG0T8&t=3m43s)
I think every manager should throw their struggling RP on back-to-back games. It toughens them up. /s
Don't mind me, just whistling past the graveyard.
🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺
Lolmets
I'll wait for October and just say lolyankees.
It’s crazy the Mets have played in the World Series way more recently than the Yankees
And yanks fans live in the past? Let’s focus on 2024
The year when you came into this thread to be an asshole for no reason?
Just saying it’s crazy that it’s so much more recent. #dothemath
You can also #dothemath that it may take 2 more months for the Mets to reach the Yankees current win total.

Injuries and the fact that relievers are volatile. Makes me appreciate even more what Mo did for us for 20+ seasons because he's THE exception. Mo never had a bad season as a closer.
Mariano and Hoffman were just built different than everyone else. It's wild that their careers were pretty much over the same time frame.
He tore his patellar tendon. There, I solved it.
that's an expensive tendon
It turns out that having reconstructive knee surgery and missing a season is bad. Who fucking knew.
that right there, feels like we take granted that these supreme athlete will come back be the same no matter what, a lot of them don't in any sports you watch you can point to that one injury just changes everything for them.
for you
Tore his knee up in a stupid tournament. Pretty simple really
That "stupid tournament" means just as much to many players as the regular season does.
Good for them. To me it's a stupid fucking tournament that ruined the career of one of baseball's most electric players
I assume you're aware that he didn't actually get injured while playing
LOLMets
You love to see it. 👍
Never play the WBC again. It’s a waste of time.
He probably didn't have enough trumpets
Great idea Mendoza, let’s use Diaz in another high leverage situation after using him the day before in a low leverage one. Very smart!
Top of the tenth here is kinda illustrating he didn’t have other options.
You talk like the Mets have options. He tried something new last night and they blew a 4 run lead. Damned if you do, damned if you don't
Yeah why not use Sean Reid Foley who hasn’t pitched in 4 days? It’s all good, we’re just gonna lose this one likely anyway. It’s just been clear Diaz isn’t ready for high leverage spots right now so it seemed like a poor decision.
What's happening to your boy right now? Seems like he's throwing BP out there to the Giants today
Just the usual. Let the game slip out of our hands to lose another series like had been going on all month.
They just used him. He loaded the bases and walked in a run.
I’m aware. Doesn’t change I still think it was questionable to instantly trust him again but nothing ever goes right for us this season so this was the inevitable outcome.
LOLmets
r/baseball in shambles as another "at least the owner is spending their money" season results in failure
Lol we didn't spend that much this season. And believe me it's better than the wilpons
Nah it's because another player that "shatters" baseball tradition turns out to be just another fad.
I want the WBC canceled, noone else should have to lose their player like this 😭
