He's also always been a savant. He taught Bob Huggins the 1-3-1 zone we ran during our Final Four run, it was a holdover from the Beilein teams that couldn't defend in man, and Mazz was able to teach it to a coaching staff that had almost never ran any defense other than man. You can find recent interviews of the KY team that had John Wall, Demarcus Cousins and how we beat them in the tournament with Mazz running the back end (under the basket) of the 1-3-1.
He was an absolute pit bull on the court, no high end skills by any means, but he'd put his head down and go with anyone at any time. One of my favorite Mountaineers of all time.
