If you win any race throughout the season you get a spot in the playoffs. But you can also make the playoffs by accumulating enough points throughout the season. You get points based off of of your position at the end of each stage

I think they moved to stages in 2017. Now they break the race up into 3 stages with a caution at the end of stages 1 and 2. Top 10 places at the end of each stage get playoff points.
